4 Southern Peninsula Division Lawn Bowls Competition 2017 Hastings Bowling Club were hosts to the Southern Peninsula Division SSV Lawn Bowls competition on Wednesday October 11 th. This competition was introduced mainly due to the influence of local man George Bartley, the Hastings Lawn Bowls Club and the Southern Peninsula Division Sports Association and is now in its eleventh year. The draw comprised of teams from Western Port (two teams), Rosebud (two teams) and Mornington (two teams). The day was played in the true competitive spirit of the game with all teams fighting for shot. The day followed a round robin format. The competition was a 2 bowl triples playing seven ends or 45 minutes. Western Port 2 came second winning all games except to Rosebud who were the eventual winners. Well done to team members Harrison Jansz, Josh Hastie and Blake Wilson. They will represent the division next year in the Southern Metropolitan Region finals. Western Port 1 finished fourth. They improved during the day with each end played. Team members were Harry Hansen, Kade Watson and Jordan Watson. The 2017 Pierre De Coubertin Awards The Pierre de Coubertin Awards, an initiative of the Victorian Olympic Council and the Department of Education and Training, turned 20 this year and WPSC was one of the 15 schools who have participated each year since its inception in There are now over 200 school representatives receiving this award-an indication of the significance and esteem in which this award is held. Named after the founder of the Modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the awards aim to recognise students who demonstrate attributes consistent with the fundamental aims of the Olympic movement. These attributes include participation in sporting endeavours with a particular emphasis on competing and commendable sporting behavior. This year the award was presented to Vicki Hogan-Keogh a Year 12 student. The award ceremony was held on Sunday June 23 rd at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) and provided the opportunity to connect one on one with Olympians: Linley Frame Swimming, Ellia Green Gold medalist Rugby, Belinda Hocking Swimming, Jeff Riseley Athletics, Pam Ryan Silver and Bronze medalist Athletics and Trevor Vincent Athletics. The day also included a tour of the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) which Matt Foy also attended. Western Port Secondary College also received a certificate recognising our support. Pierre s inspiring message reminds us that: The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part. Just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. Thanks Kevin! Western Port Secondary College would like to thank Mr Kevin Toohey and the boys from KK Steel for their continued support to the College. Kevin recently came to the College to help staff member, Ms Christina Moss to set up the welding bays in our new Trade Training Centre. The school is now offering new courses for both year 9 and 10 students in basic engineering, welding and fabrication. This to provide students with more hands on experience in an industry, which is best, suited to the area and therefore increasing employment opportunities for its students. Kevin has been keen to support the new courses because he understands and sees the value of these skills in an industry that continues to thrive against automation and robotic intervention. Just giving students the opportunity to learn these skills so that they can use them in later life or help them get into TAFE or onto an apprenticeship is invaluable.
5 RU OK DAY CELEBRATIONS!
6 Year 11 Careers Expo Excursion Casey Fields HPV 6 hour sprint RED FROG Digger from Red Frog popped in to speak with our Year 12's about schoolies and safe party practices, giving the students valuable information on how to take care of themselves and their friends during hectic times such as schoolies. Mitchell Cook Students across the College had the opportunity to learn some skills from Collingwood's Mitchell Cook. Mitchell spent two days in the gym running training sessions and giving out prizes.

8 MAT PROGRAM You are stronger than you think. Small steps matter. Learning never ends. Accept challenges. VCAL students completed their Martial Arts Training (MAT program) component yesterday with the well known technique - breaking boards. The program has taught the students some invaluable life lessons. Well done and congratulations. Southern Peninsula Division Athletics On Thursday September 14 th 50 WPSC students travelled to Ballam Park to compete in the annual Southern Peninsula Division Athletics Championships. The students that attended were outstanding and their commitment of all those involved was a credit to themselves and the school. After 5 gold medals, 10 seconds and 21 thirds, 3 students will compete in 5 events at the Southern Metropolitan Region Finals at Casey. Congratulations to all the students of the athletics team for achieving fifth in the overall aggregate. Every position in an event contributes points to the team aggregate. Therefore every student who competed were vital to the teams final result. Considering our school numbers compared to the other top schools we have achieved a very good standard. Thank you to the helpers, parents and teachers and most importantly to the students for their dedication and enthusiasm. Hopefully these successful performances will continue for many more years as long as the students are prepared to participate and strive for excellence.
