1 St Arnaud Secondary College Weekly Newsletter Principal s Report Issue 31 October 16th, 2015 Public trust is built when it is clear that our schooling system makes decisions based on evidence and research and when it is seen as a good steward of public resources. I would like to think that this is the case here at St Arnaud Secondary College. The latest parent opinion survey results have just been released and they show improvement in all areas. Are we there yet? Absolutely not, we will digest this set of data and the plethora of other information and continue to strive hard to improve even further. Thank you to all families who have supported us with our Sun Smart policy by ensuring their children have broad brimmed hats. I would like to further seek your help by asking you to have conversations with your children about safe travel to and from school. Over the past few days several local residents have commented on the unsafe practices of our students when crossing roads. I will take the issue up with our school council and local authorities to see what we can do to ensure the safety of our students, in the meantime please remind your children to be sensible and safe when crossing roads. 2 Page 2 **** Year 7 News **** St Arnaud Secondary College I would like to convey the positive manner in which the Year 7 students have started their Term 4 learning. Reports from a range of staff have been very encouraging and we hope that this continues right throughout the term in all areas and into their Step Up studies as well. It was good to see a few of our students wear some interesting hats to school last Friday for our Crazy Hat Day. Now that we are in the hotter months of the year all students must wear a broad brimmed hat at school everyday. They have been very good at following this important SunSmart rule thus far. Students are also encouraged to have a drinker filled with water for their classes particularly PE. This week in classes Maths students have been continuing their studies of angles and have been moving around the school observing objects in the school environment that create a range of angles. PE students are undertaking a short unit on Minor Games with the focus being on teambuilding, hand-eye coordination, agility and general fitness. Students generally love these short team games and are always very encouraging of one another. Ceramics I really enjoyed witnessing the wonderful ceramic tiles, frogs and mugs that students created last term. These are currently being fired and glazed and will make their way home to you in the coming weeks. Humanities students have been focusing on the requirements of water for our survival. They have also completed activities centred around the Queensland floods and the impact on the environment. English the classes are studying the novel Pankration which is a fictional novel based around Ancient Greece and the original Olympic games. They should be completing additional reading of the text at home to enhance their understanding in preparation for their text responses around this novel. Homework Reminders Maths Week 1 Term 4 Maths Mate English English Basics Unit 12 PE practical classes all term so clothing and runners required every Wed and Thurs Literacy back into reading 20 mins each night Roxanne Egan (Yr 7 Coord) on or egan.roxanne.j@edumail.vic.gov.au
3 Issue 31 Page 3 ST.ARNAUD SECONDARY COLLEGE REGION ATHLETICS On the 6 th of October 2015, 28 students from St Arnaud Secondary College competed at the Loddon Mallee Region Athletics competition in Bendigo. Of the 28 students who competed, three made it through to the state finals to be held in Melbourne on Tuesday 20 th of October. The students who won events and will be progressing are: Torri Tillig (20 years Girls Shot Put), Jack Tillig (13 years boys Hurdles) and Cody Aspland (20 years Boys 1500m). The college also had four students win silver medals and eight placed third. Many students who didn t achieve a place competed extremely well and gained valuable points for the college. A number of these students actually achieved personal bests and this is a tremendous feat. 4 Page 4 St Arnaud Secondary College NCD LAWN BOWLS On Monday 12 th October, St.Arnaud Secondary College was represented at the interschool lawn bowls by three teams of triples. The event was held in Boort. Five schools participated in the competition. The three St.Arnaud teams were St.Arnaud 1: Mitchell Egan, Eric Kovac & Tom Amos (skipper), St.Arnaud 2: Jack Tillig, Billy Egan & David Kovac (skipper) and St.Arnaud 3: Fletcher Douglas, Leetyn McKenzie & Luke Jackson (skipper). St.Arnaud began with the bye. In round 2 St.Arnaud played Wedderburn and all teams won. Round 3 saw St.Arnaud play Pyramid Hill. St.Arnaud 1 had a victory but the other two St.Arnaud teams were defeated on the final end. After lunch St.Arnaud played Boort. St.Arnaud 1 had their first loss whilst the other two teams both won. Pyramid Hill had a bye in the last round. St.Arnaud needed to win all their matches to tie Pyramid Hill with 9 wins for the day. They achieved this, however when shots for and shots against were calculated St.Arnaud lost by the barest of margins. A great effort by all the boys. Congratulations to the three teams and thanks to the St.Arnaud Bowling Club for the use of their facilities and to Maurie Wood and Ian Batters for their assistance during team practice. Final scores were: Pyramid Hill 18 (85 for, 49 against for 1.73) St.Arnaud 18 (84 for, 57 against for 1.47) a narrow loss by 0.26!
