Page 2 St Arnaud Secondary College **** Year 7 News **** Welcome to Week 4! This is the final week before Interim Reports are completed and a timely reminder that students need to be working to their full potential, in all subjects, and ensuring that they are demonstrating a very strong work ethic. Our Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in a few weeks, Monday the 24 th of August, after these reports have been sent home. This is always a fantastic opportunity to communicate with your child s teachers and work together to support their education. Congratulations to our Year 7 boys who will be participating in the Boys State Hockey team in Melbourne on August the 13 th. Edward Parry, Sebastian Prestwood, Jackson Medlyn and Harry Knights will all take part in this high level competition at the State Hockey Centre. Xavier Haywood will also travel with them to participate in the Boys Junior Squash competition in Melbourne as part of the Year 7/8 team on the same day. We wish all boys well as they represent the school at state level next week. In Food Technology last week students created sumptuous pizza using their personal favourite toppings. These very quickly disappeared and there were no leftovers to share. In Humanities, students created balloon globes to enhance their understanding of the continents and oceans. Their proud efforts are included in the photo attached. We have our first draw of the Power Hour study Rewards Card tomorrow after school, for students who are regular participants in the program. I would like to commend many of the Year 7 students, particularly the boys, who are consistently attending study sessions each week to complete homework tasks. HOMEWORK REMINDERS MATHS - Maths Mate Week 4 Term 3 and weekly homework task (sheet/book questions) ENGLISH English Basics Unit 10 due Tues 18 th August. Red Dog Assignment (students should be working on these at home in addition to general classwork). These are due on Friday 7 th August SCIENCE 7A have their renewable options poster due Monday 10th and 7B on Wednesday 12th. Roxanne Egan (Yr 7 Coord) on or egan.roxanne.j@edumail.vic.gov.au

Issue 23 Page 3 Broader Horizons Last week we had another excellent day at the East Wimmera Health Service (EWHS) where the students were able to witness the duties and tasks that the Health Promotions Officer and the Dietician perform at the hospital. We were even lucky enough to have a quick visit from Kathy Huett, the CEO of EWHS. After an interesting discussion about nutrition, investigating food portions and learning about daily dietary requirements in teenage girls, the group was able to use their newly gained knowledge down at the local supermarket. Although, someone did sneakily purchase a small chocolate bar for an afternoon snack! Megan Russell showed the girls how to read the nutrition labels on food products; and everyone agreed that they don't eat enough of the 'good choice' foods. Then it was time for a quick session with Kathy who had a few inspirational words to say to the group and reinforced the importance of hard work, working towards your dreams and getting the most out of your education. In Health Promotions, Andree Schier showed us the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles. It was fascinating to see the changes in community perception towards smoking through TV advertisements over the last forty years. In the early 1960s it was seen as a healthy activity that doctors encouraged everyone to participate in. Even the Flintstones cartoon promoted smoking as a relaxing pastime. These days, the community understands about the dangers of smoking which reflects in the latest TV ads that are more for shocking and persuading people to stop smoking for their health. We finally finished the day with a few fun and educational card games.

Page 4 St Arnaud Secondary College Buildings & Grounds A welcome sight around the school is Jason Burke and Paul Mullins. Natural wear and tear over the years has meant that there are many jobs that have been taken care of in their capable hands. A major task that is now nearing completion is the painting of the interior of Room 8. It has been transformed from 80 s apricot to in-style white and grey. Another job well done! Profile Tony Camilleri I have two wonderful daughters, one aged seven and one aged one. With my wife we live in California Gully, Bendigo where we moved from Melbourne about six years ago. For the first three weeks of this term I was employed as a casual relief teacher at St. Arnaud Secondary. This has turned into a six month contract teaching English and Humanities. adults and young people. Before teaching at St. Arnaud I was doing casual relief teaching at a few schools, particularly Wedderburn P-12 College. Before teaching I worked for a couple of decades as a social worker in areas like mental health or drug and alcohol counselling with My favourite subject is probably history although I will talk the ear off anyone when discussing movies of almost any era.

Issue 23 Page 5 SEPEP ROUND 2 & 3 REPORT The game that I watched was between Saintly Scoundrels and the Smurfs. The Saintly Scoundrels were leading by one goal at half time. The better players in the first half were Will and Mitch because they showed great team work. Madi Decker also worked hard in defence. Meg and Bree passed the ball around well and Courtney Bell shot a great goal! The score at the end of the game was 39 to 32 with the Smurfs winning the game. Sam played well in the second half as he scored some goals and dribbled the ball well. Cody Decker and Imogen also put a lot of shots at goal up. Courtney, Meg and Bree showed great improvement over the game. The game that I watched was between the Rattlers and the Black Knights. The Black Knights were leading at half time. Lochlan played really well in the first half, as did Ally Wright. They both tried their best, were team players and never dropped their heads. The score at the end of the game was 44 to 20 with the Black Knights winning. Scarlett was full of energy in the second half and Kirby put in a lot of effort for the Black Knights. Tarnii and Maddison showed great improvement over the game. The game that I watched was between the Saintly Scoundrels and the Rednecks. The score at the end of the first half was 13 to 12 with the Saints leading. Mitch played well in the first half and scored a 3-pointer. The score at the end of the game was 20 to 35 with the Saints winning. Fletcher played well in the second half and passed the ball around. Renee shot a great goal in the second half and showed great improvement over the game. The game that I watched was between the Dark Knights and Smurfs. Zoe Long played well in the first half and Charlotte also did, taking an accidental hit from Madi Decker for the team. The score at the end of the game was 34 to 43 with Smurfs winning. Sam shared the ball around well, as did Jesse. Dyllan Rigby put some good shots up. Meg, Maddy and Kirby worked hard all game and never dropped their heads. 7 Issue 23 Page 7 Winter Sports Senior Boys Soccer On Friday the 31 st of August Eric Woollett, Leetyn McKenzie, Jordan Summers, Sam Cook, Pat Knights, Evan Douglas, Shaun Clohesy, Nick Birthisel, Ryan Neilson, Harley Durward, Dan Flanagan, Ned Jackson and their fearless captain Tom Bertalli, accompanied by Mr. Cornwell and Mr. Knight travelled down to the picturesque King George Park to participate in the senior boys soccer round robin. Some may say that the St. Arnaud boys arrived at the ground first because they had less to travel, but I believe it was because of their eagerness to play and stake their claim to win back-to-back titles. The day consisted of a round robin format, where each team played 2 games against other schools. The winning team from each pool was then to play off in the Grand Final. St Arnaud was to take on old rivals Donald in the decider. St Arnaud got the early jump on Donald, with quick goals to Durward and Jackson, but Donald was able to strike back. With 17 seconds left on the clock and the score at 3-2, a St Arnaud defender thought he was playing footy and decided to punch the ball, resulting in a penalty kick to Donald, which they converted and forced a shootout. Durward, Jackson and Summers were able to convert all 3 goals, Donald only managing two and the victory went to St Arnaud. Game 1 St Arnaud (4) Vs Charlton (0) Goal Scorers Jackson 2, Durward 1, Bertalli 1. Game 2 St Arnaud (6) vs Wycheproof (1) Goal Scorers Jackson 2, Clohesy 2, Flanagan 1, Durward 1 Grand Final St Arnaud (3) vs Donald (3) Goal Scorers Jackson 2, Durward 1 St Arnaud wins in Shoot-out

Page 8 St Arnaud Secondary College The AFL 9's Football was held in Donald with three mini ovals within the larger footy field. The very first encounter was St Arnaud 1 (mixed team) versus St Arnaud 2 (all male team). This was a fantastic opportunity to get a good grasp on the rules before opposing rival teams. There were magnificent plays from the St Arnaud 2 who started off strong with many good clearances from the ruck man. Alex Lloyd kicking 4 goals in the first half, Lochlan Flanagan also working hard in the centre along side Charlie Ferguson and Josh Walters-Marsh. Alex swapped teams to even the scores but only kicked 1 goal for St Arnaud 1 mixed team. Rhys Tillig took a spectacular mark followed by a massive fall and the final scores 6 goals 5 points to 1 goal 6 points, St Arnaud 2's way. StA 1 played 7 straight games without a break. There were lots of laughs and fantastic efforts which included attempted screamers from Jake and lots of smiles and good sportsmanship for respective rival teams! Great passages of play when Jake Male took possession half way down the field and passed to Ellen Prestwood who kicked a magnificent goal. Mace Bibby was a fantastic defender for the team. St.Arnaud 1 v Donald 1 Xavier kicked a goal in our opening minutes!! Saint s coming in with a fresh outlook!!! Followed by one point and then a goal by Jake and a magnificent goal by Blayne Wharton! The sun hats were needed by the fourth game against Donald mixed team. StA 1 had their first win with lots of goals from the group. Maggie and Scarlett both took a few good tackles as did Liam McSwain. There were finals at the end of the day and the performance from both St Arnaud teams was exceptional. Beautiful weather and the day ran like clockwork! Karen Medlyn

Issue 23 Page 9 Junior Boys Basketball St Arnaud hosted the junior boys basketball competition for NCD Sports Day on Friday 31 st of July. The boys team consisted of Will Bertalli, Luke Jackson, Dylan Casey, Mitchell Egan, Sam Rice, Jesse Reyne, Bailey Durward and Matthew Arbuckle. The boys were too strong for their competition all day, winning all their games: vs Birchip (79 to 20), vs Boort (51 to 18) and vs Donald (57 to 20). As the boys won all their games quite convincingly and were the overall winners, rather than having a final match, we decided to have a scratch match with the students from all four schools making up four mixed-school teams. Our boys conducted themselves very maturely in the last game and were very helpful and encouraging to the less confident players. Throughout the day the boys played with a positive attitude and should be really proud of themselves. Thanks to Nicole Amos and Ebony Kirkpatrick for umpiring during the day. Senior Boys Badminton at Birchip Winter Sport Day Friday 31 st July, 2015 Leaving a heavy frost behind, Peter Hamilton drove the St Arnaud teams through fog, across the ancient sea bed from the Wimmera to the Mallee. It was all blue sky and sun, a perfect winter day. The senior boys badminton team of Thomas Amos, Bill Egan, Bradyn Medlyn, Toby Pickthall and Brady Tillig, played in freezing indoor conditions. The pair of Toby and Brady won their way to the final against Donald, who was undefeated all day. Donald beat Birchip in the grand final, St Arnaud and Boort in third and fourth places. Thanks to Barb of Birchip, Drew from Boort and Jenny from Donald. Picture: Senior boys badminton players.
