1 Responsibility Acceptance Respect Honesty Cooperation Resilience May 27th, 2016 Issue 16, Week 7, Term 2 NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL Robyn Brooks Walk to School, Breakfast and Farmer s Market Thank you for joining our school community to walk to school on Wednesday morning. It was great to see many mums, dads, grandparents and dogs walking with our students to school before enjoying a lovely breakfast, cooked and served by Penni and her band of staff and parents. Thank you also for the produce sent along to sell at our Farmer s Market. It was a fun morning and a wonderful healthy way to start our day (and we beat the rain!). Head Lice We have had a number of reported cases of head lice recently. Please check your child s hair regularly. Please treat your child s hair if you find any lice which should stop the spread. Thank you. Disco A group of Grade 6 girls are organising a disco next Friday night, 3rd June. It would be great to see as many students as possible getting their groove on! More information can be found later in the newsletter. JSC Fundraisers The JSC is holding the following fundraisers this term; 5 Cent Challenge Guess the Staff Member Pyjama Day More details about these can be found further in the newsletter. 4 NETBALL B NETBALL A FOOTBALL SOCCER Last Friday, some Grade 5/6s went off to Irymple Primary to represent our school. We played soccer at the Irymple Knights Oval. It was tough competition but we held our heads up high and ended up winning, 2 1. Overall it was a fun day and we would like to thank everyone who participated, especially our coach Miss Hepworth. Last Friday, our Boys Football team travelled to Irymple Primary to play them in a game of football. Unfortunately we lost that game We tried really hard but were beaten by a stronger, more experienced team. Some of our best players were Cy Romeo, Harry Bottams and Wil Castleman. Last Friday, 20th May, both Grade 5s and 6s went tot Irymple Primary school to play a practise match for interschool sport. The Netball A team played an excellent game and won 32 to 8. All members put in an outstanding effort, but our overall best players were definitely Bethany Hartwig, Brittany Laskaj and Indi Cashin. The team played with great sportsmanship and our encouragement led us to victory. Last Friday the B Netball went to Irymple Primary to play a practice match. We played against the Irymple boys. The girls put in 100% and played extremely well, but our stars of the day would have to be Lexi Johnstone and Mia Andronescu. In the end we won Overall the team played with great sportsmanship and our great defence helped get the ball back down the court. We would like to thank Mrs Vadlja for coaching and Miss Gray for umpiring. 6 PE Mrs Branson In Physical Education over the past few weeks, the 5/6 classes have been have been working on both their footy and soccer skills in preparation for the 5/6 Interschool Sports. In soccer they have been focussing on the skills of dribbling using both feet and changing direction, as well as kick passing and the long lofted kick. In AFL the students have looked at the basic technique of a drop punt kick, handballing and different types of marks. They have filmed each other s kicks and handballs and then used the videos to examine their own technique and set a personal goal. The 5/6 classes have also completed their second round of fitness testing for the year aiming to make improvements on their term one results. The Grade 4 students have been introduced to the sport of rugby. Over the past couple of weeks they have been learning about how to hold the rugby ball correctly, passing and receiving the ball, playing the ball and kicking a grubber kick. They have applied these skills in a number of minor game situations. The Grade 3 students have also been looking at the skills involved in Australian Rules football. Working on the basic punt kick, handballing and marking. The students have learnt about these skills by watching videos on the AFL community club website identifying the main coaching points and practising the skills whilst giving and receiving peer feedback about their technique. They have also just begun a unit on soccer skills, beginning with the skill of dribbling with control. The Grade 2 students have been focussing on soccer skills as well. They have looked at dribbling with both feet and changing direction and kick passing with increasing accuracy. The students have practised these skills individually, with a partner and in modified game situations. They have also learnt the throwing skill, chest passing, focussing on the speed and accuracy of their passes. All Grade 2 to 6 classes have completed both oral and written reflections on their personal Cross Country Goals, the Cross Country race, their Cross Country training and what they were most proud of. Over the past few weeks the Grade1 students have been working on the Fundamental Motor Skills of throwing, tracking and trapping and striking a non-moving ball. They have been refining the skills of throwing a two-handed chest pass, catching a large ball using two hands and hitting a stationary ball off a tee using a forehand strike. The Prep classes have been exploring the locomotion skill of hopping. Students have looked at different ways to hop and played games that involve hopping, leaping and jumping. They have also begun to look at receiving a ball and explored ways that we can make it easier to trap a large ball. Using techniques such as; how to get their hands ready to receive the ball, taking their hands to meet the ball and slowing the ball down by with their arms and binging the ball to their chest.
