1 Term 3, Week 7 6th September 2018 The highlight of the week has most definitely been in the middle school where the Manuka hub have all been to the museum for an overnight sleep over. While a number of children look very tired they are also very excited about the experiences they had staying away from home in the museum. The Matai hub will be having their turn in a couple of weeks and hearing from the children who have just been will add to the excitement of this. Chris McKinlay Principal Next week is scheduled to be the start of the touch season. Elmgrove have 12 teams formed and ready to start. The Draw for Monday is in this week s newsletter. Don t forget the school disco is tomorrow night Friday 7 th September. The theme is wacky hair and there will be glow items and food for sale at the Disco. I look forward to seeing lots of children there, remember 6pm start. I have had review meetings with teachers and teacher aides over the last two weeks as we begin the process of finalising our teaching teams for next year. Once we have completed the teacher teams we will start the complex process of allocating children into the hubs. This always take time so it is important that we start early. Normally we finalise this early in Term 4 and then we will notify parents and children of their placements for next year later in term 4. I have had a number of families visit in the last couple of weeks as they prepare for their children to start school in If you know anyone who has children due to turn 5 in the first half of next year, please talk to them about whether they have been in touch with the school. It is really valuable to have a detailed list of children expected to start in the next couple of terms as we set our classes. It also enables them to get the most out of the Elmgrovers programme. 2 Kauri Hub As part of our Water Of Life inquiry learning this term, the Kauri Hub this week have chosen to work in groups all doing different things to help save the world. We have chosen to work under the acronym M.A.D - Making A Difference The groups are Kinder Cleaners, Bin Liners, Eco Friendly Airways, Drain Filters, Stormwater Stencils and Sustainability Secrets. We think that if the groups succeed then we could save the world. The O Mathalon On Thursday the 30th Of August most of the children in Mr McKinlay s math group went to the Edgar centre to take part in the O Mathalon. In the O Mathalon schools from Dunedin and Otago worked out problems at a table and ran to a marker. If they answered correctly teams received another question, otherwise they could pass or skip that question. Mr McKinlay and everyone in the teams thought this year the questions were harder than usual. The year 6 Group 1 came 24th out of 44 teams and Group 2 placed 34th. The year 5 team performed better placing 16th out of 44 teams. Jenna

All the year 4,5 and 6 all had to do the cross country. The year 4 boys was won by Will Cambell and the year 5 boys Regan McGrath. The year 5 girls was won by Sienna Forgie and the year 6 boys by Ethan Ryder with Liam Cuddie finishing in 2nd. In a close finish the year 6 girls was won by Kayla Hickling with Anneka Stevenson 2nd. The children shown in the Results list will be going to the Otago Champs at Kaikorai Valley College on September 14. Good luck to you all! We have a problem with nits in parts of our school and are looking for a group of parents to come in and treat children (please note that only children with parental permission will be treated). We have run this program before with great success and are looking tot start it up again at Elmgrove. We hope to run the program on a Monday morning starting at 9am, by doing it on a Monday we will hopefully kill off any nits that have formed over the weekend.
