1 ST PATRICK S PRIMARY SCHOOL 16 Childers Street Mentone 3946 Phone: (03) Fax: (03) principal@spmentone.catholic.edu.au Website: Dear Parents, Newsletter No: 23 August 2 nd 2018 ST PATRICKS MAKES STATE FINALS Tuesday was a very exciting day for our school, as our football team represented the Kingston Division in the Southern Region Finals. The team was ready for the day and participated in three round robin matches which they won to reach the final. The final was a hard fought game against Woodlands Primary School with our team down by 7 points at half time. They continued to fight hard in the second half and scored three unanswered goals to win the final. The final score was St Patrick s to Woodlands We were very proud of the team and all members of the squad played their role in this amazing win. The team will represent the southern region of Melbourne in the state finals which will be played on Wednesday 22 nd August at St Helena. As far as we know this is the first time we have had a football team reach the state finals. There are eight schools remaining from all over the state and we will participate in a round robin carnival against them to see who will become the state champion for Our news has also made the SMJFL website with a great write up on our team. Well done to all the team and good luck for the final round. HOOPTIME On Tuesday, our Year 4 students participated in a basketball tournament at Dandenong Basketball Stadium. It was pleasing that they all had the opportunity to have a go and we are extremely grateful to all the parents who assisted in coaching teams to ensure all the children were able to participate. Thanks go to Mrs Michelsson for organising the day. PRODUCTION 2018 The students will be given a T- Shirt as part of their costume for the production this year. Below is a picture of each of the logos that will be on the shirts. A reminder to all families that we send a memo home each Wednesday with production updates. DISCO AND MOVIE NIGHT Last Friday night was a great night of entertainment for the school. With the Prep and Year 1 students enjoying their movie night and the Year 2 Year 6 students enjoying their Disco. I would like to thank the parents from the P&F who co-ordinated a great evening as well as the many staff who were there to assist on the night. Thanks to DJ JD (Mr Daidone) for leading our music on the night. FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION On next school Mass will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption which will be on Wednesday 15 th August at 9:15am. 5 Sustainability.from Liz Lamb (Sustainability Leader) Sustainability News Garden to Kitchen- Our Year 3 students have finished their part in the garden to kitchen program. Every student was open to trying new foods and all enjoyed taking part in the cooking and tastings! The Year 4 classes are now participating in the program, beginning with cooking cauliflower rice using cauliflowers and spring onions fresh from our garden. Friday Markets- It is great to see many families purchasing from our regular Friday markets, enjoying fresh and wholesome vegetables. Nude Foods- It is great to see that many students are remembering our NUDE FOOD WEDNESDAYS. This is an important practice in our school to reduce the amount of landfill we are producing. In order to do this we need help. It would be great if all students could be using containers for their snack and lunch items instead of plastic wrap or foil (where practicable) and brought to school foods that they will eat, and not be tempted to throw away. Chickens- Many of our original chickens which we hatched are unfortunately no longer with us. One lucky year level is going to asked to take part in a hatching program to boost our chicken numbers. These students will get to see the chicks hatch and care for them until they are old enough to be housed in our chicken coop. The lucky year level will also get to name each chick. The eggs should be arriving soon!

8 Article SMJFL St Bedes/Mentone players showcase their skills in SSV Championship Wednesday, Aug 01, 2018 by smjfl If footy on a Sunday wasn t enough, a group of junior players from St Bedes/Mentone AFC have brought their A-game in their school footy as well. On Tuesday 31 July, students from St Patrick s Mentone recently played in the School Sports Victoria Primary School Southern Metropolitan Regional Championship. To round out a successful season during the year, they were able to secure the win and the 2018 Championship. All the players have developed their football locally, coming from a combination of the Under 11 and Under 12 age groups at St Bedes/Mentone AFC in the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL). The SMJFL would like congratulate all the players for their tremendous effort, and wish them well for their upcoming games, and remainder of the SMJFL season. Progressing from the regional Championships, the team will move through to the SSV Primary School AFL State Finals. The club and league are sure to be well represented. The State Finals are to be held on Wednesday 22 August.

9 Parish and Community Book week dress up To celebrate book week, we will be having dress up day on Tuesday 21st of August. Students are asked to dress up as their favourite book character. A parade will be held after assembly to show off all the wonderful costumes. The theme for this year s book week is 'Find your treasure'. Students may wish to choose their costumes based on this theme, or choose another of their favourite characters. FOUND! A set of Ford car keys have been found on the school grounds. If you have recently lost your keys please attend at the school office to check if these are your keys.
