1 September/October Edition 2012 CONTENTS WELCOME SDO REPORT HOCKEY CRICKET ORIENTEERING FUNDRAISING CHAIRMANS FINAL THOUGHT WELCOME Welcome to the September/October newsletter from Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club and its member sections. The aim of this newsletter is to bring the sections together as one to celebrate successes on and off the field and to join up as one for social events. If any member has any news or information they feel should appear in the newsletter please contact Jordi Rose via I hope you enjoy reading. SDO NEWS Hi all! The dark nights and winter are approaching us quickly and my emphasis has switched from Cricket to Hockey and Orienteering for the next few months. I have commenced my coaching with the hockey section under the watchful eye of Richard Barter and I am learning a lot about the game while doing this, I have also secured some potential funding to increase adult participation in the hockey section and to also run a Friday night primary school session with the hope of feeding players into our current youth section. Orienteers have also been busy in booking in all of the winter festivals for the primary school children; I am looking forward to being involved in these once again however I have requested that they leave the snow behind this year. I am hoping also to get some secondary school activity started in the New Year. I have continued some coaching work with the cricket section with the final outcome being a girl s indoor tournament on the 27 th November; this should launch the pre-season nicely. Finally huge thanks to all for sending through articles for this newsletter.
2 HOCKEY We have successfully started the season. All teams are now up and running, Captains have been appointed to all teams and the league has started in earnest. We have seen a big increase in new members, and all squads are running with decent numbers in them... we all hope as the weather turns a bit colder that this continues! On the Junior front numbers are even more encouraging. The boom from the Olympics is definitely being felt, and we have maxed out our capacity in the Junior Section in the short term. The minis sessions (under 10s) has seen numbers hit 75-80, while the senior end of the age groups (11-16s) is also having 70+. This is fantastic, and the support we have seen from new coaches and parents in helping is great. It has put a strain on our ability to meet demand, and this will be monitored over the next few weeks. In October we have launched a new weekly newsletter called "Shortcorner" which is designed to report the weekend's fixtures and results, and gives team the opportunity to write up their matches for the rest of the club. In turn we have also re-launched a "Fantasy Hockey League" again aimed at getting members to take an interest in the results and performances of other team and individuals. A quiz was arranged at the end of September, and our next social is Halloween weekend - Saturday 27th October. All welcome - see separate article. Look out for the Pumpkins as teams will be producing Pumpkins for Prizes!! 3 CRICKET September was the month of Celebration! Whilst the 1 st team lost the last SPL League game of the season they were crowned Champions for the 2012 season. St Cross s win was down to two performances, 4 wickets from the former Notts and Hampshire pace bowler Richard Logan who ripped through the South Wilts top order, and no less than 161 runs from the bat of Adam Rouse who was later awarded a contract with Hampshire for next year!! The club finished off the season with a couple friendly fixtures trying to make up for all the games lost in the summer. We played my old club Farley in a very entertaining game, lots of youth and older players all mixed in! The final game was a South Wilts 40 plus side taking on the Wiltshire 50s! Tim Mynott captained the Wilts 50s and took 5 wickets to win the game! Club Dinner It really has been a golden summer for South Wilts Cricket. Southern Premier League Champions, The Jack Wilcox Cup Champions, Regional Winners of the National Knockout Cup. Trophies too for the youth section, and a county contract for Jack Sheppard at Hampshire. Who could forget Glenn Maxwell who left us early to represent Australia in the UAE and then the T20 World cup! Needless to say the annual club presentation dinner was well supported last week. It was made all the more special by being held in our fantastic club house. Congratulations to James Hayward who was awarded the Clubman of the year award, and to Jack Mynott who won the Young player award. Rob Franklin won the 1 st team player for his outstanding contributions all season. As soon as the season was over the wicket was scarified, spiked and seeded and germination has now taken place. In November the square will be aerated to improve root growth through the winter months. It just remains for all at the cricket club to wish the Rugby and Hockey sections a truly successful winter. We shall be down to support you and your events so look out! NEWSFLASH Please check out our new website We are also on Facebook and Twitter for up to the minute news on events and results. A massive thank you to Sam Pittman and James Hayward for all their work on the website. Fantastic effort!
4 ORIENTEERING The Club s big news since the last newsletter was Emily Benham s Silver medal in the Sprint race in the World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships in August. Racing in the dry 40 C heat in the forests of Veszprem in Hungary, she had the race of her life, beating the 2010 World Champion of Poland, Anna Kaminska by 30 seconds and narrowly missing the gold medal which went to Christine Schaffner of Switzerland with a time of minutes. Building on her early promise as a junior, this was a fantastic result for Emily and represents the first ever elite medal won by Team GB in a World Championship event. A truly exceptional performance achieved during this Olympic year. On the final day of the competition, Emily had another great ride and achieved a personal best of 9th in the long distance race. Navigating a course over 21 Km and 250 m of climb to visit 24 control points, she finished only 5 minutes behind the winner, Susanna Laurila of Finland, who won in minutes, and only 30 seconds away from a top 6 position. The competition was particularly tough with the top 32 women all finishing within 10 minutes behind the winner. Emily only started Mountain Bike Orienteering in 2007 after having orienteered with Sarum Orienteering Club since the age of 11. She achieved four top 6 results from Junior World Championships in 2008/2009 and was chosen as Wiltshire and Swindon s Sports Personality of the Year in See Emily s blog at for more details. (credit Hans Jørgen Kvåle) The Sarum team pose with the Sutton Park rabbit. Runners left to right - Lisa White, Alex Buck, Duncan White, Lucy Butt, Jack Benham and Harry Butt. (credit Robert Lines) Trophy for Sarum Juniors Juniors from Woodfalls, Morgans Vale and Landford won a trophy at the Peter Palmer inter-club relay competition at Sutton Coldfield last weekend. The team of 6 runners from Sarum Orienteering Club came 7 th out of 28 clubs and took the prize for the fastest small club (less than 100 members). The runners camped in the local leisure centre overnight before starting the relay race around Sutton Park in the dark at 5 am. The competition for juniors between the ages of 11 and 18 is named after one of Britain s famous orienteering coaches. The Sarum team included Lucy Butt who represented GBR at the recent Junior World Championships.
5 SOCIAL, MEMBERSHIP & FUNDRAISING Primarily we are working on image, social ties, membership and very importantly, fundraising by any means possible which includes both raising money and cutting unnecessary costs. How we have improved our image in the past year! We have a fabulous new pavilion and now we have a new web site, thanks to James Hayward and Sam Pittman! We now need to use it! Advertising flyers are in the process of production we are getting there. Debbie Pittman has taken on Membership and has helped with some of the structure of Hirings, which is an extremely important area where we can extend and improve our takings Work is in progress to extend our hires for more funeral wakes via Gerry, and holiday activity/sports camps (Jordan), and marketing ourselves for corporate days. Our small committee meets every three months can you help us? We need someone to run a quiz evening for the Sports Club funds, any takers? There are lots of people who wish to partake in a quiz evening, with food, and if you can start the ball rolling, by running one we can see about carrying it on! We also need an events manager are you interested in this? We have the ideas - all we need is someone prepared to give a bit of time Chris Watts has volunteered to play the fiddle in the bar area to create some interest in live music - thanks Chris we look forward to this, which I believe will be on one of the midweek Hockey evenings. Bill Toop is in the process of completing an artwork of the new pavilion with a cricket match in progress. Bill came to a match in August and started his work. When complete he will donate the work to us for whatever use we want! This is very generous (Bills commissions cost normally over 1000) Please let me know if any of you would be interested in a print at a reasonable price? If you can help please call me on bill@mouldings-builders.co.uk committee meeting at 6.30 on Monday 22 nd October 2012 or come to our next CHAIRMAN S FINAL THOUGHTS We have now been in our new home for 9 months now and still the feel good factor reverberates around all sections of the club. The Hockey Club seems to go from strength to strength. Increased usage of the club during the summer months a very successful summer league held on top of a very exciting winter. The Rugby Team has made a fresh start and look forward to a successful season. The Cricket club have won the Southern Electric Premier League for only third time. Whilst celebrating our success we must not forget that the overheads for running our club are much higher than before and we must continue to fund raise and maximise use of the club bar and function room. If any member has a Birthday Party, Christenings Retirement party or any other event that could be held at the club please consider it. How about a Team Quiz evening? With three members teams representing the sections, Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Orienteering. Two semi-finals, and a final all in the same evening, In perhaps a question of sport format. Please everybody take a peek and use the new Club Web site which will be launched very shortly. The new committee structure is bedding down and lots of work is going on behind the scenes to make the club run even better. Good luck to the Rugby and Hockey sections in the new seasons and well done cricket.
