With our club having an aging membership it was gratifying to see new member, 19 year old Lucien Haines welcomed into the Club in July, he is in the process of restoring the family MGB currently working on the engine and transmission, good onya Lucien. Some years back our committee looked at the future of the Club, for obvious reasons, we are all getting older, the question was, what will our Club look like in years time? Will our members still be driving the same MGs as today? Some food for thought. Thanks to those members who took up my request to submit some articles of interest, please keep them coming in. And don t forget, please support our sponsors whenever possible and be sure to let them know you are an MG Car Club member See Motorsport Report. Printed by Kwik Kopy Unley. 10 MG Car Club of South Australia MGC NEWS MGC conversations with Richard Mixture, August 2018 MGC Thermostats H ello, it s Richard here again to talk about a hot head or really it s about keeping a cool head. If you remember that nice young MGC Coordinator had a hot head and fixed it by replacing the viscous fan clutch which he had first modified way back in The fan now keeps the C cool but the thermostat was a 71 item which is too cool and needs to be replaced with a standard 82 thermostat. So what is a thermostat, just in case you re wondering? It is a valve that regulates the flow of coolant from the engine to the radiator. When the thermostat is closed (in a cold engine) it stops coolant flow to the radiator which accelerates the warming of the coolant until it reaches the correct operating opening temperature (or the prescribed temperature of the thermostat). It then opens allowing coolant to flow through the radiator to be cooled. With varying driving conditions the thermostat will open and close depending on the temperature of the coolant. Directly below the thermostat opening in the head of an MGC is a bypass hole that allows coolant to flow to the water pump and through the engine when the coolant is cold and the thermostat is closed. When the MGC engine was designed a non-bypass thermostat was specified which allowed coolant to flow through the by-pass hole when it was both hot and cold. Modern thermostats have a by-pass valve (a secondary valve or foot valve) that closes off the by -pass hole when it is open. When the by-pass hole is closed all of the coolant must go through the radiator to be cooled making the cooling system more efficient. A modern by-pass thermostat can be fitted an MGC but the foot valve is too far away from the by-pass hole to work efficiently. It needs to reach a further 3mm closer to the hole. To achieve this extra length a washer/washers can be soldered to the foot of the thermostat. Thermostats often have a jiggle pin in the flange that allows trapped air to be released. The jiggle pin should be rotated so that it is at the highest point in order to release any trapped air. This rotation is not important in the MGC as the thermostat is located in a horizontal position in the head. Cars that do not have a jiggle pin in the thermostat usually have a bleed notch or some other method to release trapped air. When an engine has overheated it may have damaged the thermostat so it s a good idea to check it and replace it if necessary. So which thermostat works best in the old C? After sharing information from my radiator man and with Bruce in Queensland, he did his own research and decided that a 71 C thermostat was the best temperature to use. When that young fella replaced his thermostat some time ago, he used a DT 13C, a 71 C thermostat which is now too cold. The MGC factory workshop manual recommends the standard temperature thermostat of 82 C, or 74 C for hot countries and 88 C for cold countries. While parts of Australia can be very hot, a 71 C thermostat is definitely too cold for where I live, so it s back to standard for our nice young Register coordinator. 8

MG Car Club of South Australia BREAKFAST RUN REPORT From..Steve Spong, Photos by David McNabb Breakfast Run to Carisbrooke Park, Salisbury 24 June 2018 nce more we were lucky with the O weather for the breakfast run to Carisbrooke Park, opposite the "Old Spot" pub, Salisbury. That is apart from Andy Furman who was hoping for rain to try out his brand new roof on the B. He has had it fitted since his old roof split and he got soaked on his drive home from the last run to Mount Barker! Also proudly showing off his new accessory was Geoff Glasson, who had fitted electric power steering to the B, making it now finger light to park and much enjoyed by Judy on the drive. It was great to welcome new Club members Jenny & Linton Schiller on hopefully their first breakfast run of many. Jenny drove up in her new acquisition, a stunning 1955 red MGF. It literally sparkled and every nut and bolt gleamed!. She had advertised her desire for such a car online and bought it from NSW, where it had been lovingly restored but lived life as a trailer queen. Hence it is fantastic that Jenny is now proudly driving this car, as indeed it should be! So thanks to all who came and supported the Club and this monthly event. 14 MG Car Club of South Australia TeChnical TopiC By..Bob Schapel T DRY-DECKING an ENGINE he coolant in car engines normally flows from block to head, via the head gasket holes. However, I have changed this system in my TC Special. Before 1995, my old engine used to lose coolant when I drove it very hard. Gases from the combustion space would push across the gasket face and seep into the water jacket, blowing out some coolant. Because the car has a Laystall, aluminium head, extra torque on the head nuts would have risked distortion. So, when I built the new motor in 1995, I blocked off all the holes in the head and block faces. I had some welded, and sealed the others using threaded brass plugs and Devcon epoxy. I then diverted the coolant flow externally from the back of the block to the back of the head. This modification is called dry-decking. Now, when the gasket leaks a bit, the gas moves across the surface and vents harmlessly to the atmosphere, without affecting the coolant. I made the same modification to my brother Bill s Special (now in the hands of niece, Georgie) when I built that motor in Coolant flow in most engines is fairly simple. However, the T-Type has a complex flow system which requires additional modifications in the drydecking process. The water pump pushes coolant along that familiar square passage cast into the right hand side of the T-Type block. Internally, at the back, that passage curves upwards and emerges only at the rearmost, large coolant hole. That hole (two on TF blocks) is not well connected to space around the bores or the other coolant holes. To allow a clear passage for coolant, I drilled large holes behind the core plugs from the square passage to the void around the bores. Although it might be unnecessary, I also drilled a large hole half way between the two core plugs and fitted an extra (threaded) core plug to seal off the outer wall. This opened the way for coolant to flow to the space outside the bores. I then rigged up an external coolant pipe from the core plug at the back of the block to the plate on the back of the head. I also fitted a small secondary tube very high in the block to prevent any air-lock. I originally thought I had invented the idea but later found that it was well known, long before I was born! The race team at the MG Factory used this system on the K3 based EX135 record breaker, and many years later, they cast some special dry-deck T-Type blocks. The latter had a raised pad and stud holes high on the right hand side to take an external coolant fitting. I would like to know how many were cast, and where they were used. I have been fortunate to see one, but was unable to study it closely to learn about any other detail. The original cooling system works perfectly well on street engines and most race engines, but if head gaskets become an issue, dry-decking is an option. 12

A VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Ferrari Club National Rally Track Day Super Sprint very good friend of our club at MSCA Super Sprints at Mallala is Ian Crouch, an Alfa Club member, drives an Alfa Spyder and Porsche Boxter, Ian is also a committee member of the SA Ferrari Club and is organising their National Rally to be held in Adelaide during the week of 15th to 20th October. On the Wednesday 17th they are conducting a Track Day Super Sprint Format at The Bend Motorsport Park Tailem Bend on the West Circuit (that we used for the MG Challenge) and Ian has approached us and other MSCA clubs me to see if there would be any of our members who would be prepared to joint other flag marshals for the day. He realises that many of our club members carry out these roles at Mallala Super Sprints and are therefore experi- August 2018 enced in the task, ( being mid week SAMROA flag marshals are not readily available ) and experienced volunteers are what he needs. The West Circuit has 12 flag points plus the starter, of which only 9 would need to be manned, so while it is practical to have two people at each location he needs at least one experienced flag marshal in each point. Ian had offered to pay our members for their assistance, however I advised him that this presents a precedent that could jeopardise seeking volunteers in the future, he has therefore offered to donate money to the clubs that supply the volunteers, which I consider would be more appropriate. Ian would see that volunteers would be well fed and looked after. If you are prepared to help Ian please contact him at, icrouch@adam.com.au or I have indicated my help as has Berry Treffers so it would be practical to meet somewhere, perhaps the clubrooms, and share the rides. Ian estimates 50 or so Ferrari s would be competing Laurie Houghton 17

MG Car Club of South Australia ROAD TRIP FOR A B From..Mark Abraham ince my early 20s, I ve had an admiration for the small 2 door sports S coupe that looks like a windup toy. Now that might be a little belittling for the cool and sexy MGB, but you must admit, it kinda fits. So, with my 50 th birthday on the horizon, I knew it was time to chase my dream to own and drive my very own toy car. Having discussed this more than once with long-time MG car clubber, Maurice (Mozza) Linehan, I knew exactly who to call to assist in the chase. As soon as I quizzed him and asked for help, he was as alert as a stallion in the paddock. With very clear parameters of model, year, colour and price, the search was on and the s, phone calls, texts and hyperlinks flowed. Every possible hiding spot for a decent B was investigated and ruled out or in, checked and followed up. Eventually, we agreed that a 64, British Racing Green B for sale in Geelong was worth the trip. Mozza had the car trailer, I had the Prado and with an Airbnb cottage booked, we hit the freeway. A couple of bakeries later, we arrived in Geelong to meet Martin and Dawn for our first look at the prize. Unregistered and uninsured, we could only do a few laps around their cul-de-sac in the toy car but with Mozza s Magnet Test passing with flying colours, we seemed to be on to a good thing. It turned out, Martin had worked on the car more than he had driven it, so it took some negotiating to see any sort of price negotiation (reduction). We decided to sleep on it and it was the main topic of conversation over a great pizza and bottle of red during the evening. The night went on later than we had intended and some of the sights in a local bar, well they had to be seen to be believed. It must be said, we were having such a great time searching for a B that we considered not buying a car at all and continuing the search as a means of having driving trips away. Oh, the places, we could go. However, on 2 nd inspection the following morning, we both realised it was too good an opportunity to pass over and 20
promptly agreed on a price and my toy car was soon on the trailer and heading for its new home in SA. August

M August 2018 MOTORSPORT OFFICIALS By.. Bob Schapel any of us have been taking part in MGCC motorsport for a long time. It has been nearly fifty years in my case. The preparation, tinkering on the day, perusal of results and debriefing, probably absorbs most of our thoughts. However, the people who make such events possible deserve a substantial portion! Natmeets, Club Challenges, Sprints, Motorkhanas and Hill-Climbs take a huge amount of work to run. Organisers and officials often have to cope with early starts, poor weather, unfortunate track incidents, unknown new venues and other difficult situations. Yet the same people are willing to do it all over again, allowing the next competition to go ahead as planned. Recent Motorsport Secretaries, Bev, Laurie, Murray and Tim never cease to amaze me. Not only do they organise, officiate and compete but they have been doing so for such a long time. Sue Stevenson, Marg Hall, Barry Kitts, Darryl Siggs and Darryl Warman regularly help us despite being from other clubs! These people are just the tip of the iceberg. Whether they marshal or wave flags on the day, or contribute months of organisation, we must certainly let these people know how much their work is appreciated. At Club meetings or events, it would be good if we competitors shouted them a drink at the bar. 26 MG Car Club of South Australia PRE-WAR & T - REGISTER From..John Bray, Photos from David McNabb Register meeting 5 July at 21 Hillside Road Aldgate, host Leigh Ritcher. Hello Darkness my old Friend We ve come to Hillside Road again Because a Mg s softly creeping Dropped its oil while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in the rain Still remains Within the sounds of silence. And in the naked light I saw Heaps of members maybe more Members talking without thinking Members hearing without listening And the Boss issuing orders that voices never share And no one really cared To disturb the sounds of silence. I do apologise to Paul Simon and Art Garfunckle for the plagiarism of their song, seemed relevant for the theme on the night- BOTR 24 Darkness it was and we were not expecting street lights, kerbs or footpaths again this year but Leigh went to great length to illuminate his driveway with a hurrican lamp strung up in the tree which was perfectly alright, no one made it to the neighbours lawn thank god. Leigh s Bar illuminated the cosy garage, described to me by one as quite an intermate meeting, thanks to Leigh and the new gas heater that he purchased that day. Register vehicles totalled 9, signed in were 31, however 34 presented for pizza s! Apologies: Received were Bazzica s, A Rudiger ( daughter s wedding in Sicily),A & G Mclean, P Wallace, S Ewart, T Wright, D Herbert, R O Malley, C & H Bennett, B Forth, J Davies, J Whiting, P Shipside, D Walker, D & J Pearson, & Ken Burke Many who sent apologies had very reasonable reasons being overseas, however there were two who had very questionable excuses for not turning up, for example: Don Walker- 1. My dog ate my invitation. 2. A kangaroo was seen on the Strathalbyn road, I did not want to hit it. 3. It clashes with rearrange my sock drawer day The ghost who walks who else would offer what he says is a humble apology? Terry Wright must be frightened of the dark, after spending a very pleasant day with lunch with good mate Willow, the returned Gipsy, he decides that the cold is just too much to contemplate
leaving photographic duties solely with David TD McNabb. General Business: Russell Garth advises that Motor Registration needs to see your MG CC SA membership ID when negotiating services relating to renewals and the like. Bob Schapel requests that members keep an eye out on the roads for Geoff Barnes rear shock absorber off his TB, apparently it has fallen off, if you see it, pick it up he needs one. Bob has also visited Jack Whiting to see his TC Special and help him out with a spline for a decent steering wheel for the car. ( hope to see Jack as a member of the club soon) Peter Cundy held us spellbound with his recent purchase of adjustable head spanners picked up from Bister Heritage event, north of Oxford UK, for those really hard spots to get into on the NA it seems. Impressive name too, RATCH- ETECH. Peter picked up another nifty device, a small piece of aluminium channel fixed to the rod stabilising bracket off the radiator shell that supports the bonnet in a August 2018 vertical position without it touching the scuttle. He has the affixed to the TD and proudly shows that it works. Amazing! Andrew Bate is working on getting his hood made for the TF soon. Russell Garth is wanting members to send information on their cars, recently we received details from Jenny & Linton Schiller for their TF 1500, chassis 9628, XPEG 3496, Rego MG1955, beautiful red car, please send your details in to russjg17@yahoo.com The Gold, Brian Golding, our great mate from Murray Bridge who got a mention in last month s report, proudly displayed the pistons from his seized engine. It is well known now that you simply do not feed a TC engine on Ethanol Fuel it seems, no need to experiment as Brian has it well and truly covered and can offer expert advice. Apparently he has history with his racing bikes in times past with similar episodes. Tut tut eh Goldy? Was good to see Ronnie Jellet back up with Goldy although not feeling well he sat out in the car to rest up a bit, hope things improve for you Ron in the very near future. General business was accelerated to a speedy close with the arrival of the Pizza boy from Aldgate Gourmet Pizzas, I now know that to bring the meetings to a manageable end it needs for the food to be laid out in front of the members, I will adopt this technique in future. The legend who is Laurie Foody turned 88 on the 13 June, wonderful achievement indeed and it is amazing that he can give up the TD on a wet night and drive up in the Porsche, managing to park on the road and not on Leigh s neighbours lawn is another achievement. 25
MG Car Club of South Australia TC Sump: A chap has rung me, he has a sump off a 1948 TC for sale if anyone is wanting one, call me up if you want details. It was his deceased brother s car. 30 MG Car Club of South Australia MSCA Super Sprint, Sunday 15 July A cold and windy day at Mallala was what greeted 77 competitors and friends on Sunday, but as they say, when the going gets tough the tough get going. There were six MG competitors, John Davies, Jason Edwards, Craig Reudiger, Nick Micklem, Dick manning and Alf Smith first time seen on the track in an MGF. Our Club was rostered to provide officials and 7 members attended, Peter Coulson, Tony Freckelton and myself were freezing in flag point 5 at the end of the back straight, I was not sure where the other members were. Murray Stephenson kept warm in the timing tower as assistant Clerk of Course, and tells me there were a number (7) of other club members present. Laurie Houghton 28 Up Coming events Sunday 19 August MSCA Super Sprint Round 4 with Come & Try, Mallala Note the change of date for the round 4 super sprint. It was on the 26 th but that clashes with the V8 Taxi Cabs at The Bend so the sprint was brought forward a week. This round includes a Come & Try section for those who haven t tried sprinting before or are looking to polish their skills. In the C&T group you will receive expert classroom tuition and supervised on track sessions to learn what it s all about and to have some fun. Alternatively, consider giving the opportunity to a family member or friend. Participants do not need to belong to a car club and they purchase a competition licence for the day. It s great fun and you will learn something. Be careful, motorsport is addictive! November Adelaide Rally Following the success of our stages at Mallala in the 2017 Adelaide Rally, the MG Car Club has been asked to help out with the Adelaide Rally again in 2018 running a number of stages at The Bend. More detail will come to hand over the next few months but, if you re interested, mark Wednesday 28 November in your diary as a day to come and help out while watching some top action and great cars.

MG Car Club of South Australia MID WEEK LUNCH RUN NEWS From..Roger Polkinghorne T Thursday 12 July he weather looked quite threatening for the July lunch run to the Rex Hotel particularly when morning tea was in the hills at the Crafers Hotel. The MG drivers who took a chance and ignored the forecast of a shower or two were rewarded with only a few drops of rain on the windscreen. The cars finished the day clean and dry. The route briefly brought us through the Adelaide hills which are now looking very green following recent winter rain. We then came down Greenhill Road which these days is quite rough in an MG but provides the best view of the city and suburbs of any road entering Adelaide. Chris and Annette Kinney gave the COOL 1963 Dodge Phoenix a run which was a treat as it s rarely seen these days. Alan and Sandra Cardnell came for the first time this year so Alan was able to test the blue B and more to the point himself through the bends on Greenhill Road. Mike Greenwood and Jan drove up from Strathalbyn in Mike s recently purchased MG6. Mike has grabbed a part of British motoring history with this nice looking car which is loaded with many outstanding features. It was also fortuitous that Mike should come to this run as he has offered to arrange the August run to Strathalbyn. Diane and David Holmes were unable to attend the run due to David s progress in getting back to full fitness. To this end the Holmes have sadly decided after fourteen years not to continue arranging the lunch runs. They have done a marvellous job over this period. We are extremely grateful for their dedicated efforts and we will miss Diane with the red folder in her hand ensuring everything is running smoothly and David with the camera ensuring we feature in the photographic section of the magazine. Thanks to everyone who came and supported the run and to first timers Barry Spencer in his green MGB and Dean Hosking in his impressive MGB V8. Next mid-week lunch run will be on 9 August 2018 to Strathalbyn meeting at the Crafers Hotel, Crafers at 10.30am and departing 11.30am. Everyone is welcome. Please book with MIKE GREENWOOD if you would like to come so the venues can be advised of numbers attending. M I K E G R E E N W O O D mikeg@adam.com.au or
