7 April 2019 Editorial From..Laurie Houghton Editor T his month we see a couple of members vacate their seats on the committee, Steve Spong who has moved to Victor Harbour, Murray Stephenson to Macclesfield and Peter Coulson to new places. MGCC Clubrooms Monthly General Meetings Held at 8.00 pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Clubrooms. All those who are interested in MGs are welcome. 8 H MG Car Club of South Australia PRESIDENTS REPORT From... i Members and Friends. This is my last President's Report and it will be a brief and heartfelt one. Thank you to the two Committees over the last two years; they have been fantastic, their input, enthusiasm and passion for the Club have been remarkable. I also thank Rosa for her support and encouragement. AGM The annual event was held and saw most of our nominations filled. Tim Edmonds is our new President, and I am confident he we do us proud in this role, with Neil Williams assisting as Vice President. Berry Treffers has stepped into the Secretary's role. Bev Waters is now our Motorsport Secretary and Bev will be assisted by Steve Bowra. Mark Abraham has offered to look after our Website and Facebook, thank you Mark. AWARD WINNERS Congratulations to all the Award Winners announced at the AGM, you have all worked hard and are worthy recipients. APRIL This month sees a T-Register, MGF Register, a Mid-Week Lunch Run, a National Meeting in Queensland and a Breakfast Run to Murray Bridge, so the new year is up and running. I would like to acknowledge Ian Curwen- Walker for his many dedicated years as CAMS Delegate and Murray Stephenson as our untiring Motorsport Secretary. PRESENTED TO THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, 12 th MARCH 2019 SECRETARY S ANNUAL REPORT by Peter Coulson I hereby present this sixty third (63 rd ) Annual Secretary s Report of THE MG CAR CLUB OF SA INCORPORATED, covering January to December, As the new boy in the job, I thank Arthur Ruediger for his work in the role over the last 13 years. The hand-over was beneficial and sometimes still on-going. The role of Secretary for this club, is varied and at times all consuming. I thank the members for their patience in my getting to grips with the role, and wish the new secretary all the best in his new challenge. Our membership reduced slightly during the year. Total membership at the end of the 2018 club year, was 919 down from the 2017 number of 937 members. 11 April 2019 MGC Register Coordinator Ian Hobbs MGF & Modern MG s Register Coordinators Dick Manning, Neil Williams To the committee members and appointees, many thanks for their contribution over the past 12 months. As a people club, it is the committee and volunteers who gave freely of their time to promote, arrange and conduct the activities of our club during the year. With no financial compensation, our club would not operate as successfully as it does without these people. Thank you to Adrian Ward for his tenure as President over the last two years. To those continuing on the committee, and to those not continuing, a big thank you. I encourage you to consider being on the committee and/or being an organiser of an activity / event. Club Activities 2018 provided a full and varied calendar of events to suit all members of our club. At times it seemed as though we were spending more time at the club or at events than at home! Register Meetings celebrate the different models of the marque; Pre War & T - Register, monthly meetings were held in member s homes or garages. The BOTR John Bray conducts these meetings in the best of bonhomie, making regular and new attendees feel welcome. The Irving Cup, awarded to the member who drives their Pre War or T Type to the most T Register events and monthly general meetings, was awarded to Bob Schapel. MGA / Magnette Register 8 meetings, including an the Poker Run, coffee run to Aldinga Airfield, and the Christmas lunch at The Scenic Hotel in December. All events managed by Sandra A Cardnell, who is continuing as the coordinator for The MGA trophy was awarded to Nick Micklem. MGB Register 4 runs/events organised by Steve Spong, including a beach run to Largs Bay in February, to the Strathalbyn Heritage centre in June, the international coffee day at Victor Harbor in October and a visit to Finch Restorations, Mt Barker in November. C Register coordinated by Ian Hobbs, had its annual Automnal run to Aldinga Airfield & its Torsion Bar run to the Harvest Café in Mylor. MGF & Modern MG s Register - Dick Manning and his offsider Neil Williams held MGF s nights at the club rooms. The most attended would the night that Garry Chapman and Ed Ordynski gave their talk and presentation on Garry s activities on the London to Sydney rally. Contact with Newspot MG was established and the partnership between the club and Newspot MG is being developed. The Tony Hick trophy goes to Darryl Kelly. Breakfast Runs these Sunday morning runs are popular events on the calendar with up to 50 members and their cars attending each month. We were invited to join the Christies Beach Sailing club for The Big Breakfast at their club house in February. Mid week lunch runs this monthly activity is an ideal opportunity for the retirees, and/or those with a spare moment, to meet for coffee and then travel to selected 9

12 MG Car Club of South Australia venues for a relaxing lunch. The popularity of these outings is increasing, even with a change to the organiser midway through the year. Thanks to Di and David Holmes for coordinating Mid week lunch runs over the last 14 years. Rodger Polkinghorne, Mike Greenwood, Graham Loader and Garry Chapman continued the good work, and with their support, the Mid week lunch runs have continued in Parades & Displays the marque and club were well represented to provide cars for the various parades & displays in These events included 3 Christmas parades, the McLaren Vale Vintage Festival and the Bay Sheffield parade for past and current winners. The feature display event was the All MG Day in September at the Torrens Parade grounds which had nearly 100 cars on display. Motorsport The motorsport calendar for 2018 comprised of 18 events which were used to calculate the Club Competition Champion. This year the eligible events included 5 motorkhanas, 4 multi club hill climbs at Collingrove and 5 MSCA super sprints at Mallala. Plus 2 competition events at each of the National Meeting and The MG Challenge. Thanks to Murray Stephenson for his service as Motor Sport Secretary over the last 8 years. In addition to the above other motor sport events entered by club members included outings at Sandown Park, Winton, Philip Island, Legend of The Lakes Hill Climb, the South Australian Hill Climb Championships, the South Australian Motorkhana Championships, the Victoria Park sprint at The Adelaide Motor Sport Festival, and the Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb. The MG Challenge The MG Car Club SA were hosts for the 2018 challenge. This challenge was very challenging, as the event was held at the Bend, Tailem Bend. The first time the club held an event there, and possibly the first event held by a club at the Bend. The hill climb was held at Collingrove. The presentation dinner was held in the Murray Bridge Golf Club with MG Victoria declared winner of the 2018 Challenge. The Clare Weekender organised, arranged by Barb Harrington and Wendy Turner. A 3 day, 2 night social event with driving around the Clare Valley region. Attended by 60 people and their MG s. Who could forget Geoff Goode s outfit for the fancy dress? (take a bow Geoff) 2018 Annual (Cecil) Kimber Run the twenty fourth run to date, was held in November with a total of 120 cars forming up for the start at Edwards Reserve on Anzac Highway for the run to The Birdwood National Motor Museum via Lyndoch. Thanks to Berry Treffers and his team of helpers for another successful Kimber Run. A special thank you also to the RAA crew & vans that were on hand for any breakdowns. Historic Registration the historic registration committee led by Geoff Goode, again provided their voluntary services on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, we now have over 450 vehicles on the historic registration system. Regalia thanks to Geraldine Hough her efforts in the 1 st half of the year, and to Barrie Spencer for taking up the role later in the year. Watch out for the new regalia for the 2019 season. 10

13 April 2019 The library - thanks to our new librarian Stephen Marlow, for reviewing and maintaining the library. Dads Army were active during the year attending to all the requirements that need attention to ensure that all members can safely enjoy the facilities provided. Doug Marshall has provided leadership to the group which has been going over the last 14 years. MG Motoring the eleven issues of the club magazine, again proved to be an invaluable source of information, with details of forthcoming events as detailed in the calendar, together with all the various reports on the years events interspersed with items of interest and technical tips. Well done Laurie Houghton. Club web site and Facebook presence the club s web site and Facebook page are other avenues of communication with members, keeping you up to date with events and activities. These are growing in use as members become more social media savvy. He will be remembered as a stalwart of the club and a life member. Other Events there were several other events, some of which were not necessarily official MG Car Club of SA events that were attended by our club members. The annual Climb to The Eagle Run, the McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic day, the Bay to Birdwood Rally, the British Classics Tour at Victor Harbor and the Adelaide Motorsport Festival in April. In signing off, the MG Car club, relies on unpaid volunteers, who give their time for the benefit of all members. Without these people we could not operate or provide the level of service and compliance with the statutory requirements that are necessary for the execution of the day to day duties involved in successfully running our club. We should be thankful that in the past 12 months we have been fortunate in having a team of volunteers to do just this. Only events that vare open to all members of the club with no attendance restrictions are eligible for points. The clubs financial year runs from 1st January to 31st December Club Member of the Year An award to recognise the member who participated in the most club activities and events during a calendar year, All financial members of the MG Car Club of SA are eligible to win this award. Club Competition Champion ( performance in an MG) Awarded to the member who obtains the highest number of points in Club Competition at events indicated in the club calendar. Points are awarded for position in class, and also takes into consideration the number of entries in class Ladies Competition Champion Awarded to the lady obtaining the highest number of points Competition Novice Award Awarded to the highest placed novice in the competition. 14

17 Competition Encouragement Award April 2019 Awarded to the member who regularly takes part in events and continues to improve on their performance even if they may not be a class winner. Presidents Award Awarded by the President, to a club member for outstanding contribution to the club throughout the calendar year The Knox Trophy First awarded in 1981 to the most consistent individual performance by a South Australian member at a MG National Meeting in a single car /driver combination. Points are awarded based on position in class, takes into consideration thew number of entries in the class. An outright winner of an event will score the maximum of 6 points + 1 points regardless of the number in class. MGF & Modern MG Register ( MG s of the modern era, MG s after 1995 The Register trophy is awarded to the most active member in their register who attends meetings and nominated events throughout the year. MGA Register Cup (for MGA s and Magnettes) The MGA/Magnette Register trophy is awarded to the most active member in their register who attends meetings and nominated events throughout the year. Irving Cup This is presented through the T & Pre-War Register to the member who drives their T Register vehicle to the most Register meetings and other nominated events throughout the year 15

18 MG Car Club of South Australia PRE-WAR & T - REGISTER From..John Bray, Y 7 March 2019 Rollin to the river, Brian & Kath Golding s register meeting. es, quite a number rolled up at Crafers Park n Ride for the trip to Murray Bridge again this year as is the custom in march when the trip home is not so freezing cold with the hood down. Apologies. Numerous this year for a number of reasons but the enthusiasm was not dampened at all and a good number smoothed their way into Goldy s yard. Those who love to see their name in print include: L Foody,J Tamke, M Stephenson, R Harris, B Forth, J &L Schiller, G & J Glasson, C Whyatt, P Wallace, I Hobbs, P Auld, D Fairbrother, P Lancaster, J Davies, N Proferes, D McNabb, R Bazzica and finally the Phillip Island asylum seekers : A Willington, B Schapel, T Wright, T Driver, A Pearson & A Ruediger. David Fairbrother celebrated his 75 th birthday elsewhere with family, Peter Auld supervised his garage makeover at Torrens Park, TD McNabb in the land of the long white cloud attending the Pre 56 MG rally of sorts. Those were the most interesting apologies really apart from those at Phillip Island which will be dealt with later in this report. The stats: We had 36 signatures in the book excluding Curly s second inclusion, more than 44 were present including guests and the A Series Register folk. 1 Prewar NA, 1 Y Type Saloon, 6 T Types and 3 A Types. In the A s were Sandra & Alan Cardnell, Jasmine & Geoff Goode and Anne & Dean Hosking. Thankyou to Kath & Brian for preparing the garage and providing the after supper platters of fruit, certainly it is a real pleasure to roll up at their home for our meeting under a red sky at dusk. Julie and Brian McIver brought guests Don Moyse and Rosa Stanton, Don a club member presented a turned red gum pen for the raffle that he made, a fine piece of work indeed. Down to business: First was a show n tell item presented by Gordon Brice. A large piece of machinery was displayed for those with enquiring minds and knowledge to determine its use and origin. Where it came from was also a mystery to be solved. Dean Hosking scored the points for a correct assessment (guess), an aircraft carburettor of sorts. Gordon explained that it was off a Beaufort WW2 bomber of which 170,000 were built to fuel the Pratt & Whitney engines on the aircraft. Looks like Reg O Malley will need to come up with something pretty damm interesting to hold his place as king of show and tell at the register in future, hard to top Gordon s effort here. A special attorney has been employed to investigate the external interference into the meeting and the attempted rigging of the raffle from those Ruskies on Phillip Island on Thursday night. Text messaging and face time phone calls were prolific and most annoying to say the least during the serious and important session of general business. I refer to the asylum seekers listed under apologies herein. Retribution will be swift and unjust, watch this space. Ian Buckley s amazing interjections and mumblings were testimony to the influence inflicted by the Phillip Island mob during the meeting, it will be interesting to see how he handles this embarrassment when they return to the coffee club. The other Don: Our very own Don Offler was a welcome attendee at the meeting celebrating the anniversary of the purchase 60 years ago of his much loved and very well known TF. Well done Don, there are not many who can attest to such loyalty to one beautiful car. Really good to see Ronnie Jellet with his TC at his mate s register meeting again, we hope that you can come up with Goldy to meetings this year health willing. Peter Cundy s 1934 NA sports is running sweetly now and makes a nostalgic sight on the freeway not to mention the burble out of the yard and a bit of wheel spin in the gravel. Bronwyn Micklem, a red wine winner left the meeting in a distressed state after Peter in his haste to get away, palmed the bottle onto the garage floor, Goldy has never had a wine spill ever, oil yes but not wine. Bad luck Peter, buy more tickets next meeting maybe she will come good. Heather Bennet, winner at All British Day and on the front cover of the car club magazine was congratulated, not sure who provided the elbow grease polishing it but your sponsors were delighted with the result, maybe share it around its good polish I believe. 20 MG Car Club of South Australia T DON T KNOCK WIRE WHEELS TeChnical TopiC by Bob Schapel here are a couple of common problems associated with wire wheels; The KNOCK noise which comes with worn splines, and the GREASE oozing along the spokes from the hub. Instead of spending big money on new hubs and wheel centres, it is worth-while trying a couple of easy tricks. They worked very well on my Mk 2 Jaguar, my wife s MGA and my road TC. To cure the knock under acceleration and braking, remove the wheel and clean the taper on hub and wheel centre with turps and paint thinner. Leave the splines and knock-off threads/tapers well-greased. Once the taper surface is THOROUGHLY clean and dry, apply Loctite 680 ONLY to the taper surface (marked Loctite in the photo) and its mating surface on the wheel centre. Refit the wheel and tighten the knock-off TIGHTLY. During tightening, rear wheels should be turned backwards against the splines, so that under acceleration there is positive (metal to metal) drive and it is only overrun which relies on the Loctite. Don t be feint-hearted while knocking spinners on tightly. I know that some modern re-pro spinners/knock-offs are so soft that they distort with every blow from a copper hammer. However, good old originals will take the punishment in their stride! Let the Loctite set for a few hours before driving the car. There is no problem with future wheel removal. A gentle kick to the tyre is rarely necessary to break it free, because Loctite is not a glue but an anti-shear substance. The common black, greasy ooze along the spokes (as in the photo) can be eliminated by sealing the inside of the wheel centre. With the wheel off the car, thoroughly clean inside the wheel centre, where the spoke heads locate. Once the area is CLEAN AND DRY, apply silicon sealant (neutral cure) so the spoke heads are sealed to the wheel centre. Push the silicon in with a finger, and put a thin smear over the whole area. Allow the sealant to set, re-grease the splines, and refit the wheel. The sealant should prevent grease from seeping out along the spokes. (Updated from Bob s articles in late 1970s and 1980s) 18

24 MG Car Club of South Australia The Life of Brian s Theory Mk 2 From..Peter Fietz T The first and last owners he article in the March issue of the magazine about Brain Lee s leaping MGA at Flinders Uni was good therapy. Brian might be interested to know that his MGA 1600 Mk 2 is still alive and well. It s been in my custody for the last four years, and it s on the club MGA Register. Unfortunately, it lost its SA rego about ten years ago, but it s still Nurburg White, still with its original engine (thanks to Bob Bazzica another story), and it s still in reasonably tidy condition thanks to previous owners. Bob Bazzica was in fact the second owner, although it was very new when he acquired it. The only thing he could remember about the first owner was that it was so late in MGA production that he had to go to Melbourne to buy it, and that he soon disgraced himself by selling it to buy a Holden. 22 Luck is largely about being in the right place at the right time. On a balmy day late last year I was having a leisurely beer in the front garden of a restaurant over the road from the Birdwood Mill, MGA parked in front. A passing motorcyclist had stopped and was showing more than average interest in the car, especially curious about its early history. I could only parrot off Bob s story about the first owner, but that was all he needed it was just my luck to be talking to Peter O Neill, the first owner. His story is worth retelling. In the early 1960s Peter was a boilermaker, he owned a TC, and lusted after an MGA, but an A was unaffordable at the time. But he was about to have some luck. He went to the races, at Gawler, and placed a compounding bet on four horses in four races. They all came home first past the post and he went home with a fist full of notes. He wasn t going to give that back to the bookies,

25 the next day he set about getting his MGA, brand new. The main problem was the MGA production had finished (the MGB was about to be announced in a month or two) and there were none left in Adelaide. When he inquired, there were still two left on the showroom floor at Lane s Motors in Melbourne. The red one had been sold that afternoon but the white one was one was still available, if he hurried. So in August 1962 the car was registered HPC-650 in Melbourne, driven back to SA, and as far as I am aware spent the rest of its life here. Peter did have the A for only a short time. His wife started a delicatessen business, so he sold his MGA to a dealer opposite Eclipse Motors (somebody might remember what this was) and bought a Holden ute to support her business. The world would be a better place with husbands like that. This MGA is the 111 th 1600 Mark 2 of the 148 built in Australia. As far as I can tell the car has never had a restoration; it has just been used and maintained, items replaced whenever needed. Two honeymoons in its early life probably explains why the seats have had to be re-trimmed. It s always good to have some provenance for our cars, and if anyone has any more historical information I would be more than grateful. I kept my first MGA, a 1500, for thirtythree years, and the plan is to keep this one a similar time. So if anybody is still looking for a late model MGA, keep your eyes on the for sale classifieds in the back of MG Motoring in about Post Script Brian s story evoked a few memories of my teenage years. In the Barossa, one of the roads between Nuriootpa and April 2019 Angaston is crossed by a rail track, at Light Pass. The rail track was about one and a half to two metres above the road which was gently ramped up to the line and down the other side. My Mk 2A Sprite would slide smoothly up one side and down the other. At anything above about 50 mph the wheels would leave the ground. The only sense of being airborne was the engine briefly racing, and the back tyres chirping on the way down no thump, no bounce, smooth as a young lady s cheek. Mates watching from the side of the road were adamant they could see a foot of daylight under the wheels on some of the higher speed runs, but young lads are always inclined to exaggerate. All this was happening around , probably about the same time Brian was conducting his research. Our nonacademic research was limited to observing that one direction worked better than the other; MGAs negotiated the hump smoothly; MGBs not so well (too squishy); and the one attempt by a Morris 1100 bounced so badly that changes of underwear were required. Our research diminished when we matured a bit, and was eventually curtailed when the council rebuilt the road up the level of the rail track. 23

28 MG Car Club of South Australia MSCA Presentation Picnic n Sunday 24 February the Marque O Sports Car Association held its annual Presentation and Picnic at Virgara Wines in Angle Vale. The venue has been used before and is a great location with large grassed areas and lots of shade. Given that it was quite warm this shade was vital. The MSCA member clubs gather and present a display of members cars which is judged by an impartial panel of representatives from the clubs present. Alfa Romeo Owners Club uses this event as a show and shine so their cars are all well polished and lined up for their judges. MX-5 Club had a large gathering of about a dozen cars along with five from Modified Mini, one from Triumph, three from Honda, four from Fiat Lancia and three from Nissan Datsun. Under the expert direction and organization of Sandra Cardnell and Dick Manning the MG Car Club assembled a great display of MGs Through The Ages with a TC (Arthur Ruediger), TD (Faye Edwards), TF (Heather & Chris Bennett), A (Karen & Murray Stephenson), B (Sandra & Alan Cardnell), BGTV8 (Garry Bolt), C (Gary Julian), F (Dick Manning), ZR (Nick Micklem), ZS (Rob Hall) and MG6 (Berry Treffers) in the front row with a BGTV8 (Bev Waters), a B (Anne & Ian Moulds) and a classic TF (Sue & John Davies) in the second row. The display also had a motorsport leaning as cars and the area were adorned with helmets, driving suits, chequered flags and other MG banners. The judges were impressed and MGCC won the display competition. 26 Well done team and a particular thank you to Sandra and Dick who also arranged gazebos for members shelter. Trophies were awarded to the class winners from the 2018 series. To win any trophies a competitor must complete every lap at four out of the five events for the year so it is an achievement to win anything. Dick Manning (MGF), Jason Edwards (Lotus Exige) and John Davies (Lancer EVO 8) each won their respective classes. Although there are many classes available during the year only ten class trophies were awarded. In addition to class winners there are two awards which might be considered the outright awards. These are the Sprint Driver of the year, which recognizes consistency across the year, and the Sprint Champion which recognizes the fastest driver. John Davies won the Sprint Champion award with Jason Edwards as runner up and Dick Manning was Sprint Driver of the year. Congratulations to these three regular competitors who fly the MGCC so well. Well done and well deserved. As a side note, has anybody seen Dick Manning speechless? He wasn t quite speechless but very close to it, and very surprised! Well done to all who came out on the day. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable day but driving old English cars without a roof on a hot day can be a challenge and several of our members achieved that with, I expect, an element of discomfort.

31 April 2019 MGCCSA CONSTITUTION REVIEW A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION IN RELATION TO THE PAYMENT OF ACCOUNTS TO BE CONSIDERED AT A SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE MONTHLY GENERAL MEETING OF THE MG CAR CLUB OF SA INC. ON 9 th APRIL 2019 The current Constitution of the MG Car Club of SA Inc. requires that accounts be paid by Cheques, Bills of Exchange, Withdrawal Forms, Money Orders and Postal Notes, requiring the endorsement of any two signatories, either the President, Secretary or the Treasurer. A large number of invoices received from suppliers include the business s BSB and Account Number to enable electronic transfer of funds from the Club s account to the supplier. On a number of occasions, suppliers have indicated a preference for this method of payment. Monies are transferred immediately and this method avoids the necessity of banking cheques and waiting for clearance days to expire. I propose an amendment to the Constitution by the addition to Section 10 as follows: Section 10(F) Payment of accounts may be made by the Electronic Funds Transfer System utilizing the banking account information provided by the supplier. A payment statement would be produced and attached to the invoice to allow audit checking and identification of payments. The Club s Auditor would be informed regarding this change to the Constitution. This motion must be carried by a three-fourths majority of financial Members present and voting at the meeting. 32 MG Car Club of South Australia PHILLIP ISLAND HISTORICS From...Terry Wright T his year s event was held on the 8th, 9th and tenth of March, and a party of six club members drove from Adelaide, departing on the 7th. All were members of the T Register at the time of their departure, but their current membership status is under a cloud due to some vague dispute with the Boss of the Register who alleges their involvement in a conspiracy to disrupt the proceedings of his Register Meeting held on 7th March at Murray Bridge. The Boss version of the dispute is mentioned briefly in his report found elsewhere in this journal, but all allegations are denied by the touring party which was dining at the Isola de Capri in Cowes at the time. (Some tourists have conceded privately that they may have operated their mobile phones during the course of a very pleasant meal.) The group travelled under the auspices of the Schapelli Racing team, although Bob Schapel did not enter as a competitor this year. A base was established in the pit area, with gazebo, chairs and table, to provide a rest and meeting point during the event, and to allow for a quiet drink and chat with nearby competitors after the close of racing each day. Members Wayne and Geraldine Hough also visited the island and dined with the group on a couple of occasions. A feature of the Phillip Island Classic is the ability of all people attending to access the pits and enjoy the atmosphere as well as close-up inspection of the entered cars. As always, there was an outstanding range of cars (some from overseas) competing, as well as club displays in the outer area. Overseas cars included an AC Cobra, light-weight E Type Jaguar and a Cooper Monaco. The racing was well-organised and vigorous, and conducted in fine weather conditions. A sizable number of MGs was racing, including TCs, MGBs and Midgets, although there were none from South Australia. The next event on the historic racing calendar is at Mallala in April, followed by Winton (Benalla, Victoria) in May. 30

Graham Loader and Gary Chapman From : Graham Loader Thursday 14 th February 2019 n a lovely sunny mid 20 degree day O 27 members met at Arkaba Hotel for coffee and chat. The hotel had set us up in a room with tables and chairs allowing us to sit down and relax instead of milling around the bar. Being Valentine s Day some ladies were discussing the lovely gifts their husbands had given them but they did appear to be a minority. It was nice to have Trevor & Helen Praite join us again and it was obviously a dry day because Rodger Polkinghorne came in the MGB. Because of the possibility of very hot weather and the dry conditions of the hills, the route selected bypassed any tight roads through scrubby areas and kept to the main roads. The route being over 65kms through Stirling, Mylor, Meadows, Kangarilla, Clarendon, Happy Valley to Flagstaff Hotel at Darlington where we were joined by another 7 members for lunch. It was noticeable that the roads were in need of repair with one member stopping near Clarendon because he thought the roughness was a loose wheel. 9 MG s attended, being A s, B s,f,1100 & ZR. Graham Loader brought the Mustang out for another run, the remainder of cars being later model plastics. Most of us had the $20 three course Senior s meal which included coffee. Members appeared to enjoy the run and meal. After coffee and chats we set off on our run beginning with 8 kms up the freeway to get the cars warmed up. Through Verdun, Lenswood, Lobethal and Gumeracha we enjoyed the day and a pleasant cruise to Tea Tree Gully. At the Gully Hotel we were met by Neville & Marjorie Pridgeon and Ian & Di Williamson. As usual we were well looked after by The Gully staff and I think everyone had the complimentary desert. 36 MG Car Club of South Australia MGC NEWS MGC conversations by Richard Mixture, April 2019 Hello again, it s Richard here with a story about body shell problems. When MG decided to do away with a steel chassis when they introduced the MGB, I often wondered what stopped the body folding in half. You know, just like some of those funny bikes that fold in half to fit into your boot. Although you d need a rather large boot to fit an MGB in. Back three decades ago Practical Classics published an interesting story about body shells. Now remember girls and boys, MGC body shells may be a little different from MGBs, but the problems are still the same. The body sills and under wing areas are especially prone to disintegration on older MGs. Starting at the front of the car, check around the head lights for evidence of hasty filler repairs and, from below the vehicle, check how much mud has been allowed to collect in the vicinity of the lamp units. Moving further back, but still beneath the wing, reach up to the upper rear section of the wing and examine by hand and by eye the state of the 'turret' strengthening section. This forms a horizontal ledge on which mud, salt and water can collect. When the ledge rusts though, road debris and moisture work their way backwards, gradually eating through the inner wing, bulkhead, 'A' post and sill areas. Tell-tail bubbles of rust in the outer panels surrounding the affected areas can give the game away. Fortunately, the front wings unbolt to allow access to rusted sections beneath them and repair sections are available. The sills especially on roadsters are vital to the structure of the car and 34 should extend beneath both front and rear wings. If you are looking at a car to which 'cover' outer sills have been fitted, as evidenced by join lines under each end of the doors, take care! It is likely that rust still exists beneath the cover panels and behind the lower edges of the front and rear wings. If the inner and outer sections of the sills are rotten (they usually rust in unison), it is best to replace all the sill components together. This is an involved job, especially on a DIY basis, so it may be preferable to leave it to the experts. To start with, and before cutting away any rusty metal, the bodyshell should be braced by bolting a temporary strengthening bar between the 'A' post area and the forward section of the rear bodywork, just inside the top of the rear wing. It is also essential to tackle just one side of the car at a time or it may fold up in the middle! Normally the front wings will still need to be removed for attention to the inner wing areas; it is best to remove the wings anyway to give access to the front ends of the sills. With the windscreen and relevant front wing unbolted and removed, the bottom of the rear wing should be chiselled away (leaving enough metal for a repair patch to be attached!). The rotten metal in the sill area can then be cut away. This can be done using a hammer and bolster, cutting as far back as the floor panel (repairs to or replacements of floor sections are carried out at the same time). The lower end of the 'A' post is now free to move and should be left unattached while the new 'floor to door step (inner)

37 panel is welded to the car at the rear end. The lower chassis ('castle') rail can then be attached, forming a shelf for the floor pan. The chassis section holding the jacking point, the jacking point itself and its support brace should then be welded into position and the floor seam-welded to the lower chassis rail. The vertical inner sill panel is then attached, after which the welds can be cleaned up with an angle grinder and the inner surfaces of the panels treated to an anti-rust paint before being finally 'boxed in' by the outer sill panel. Before trial-fitting the outer sill, the door should be re-hung so that door fit and gap widths around it can be gauged accurately. Next the outer sill is attached with self-tapping screws or selfgrip wrenches and the door lined up so that the body swage lines meet neatly April 2019 with the door aperture gaps equal all round (the 'A' post and the sill panel can be moved to achieve this). When all is well, the 'A' post and outer sill can be welded into position. Well, all I can say is that I m glad my C came from the US of A and not the UK. Although sunny California is certainly better than New York. Lucky most US imports came from the west coast. 38 MG Car Club of South Australia LIBRARY NEWS From..Stephen Marlow ummer has been a pretty quiet time S in the library but there are a couple of things to keep member up to date on. As promised at Club monthly meetings, I ve got a list of people who have had books on loan for what seems like a pretty long time (i.e., over a year), and I m phoning them to politely ask them to return their reads so they can be shared by all! By the time you read this I hope to have collected all the old magazines from the front room and disposed of them in an environmentally friendly way. Those of you have been following this will remember that these are NOT MGCCSA magazines, they re old copies of the various publications we receive from other clubs which have been sitting around unread for a long time. Limited space has dictated that they have to go. Please don t call me Marie Kondo!! We have a new book just received which will be of particular interest to the A fraternity. It s The MGA - First of a New Line" by J P Williams. We already have a couple of John Williams books and I m assured this will be a worthy and popular addition. I had a bit of trouble sourcing the book but managed to locate it via John Cronshaw Motoring Books. John was a studio cameraman and then studio director at NWS 9 back in the good old days when Curley was an engineer there and I worked in the newsroom. I caught up with John at the All British Day for the first time in over 40 years and I m delighted his home-based business was able to assist me in finding this book. 39 s you all know I A have been away on holidays in Bangkok Thailand and am proud to report there are MG s everywhere with over 20 dealers in Bangkok area alone. Sales of MG cars has them rated at the 4 th best selling brand of car here in The most popular seems to be the MG3, yellow with black roof and the GS smart SUV, mostly red or white. Sad to say no MG6, but they have an MG5, very similar in appearance to the MG6, supporting a 1.5 litre petrol motor available also as a turbo option. I gather there is a MG5 owners club with approximately 2,500 members. Unfortunately I believe these cars are not coming to Australia as we have the MG6 as their replacement. The highlight of my trip was not seeing all these MG s having visited Bridge On The River Kwai and Hellfire Pass where 10,601 Australians perished during WW2. There is a magnificent centre maintained and supported by the Australian Government at Hellfire Pass, being roughly 200km from Bangkok. Lest not we forget them this Anzac Day.
