Calls to Telstra, Bigpond and Microsoft have been to no avail!!!!! By the way you can t talk to a Telstra employee in Australia. At least I retained my original fixed line phone number. 11 9 April 2018 As in past years I would like to take this opportunity to thank all committee members and appointees for their contribution over the past 12 months. To all the other volunteers who have freely given of their time to promote the activities of our club during the year, I thank you also on behalf of the executive committee and members. 13 April 2018 Dads Army were active during the year attending to all the requirements that need attention to ensure that all members can safely enjoy the facilities provided. MG Motoring the eleven issues of the club magazine, that members received during the year, again proved to be an invaluable source of information, with details of forthcoming events as detailed in the calendar, together with all the various reports on the years events interspersed with items of interest and technical tips. Life Membership was granted to Tim Edmonds during 2017 bringing our Life Member list to a total of nine during the 61 years of the club s formation. Vale during the year it was with sadness that we lost a founding member, Peter Ivey, and another long standing member Alan Griffin. Awards for 2017 congratulations to the award winners for 2017 Club Member of The Year Arthur Ruediger Club Competition Champion of The Year Rob Hall Womans Competition Champion of The Year Karen Stephenson Competition Novice of The Year Nick Micklem Competition Encouragement Award Tony Freckelton Presidents Award, for outstanding contribution to the club Arthur Ruedger The Knox Trophy Rob Hall The Irving Cup Bob Schapel The MG A / Magnette Trophy Nick Micklem The MGF / Z / ZT Hick Trophy no award for 2017 Other Events there were several other events, some of which were not necessarily official MG Car Club of SA events that were attended by our club members. Notable among these were, All British Day, with a display of 53 MGs, the annual Climb to The Eagle Run. the Goodwood Revival, the McLaren Vale Vintage & Classic day, the Bay to Birdwood Rally, the British Classics Tour at Victor Harbor and the Adelaide Motorsport Festival in April. In October 5 of our members took part in the Vintage Collingrove Weekend, which consists of social activities, a tour through the Barossa Valley on Saturday, and a hill climb on Sunday, topped off with a farewell dinner Sunday night. This popular event attracts entrants from interstate.. In conclusion I remind you that clubs like the MG Car club, rely almost solely on unpaid volunteers, who give their time for the benefit of all members. Without volunteers we could not operate or provide the level of service and compliance with the statutory requirements that are necessary for the execution of the day to day duties involved in successfully running our club. We should be thankful that in the past 12 months we have been fortunate in having a team of volunteers to do just this. On behalf of all club members I sincerely thank all of these people, regardless of the level of their contribution during the year. Arthur Ruediger Secretary 13th March

T MG Car Club of South Australia MID WEEK LUNCH RUN NEWS From..Diane Holmes Thursday 8 March, his was a first time visit for our group to this historic pub tucked away in the leafy suburb of Maylands. Yet another hot day for the run this month so only two MGs turned up for the drive down Greenhill Road Garry & Jenice Chapman in their MGF & Leigh in his beautiful white TD. Several of our members were familiar with the history of the Maylands Hotel and I am pleased we waited until now for our visit as about 18 months ago it was very tastefully restored by the present hotels group. A few of us wandered around the various rooms, which offered a look back to the past & the quality of the original building. The wall just inside the entrance from the car park & facing the bar had an interesting collection of framed photos of the hotel during the1880 s. Laurie Houghton & Jo were back again after moving house & Sandy & Trevor came to the morning tea to catch up after their recent holidays and also good to see Geoff & Jas were there for the lunch.. Next mid week lunch run will be on 12 April 2018 to the Montagna Café at Blackwood meeting at the Crafers Hotel at 10.30am & departing 11.30am. If you would like to come please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes djdrholmes@gmail.com or phone

MG Car Club of South Australia BREAKFAST RUN REPORT From..Steve Spong, Breakfast Run to Mitcham 25 February 2018 You could tell the seasons were changing, for despite it still being February the hills were cool and damp and the plains overcast but dry, and we experienced a bit of both as we drove via the coast and the hills on our route to Mitcham. The Mitcham Memorial Reserve is a lovely spot and obviously others thought so too, for upon arrival we were met by a contingent of the Italian Car Club, The Studebaker Car Club plus a 2nd birthday party. However there was room for all people and cars. So thanks to all who came and we look forward to David McNabb's return and some better photos than mine, not sure what went wrong. 22 MG Car Club of South Australia MGC NEWS MGC conversations with Richard Mixture, April 2018 H Fuel for the Fire ello again, it s Richard here with a remapping story. Remapping? I always thought that remapping was when you go into the newsagent and buy the latest Gregory s street directory. But it s got something to do with computers evidently. Russell would know all about it...err... that is if he s not out-ofdate already after six months of retirement. How many MGCs out there have computer, measuring all sorts of things and then adjusting the fuel, air and timing. I d say the number is a round one and equal to the number of MGs made by Austin. Re-graphing is the term or changing the advance curve as I was told many years ago. Now, the spark plug in each cylinder has to light up at the right time to send the piston back down the bore and turn the crank etc, all the way to the back wheels, no matter what speed the crank is turning. So how do modern fuels, namely unleaded fuels, work in our old cars? Once upon a time petrol was petrol and then some smart spark found that increasing compression ratios increased performance but that lead to pre-ignition or knocking or pinging. Petrol companies discovered that if they add lead to the fuel mix it not only reduce pinging by increasing the octane rating but also reduced the wear of the valves and their seats. In fact, when Curly was a lad, ESSO found that tetra-ethyl lead (TEL) worked wonderfully well and introduced it to their fuel in TEL worked so well it became an industry norm. When TEL is burnt it forms a fine sus- 20 pension of lead salts that is largely lead bromide which was the white deposits on the inside of your exhaust in the old days. This cloud of particles slows the flame front down in the combustion chamber, (this doesn t happen with unleaded fuel). So jump forward into the 1960s and some health professionals found that people who lived on busy roads were suffering from lead poisoning. Now I wonder where that came from? It was well known that petrol was not particularly nice stuff, think fire, and when I was a youngster washing up parts in petrol was the norm, you just sloshed it all about. While it wasn t a good idea then, it s worse now with modern fuels containing benzene which is a known carcinogen. Authorities started reducing lead in fuel by the mid 1970s in the USA and it was banned in Australia in So the point of all this pre-waffle is that our old lumps of Best British Cast Iron as Bruce calls it, were designed for leaded fuels which are unavailable these days. So before you start brewing your own fuels try retarding your ignition timing a little and winding your jets down a little to make a slightly rich mixture when compared to the settings written in the manual! I have played around with my SUs but could never get the old cast iron lump to run sweetly throughout the rev range. I spent money and had a well known dyno-tune business arrive at nothing better than what I had achieved. In fact I had to re-tune the mixture because living in the Adelaide Hills I used higher revs more often than I did fluffing around in the city.

Of course that nice old Queenslander, you know who I mean, Bruce, says, The C1W needles supplied by Downton were too weak in our climate and I ended up using ST needles. SQ were too rick down low and no good at full throttle. The cylinder head specialist who converted my head for unleaded fuel advised that Weslake heads (Mini, MGB & MGC) do NOT like to run lean. If it were me I would start with ST needles. Also, I d hope that all current owners have had their cast iron heads modified with hardened valve seats to cope with the higher temperatures of unleaded fuel. And remember, Australia has the lowest quality petrol of the 35 countries in the OECD, below Mexico, Turkey and Estonia (according to the Sydney Morn- April 2018 ing Herald back in 2016) so use 95 or 98RON octane fuels in the old girl, she d love it. So before you start playing with benzene, paraffins, aromatics, alcohols, oxygenates and TEL sit back in your old wingback and have a good read of the SU Needle Profile Chart handbook. Automnal Run Now MGCers et al, it's about time to go on another MGC run, put Saturday 5 th May in your diary and we'll meet at 1.30pm at Beaumont Road, Adelaide, just off of Greenhill Road. Remember ladies and gentlemen keep em tuned, Rich 21

MG Car Club of South Australia T PRE-WAR & T REGISTER From..John Bray. Photos by Register meeting 1 March 2018 The Rush to Murray Bridge Goldfield. he rush was certainly on from those assembled at Crafers Park N Ride to Brian & Kath Golding s digs at Murray Bridge again this year. We were blessed with perfect weather and received a blessing at the start from the sari clad Hari Krishna s who took an avid interest in the cars and Russell Garth especially. He really wanted a seat in the TF Russ, pity you could have been the first Uber TF in Adelaide, but then again the sari would have got messed up in the handbrake, he looked a bit suss Russ! It really was a great start, some slower cars flagged off early but were never overtaken driven to the max in true MG spirit, one never made it for reasons that will be explained later. Thanks again to Brian & Kath again this year, it has become an annual pilgrimage and we appreciate the hospitality sincerely. At long last the 22 sunset met Goldy s expectations that was just as well as he has been promising us for the last two years that it would be good signed in, 13 T register cars. Apologies. There were a few, Doc Whyatt, Kenny Fisher, Peter Wallace, Geoff Glasson, John Tamke, Stan Sheppard, Robin Gibbs, Forthy, Joy & David Pearson, Ronnie Jellet (unwell) Chris & Heather Bennett, Bob & Shelly Bazzica & two notables Peter Cundy & David TD Mc Nabb. It is worth noting that the last two had interesting excuses. Peter Cundy was in the jungles of Sri Lanka looking for 1930 s MG Parts, pity the Japanese never left any behind in McNabb of course in keeping with the Gold Rush night, was luxuriating in Gold Class at Marion Cinema s, Kerry having corralled him on a Register night to the movies, well that is his chances gone in the Irving Cup this year for sure. Chris & Heather Bennett busy preparing the caravan for towing by the TF to Tasmania, Nat Meet.

April 2018 The legend Laurie Foody = DNF, a bit more coming up on that, read on. New member, David Herbert. The squadron welcomed David in his recently rebuilt and restored MG TC David resides in Mt Gambier, the car formerly owned by Dean Hosking was rebuilt by Andrew Willington from the chassis up and it is a most exceptional job, Ray Finch did the bodywork again it is an excellent and attractive result, congratulations both of you. Welcome David, we hope to see more of you in the future with the TC out and about. It is worth noting that the TC formerly owned by David Fairbrother won it s class and was third overall at the Victorian MG CC Concurs at Yarra Glen that weekend, this car was rebuilt under Andrew s charge in the restoration. A great result and it did fetch an amazing price at sale woo hoo! General Business. Well, there was some however the early arrival of the Dominos Pizza lass caused a decided drop in concentration by some members Reg O Malley lept to his feet yes he s got a few, price negotiable. The MG CCSA annual general meeting is on Tuesday 13 March at the monthly meeting, members of the register asked to attend if possible. Mike Greenwood reported that Queensland s Peter Kerr has had an accident falling and is not in a good way, the magazine that he puts out may be delayed. A bit more on Mike Greenwood below. Anthony Pearson reported on the passing of member Gordon Koch in the Barossa who owned a very nice MG TC previously owned by Anthony way back, family will put it up for sale. Lovely condition, 19 inch wheels, purchased through Shannon s Auctions some years ago. Really Big News. Ian Buckley is now the proud owner of the J2, purchased from Bob Bazzica who completed the restoration after the passing of John Scott (Scotty) some years ago. Buckles is a most fitting owner, a man who is passionate about MG s and our club, congratulations it is wonderful that the car remains here in SA amongst our so I will be brief. Andrew Willington about to embark on another project was looking for a TF engine, Woseley 4/44, or XPAG maybe, will pay appropriately, Prewar & Register members. I am de- 23

MG Car Club of South Australia liberately greasing him up as I think that his next Register night will be amazing. Well done Buckles!!! The Legend that is Laurie Foody. (with apologies to Johnny Crash ) Laurie s TD went roaring off as we got underway Up on the road he rested as he went along his way When all at once a mighty roar of MG s he saw Plowing through the smoky skies And up the freeway draw Yippe-i-oh Yippe-i-yay Ghost drivers in the sky! (Ah yes he s gone the wrong way if you haven t worked it out, not seen again that night) Legend #2, Mike Greenwood attempted to realign Goldy s gate post on leaving, although unsuccessful it did leave an unpleasant bruise on the MG6 which is destined for concurs in TAS. Legend #3, Simon Ewart who ran as sweeper on the way up in the TC although a few of us were keeping an eye on the yellow glow of his headlights several K s back. Well done Simon. Legend # 4, Brian Golding doing his show n tell with a relic from his grandfather s cellar. Just a bit of old black rubber tubing in a big glass jar. Well you can stick that one up your know what Brian! I have run out of legends but there are those who are not at all well currently, Don Offler, Ronnie Jellet and Shelly Bazzica took a dive to the tiles recently and cut herself up somewhat, on the mend we hear. Hope that she s firing on all four for the May Register meeting at their place. The legends from Goolwa were up, great to see the progress by The Ghost who Walks on the SA. The wrap. Talk about ghost drivers in the sky, the trip home was the usual dash and burn event. Great to be in Dean s hot B and to be overtaking the T s on the freeway. David Mc Naughton was not seen though, he is mightily pleased with the LED candles on the B, I am told that he enjoyed the drive and was not overtaken at all, made it home by curfew to boot. Meetings to come. April 5 Hawthorndene, David & Joy Pearson, May 3 West Beach, Bob & Shelley Bazzica. I have offers from Ken Fisher, Thane Martin, Leigh Ritcher, Peter & Browyn Miclem, Mauric & Steph Linehan, Donald Walks Walker, watch this space. Thankyou for coming down to the Bridge and making the night a memorable one, best of luck for those who are representing us at the Easter National Meeting in Tasmania, we will drink to Haw- their success at Pearson s thorndene. Cheers & Safety Farts John Bray BOTR 24

MG Car Club of South Australia BAZZICAS FOLLY The Story of KN 0386 first registered in 27/9/1935 By... Bob Bazzica nce upon a time there was a guy by O the name of Rob Dunsterville who was an Australian MG friend living in England, who was finding MG Sfor another famous Australian Phil Redhead. It came to pass that 2 cars were found in a barn both K types. They were sent to Australia and sold Immediately, the KN went to a Mr Hocking of Melbourne, who then ordered a lot of spares for the project, but he eventually realised the job was too much, and put it on the market. Enter Robert Bazzica a would be pre-war owner, who had previously been to England to buy a P type MG, but found that by Australian standards everything was rusty junk, so came home empty handed. A quick check of KN s said that it was the best chassis ever made, with the biggest engine available. This sounded just what I needed, being a bit of a racer in my time. Then I saw a photo of Cecil Kimber s own special bodied KN by Corsica. As I worked on the car and stripped out the chassis, I realized that this car had been in continuous service, and was bolt perfect. In other words all the bolts were in their original holes, and not been changed, and as originality was the flavour of the year. I started the usual pulling out all the bolts cleaning them and putting the back in the original holes. This got very time consuming, and the project died a natural death for some years to come. Over the next 30 years work was done bit by bit, and most people who saw the pro- 26

April 2018 ject thought it would be a deceased estate car! Over the years I had many ideas of what to do, but working in my little dark garage did not inspire and little was done. One of the highlights during this period was I was offered the body of Peter Briggs K3 in Perth, for me to build a replica of a K3. This was a great offer, but I still wanted to build a Corsica bodied look- a- like Kimbers JB3717. There are not many photos of Kimbers car existing, so I asked Jean Kimber Cook for more photos, she said she would find some, but this never happened, so using the one good photo I had I continued to build the car. The original Kimber car was sold, and a few years later it was upgraded with a revamped rear end, and guards filled in with side panels like the SA, with windup windows and forward opening doors. I liked the forward opening doors, so I decided to go that way, rather than the rear opening doors as per Kimbers original car. As KN saloons are very rare, I have built the body without chopping up the original frames and reworked much along the original lines. This idea was to enable the original body to be placed on top, and rebuilt to the 4 door saloon if somebody wanted to! I have kept the original turret in one piece, and the 4 doors in good order. In April 2017 I decided to finish the project, and in Dec 2017 it was complete, wired, running car. Currently it is un- supercharged, I will get it sorted and tuned, and then fit a SC14 Toyota blower. The reason for the big push to finally finish this car was that I had purchased a TD Arnolt coupe, a lovely car, but presently very rusty. Looking at the time involved, I have to live to 103 years old to finish all my projects. Approximate status of KN S in the world are as follows 27 Total production of KN s was. 201 units Original saloon bodied cars now is 6 left in existence 4 seat KN tourers by University Motors. 7 left in existence 4 seat tourer Kimber car. 1 left 4 Seat tourer Bazzica s folly look a like. 1 in existence. The car will hopefully be on display at the Tasmanian National Meeting this Easter. Bazz

April 2018 Motorkhana Round 1 18 February n Sunday 18 February a small O band of motorkhana enthusiasts gathered at the Mallala skidpan for round 1 of the SA Motorkhana Series. Due to some changes to rules and costings for motorkhanas the CAMS Auto Test Panel had decided to make the 2018 series a state championship so there were a few regulation subtleties which had to be dealt with to get the day under way. MGCCSA was running the event so we had a lot to learn very quickly. A small team was on hand to get set up including members of the Panel and other clubs but thanks to Dave, Tim, Alan Cardnell, Bev Waters, Peter Coulson, Jason and Faye Edwards and Murray for the setup. Pack was further aided by the rest of the Edwards clan, Michelle, Tyler and Aiden. Great work. The field of twenty three drivers included four MGCCSA members and most notably Faye Edwards having her debut run in the TD prior to Easter. Faye did a great job all day taking out only one flag and having a great time. After the first two runs the clouds delivered a gentle shower which persisted for the remainder of the day making for slippery conditions. The series may be called a State Championship but is no different to what we have run before. It s the same people doing the same tests and having fun at the same price. Come and have a go. A great time was had by all and we look forward to the next round at Mallala on 29 April. 29 MSCA Super Sprint Round On Sunday 11 March, Round 1 of the 2018 MSCA Super Sprint series was run at Mallala. A field of eighty nine sprinters lined up for the day with nine MGCC members among them. MGCC members entered six MGs, an MGB V8, a ZR, a TC, an MGB GTV8 and two MGFs. The other cars were a Lancer EVO8, Lotus Exige and Hyundai Excel. A further eight MGCC members were involved in running the event with Berry as the starter, Bev in timing, Tim scrutineering and five in the flaggy bunker helping to make the event flow. It was great to see new member John Parmiter bring out his MGF for a run and despite the odd spin he had a good time. It is understood he has done a lap or two at Mallala before, have raced Alan Cardnell back in the day. Nick Micklem set out with a new set of tyres for the weekend and was quickly onto his previous best but slowed down once he started to push. Garry Bolt s V8 didn t want to rev but despite pulling nothing over 4,500RPM he did get under 1 minute 30 seconds. There was a general complaint of the track being slippery, particularly after a Torana applied dust settling oil to the surface. The day was mild and very pleasant to be sitting around watching or flagging but apparently quite warm in the cars. The Manning - Stephenson rivalry continued with Dick and Scott battling for times. Unfortunately the Excel was off the pace on the day but needs to be

MG Car Club of South Australia right for the Excel support race at Bathurst Six Hour at Easter. Thanks to the officials, drivers and supporters who came out for a great day. It was an entertaining day with great competition and all finished well in time for the curfew. Get your entries in early on CAMS event entry system as this event will fill quickly. Note this is one week after Easter, and the Nat Meet, so it will be a busy start to the month. Sunday 15 April Shannons Nationals Show & Shine MGCCSA is putting on a display of twenty five MGs at the Shannons Nationals at The Bend Motorsport Park. This will be a three day motorsport festival so worth a trip to have a look at the new facility, watch some great motorsport and support your club members on the Sunday. Sunday 29 April SA Motorkhana Championship Round 3, Mallala Round 3 of the SA Motorkhana Championship Series will be held at Mallala 30 skidpan on 29 April. Come and have a go or at least support your club members who are competing. There is a Come & Try component to these events so you can enter and buy a licence on the day and/or bring along a family member, child or grandchild, to try a motorkhana. You might work out why we enjoy it so much! Sunday 6 May The Peter Hall Six Hour Regularity, Mallala This is the ultimate team event for motorsport. We need drivers and helpers to make the team run smoothly so if you can assist with driving, timing, sash change or anything else please let me know your availability and we can put you to work. Otherwise, just come out to watch some good fun motorsport with a wide variety of vehicles attempting to keep the sash moving for six hours and maintaining a steady speed. Sunday 20 May SA Motorkhana Championship Round 4, Mallala Round 4 motorkhana on 20 May is halfway through the series so come and cheer or have a go. Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June MG Interclub Challenge The MG interstate Club Challenge over the Queen s Birthday weekend will include a Hillclimb at Collingrove on Saturday 9 June and a Super Sprint at The Bend on Sunday 10 June. Planning is well under way and we should have the Supp Regs soon. Expressions of Interest have started coming in from interstate so if you plan on coming please let us know and start planning your accommodation. There will be an informal dinner gathering on the Saturday night at Murray Bridge and the presentation dinner on the Sunday night in Murray Bridge. We will also require a number of officials on the Sunday so if you would like to
