I don t believe I should be obliged to purchase a newspaper to avail myself of such rules or any changes that are effected from time to time. Do you know how many road rules there are? The South Australia version of the Australian Road Rules, Road traffic Act Version runs to 331 pages and includes 353 Rules most of which have an offence provision. ( courtesy of Mr Google ) So who is going to memorise all of these? There is no report from our President this month as Allan and Raelene are holidaying in South Africa Printed by Kwik Kopy Unley. 8 MG Car Club of South Australia PRE-WAR & T REGISTER From...John Bray 1 September 2016 Bob and Shelly Bazzica, West Beach IT S THE ANTIQUE ROAD SHOW T hankyou Bob & Shelly for providing the venue and superb cuisine for the Register night at their home. Bob s amazing collection of antiquities provided plenty of interest after soaking up his collection of cars in the garage and workshop which is by the way, amazingly cleaned up complete with a new workshop bench complete with drawers given to him by Shelly out of sheer frustration I was told. 6 Members were surely impressed at the progress on the KN MG since we saw it last time in October 2014, just have a peek at the MGCC SA website, plenty of good photos from Terry Wright and David Mc Nabb there amongst the other antique gentlemen in the frames. Apologies: A vital part of the meeting where names are named and fame abounds for those who are listed into the register reports as being absent with amazing and plausible excuses. Gordon Brice: knee replacement, Peter Auld : Goodwood Revival UK, John Neilson : funeral, Peter Cundy : Queensland, Ronnie Jellett : Bus pickup in Murray Bridge, Reg O Malley : AWOL, Anthony Pearson : UK Road Show, busted laptop. John Tamke : ( very late apology) Missed , Late magazine delivery. Mike Lyons : unwell. 36 members signed in, 9 register vehicles including Bob s cars. General Business: Business arising from members was minimal at this meeting, so I will be brief. McNabb reported on participation by register vehicles on the Kimber Run, 6 TD s, 1 TF, 1 YA, 1 TC he says, nothing can be verified but TD s are leading the charge these days. Bev & Stephen Jones (NSW) are looking for TC 9928, last seen in Unique Cars 2006 in SA somewhere. We are hoping that either Stan or Reg might have some data on the car.

9 Geraldine Hough outlined details for the Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb event coming soon, check the website and the magazine, it s on Sunday 2 October, Arthur is camping out in his Scout tent. Everyone should send Anthony Pearson an while he is away, very limited data capacity and a busted laptop screen he has, so tight is the boy when he goes away. Paul Dallwitz ( the doctor) is looking for a TF to buy, keep an eye out for him. Geoff Brown , is looking for a Y Type Sedan to buy, keep the other eye out for him also, Bob Schapel is a grandfather again, snap Bob me too! Artfur reports that his 19 inch wheels are extremely good, thank goodness. (Advertisement) Goldy s red bowtie, very dapper indeed, check it out on the website. (attention seeker? ) 7 October 2016 Terry Wright has a new cap complete with MG logo this time, makes a change from HK cricket Terry. David Fairbrother is an apology for the next meeting, thanks David. Ground breaking news: Goldy reported that somewhere around Mannum there is a Barn Find just waiting to be discovered by tomb robbers. The goss is that it is a TC, family owned maybe. This will be a great story when it breaks, good luck prospectors! Trevor Driver broke the drought of not ever winning a prize in the raffle, he immediately collected his prize which unfortunately was not a bottle of the Old Speckled Hen beer from Abingdon, and immediately palmed it off to Chris Kinney who will blacken his tyres with glee. Can t please them all folks! Next meeting: Thursday 6 October We will be hosted by Peter and Bronwyn Micklem at 57 Yantaringa Road Paechtown near Hahndorf. Meet at the Crafers Hotel carpark no later than 6:30pm to leave for Hahndorf by 6:45pm as follows. Drive into Hahndorf off freeway exit, turn right into Pine Ave just after pedestrian lights in the main street, proceed west under the freeway on Echunga Rd, turn left into Paechtown Rd approx. 2 K to Yantaringa Rd on right, then 1 k to number 57.

12 MG Car Club of South Australia BREAKFAST RUN NEWS From..Steve Spong Breakfast Run to Salisbury Park 28 August 2016 W e were again lucky with the weather for our run to Salisbury Park with most of the rooves soon being lowered. Peter & Bronwyn Micklem had some troubles with their TD at the start, but after a resetting of the points they were soon off with the rest of us for an exhilarating run along Gorge Road to Kersbrook and then via One Tree Hill and back down into the suburbs. Luckily we met with very little traffic or bikes on the drive although there are always one or two nutters out there speeding or overtaking in stupid locations. So thanks to all of those who came and who have supported these runs over the winter period. We therefore look forward to seeing a big turn out for the first Spring run which will be down to the Fleurieu on the first Sunday in October, due to the bay to Birdwood in September. Attendees.. 16 MG Car Club of South Australia MGC NEWS MGC merblings from Richard Mixture, October 2016 H C is for Cooling ello, yes it s me again. Well I received a letter passed on to me via that nice young Register Coordinator, Ian Hobbs. Now, Lynton has owned his MGC for a couple of years now and was checking his cooling system and found a few problems. He says I have just finished working through the process of checking the coolant gallery behind the coolant pump in the hope to elevate high engine operating temperature. Turns out someone had been there before me. Too much silicon sealant and the gallery was all good. I was cleaning parts and found the fan was previously been install backwards. From the look of the paint it was like that from new. I had the radiator flow tested. 20% blocked and hence not an issue. Reassembled with the fan on the correct way and the air draw is significantly high. Road tested with temp gauge fixed on 85. While only cool weather today my car would usually run hotter than 85. It never ceases to amaze me how people are always wanting to reinvent the Jelly Bean! But I guess as MG owners we are always tinkering about with all sort of things we know nothing about, until after we ve stuffed it up or in fact we are fixing someone else s creative endeavour some time after we stuffed up previously and 14 have remembered we stuffed it up and remember how to fix it. When experiencing overheating problems the first thing many owners do is get the radiator checked but there are several things to do before you take it out of the car. One of my learnings many decades ago was from watching that would-be sleuth, agent RRB 007, attend to an overheating MGC GT. The first thing he did was check the ignition timing and then the carby mixture. Retarded timing will contribute to overheating, as does a lean mixture. The next thing to do is check the water pump. Make sure it is not leaking and that the correct size pulley is on the front. If the pulley is incorrect then the coolant can be circulating too fast or too slow which can cause overheating. I ll mention the water pump again a bit further down. Getting air to flow through the radiator is critical in an MGC and in fact in most cars these days. The MGC has a larger radiator than an MGB and for very good reason. There are a few gaps around the B radiator and these are often filled in with foam rubber where owners are forcing the more air to go through the radiator and not around it. The MGC on the other hand came from Abingdon with no gaps of any size. Have a look at the panel and rubber seal placed above the radiator that follows the profile of the bonnet for instance. The shroud around the fan also helps pull air more efficiently through the radiator

17 so it s important to keep these factory components. Lower octane rated fuel can have some effect on overheating. With increased octane fuel the ignition can be advanced a little without preignition. Finding the correct timing can help reduce overheating. If the radiator is taken out and checked for blockages as often occurs with old cars take the water pump off and check it for a wobbly bearing. If it is wobbly it is probably leaking so look for any signs of leaking coolant. One critical thing to check on an MGC is the water gallery in the block which is behind the water pump. When these blocks were cast the sand core for the water gallery often does not meet the core for the space behind the water pump. Hence October 2016 a factory worker would knock a hole to allow coolant to flow from one space to the next. Sometimes this hole was large but if it is small overheating problems occur particularly in warmer climates.. err.. that s warmer than the motherland of course. My block was about 25% blocked so I filed this hole larger to allow better flow of coolant. A dremel would have made the job a lot easier. And always remember to check the coolant level. I have heard of people having overheating problems with their car and eventually find their coolant level is low. If this is the case check for leaks! Remember ladies and gentlemen keep em tuned, Rich Note the panel and rubber seal over the top of the radiator that stops air flowing around the radiator 15

18 MG Car Club of South Australia MSCA Super Sprint Round Peter Coulson & Murray Stephenson S unday 28 August, not cold, not wet, not hot, is this Mallala? The day was cool with a steady breeze but a pleasant day. A good field of eighty five drivers lined up for the day with ten MGCC members among them. Among the ten MGCC members there were six MGs, an MGB, three MGB V8s, a ZR and an MGF. Honda was entered but refused get onto the trailer on Saturday afternoon so was a no show. Everyone had a great day with no serious troubles or offs. Berry was working as starter and a number of club members were there as helpers and supporters including Sandra Cardnell, Steve Bowra, Michael Bugg, Hugh Webber, Adrian Ward, Faye Edwards, Wayne Hough, Murray Stephenson and Jamie Manning. Garry Bolt brought out his new car, an MGB GT V8, bright red for speed and sounding great. Must remember to put RESULTS Driver Car Time fuel in it before hitting the track as he was towed back before completing a John Davies Mitsubishi EVO 1:15.88 lap! Otherwise, he had a good day Jason Edwards Lotus Exige 1:19.13 sorting the car and getting used to it. Peter enjoyed his second sprint Laurie Houghton MGB V8 1:23.78 steadily coming to grips with the car Craig Ruediger Falcon GT 1:26.09 and getting quicker. He and Alan had Dean Hosking Toyota 86 1:26.79 a good day chasing each other and getting faster. Alan s new sway bar Dick Manning MGF 1:28.96 was clearly working as he went Gary Bolt MGBGTV8 1:29.49 quicker and the car looked more stable. Tim Edmonds MGB GT V8 1:30.36 John Davies managed to get into the Peter Coulson MG ZR 160 1: :15 being second fastest on the day Alan Cardnell MGB 1:38.23 behind a Nissan Time Attack car doing 1:07s! Jason was into the low 1:19s and Laurie was having a great battle with a turbo classic Mini Cooper in the high 1:23s. Dick Manning is getting quicker and clearly enjoying himself and Craig Ruediger s big Falcon is doing well. Dean Hosking s Toyota was going well but Tim Edmonds BGT seemed to be of the pace on the day. Murray s 16

21 Motorsport Mutterings Cont d The cancelled Round 4 Motorkhana has moved again. Originally scheduled for 14 August it was moved to 9 October with the state champs but that clashed with Bathurst and they wouldn t move so it is now on Saturday 29 October at Mallala. See details below. October sees the last few events for the MGCC 2016 calendar and we are already well into negotiating dates for 2017 which should include the usual mix of super sprints, hillclimbs, motorkhanas and the National Meeting plus a bonus Club Challenge in Melbourne. Will be a busy year. Upcoming events in the next months are: Sunday 2 October Vintage Collingrove Hillclimb This National event draws entrants from interstate with their Historic Cars to compete at this circuit on a regular basis as well as quite a lot of locals including some of our members as MGTCs are accepted as eligible Historic Cars.. 19 October 2016 Hopefully you will get this issue before the 2nd October weekend and may like to visit, I suggest you contact the Sporting Car Club for details Ed... Sunday 23 October MSCA Super Sprint Round 5, Mallala The final round of the Super Sprint series will be run at Mallala on October 23 rd. Supp Regs are available on the website and entries close on Friday 14 October. Get the entry in as early as possible as this round will be well subscribed. Triumph Sports Owners Association is holding its national meeting in SA and using this event as their speed event. Saturday 29 October South Australian Motorkhana Championship & Round 4 The SA Motorkhana Champs has moved again to avoid Bathurst. It will be run on Saturday (yes Saturday!) 29 October at Mallala. It will incorporate the Round 4 motorkhana which was cancelled. The normal state champs give competitors one run at each course so the first run will count for the Championship and, if you wish, you can do a second run and the quicker of the two will count for round 4. Sounds complex but it will work. Remember it is on a Saturday. Sunday 30 October Multi Club Hillclimb Collingrove The final multi club Hillclimb will be run at Collingrove which is the final event of the MGCC competition calendar. Entries through the CAMS online event entry system which is accessed via the CAMS member portal. This will be a big weekend, especially if you have included the spit roast on Saturday night!

26 MG Car Club of South Australia MID WEEK LUNCH RUN NEWS From Diane Holmes Thursday 8 September, ue to the wet weather only a few D MGs came on the run this month to Tanunda and John chose well to bring his MG to test for leaks - he couldn t have picked a better day. Our destination was The Clubhouse, located just behind the main shopping area and in November this year it will be their 125 th anniversary. I was very pleased when Dawn suggested this venue as it was new to me and it was very popular with the 50 members, who attended on the day. The club boasts modern facilities and the service and meals were of a high standard and we would recommend it to our members when they are touring the Barossa. It is also worth having a look at their website for more information, especially for those interested in the history. Next month we have a winery at Langhorne Creek to try out which was brought to our attention by Darryl & Jenni and in October David & I will start to make bookings for It s good to keep finding new places to try each year and we thank you for your past suggestions & we look forward to more of your ideas for future venues. Next midweek lunch run will be on 13 October, 2016 to Angus Plains Wines at Langhorne Creek meeting at the Wallis Tavern, Mt, Barker at 10.30am and departing 11.30am. If you would like to participate please remember to book as we need to confirm numbers for the venues. Diane & David Holmes - djdrholmes@gmail.com or phone

28 MG Car Club of South Australia T he 2016 Kimber Run was held on the 21 st of August. The weather turned out to be fantastic on the day, no rain and about 16 degrees, perfect weather for a run through the hills and on to Murray Bridge KIMBER RUN From...Allan Semmler Entrant numbers were down considerably on last year with only 96 cars and 189 people entered, about 6 cars did not turn up on the day. When I did the budget I was expecting a similar number to last year and consequently money wise things were very tight with extra cost for lunch and the plaques due to lower requirements. The end result will probably be a small loss to the clubs finances. We had a good run up the freeway to Hahndorf and on to Nairne for the morning tea stop, Thanks to the Nairne football club and in particular Kate Howie for her help. One minor mechanical problem at Nairne required the expertise of our RAA patrolman Nick when the heater valve on an MGB decided to leak a bit of coolant onto the distributor. The run from Nairne to Murray Bridge along the Old Princess Highway was great, the road is in really good condition. 26 Cars started to arrive at the Murray Bridge Racing Club around noon for lunch, the bar was set to open for drinks at pm but some members convinced the staff to open a little earlier to quench their thirst. Michael Schubert of Dukes Gourmet Catering provided lunch this year and I think most present would agree it was excellent. There was a few complaints regarding the time taken to be served, this was mainly due to 2 of Michaels staff failing to turn up on the day. Our Patron Ed Ordynski brought us up to date with the club facebook page and I welcomed two entrants all the way from Vancouver Canada Brad and Shannon Sharp who are friends of members Graham and Linda Byass, (Graham kindly handed over his MGZR to a Brad who is used to driving on the wrong side of the road) We had the following cars on the day, MGB 53, MGA 10, MGTD 7, MGTF 3, MGTC 3, MGZ &ZR 6, MGF & TF 6, MGY 2, MGA Twin Cam 2, MGC 1, I Mazda Ute, I Mitsubishi Van, and 1 SLK Mercedes. Thank you to the following for their help in making this years run a success, Maurice Linehan, Berry and Becky Treffers, Sandra and Alan Cardnell, Simon Wenzel (Supaloc Racing), Andy Carol (Pernod Ricard Wines), George Zizikos (RAA) & Nick Tangorra (RAA), MG Sales (spare parts), and Raelene Semmler. More Photo s are available on the club website. Cheers. Allan Semmler
