This issue contains a couple of articles and some photos that had to be put to one side in April and includes a couple of press releases that I am sure will make some of us happy, namely the forthcoming changes to the Conditional Registration Scheme where modified cars can participate in the Scheme, and the media release regarding the future of Mallala Motorsport Park. There was some speculation that if the Sharin Group purchased Mallala they would close it down so as not to detract from the Tailem Bend facility, however their press release clearly puts those misconceptions to bed after stating that there is some work to be undertaken at Mallala. I can think of one upgrade well overdue, driving off the circuit with slicks on the return road picking up a load of gravel on the hot tyres is a puncture waiting to happen. 10 H MG Car Club of South Australia MGC NEWS MGC conversations by Richard Mixture, June 2017 An Understeering Experience ello again, it s Richard here with some exciting news. MGCs understeer! Oh, you already knew that? After many years of reading the understeer comments by journalist both old and new (yes both the journalist and the articles) that nice young Register Coordinator now knows from his Easter experience at Mallala. He competed in both the Motorkhana at Pt Adelaide and at the speed event at Mallala. He told me that on the last run of the day at Pt Adelaide, while doing the slalom, he worked out how to turn and head in the opposite direction around the flag at the end of the line. Coming to the last flag you head out wide, he said, touch the brakes and then floor it. This manoeuvre brings the tail around and took 2.2 seconds off his time, wow, that s almost a 10% saving. If only he knew that when he started! 8 Many years ago our esteemed C Coordinator raced a historic clubman at Mallala and after some 30 years of not competing he reported that his right foot was as heavy as ever. Turn one was easy he said, although he had an interesting chat about the best line with that Formula Three champ, Dean Hosking. Turn two was hold your breath, ah just managed to keep it on the black stuff but turn three, he said was a dozy. This turn is the southern hairpin which opens out on exit and just as well. When you enter the turn, you head in a southerly direction and then turn quickly to go into a northerly direction but the MGC wants to take you in a westerly direction. Turn four? Well, I always thought it was a good idea to put a corner in the middle of the main straight, it keeps the interstaters guessing. Then there s turn five, the northern hairpin. Well this turn was a double dozy according to that nice young fella. I m not sure about the rest of the track as it always took time to recover from the northern hairpin he said. So the key here is brake late and brake into the turn in order to bring the tail around, but not too much mind you. When he got this technique right in the southern hairpin he gained 5 mph by the time he got down the straight and arrived at the northern hairpin. But then there was another problem, he ran out of brakes and the car just kept going in a northerly direction and off into the dirt. Road pads are a wonderful thing for the road. His major competition was Jason Goff from WA who had three SU carbies, a mild cam and a bit of head work plus a heavier sway bar at the front and one at the back so his car handled a lot better than that young fella s C GT. In fact it was about 7 seconds better. Did you have a look at that very nice MGC Roadster? The Melbourne mob call Allan Fabry a polisher and they are right but what a fantastic polisher he is. Allan has won five outright concours wins in six years in the post MG TF pre 1980 class. He competes in all the speed events and still manages to keep his MGC looking beautiful. Mind you he s only done 6,317 miles since he first registered it in 2010 after completing the restoration. Ron Hutton brought his green C GT all the way from Wagga and Mike Green-

11 wood and Jan brought their red C GT all the way from Strathalbyn. And what about Garry Julian s Sebring, tribute C? He s done so much work in such a short time. I heard one woman say she loved the colour of the car, it s just like velvet and indeed it is. The three Webers look pretty nice too but I expect that that woman would not find them so velvety. Wayne and Geraldine Hough left their Italian job at home and brought their red C GT down to Glenelg to support the MGC s 50 th. Wayne, wielding his large, June 2017 long, lens, at Pt Adelaide and Mallala caught a couple of magnificent shots shown here. I looked at Wayne s large, long, lens and thought it was nearly as long as he is high, but he sure knows how to use it. I m sure you ll agree. A great Easter Nat Meet thanks everyone. Remember ladies and gentlemen keep em tuned, Rich Looks balanced, but not in the hairpin turns Yes definitely understeer 9

12 MG Car Club of South Australia PRE-WAR & T REGISTER From...John Bray 4 May 2017 The Walk, Coromandel Valley Thane Martin s RAA Garage Walk the walk & talk the talk. Yes it was a case of turning up at the Walk to talk the talk in Thane s immaculate showpiece garage down at Coromandel Valley. Twenty eight enthusiasts signed in, twelve T Register cars turned a generally quiet suburb into a classic car display including the noisy others that got the dogs barking upon exiting the Walk from the RAA garage brilliantly illuminated and buzzing with talk the talk. Missing in action. Firstly the usual suspects, Buckley (China dolls) Bazzica( via Arthur) TD Mc Nabb (Shepparton via Kaniva ) Kenny Fisher ( feeling poorly) Doc Whyatt ( cruising with his beloved) Joy & Daddy Pearson (much too cold) serial pest John Neilson( too far too cold) and lastly the best excuse of all, Peter Cundy (carrying shopping bags in Europe for his beloved while hoping to sniff out NA parts) The Garage. Sincere thankyou to Thane Martin again this year for preparing his garage that I termed the RAA Garage full of beautiful memorabilia, signs, petrol bowsers, tin cans, posters, etc. His recent purchase of a Porsche banner from an unsuspecting neighbour clearing his garage to make way for an elderly aunt, was an outrageously cheap price (steal) that is testimony of his sniffing ability almost as good as the Doc Dallwitz in his day. It s about all they have in common though. Sorry to hear that Peter Auld was convinced that Thane actually ran a RAA 10 garage at Coromandel Valley on the Main Road, guess I have to be less than subtle in my articles in future, hate to see people getting lost and frustrated looking for the place. Visitor Club member and first timer to a register meeting was Simon Ewart who now has a 1946 MG TC, chassis 0644, engine XPAG and would you believe it, it is listed in a register booklet that Wes Southgate gave me several years ago, miracle! Simon purchased it out of Sydney NSW. General Business. Well, there was some and lots of interjections from the assembled populous as usual, however I have endeavoured to report on a few that are worthy of sensible comment, Russell Girth, please note. Anthony Pearson thanked members of the Register who assisted in the Nat Meet concours at Glenelg over Easter. Anthony is to be congratulated on his leadership running the event this year. Anthony will be overseas with his bulbs in June, Chelsea Flower Show I think. Maurice Linehan gave an insight on the difficulties of wearing Stephies pyjamas and the potential embarrassment that can ensue if one is caught at an inopportune moment. Well that s basically what he said. Nat Meet Director Tim Edmonds appeared and thanked members who participated in what was a hugely successful meeting for the car club at Easter. Terry Wright s amazing and highly professional photographs of the racing at Phillip Island were a highlight of the night that kept interested party s preoccupied and attention diverted from important aspects of the register meeting,

13 June 2017 Next meeting. June 1 We will be hosted by Robert Horn at 6 Mills Street Clarence Park again this year. A must see for those who missed it last year. It will be a most entertaining and informative night again, I can assure you like signing in and paying the $5 fee for all. 5 T Types at least in his wonderous food and raffle tickets. Alladin s cave of MG history and wonderment. Which brings me to the point that you pay $5 of which $3 goes to the host for Future meetings. Mike Sherrell s got another airing from September 7 Leigh Ritcher 21 Hillside Bob Schapel, $90 delivered it seems, Rd Aldgate orders can be taken. October 5 Peter & Brownyn Micklem There was a trifle more business but I 5 7 Ya n t a r i n g a R d P a e c h t o wn was distracted waiting for the Dominos (Hahndorf) Pizza boy to arrive for supper to get it all November 2 Register Hotel Dinner down but I will try harder next month at TBA Robert Horn s register night. December # Deep South Mille Miglia John Tamke has taken to driving the Trial TBA Elfin around the streets again, maybe If you can put these addresses somewhere that is convenient it will save a lot the RV8 looks a bit spoofy turning up at the register, but the Elfin certainly emits of stress on my behalf. a great exhaust note as he barrels away That s about it from me, thanks for turning up and supporting the Register of T from Thane s quiet neighbourhood, am I right Ian Hobbs? Types and other Pre-war exotics, its always great fun to talk the talk, and Interesting facts The older the MG and its owner get, the one more thing: more they have in common. Yes they You wear your MG cap around not driving, every bugger thinks that you are both have a little rot in their sills, they re harder to fire up in the morning and their hiding your baldness, wear it in the MG exhaust is a lot more noxious than it hood down then, only 95 % of people used to be. think that. Good to see the boys from the Deep Cheers, have a great time next meeting South Peter and Don up at the meeting and pay attention if it s not too much to again from Goolwa, a visit is certainly on ask. the radar maybe December in daylight John Kim Bray, Imperial Master of the hours this year. 14 T MG Car Club of South Australia BREAKFAST RUN NEWS From..Steve Spong Breakfast Run to Murray Bridge Sunday 30th April 2017 here was a very good turn out for the April breakfast run to Murray Bridge and the wet weather held off too, so all signs remained good for the day. At the start we had a visit from the cops as they cruised around Veale Gardens. They were very interested in the cars and commented on how great they all looked, wishing us a pleasant drive as they left to find some real criminals. So we set off and basically followed the old Princes Highway there, whilst some made their own way. The destination was Sturt Reserve, which runs along by the river and which provides a large area for parking and picnicking on a well kept parkland, and was a great spot for the 2 dogs to run. Many then made a day of it by having lunch at the local pub, some driving on to Tailem Bend for lunch and others just meandering home. So thanks to all who came, and to David McNabb for taking many of the photos. Attendees: Don Walker & Jeanette Walsingham-Meath MGTC Local club member and first time on a breakfast run. 16 MG Car Club of South Australia MID WEEK LUNCH RUN NEWS From..Rodger Polkinghorne Thursday 11 May 2017 utumn is one of the best times of the A year for classic car motoring, especially in the Adelaide Hills. After morning tea at the Tea Tree Gully Hotel thirteen cars set out for the Barossa. The run through Inglewood and then the twists and turns around Chain of Ponds reservoir was at a steady pace before the turn off to Kersbrook where the road straightens out to allow more consistent top gear MG speeds. As we proceeded through Williamstown and into the Barossa the scenery became more picturesque with the yellow and orange autumn leaves at their stunning best. The grape vines are also changing colour and the paddocks have now greened up for winter. Because traffic was light we were able to keep together. It s a great sight to see MGs in convoy negotiating the great hills roads we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep. A car not seen before on a lunch run was Jo Sheward s racing red F. Although Laurie had no idea of the rego number he somehow managed to get the keys and slipped into the driving seat for a day long test drive. The Clubhouse in Tanunda is a venue we have visited for lunch on previous occasions where they have a comprehensive menu and provide easy parking. The next mid week lunch run will be on 8 June 2017 to the Sailmaster Tavern, North Haven meeting at The Maid, Stepney at 10.30am departing at am. If you intend to come please advise Diane & David Holmes djdrholmes@gmail.com or to enable venue bookings to be confirmed. 18 MG Car Club of South Australia Multi Club 1 Hillclimb April 30 th 2017 fter a couple of weeks of rain on A and off, the weather decided to give us a good day for racing up a hill. The sun managed to poke its head out through the clouds enough to warm the track up and allow for some good times. A massive field of 128 cars entered and things ran pretty smoothly all day with only a few stoppages and we all ended up with 5 runs for the day. There were 4 Mg club members entered for the day, John Davies once again out in the Lancer Evo and ended up with the second quickest time overall. Craig Ruediger was back with the Ford XA GT (definitely the biggest and heaviest car in the field), Alan Cardnell in the MGB was doing better each run trying different things out improving on his times as the day went on. And I was again enjoying the MGZS180 having a great battle between a Lotus Exige Cup car in my class and also with Craig in the big v8. I managed to finish 3 rd in my class out of 12 cars, all road registered classes were quite large. Craig did a fantastic job and finished second in his class against some pretty quick cars. Tim Edmonds once again volunteered his services to Scrutineer although he was finding it tough not competing as we all do when we come to watch, we also had a visit from Mike and Jan Greenwood who popped in to check out the racing. Overall a great day of racing with no one having any issues and driving home safely. See you all with your helmets on at the next event. 20 MG Car Club of South Australia CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION Hon Stephen Mullighan MP Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Tuesday, 9 May, 2017 Changes to conditional registration for historic vehicles scheduled for July 1 Widespread changes to the conditional registration scheme for historic vehicles will be scheduled to take effect from July 1 after they were approved by State Cabinet. The changes will remove red tape which prevents thousands of car club members from accessing the limited 90-day registration scheme, allowing more classic car lovers to enjoy their hobby out on the road. Under current laws, historic vehicles are not allowed to be significantly modified from their original design, meaning even slight modifications, such as a CD player or air conditioner, can prevent car owners from using the scheme. The same restriction also prevents historic left-hand drive vehicles which have had safety upgrades, such as better braking systems, from taking to the roads. Following consultation with key stakeholders such as car clubs, changes to the scheme will: classic vehicles, as well cosmetic enhancements -off manufacture date of 1979 to a rolling 30-year vehicle age spections, reducing the administrative burden on these groups -hand drive vehicles with safety improvements such updated braking systems This is another example of the State Government s commitment to reducing red tape as part of the Simplify Day reforms. Background Conditional registration was introduced in 1992 and allows historic, left-hand and street rod vehicles to be driven on public roads for up to 90 days a year. There are currently 180 recognised motoring clubs in SA with approximately 15,000 vehicles registered under the conditional registration scheme, comprising a mix of historic, left-hand drive and street rod vehicles. For vehicles which are rarely driven, the current $90 annual cost is a significant saving over regular registration costs, which can be up to $846 for 6-cylinder vehicles. Currently the vehicles cannot be significantly modified from their original design but the amendments to the scheme will allow access to the scheme for a broader number of late model classic and modified classic cars. Vehicles with major modifications such as engine upgrades or major structural changes will still be required to undergo safety inspections and obtain relevant approvals to gain access to the road network. Pending approval from the Governor, the regulation changes will be scheduled to take effect from July 1,

21 Quotes attributable to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan Advertisement for MG Motoring Magazine 2016 June 2017 Since announcing plans to change conditional registration last year, there s been an overwhelmingly positive response from the South Australian motoring community. Changing this scheme will help to preserve South Australia s motoring heritage by reducing costs and red tape for car enthusiasts. Many of these vehicles haven t been registered and driven, and have been sat in sheds and garages because minor modifications meant they were not eligible for cheaper conditional registration which allows a vehicle to be driven up to 90 days a year. These common sense changes mean that car enthusiasts can make modifications to their vehicles, such as cosmetic and safety improvements, without forcing them off the road and into the garage. Thousands of previously unused vehicles are also now expected to join the scheme which will also support tourism events such as car runs, shows and concourse displays. It has been a pleasure to work with car clubs and vehicle enthusiasts to develop these change and in particular Glenn Stankevicius from the Street Machine Association of South Australia should be congratulated for his efforts. I believe that once we are in possession of the revised Code it will be incumbent upon the committee to review our rules and procedures for the new Scheme. Editor... 24 MG Car Club of South Australia EARLY EMGEEING IN EN ZEDD AVID McNABB has continued his D recent regular ritual of popping over the Tasman every couple of years to take part in New Zealand's biennial Pre-56 MG Rally. Alternating between NZ's South and North Islands, for 2017 the venue was Wanganui in the north. This now iconic international event, held over six days late Feb, was notable for being the 21st Rally. Yes, these octagonal gatherings have been going for over four decades, with the first being held in 1977 in Christchurch (Adelaide's Sister City) where TD McNabb was chairman of the organising committee. As such, David was kindly acknowledged by the 2017 organisers along with kiwi demi-god Peter Croft (known as the Godfather) who was also on the initial 1977 committee. This pair Croft in his MGJ2 and McNabb in an MGTD were the sole survivors from the entry list that started the whole show, although for this year's Rally there were two MGs taking part that had actually been there in Now with new custodians, these were an MGTA and 1931 F1 Magna, both driven a considerable distance from the South Island to arrive at Wanganui. I heard you asking how the author of this report was competing in a TD. It's rather expensive freighting MGs over the Tasman, so David was able to arrange the loan of a good friend's brilliantly restored TD based in Hamilton, and he imported wife Kerry (as navigator / riding mechanic), so the scene was set for a MaGic Octa-week. A brief mention of the MG Rally prelude: In the couple of days preceding the Pre- 56 Rally many of the MG folk went to Napier for that city's annual Art Deco weekend a fabulous experience with most folk dressing the part plus an amazing classic car parade of over 80 vehicles where the pre war MGs joined in. Only snag was that for nearly three days it poured non stop. Luckily the weather improved a lot after that. Alongside entrants from Australia, Netherlands, UK, USA, Canada and obviously host nation NZ, we were privileged to meet Paul Plummer's replacement as MG Overseas Director Peter Cook a top bloke owns an MGB V8 and codrove a TF1500 in the motorkhana. McNabb took delight in being able to Meet & Greet Pete prior to our Easter Natmeet in Adelaide! 22

25 Other Aussie entrants included team Slattery, Robertson, Dunsterville, Godwin, Redhead, meaning Australia had around 14 official attendees, mostly in borrowed pre war MGs courtesy of the kiwi Mega Guru Gary Wall who often loans out his vast collection of pre war cars. Rally HQ was set at the Cecil Kimber Room on Victoria Ave, Wanganui where most of the enjoyable functions took place. To briefly summarise this well organised event of events, the Concours went as planned where entries included over 20 MGAs, 5 ZB Magnettes, 15 TFs, 8 TDs, a YA, 9 TA/TC, 18 Pre wars, the premier category nearly 80 cars in total. [Breakdown of Pre wars: VA x 4, J2, WA x 2, SA x 2, M, NA, K1, F1, L, TA Tickford]. Overall Concours winners were a lovely 23 June L-type (although discussion continued about the car's all white colour scheme), and a freshly restored white MGA Deluxe. The Observation Trial was run by the Baxter family in memory of iconic Bill Baxter who died last year. Other notable events were the grass motorkhana where a major player was a Twin Cam MGA (with power steering). Christchurch's Ollie Reid in an ex Aust MGTD won the overall Lady Driver's Award. The following day's speed event morphed into a complex bent sprint / combo Giant Gymkhana course on seal which proved quite confusing to a large percentage of the entrants. Heaps of socialising, as only MG folk can do so well, prevailed throughout this Pre 56 Rally, culminating in the allimportant presentation dinner with an Art Deco dress theme. The next big NZ Pre 56 MG Rally is in Cromwell 2019, not far from Queenstown. Enquire now to TD McNabb, or submit an excuse as to why you shouldn't miss out on just so much MG fun! Two post-rally observations: Don't moan about the price of fuel here in Australia. Over in NZ they're being reamed for at least $2 litre (that hurts!). And best advice is don't try falling headfirst down a 20 step staircase in the dark that also hurts and you can break bones (as McNabb found to his chagrin and dismay a few days after the MG Rally finished).

30 MG Car Club of South Australia My ride around Mallala in a Race Lamborghini. n the Easter Saturday during the National Rally, while down at Wigley Reserve I purchased a ticket in the raffle for the ride in Kevin Weeks Lambor- O ghini Gallardo at the Mallala racetrack on Easter Monday. I really thought I had just donated $20.00 to the club so it was a huge surprise when I received a phone call on Sunday from Sandra Cardnell to say I had won a ride. On the day I was excited but also a little anxious of what was to come. Marie and I arrived early and watched the MG's thunder around the track. Some of these guys can really drive and they certainly get the most from their cars. Time to prepare for my ride. Kevin Weeks was getting ready and warming the up the car. Allan Semmler borrowed a race jacket for me and I borrowed a helmet. I couldn't contain my excitement as I was strapped into the car, a few kind and reassuring words from Kevin and we were off. The immense power and take off of the car was incredible as I was thrown back into the seat. As we approached the turns I started to wonder if Kevin had forgotten how to use the brakes, almost bracing myself to leave the track and hit the dirt. But the way he slowed that machine and flew through the turns was exhilarating to say the least. After the first couple of turns I let myself relax and totally enjoy the three laps around the track. It was an absolutely wonderful experience and a great way to enjoy a day. Many thanks to Kevin Weeks for donating the ride and bringing me back safely, also Allan Semmler and the kind gentleman who loaned me his helmet. Ian Baum 28

32 MG Car Club of South Australia MALLALA -THE FUTURE Here is an excerpt from the Peregrine Corporation Website regarding the future of the Mallala Racing Circuit Peregrine Corporation is continuing its strategy to rebuild the motorsport sector in South Australia by announcing it has purchased the Mallala Motor Sport Park, 55 kilometres north of Adelaide. The Mallala race circuit was established in 1961 on the site of the former RAAF's 24 Squadron operational air base to host the 1961 Australian Grand Prix (AGP). Since that time Mallala has played a pivotal role for South Australian motorsport hosting the Australian Drivers Championship from 1961 to 1971, and then the Australian Touring Car Championship from 1989 to Peregrine Corporation is the developer of The Bend Motorsport Park, a $100 million development south east of Adelaide. It is a privilege to become the custodian of the State s rich heritage in motorsport that comes with the Mallala Motor Sport Park and to continue the legacy of the great Clem Smith whose ashes now rest at the track itself. I observed a moment of silence for him at Mallala today and pledged to keep alive his legacy said Dr Sam Shahin, Executive Director for Peregrine Corporation. We are determined for South Australia to be the destination for motorsport in Australia and Mallala will play an essential role in that." Mallala is a very complimentary fit with the new world-class facility we are building at The Bend Motorsport Park. To have multiple motorsport facilities in South Australia will allow us to develop a strong local State Championship series across the two venues for both cars and motorbikes that will also create many new job opportunities." 30 We are now on the hunt for key people to help us grow the motorsport business across the two venues with the first priorities being a senior Sales & Marketing Manager and a senior Commercial Manager said Dr Shahin. The Mallala race circuit was purchased in the mid 70 s and subsequently developed by Clem Smith who recently passed away. Smith is remembered as being a fiercely loyal and passionate man committed to motorsport. Mallala Motorsport Park is embedded in the history of motorsport in South Australia. It is certainly a memorable place for me said 5 time V8 Supercar champion, Mark Skaife. Skaife won 3 times at Mallala as part of the Touring Car Championship between 1991 & 1994, and is a two-time winner at Mallala during the Australian Drivers Championship in 1990 and He also held the fastest lap record at the 1992 Group A Touring Car Championship in the famous Godzilla, the Nissan Skyline GTR. I am sure this press release will put a lot of misconceptions about the future of Mallala to rest for Club racers and sprinters like ourselves Laurie Houghton

34 MG Car Club of South Australia A Visit to Mike Sherrell s Place After a very enjoyable sea voyage on the MS Astor from Outer Harbour near Port Adelaide Jan & I headed to Fremantle (Read Freo!) on a delightful 6 day cruise ( Read Food/ Wine Fest!) and arrived in Western Australia on a delightful autumn morning in March, still in Australian waters all the way. I had previously sent an to Mike Sherrell letting him know that we were heading over his way. We only had a few days in Freo but managed to do a bit of sightseeing, out to the Car Museum in York and this trip included catching up again with Mike. We called on him mid-morning to find his home is also his office and workshop and living on a corner block in South Perth means that he can have dual accesses. We were lucky enough to see Mike as he had just taken delivery of the first batch of his new publication, which is a continuation of his very famous book TCs Forever. Mike very kindly posed for the photo showing both copies and the photo was taken in his workshop, in the background you can see his own amazingly original and very reliable black TC, one he has owned since he was 16 years old and he has driven this car over 600,000 Miles. His other MG is a wonderfully distinctive silver and green blown road and track machine and he is at present building up a similar car for another TC aficionado but this time in black with red from a donor TC from SA. If anyone wants to obtain a copy of this new edition please contact Mike direct via on miketcsher@gmail.com. Mike Greenwood Strathalbyn - March
