3 Editorial: Happy New Year to all HRCC members and friends. Wishing you all a safe and happy year of good health. A new year of historic motorsport is ahead of us and the clubs committee is already hard at work planning the 6 major competition events as well as other activities such as the involvement it has at the CAMS Motorsport Expo which takes place shortly. Including a display of cars, the club will run a tutorial to drivers new to CAMS events. Thank you to those who are helping to help get new faces into our sport and hopefully become club members. This issue covers the entry process for the TTT and SuperSprints weekend as well as the CAMS Motorsport Expo. Some of the Group Leaders have sent in news from their groups activities, thank you. There is important information from CAMS covering all 5 th category cars, be sure to make yourself aware of what will come into play for the future. Interest in resurrecting Speed on Tweed in 2019 is gathering momentum. The Group N, Queensland Historic Touring Car Association has announced its 2019 race calendar and can be found on page 9. Then there is the classifieds with a few new items and cars. Early December I was in South Australia and attended the Adelaide Motorsport Festival. On page 8 is my report on what I believe is a unique event that was very entertaining. Historic, classic, modern motorsports of all descriptions certainly appealed to the SA public who came in droves. I was impressed. Don t forget that you can contribute here too. Send me an or give me a call. Group Leader Changes There have been some changes of Group Leaders for Group F Geoff Karger will take over from Len Don Race Group News and Reports Group N Claude Ciccotelli will take over from Kev Moore Group U Mark Stockwell will take over from Mark Trenoweth. Ian Welsh The club very much thanks Len, Kev and Mark for the dedication, time and effort they have contributed in keeping their respective groups informed and well organized. Thanks also goes to Geoff, Claude and Mark for volunteering to take on these important roles. You can find contact details for all the group leaders on Page 2 of Historic Torque. For those that do not know, I have agreed to undertake the role of Historic Formula Ford Group Leader for HRCC, a position that was previously held by Len Don. (Many thanks to Len for his outstanding work in this role for a number of years.) I hope to follow up during the year with further with information that may be of assistance to Historic Formula Fords and on upcoming events. The first item that I would like to advise is that in 2019 Historic Formula Fords will have a State Points series, held over four rounds at Morgan Park on the dates below. (Other states will be holding similar series and we are hoping that a National Points series will also be held consisting of rounds from each of the State series stay tuned for further information on this) QLD Points Series Rd 1 Autumn Historics 4-5 May Rd 2 Historic QLD July Rd 3 Qld Champ 7-8 Sept Rd 4 Qld Champ 2-3 Nov For each category, points will be awarded as follows to outright placegetters in each race (Fa, Fb and Fc): 1 st = 30 points, 2 nd =26 points, 3 rd = 24 points, then dropping by 2 points per place. The competitor achieving the highest number of points accrued in the series rounds for the category will win the series for that category. However, if two or more competitors achieve the same number of points, the winner will be determined by - 1. The competitor who achieves the greatest number of 1st places. 2. If the number of 1st place achievements is the same, the competitor who achieves the greatest number of 2nd places. Cont on page 4 3 Website:

We are hoping to get as many cars on the track as possible for this 50 th year and look forward to your participation. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further information. Group M O Q R Sports by Mike Gehde HSRCA Tasman Festival 1 st & 2 nd Dec, 2018 Many HRCC Members entered the Tasman Festival Meeting at Sydney Motorsport Park where the weather was extremely hot. Sports cars were combined with Q & R Racing, however qualifying was staggered and we had a sports car race on our own on the Saturday. For Sunday it was all feature races and Keith Carling won the Group R Sports Car division from Kevin Gray and Bruce Taylor. Our final race was early Sunday arvo so we were able to load up and start heading home by 4 o clock. HSRCA President, Richard Cardew congratulates Keith Carling on his Sports Car race win. Noosa Summer Hillclimb 10 th & 11 th Nov, 2018 Mike Gehde in his Lola Sports 2000 at the hot Tasman Festival. Was run with fabulous weather and a big field of entries. Unfortunately, Historic Cars were blended with other breeds explained due to lack of Historic log booked entries. Garry Ashford in his Sports 2000 was genuinely outclassed by several modern cars but improved his times. One has to ask the question of continued club involvement if Historic Cars are not recognised in their own right and / or our members show no interest; having said that, we did have around 35 members participating in various categories. The Sports 2000 Group continues to grow with over 25 cars registered as log booked. Kevin Gray presented with his 2 nd place trophy by HSRCA President, Richard Cardew. Group U News Keith Carling has located and acquired his Australian and New Zealand Championship winning sports sedan and is now getting it log booked as a Group U Historic Sports Sedan. To all Drivers at HRCC events - Be aware of this, For 2019 HRCC events, race officials will be placing greater emphasis on the driving conduct of all competitors as part of their duties during each event. Compliance with CAMS Race Meeting Standing Regulations, Section 7, Code of Driving Conduct will be the judgement criteria by which all competitors are expected to comply with. Drivers reported by track marshals may face a range of penalties as seen fit. Drivers should make themselves aware of the Code of Conduct which is available from the CAMS website here HRCC at the CAMS Motorsport Expo The club will be well represented at the Expo with a display of 7 cars and club members available to answer enquiries. Showcasing historic motorsport to potential new members is one of the aims. The club will also be giving instruction for new drivers about to take on CAMS motorsport for the first time. This is an essential lead in to the upcoming TTT/Super Sprints weekend event. Come along, say hello and also check out the other motorsport displays. 5 News From CAMS Concerning Historic Racing Historic Fuel Requirements for 2019 The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has made necessary changes to permit the use of alternate unleaded racing fuels and additives to those participating in events for the 5th Category. From 1 July 2019, leaded fuel is not permitted for use in any CAMS sanctioned motor sport, in line with the Australian Government s decision to ban the use of lead in fuel for motor sport. CAMS revised fuel regulations will allow Historic competitors a wide choice of alternate fuels and additives, readily and commercially available in Australia. Schedule G Fuel of the 2019 CAMS Manual will apply the removal of the use of lead in fuel as of 1 July 2019 Schedule G will now include the provision for CAMS Groups, such as 5 th Category Historic, to apply alternate fuel and additive criteria in the specific Group regulations to better suit the needs of those historic engines that have relied on lead in the fuel since they were originally manufactured. The 5th Category Historic Cars; Vehicle Eligibility General Requirements will provide the definitions for the fuels and additives that are now permitted for the 5 Th Category. The definition applied for unleaded racing fuel and additives is much broader than that defined in Schedule G and will present a range of fuels and additives, commercially available in the Australian market to choose from. The general conditions of Schedule G will still apply, where not varied by the 5 th Category regulations; such as when an alcohol fuel is being used in competition, the car must display symbols with the letter A in white on a circular red background with a white border and must be placed adjacent to the racing number on each side of the vehicle, and one adjacent to the filler point. HISTORIC FUEL Q & A Q; What changes need to be made when changing from leaded fuel to unleaded racing fuel? A; It is advisable to consult your engine builder or reputable engine tuner as the engine may need to be re-tuned to suit the selected unleaded racing fuel. Q; What are the implications if I don t retune the engine? A; Unleaded racing fuels have differing viscosity and burn rates to leaded fuel, as well as a change to the lubrication qualities of the fuel. Differencing fuel specifications may cause issues with not only the engine components but also how the engine performs. Q; Are there any problems that may arise from using unleaded racing fuel apart from tuning? A; Unleaded racing fuels from various suppliers will have differing qualities, and may suit certain application better than others. It is advisable to check the specifications of the selected fuel to see if there are compounds in the fuel that may affect any of the components installed in the engine or fuel system. An example is the use of ethanol which is known to affect certain types of rubber and plastics commonly found in older specification fuels pumps etc. Q; Am I allowed to used additives in the new fuel allowed for my category? A; The 5 th Category Historic will now permit the use of any additive that is commercially available in Australia and can be used by those vehicles as listed for the specific Group. It also remains permitted to use the additives that are listed in CAMS Manual Schedule G. Q; Are the various brands of unleaded racing fuel compatible? A; It is advisable to consult your engine builder and tuner before changing to a different supplier. Each fuel supplier should be able to provide the specific detail of what their fuel is including its contents and specifications Permitted Fuel and Additives only for 5 th Category Historic Vehicles From the 1 July 2019, leaded fuel is not permitted for use in any CAMS sanctioned motor sport. For the 5 th Category, the following is to be included in the 5th Category Historic Cars; Vehicle Eligibility General Requirements to apply the use of alternate Unleaded Racing Fuels and Additives. Permitted Fuel and Additives only for 5 th Category Historic Vehicles Unleaded Racing Fuel; Unleaded Racing Fuel is permitted as follows: In accordance with Schedule G Fuel of the CAMS Manual; or An Unleaded Racing Fuel with a maximum Ethanol content of 30%, which is commercially available in Australia and distributed by a Fuel Supplier and complies with the Fuel Standards Determinations made under the Fuel Quality Standards Act. Pump Fuel; In accordance with Schedule G Fuel of the CAMS Manual. Ethanol Blended Fuel; In accordance with Schedule G Fuel of the CAMS Manual. Fuel Additives; Fuel Additive is any additive which is commercially available in Australia and is distributed for the purpose of being added to a fuel to provide additional lubrication to the fuel or to effect the specification of the fuel (such as the Research Octane Number [RON]). 5 th Category Historic Vehicles permitted Fuel and Additives by Group The table on the next page details the permitted Fuel and Fuel Additive usage for each 5th Category Historic Group. 5 Website:

6 NOTE: 1. Leaded Racing Fuel or any Fuel containing Lead is not permitted for use in CAMS Motor Sport from 1 July Each Group may use the additives as per these regulations or those additives as permitted in Schedule G of the CAMS Manual. Schedule G of the CAMS Manual is available at - Published 14 th Dec 2018 Forward Head Restraint While Highly Recommended for 2019, CAMS is making compulsory from 2020, the use of FHR in Speed events, eg Sprints, Hillclimbs and Regularity, for logbooked cars and all 1 st Category cars. This will not apply to road registered cars without appropriate compatible safety gear, i.e. safety cage & 5-6 point harness. This will mean anyone racing a 1 st category vehicle, or car with a CAMS logbook which applies a Race, Rally/Road, Off Road or 5th Category classification, and used in an event applicable to its Log Book classification, requires the mandatory use of a FHR. The use of FHR will not become mandatory in Speed Events for competitors who will be participating in events without the mandatory use of additional equipment such as a safety cage, safety harness or competition-style seat, such as using a road registered vehicle at a club s come and try day. FHRs are now common place throughout motor sport, providing a significant improvement to the safety of those participating in the sport, especially in the instance of a forward impact incident. The vast majority of CAMS motor sport disciplines require the use of FHR, with various studies showing the benefits, with reduced injuries to the neck by providing additional support to the head through attachments to the helmet. All competitors will be encouraged to follow this recommendation in 2019, before it becomes compulsory in The below change will apply in the 2019 CAMS Manual of Motor Sport, Schedule D: It is highly recommend that a FHR compliant with Standard A and a Helmet compliant with Standard A is worn when competing in: (a) Each 1st Category automobile, except for a Superkart or a 5th Category automobile which is exempt from the use of a FHR; (b) Each automobile the subject of a CAMS Log Book which applies a RACE, RALLY/ROAD, OFF ROAD or 5th CATEGORY classification whereby that automobile when used in an event applicable to its Log Book classification requires the mandatory use of a FHR. NOTE: The use of a FHR is not required for a Road Registered automobile for a SPEED Event whereby the necessary equipment for the correct use of a FHR is not fitted to the automobile (i.e. 5/6 point safety harness). 7 More from CAMS... Rain Lights will become mandatory for all vehicles competing in race events from 2020, with competitors encouraged to begin using them from 1 January 2019 onwards. This applies to all race events on closed circuits across all levels of motor sport. Whilst previously reserved only for first category vehicles, or where specific category regulations required their use, the CAMS Manual - General Requirements of Automobiles Schedule C will be updated to define the requirements for the installation of a rain light on each competition vehicle for race events. Where fitted a rain light, must be switched on when so directed by the Clerk of the Course or their representative, as defined in the CAMS Race Meeting Standing Regulations. Go here to see the information from CAMS - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF AUTOMOBILES in 2019 Schedule C (a) A rearward facing red warning lamp, acting as a rain light, must be clearly visible from the and mounted not more than 100mm from the centreline of the car. Each lamp must: (i) be of at least 15 watts, or an LED lamp with FIA or CAMS approval may be used and may strobe; and (ii) have a minimum surface area of 20cm2 and a maximum surface area of 140cm2; and (iii) be able to be switched on by the driver when normally seated in the car.. rear Stalled Car Warnings An investigation into a system for the better management of a stalled car on a start grid is also being undertaken by CAMS. This investigation will seek to providing motor sport competitors with a better outcome when dealing with a stalled or slow moving car at the start of a race. Further details will be advised in due course. Published: 12 December, CAMS Manual Updates - General Requirements The 2019 General Requirements for Cars and Drivers, commonly referred to as the CAMS Manual Schedules, are now live on the CAMS website - Included is a Modifications of Rules document, which provides a brief on the changes to the Schedules for The changes also marked in each Schedule Document for ease of reference. A ZIP file of the 2019 version is also provided as a single download point of all Schedules, along with an archive ZIP of the 2018 version. Published: 4 January, 2019 Speed on Tweed 2019 Planning to resurrect the old Speed on Tweed race event is well underway and it has generated a lot of positive interest. To be held in Murwillumbah in September 2019 on the same track layout as past Speed on Tweed events. With approval already gained from the Tweed Shire and good public support, it is now dependent on gaining enough funding to stage the event. Pledges have been received for a substantial part of the overall budget to enable the 3-day event to proceed, however to ensure there is enough time to organize the event, the balance of funding must be secured by the end of March Race secretary, Mark Stockwell has advised that CAMS approval has not yet been gained but the main focus will be on safety aspects. An entry of approximately 200 cars is expected with historic cars being a large portion. 7 Website:

8 2018 Adelaide Motorsport Festival 1 st & 2 nd December Report and Photos by Ian Welsh Old Adelaide town and South Australia is steeped in all-things cars with a history of car manufacturing and motorsport stretching way back in time that has seen it host both national and international Grands Prix. Adelaide is the place of festivals so it is no surprise that the Sporting Car Club of South Australia have established a 5 day Motorsport Festival that pays homage to the past as well as embracing the now and future. Well promoted and with a parade through the CBD on the Friday evening, including a driver meet and greet, it attracted a huge public response. Ex F1 cars being driven through city streets is certainly head turning. A classic rally in the Adelaide Hills kicked off the festival. Then on the weekend it was sprints taking place on a portion of what was once the Adelaide GP F1 circuit on the edge of the CBD. The sprints attracted over 500 entries headed by 14 ex F1 cars and 2 ex LeMans Porsches. Display cars from classic car clubs, hot rod clubs and prestige car manufacturers totalled more than 600 cars. A huge event spread out over an 800-metre strip of parkland. There was an auction of cars that were deemed to be collectable as part of the show. Competition wise, the sprint track is 1.5km, has a track density of 14 cars running in 10 to 15 minute sessions. Entry cost was $895. Ivan Capelli in the Leyton House ex F1 car set a new lap record of sec. But not far behind was Tim Macrow in the new S5000 open wheeler with a lap time of sec. An exciting prospect if this fast and loud race car can be successfully established as an Australia s premier open wheel category. David Brabham gave the Adelaide manufactured Brabham BT62 sports car a run for times of around 45 sec. There was also a Winged Warrior event where Matt Hall in a Red Bull Air Race airplane had drag races on the main straight with Jim Richards in a Porsche GT2, David Brabham in his Brabham BT62 and then Ivan Capelli in the Leyton House Ex F1. Only Capelli was able to beat the aircraft. Hall then gave a spectacular aerobatic demonstration over the circuit. There were plenty of 5 th Category historic cars on track also. Well represented were Group U Historic Sports Sedans with 14 entrants and Group A & C Heritage Touring Cars. HRCC members Garry Ford and Dean Collis took part in the Sports Sedan sprints This is the third time the event has been staged and it is growing in stature. With spectator attendance of fifty thousand it was a resounding success. Well organised with lots of volunteer marshals keeping the spectators up to date with information as well as keeping them safe from race cars travelling around the pit area. Congratulations to the Sporting Car Club of SA for establishing a fantastic motorsport event that brings out its best for public consumption. A recommended event well worthy of your involvement. 8 Website:
