3 BY THE NUMBERS 8 Eight of Radford s 15 home runs have came as the first run of the game for the Highlanders. 39 Danny Hrbek ranks 39th nationally in the toughest to strikeout category, striking out once every 15.1 plate appearances. 78 Opposing teams have scored 78 runs in the final three innings on 104 hits. Opponents have combined for 14 doubles and eight home runs. LAST MEETING (APRIL 10, 2013) Radford recorded its most historic baseball victory Wednesday night at Virginia. The Highlanders defeated a top 10 team for the second time in their history, but the first over a team ranked as high as No. 4 as the Cavaliers were entering the game. RU held on for a 9-8 win at Davenport Field. RU s previous win over a top 10 team was over South Carolina in The Highlanders (20-11) struck for three runs in the top of the first. Josh Gardiner led off the game with a walk followed by a Josh Reavis single. Jeff Kemp reached on an error, and Zach Woolcock plated the first run on a groundout. Alexander Lee singled home a pair of runs, and RU took a lead it would never give up. After the Cavaliers scored a run in the bottom half of the first, the Highlanders exploded for six runs on six hits in the second. The highlight was a Kemp three-run homer to left field. Reavis also knocked in a run with a single, and Hunter Higgerson delivered a two-run double to give the Highlanders a 9-1 lead. Virginia (30-4) tallied a run in the fourth on a solo homer by Mike Papi, and added two more on a two-run homer in the sixth by Derek Fisher. Dylan Nelson (4-2) lasted 6.0 innings and allowed four runs on four hits to earn the victory. Jeff Maxwell worked two innings of scoreless relief, and the Highlanders took a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth. They would need all of the five-run lead. After Daniel Bridgeman started the inning on the mound and was unable to get an out before the Cavaliers loaded the bases, closer Michael Costello came on to earn the save, but it wasn t without some tense moments for Radford fans. The Cavaliers rallied for four runs, but Costello got clean-up hitter Brandon Downes to pop up with runners at first and second to end the game. The save was Costello s seventh of the season. Ryan Burgess joined Gardiner, Reavis and Woolcock with two hits each. HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS SCOUTING VIRGINIA Virginia is coming off a ACC series win over No. 13 North Carolina. The Cavaliers earned their third conference series win of the season and first since March versus Wake Forest. Matt Thaiss leads the Cavaliers with a blistering.379 averaging, ranking 10th in the ACC. The junior is the Cavalier home run leader with six blasts. Following Thaiss, Ernie Clement sports a.361 average, which stands 16th in the league. The duo stands controls first and second in the ACC hits category. Clement leads the league with 60 base knocks, while ranking 10th nationally. Thaiss stands in second with 55 hits. Pavin Smith paces Virginia with 38 RBIs, good enough for eighth in the league. Seven of Smith s RBIs have came via the sacrifice fly, which ranks second in the country. Ranking second in the land in sac bunts, Virginia has laid down 42. Clement has been one of the best bunters in the country, tallying 13 sac bunts, good enough for second in the category. Virginia is not a threat on the base paths as the Cavaliers have only successfully swiped 17 bags in 30 attempts. Jack Roberts has dominated opposing batters out of the Cavalier bullpen. Roberts has allowed only three earned runs in 15.2 innings of work for a 1.72 ERA. The redshirt sophomore has punched out 21 batters, holding opponents to a.102 batting average. RADFORD ROUNDUP Radford is coming off a three-game Big South series at Winthrop in which the Highlanders went 1-2, falling to 4-8 in conference play. Danny Hrbek went 4 for 10 with three RBIs and one run scored. Hrbek extended his on-base streak to 13 games. After starting the season slow at the plate, Trevor Riggs has caught fire recently. The junior went 5 for 14 with three runs scored, two RBIs, a home run and double in four games last week. Riggs has a four-game hitting streak and 10- game on-base streak. Adam Whitacre has been the go to player off the Highlander bench. In 15 appearances off the bench, Whitacre is 6 for 14 with double, home run and four RBIs. The freshman has scored three runs off the pine. Radford has been involved in 12 one-run contests on the season, possessing a 3-9 record. In the 15-8 win over Winthrop on Saturday, Radford collected season highs in runs (15) and hits (19). The last time Radford scored 15 or more runs in a game came on May 16, 2015, when the Highlanders scored 16 versus UNC Asheville. The Highlanders are 3-4 versus teams from the Commonwealth with eight more contests versus Virginia foes. COUNT ON COLBY Catching fire in the Radford lineup, Colby Higgerson is 14 for 38 over the last seven games. The span has saw four two-hit performances and one three-hit performance. The freshman has eight multi-hit games on the season. Higgerson leads the team with 17 RBIs, driving in 12 over the last 12 contests. In 12 conference games, Higgerson is 13 for 41 with 10 RBIs and five runs scored. With 11 sacrifice bunts, Higgerson leads the Big South and ranks seventh in the country. SWARMER VS. GOLIATH In five starts versus Power Five conferences, Tyler Swarmer has only allowed 11 earned runs in 26.1 innings pitched. The senior southpaw has punched out 15 batters in the five outings. Swarmer is 2-2 in the five starts. Swarmer has been very effective versus left handers, holding batters to a.211 average. With runners on base, opponents are only 18 for 71 against Swarmer. Swarmer is averaging 5.21 strikeouts per game, while averaging 4.22 innings. Highlanders... #BigSouthBase

4 JOE RACCUIA Head Coach :: 9th Season at Radford Joe Raccuia, a 1995 Radford graduate, returned to his roots on July 10, 2007 when he was named the fifth head coach in Radford baseball history. Entering his ninth season as the head man for the Highlanders, a Radford uniform has been a winning fit for Raccuia. Throughout his 12 seasons in a Highlander uniform, Raccuia has been apart of 323 total wins as a player ( ), assistant coach (1996) and head coach (2008-present), better than 47 percent of the program s all-time victories dating back to Raccuia s most successful season in a Radford uniform came during an historic 2015 season as the Highlanders finished with a record, setting a new school record in wins. The season also saw the programs first Big South regular season and conference championships, while earning a trip the NCAA Nashville Regional. In the regional, RU went 2-2, including wins over No. 3 Indiana and No. 4 Lipscomb. RU finished Big South play with a 20-4 record, earning Raccuia the Big South Coach of the Year award. Raccuia becomes only the third RU head coach to earn the honor. Including a record six all-conference selections in 2015, 32 of Raccuia s players have earned all-conference honors. The 2015 squad posted a.289/.386/.425 line, while leading the Big South with 122 doubles and 362 RBI. The Highlander bats were led by Big South first-teamers Josh Gardiner and Patrick Marshall. Gardiner narrowly missed the Big South batting title, finishing second with a.368 average, while leading the league with a.451 on-base percentage. Marshall led the conference and set a new RU single-season record with 59 RBI. Big South second team member Hunter Higgerson finished with 25 doubles, leading the Big South and setting a new RU season record. Higgerson finished second behind Marshall in RBI, driving in 53 runs. Shane Johnsonbaugh earned Big South second team honors after leading RU in hits (76), runs scored (50) and walks (38). Radford can attest their 2015 success to their pitching staff and bullpen. The Highlanders finished with a 3.95 ERA, a new single-season record. The Highlanders only allowed 276 runs, their lowest since the 2000 season. Big South First Team member, Ryan Meisinger was named a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award after leading the NCAA in saves with 17. Meisinger finished his career with a 2.60 ERA, a new RU career mark. Michael Boyle earned Big South First Team honors after leading the Big South in wins (10) and finishing second in innings pitched (105.1). With the 10 wins, Boyle became the first Highlander to lead the league in wins, while setting a new RU single-season record. The 2015 senior class concluded their careers with a overall record, the most wins for a four-year class in program history. The group led RU to three consecutive 30-plus win seasons. Getting players to the professional ranks has been a staple for Raccuia during his time as the headman at RU. Raccuia has oversaw 10 players drafted in the MLB First Year Player Draft, with two players signing non-drafted free agent contracts. In 2012, Eddie Butler was the 46th overall selection of the Colorado Rockies in the draft - the highest draft selection in Radford University program history and the first Big South Conference player to be selected in the draft s first round. On June 6, 2014, Butler became the third Radford player to make it to the big leagues with his MLB debut for the Colorado Rockies. Raccuia s success has come both on and off the field of play, including facilities, player development, recruiting and academics. On his watch, two major baseball facilities have opened: the on-campus hitting facility and RU Baseball Stadium. The stadium, which opened on April 8, 2011, became the cornerstone of Radford s program thanks in part to Raccuia s extensive fund-raising and planning efforts. The project went from conception in the Fall of 2010, to completion during the 2011 season as a result of his work. Raccuia also spearheaded the work done to the playing surface and dugouts in time for the 2010 season. All of the improvements to the facilities marked the first major capital upgrades since Raccuia s playing days at RU. On the academic side, the program has earned several honors under Raccuia. The 2008 season saw Alex Gregory collect the second Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in program history. During the Raccuia reign, RU has placed six players on the Big South All-Academic Team and two on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
