3 BY THE NUMBERS 8 Eight of Radford s 15 home runs have came as the first run of the game for the Highlanders. 58 Trevor Riggs ranks 58th in the country with four sacrifice flies. Riggs stands in fourth place in the Big South. 82 Opposing teams have scored 82 runs in the final three innings on 105 hits. Opponents have combined for 14 doubles and eight home runs. LAST MEETING (March 19, 2013) Radford rallied for two runs in the ninth and brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but George Mason held on for a 5-4 victory Tuesday at Spuhler Field. RU (10-9, 2-1) stranded a pair of runners in its final at bat as Shane Johnsonbaugh flew out to left field with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. The runners were the 11th and 12th stranded by the Highlanders on the afternoon. Trailing 5-2 entering the top of the last, Josh Gardiner led off with a standup double to right center. Josh Reavis followed with a base on balls, and Jeff Kemp extended his hitting steak to seven games with an RBI single. Zach Woolcock delivered a one-out RBI single to cut the Mason lead to 5-4, but the Highlanders could not push across the tying run. The Highlanders failed to take advantage of sloppy play by the Patriots the early innings. In the third inning alone, GMU committed three fielding errors, and RU did not come up with a run in the inning. In the fourth, the Highlanders missed a chance to score when Woolcock was thrown out at the plate on a safety squeeze play. George Mason (10-10) answered those missed opportunities for RU with a four-run fourth inning stringing together four extra base hits in the inning. RU answered back in the fifth with two runs on RBI singles by Woolcock and Alexander Lee. Lee finished the day 3-5, and Woolcock was 2-4 as they were the only Highlanders to record multiple hits. GMU added an insurance run in the fifth that turned out to be the difference in the game. Six of the Patriots 10 base hits on the day went for extra bases (5 doubles, 1 triple). Dylan Nelson (2-2) took the loss for the Highlanders. He went 3.2 innings and gave up four earned runs with a walk and a strikeout. Michael Bowie earned the win for GMU. HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS SCOUTING GEORGE MASON George Mason snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-5 victory over James Madison in an 11-inning titanic struggle on Tuesday night. Kent Blackstone gave the Patriots the win with a walk off RBI single, scoring Caleb Walls from second base. Blackstone provides the power in the Patriot offense, leading the squad with five home runs, nine doubles, 24 RBIs and 33 hits. Garett Driscoll leads the offense with a.268 batting average, while stringing together a slugging percentage of.493 and a.430 on-base percentage. Not registering enough bats to be considered the leader in batting average, Brady Acker sports a.352 average in 54 at bats. Opposing teams have had their way on the base paths, racking up 54 steals in 68 attempts. Zach Mort has been the lone bright spot out of the Patriot bullpen, posting a 3-2 record and a 3.28 ERA in 16 appearances. Opponents are hitting. 195 off of Mort. George Mason ranks tied for third in fielding percentage among A-10 teams. The Patriots have committed 44 errors for a.968 percentage. The Patriots are 3-4 against teams from the Commonwealth. RADFORD ROUNDUP Radford dropped a 11-3 decision to Virginia on Tuesday night in the first meeting between the two foes since With the loss, the Highlanders fall to 3-5 against Commonwealth opponents. Danny Hrbek led the Highlanders with a 2 for 4 effort at the plate. Hrbek extended his on-base streak to 14 games, collecting his 16th multi-hit performance With his RBI single in the top of the first, Hrbek has six RBIs in 11 opportunities with a runner on third and less than two outs. NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS Several Highlanders have found success against non-conference opponents this season. Trevor Riggs has faired well versus non-conference opponents, driving in 12 of his 16 RBIs. Posting some of his best offensive stats in non-conference games, Shane Johnsonbaugh has totaled four home runs, six doubles and 12 RBIs. The senior has swiped four bags in five attempts. Radford s weekend rotation has combined for a 3.30 ERA versus non-conference batters, allowing 29 earned runs in 79.1 innings pitched. Mitchell MacKeith has a 2-1 record with a 3.15 ERA, while Zack Ridgely follows with a 1-2 record and a 3.19 ERA. In 11 appearances versus non-conference foes, Travis McQueen has tallied 28 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. SOUTHPAW STRUGGLES Highlander batters will face two left-handers from George Mason s rotation. RU is 63 for 89 versus portpaws. Danny Hrbek leads the way with a.342 average (13-38) against left-handers. Chris Coia (.310) and Kyle Butler (.400) have found some success against leftys. Coia is 9 for 29 and Butler is 6 for 15. Struggling in the matchup, Luke Wise has only managed three hits in 28 at bats. COIA ETCHING NAME IN BOOKS Chris Coia has started in 205 of his 206 games played during his four-year career as a Highlander. The 206 games played ranks fourth all-time in program history. Coia only needs 12 games to set a new program record. Coia ranks third in most times hit by pitch with 32. A perfect 8 for 8 in stolen base attempts this season, Coia ranks seventh all-time with 49 steals. Highlanders... #BigSouthBase

4 JOE RACCUIA Head Coach :: 9th Season at Radford Joe Raccuia, a 1995 Radford graduate, returned to his roots on July 10, 2007 when he was named the fifth head coach in Radford baseball history. Entering his ninth season as the head man for the Highlanders, a Radford uniform has been a winning fit for Raccuia. Throughout his 12 seasons in a Highlander uniform, Raccuia has been apart of 323 total wins as a player ( ), assistant coach (1996) and head coach (2008-present), better than 47 percent of the program s all-time victories dating back to Raccuia s most successful season in a Radford uniform came during an historic 2015 season as the Highlanders finished with a record, setting a new school record in wins. The season also saw the programs first Big South regular season and conference championships, while earning a trip the NCAA Nashville Regional. In the regional, RU went 2-2, including wins over No. 3 Indiana and No. 4 Lipscomb. RU finished Big South play with a 20-4 record, earning Raccuia the Big South Coach of the Year award. Raccuia becomes only the third RU head coach to earn the honor. Including a record six all-conference selections in 2015, 32 of Raccuia s players have earned all-conference honors. The 2015 squad posted a.289/.386/.425 line, while leading the Big South with 122 doubles and 362 RBI. The Highlander bats were led by Big South first-teamers Josh Gardiner and Patrick Marshall. Gardiner narrowly missed the Big South batting title, finishing second with a.368 average, while leading the league with a.451 on-base percentage. Marshall led the conference and set a new RU single-season record with 59 RBI. Big South second team member Hunter Higgerson finished with 25 doubles, leading the Big South and setting a new RU season record. Higgerson finished second behind Marshall in RBI, driving in 53 runs. Shane Johnsonbaugh earned Big South second team honors after leading RU in hits (76), runs scored (50) and walks (38). Radford can attest their 2015 success to their pitching staff and bullpen. The Highlanders finished with a 3.95 ERA, a new single-season record. The Highlanders only allowed 276 runs, their lowest since the 2000 season. Big South First Team member, Ryan Meisinger was named a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year award after leading the NCAA in saves with 17. Meisinger finished his career with a 2.60 ERA, a new RU career mark. Michael Boyle earned Big South First Team honors after leading the Big South in wins (10) and finishing second in innings pitched (105.1). With the 10 wins, Boyle became the first Highlander to lead the league in wins, while setting a new RU single-season record. The 2015 senior class concluded their careers with a overall record, the most wins for a four-year class in program history. The group led RU to three consecutive 30-plus win seasons. Getting players to the professional ranks has been a staple for Raccuia during his time as the headman at RU. Raccuia has oversaw 10 players drafted in the MLB First Year Player Draft, with two players signing non-drafted free agent contracts. In 2012, Eddie Butler was the 46th overall selection of the Colorado Rockies in the draft - the highest draft selection in Radford University program history and the first Big South Conference player to be selected in the draft s first round. On June 6, 2014, Butler became the third Radford player to make it to the big leagues with his MLB debut for the Colorado Rockies. Raccuia s success has come both on and off the field of play, including facilities, player development, recruiting and academics. On his watch, two major baseball facilities have opened: the on-campus hitting facility and RU Baseball Stadium. The stadium, which opened on April 8, 2011, became the cornerstone of Radford s program thanks in part to Raccuia s extensive fund-raising and planning efforts. The project went from conception in the Fall of 2010, to completion during the 2011 season as a result of his work. Raccuia also spearheaded the work done to the playing surface and dugouts in time for the 2010 season. All of the improvements to the facilities marked the first major capital upgrades since Raccuia s playing days at RU. On the academic side, the program has earned several honors under Raccuia. The 2008 season saw Alex Gregory collect the second Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in program history. During the Raccuia reign, RU has placed six players on the Big South All-Academic Team and two on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
