Friday will be Justin Malone s final home start, one of the most accomplished players in program history. A former Freshman All-American and All-CAA honoree, Malone (1-2, 5.07 this season) stands in the top five of four different school categories including career saves (14, first), appearances (70, second), win percentage (.765, third) and ERA (4.17, tied for third). He has also appeared 76 times in the field, seeing action at shortstop with 20 career RBIs at the plate. Malone will be matched against Blue Hens senior right-hander Eric Young (5-4, 5.22). Saturday Ben Marshall (5-5, 3.33) will make his last start at the GSU Baseball Complex, opposite Delaware senior right-hander Corey Crispell (5-3, 3.73). Marshall has made 48 career appearances on the mound, just shy of the school s top 10. He owns three saves and flourished this year in a starting role, throwing three complete games and twice earning CAA Pitcher of the Week honors in a team-leading 78.1 innings. Tyler Claburn (4-2, 7.81) takes the hill for the final time at home on Sunday, matching up with Blue Hens sophomore right-hander Chad Kuhl (3-4, 4.77). Claburn has made 28 appearances in his two seasons at GSU and is second on the squad this year with four victories. SENIOR EFFORTS At the plate, seniors Kolowich and Williams headline the offensive attack once more this season. The pair has combined for 36 extra-base hits on the year, including 13 home runs. Wood is third on the team with 31 RBIs and has added five homers. Meanwhile, Bennett has swung a red-hot base as of late, with two hits in four straight games as his average approaches the.300 mark. He tied a personal best with three RBIs in Tuesday s 13-8 win at UNC Asheville. Blaustein is tied for the team lead with five sacrifice bunts this season while Shivers is third on the squad with five stolen bases. Dyer, a preseason All-American, is one of three Panthers with multiple saves this season. This weekend will be the Panthers first time hosting the Blue Hens since Senior right-hander Nick Squeglia was also part of GSU s 2009 CAA title team, but has one more year of eligibility next season after having Tommy John surgery in the winter. The team is under Greg Frady against league opponents in his six years. BENNETT STREAKING Senior outfielder Landon Bennett has come on strong in the second half of his lone season with the squad. He now has a.298 batting average after piling up two hits in each of the last four games. He has eight multiple-hit games this season in 23 starts, 37 total games. A former punter on the Wofford football team, Bennett played baseball at WC as well after a local two-sport career at Greater Atlanta Christian. SARRATT SLOWS RUNNING GAME Junior catcher Scott Sarratt leads the CAA by throwing out 21 baserunners this season from behind the plate. His hot streak began last month at Hofstra. Facing a Pride club that led the nation with 3.20 stolen bases per game, the Statesboro, Ga., native threw out six of eight runners in two starts. Only Dalton Rouleau, who stood 13th in the nation in steals/gm, was able to swipe two bags against Sarratt. In his first season since transferring from Georgia Perimeter College, Sarratt has thrown out 21 of 54 runners stealing against him this year, and a stellar 17 of 36 in conference play. CLOSE PLAY The Panthers have experienced more than their fair share of close games in 2012, with 23 games being decided by two runs or less. Fourteen games have come down to just one run. GSU is 8-6 in one-run games (2-1 in extra innings) and 3-6 in two-run games. In fact, six of the Panthers 11 CAA wins have been by just one run. Only nine of GSU s 58 games last season were decided by one run. CADEN VOYAGE Freshman shortstop Caden Bailey has shined so far in his first season with the Panthers. The all-region selection out of Lambert HS (Suwanee, Ga.) has 49 hits- third-most on the team- in 47 games played. His.316 batting average is second-best among regular Panther starters. Also counted on as a regular up the middle, Bailey has started 42 of the team s 49 games at shortstop with 24 double plays, the most of any Panther middle infielder. BOWDER POWER Junior walk-on Greg Bowder has made the most of his opportunity on the field this season. The Acworth native picked up two hits, scored twice and drove in two during GSU s stunning 11-run rally against Northeastern to start the CAA slate, and has started 20 games since. The utility infielder has 29 hits in 88 at-bats (.330) with 37 total bases in 38 games. Bowder has played second base, third base and shortstop. GOING FOR THREE Freshman Kody Adams is tied for fourth in the league with four triples this year, part of his 17 extra-base hits. The outfielder from Williamson, Ga., would need five more to tie the school record for most triples in a season, held by two players, most recently Justin Newman in Newman s 13 career triples are also a program record. DYER BACK TO THE PEN NCBWA Preseason All-American and Stopper of the Year Watch List honoree Jake Dyer started five games to begin the season, but was shifted back to the bullpen with GSU thin due to injuries on the back end. He has made 14 bullpen appearances with three saves and a 5.19 ERA, striking out 18 in 26.0 innings pitched. He had been 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA as a starter. Dyer went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA and eight saves in the bullpen in 2011, two saves shy of the school single-season record. He helped the team to a 33-0 record when leading after 8 innings. CATCHER COMBOS The Panthers have deployed three different starting catchers this season- all in their first year with the program- in junior college transfers Landon Anderson and Scott Sarratt and true freshman Joel Van Asch. While Anderson started the season opener, Van Asch made 11 starts behind the plate before being used primarily in left field. Sarratt has earned 20 starts at catcher, including 11 of the last 14 games. Anderson has appeared in 24 games with 14 starts. Here are some statistics of the Panther rally, which claimed headlines around the nation: -14 batters sent to the plate -9 hits (three shy of NCAA ninth-inning record) -3 walks; no players reached on error -2 players had two hits apiece -2 players had first career hits (Prescott, Bowder) -4 players reached base on two-strike counts (including walk-off hit) FIRST THINGS FIRST Starting with the March 20 game against Alabama State, the Panthers went on a streak of scoring in the first inning of seven consecutive games. GSU plated six runs in the first inning against the Hornets, then did it again in their next game against JMU. The next four games the Panthers scored one run in the first, then scored three times in game two against George Mason in the opening frame. The series finale with the Patriots finally stopped the streak, when GSU had two hits in the first inning but did not push a run across. The Panthers have scored in the first inning of 19 games, going 12-7 in those contests. 5 Georgia State Baseball Notes, Page 5 LEAN ON ME Senior infielder Brandon Williams is the only Panther to start every game this season, making 48 starts at first base and one at third. Only Kody Adams has appeared in all 49 games like Williams, but three times Adams has come off the bench. HOGAN S A HERO Outfielder Mark Hogan came to Georgia State as the school s firstever scholarship football player, and he s now making a splash as a twosport standout. Hogan has starred for two seasons on the gridiron for coach Bill Curry s defense, racking up 110 total tackles, second-most in the program s twoyear history. His father, Mark Sr., also played football for Curry at Georgia Tech. In his first season with the GSU baseball team this year, the redshirtjunior has a.325 average, a.470 slugging percentage and a.446 on-base percentage. Hogan has two homers, four doubles and a triple has earned 23 starts in the Panther lineup. He last played baseball in high school in 2008 and won two state championships with Lincoln-Sudbury High in Massachusetts. DYER NAMED ALL-AMERICAN Senior right-hander Jake Dyer was named to the NCBWA Preseason All-American third team as a reliever to start It is the first such honor in program history as the Conyers native had a standout season as team closer in his first year with the team in Dyer went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA and eight saves, two shy of the school single-season record. He helped the team to a 33-0 record when leading after eight innings. PANTHERS PICKED FOURTH IN CAA Georgia State was picked to finish fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association this season in preseason voting by the league s head coaches, with the Panthers earning two first-place votes. GSU has not finished below fourth since 2008 and is one of just two schools to reach each of the last three CAA tournaments (along with UNC Wilmington). POSTSEASON CHANGES This season, the CAA tournament site shifts to Harrisonburg, Va. and James Madison University s Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park. The allturf field is in its third season as the Duke s home surface and GSU is 2-1 in its brief history playing in the park. The CAA postseason field will also expand to the top six finishers in the league regular season standings, as it was from and PANTHER CHAMPIONS Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park Seven current GSU seniors remain from the school s first-ever CAA championship and NCAA tournament squad in 2009: Daniel Blaustein, Jonathan Kolowich, Justin Malone, Ben Marshall, Nick Squeglia, Brandon Williams and Joey Wood. CORNERING THE MARKET The Panthers boast preseason all-conference players at the corner infield positions in first baseman Williams (.342 avg., 36 RBIs in 2011) and third baseman Drew Shields (.321, 20 RBIs), who anchor the offensive attack. Williams is a four-year Panther who entered the year tied for fourth in school history with a.359 career batting average. Shields earned all-conference DH honors after last year, his first with the team since transferring from junior college. He batted.321 with 20 RBIs and scored 35 runs as a sophomore.
