1 Scouting James Madion: The Dukes (5-3, 2-1 CAA) enter the weekend on a high note after defeating Southeastern Conference opponent Tennessee 10-3 on the road Wednesday afternoon. James Madison opened CAA play last weekend, taking two at home against William & Mary. Offensively, the Dukes rank seventh in the CAA in team batting average (.287). James Madison gets production from numerous sources, as multiple players share the team lead in doubles, triples and home runs. Junior outfielder Matt Townsend leads the attack, hitting.435 (10 th in CAA) with three doubles and six stolen bases. Junior outfielder Matt Sellers ranks second on the team with a.412 average and shares the lead with two home runs. Senior second baseman Joe Lake leads the Dukes with 11 hits, four doubles and nine RBIs. Sophomore utilityman Matt Browning is struggling at the plate after earning Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honors last season and is batting.241 with six RBIs. On the mound, JMU has seen several pitchers share the burden. Junior righty Kurt Houck (0-1, 5.91 ERA, 10.2 IP), junior lefty Justin Wood (0-0, 5.87 ERA, 7.2 IP) and sophomore right-hander Kyle Hoffman (1-0, 4.26 ERA, 12.2) are expected to start for the Dukes this weekend. Houck leads the staff with a.263 opponents batting average and has not given up a homer this season. Despite two nodecisions, Wood has not lasted more than four innings in his two starts. Hoffman leads the team in innings pitched, ranks fifth with seven strikeouts, and is the only starter to earn a win this year. The Dukes have gotten a strong performance from their bullpen, as freshmen Turner Phelps (2-0, 3.48 ERA, 10.1 IP) and Trevor Knight (2-1, 7.50, 6.0 IP) lead the team with two wins. Series Notes: James Madison leads the all-time series 8-2, including a 6-1 advantage since Georgia State started play in the CAA in The Dukes also hold a 4-2 lead in games played at Panthersville, taking both series 2-1 in 2006 and Last Time Out for the Panthers: Georgia State (9-1, 0-0 CAA) split its mid-week series against Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech, dropping the opener 13-7 on Tuesday and winning the finale 8-6 on Wednesday. Chase Childers paced the Panther attack, going 4-for-6 in the two-game set and narrowly missed hitting for the cycle on Tuesday (single, double and triple). Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas went 4-for-8 during the two games with four singles. State also got contributions from Matt Van Horn (3-for-5 on Wednesday with an RBI and run scored), Mitch Rider (2-for-5 on Tuesday with two doubles and two RBIs) and Mike McCree (2- for-4 on Tuesday with two RBIs). The Panther pitching staff had some struggles on Tuesday, but reliever Joel Reeves provided State with a bright spot. The junior rigthy tossed three hitless, scoreless innings against Tennessee Tech to keep State in the game late. Wednesday was a different story, as starter Adam Knight went five innings and gave up two earned runs. The bullpen was strong Wednesday, as John Locklear, Will Palmer and Robert Hasenfelt all threw scoreless innings of relief. Closer David Ferrer gave up three unearned runs, but closed out the game with a caught-looking strikeout. League Leaders: Five Panthers rank in the top five of the CAA in several offensive categories. Chase Childers and Jean-Michel Rochon-Salvas rank 1 st (.571) and 4 th (.486) in batting. Childers ranks 4 th (15) in runs scored while Rochon-Salvas is tied for 3 rd (17) in hits. Derek Simmons is tied for 1 st with seven doubles. Nick Hogan leads the league with three triples while Dusty Bennett is tied for 2 nd with two. Common Threads: JMU volunteer assistant Josiah Jones competed against State video coordinator Cliff Ford in the America Southwest Conference, as Jones played at East Texas Baptist University ( ) while Ford played at the University of the Ozarks ( ).
