1 GAME DAY INFORMATION Ron Tonkin Field 4460 NW 229th Ave. Hillsboro, OR Class-A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks HILLSBORO HOPS AT SPOKANE INDIANS: GAME 3 OF 76 Friday, June 20, :30 PM Avista Stadium, Spokane, Washington Season Record (1-1) Road Record (1-1) LHP CODY REED (0-0, 0.00) VS. LHP JOE PALUMBO (0-0, 0.00) TONIGHT: Hillsboro sends LHP Cody Reed to the mound to make his Hops debut. Reed is the highest draft pick presently on the roster, selected in the 2nd round of the 2014 draft out of Ardmore High School in Alabama. He will be opposed by Spokane LHP Joe Palumbo, who will be making his first ever start above extended spring training vs. SPOKANE: The Hops enjoyed success against the Indians last year, posting an 8-2 record. They took four out of five games in Spokane from 7/30-8/3, and again took four out of five in Hillsboro from 8/20-8/24. The Hops own a 15-5 record all time against the Indians. A LATIN FLAIR: The Hops opening-day roster has a strong Latin presence. Eight players hail from the Dominican Republic: RHP Ariel Hernandez, RHP Carlos Hernandez, RHP Jose Martinez, RHP Jeferson Mejia, IF Sergio Alcantara, IF Raymel Flores, IF Fernery Ozuna, and OF Luis Veras. There are also two Venezuelans on the roster: hitting coach Javier Colina and C Jose Queliz. FIVE FRIENDLY FACES: Five players from Hillsboro s championship run return to the Hops in 2015: LHP Jared Miller, RHP Mike Cetta, C Nate Irving, IF Galli Cribbs and UT Nate Robertson. Miller started the season at Long-A Kane County, where he struggled early, while all the others remained in extended spring training until the Short-Season clubs began play. ANOTHER STACKED COACHING STAFF: The 2014 Hillsboro Hops had one of the best coaching staffs across Minor League Baseball, with J.R. House at the helm, Doug Drabek as the pitching coach, Mark Grace as the hitting coach, and Ben Petrick as a special consultant. Drabek and Petrick will reprise their roles with the Hops in 2015, while House has been promoted to run the Advanced-A Visalia Rawhide, who have already won the first half of the California League. Mark Grace was promoted to assistant hitting coach with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Taking over for Grace this year is Javier Colina, a 14-year minor-league veteran. Shelley Duncan takes over for the Hops in his first experience as a manager at any level. LAST NIGHT: The Hops claimed their first victory of the 2015 season, as the bats came alive in a 10-3 Hillsboro victory. It was the first career managerial victory for new skipper Shelley Duncan. In his return to Hillsboro, LHP Jared Miller was dominant, setting a new career high in strikeouts with 9, while allowing one earned run over six innings. GETTING THEIR FEET WET: Three of Arizona s first five selections in this year s First-Year Player Draft will begin their careers in the Northwest League with the Hillsboro Hops: 3 rd round selection RHP Taylor Clarke, 4 th round RHP Breckin Williams, and 5 th round RHP Ryan Burr. First and second round selections, IF Dansby Swanson (Vanderbilt, and LHP Alex Young (Texas Christian), are still with their college teams competing in the College World Series, and have yet to sign professional contracts. Vanderbilt eliminated TCU in the College World Series last night with a 7-1 victory. POWER IN A SMALL PACKAGE: Though standing just 5 8 tall and checking in at 170 pounds, IF Fernery Ozuna packs a punch. He hit a no-doubt 3- run home run last night to salt the game away for the Hops. Surprised? You shouldn t be. Ozuna hit 7 home runs in 73 games with Rookie League Missoula last year. The team high for Hillsboro last year was 6 (Gonzalez, Cron, Parr, and Trahan.) ON THE AIR: Hops games can be heard live on Rip City Radio 620 AM in Portland, and online at Mobile listeners should download the iheartradio app. Tonight s pregame show begins at 6:00. Matt Richert will call the action. 12 HOPS WIN FIRST-HALF SOUTH DIVISION PENNANT 1ST-HALF FINAL STANDINGS OPENING NIGHT OUCH, part 1: Hillsboro dropped a heartbreaker in the season-opener at Everett leading 3-1 going to the bottom of the 7th, Everett scored 1 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th to win 4-3. BUT NICE RECOVERY, part 1: After the opening night loss, Hillsboro won the next four at Everett, 3-2, 3-0, 7-3 and 5-3. The 3-0 win featured a franchise-record 12 Ks by LHP Anderson Placido. OPENING NIGHT OUCH, part 2: Having won 4 straight at Everett, Hillsboro scored five runs in the bottom of the 1st in the home-opener against Salem-Keizer... but lost 8-6 in front of a sellout crowd. SS Justin Gonzalez, in his first AB at the newly renamed Ron Tonkin Field, became just the second Hop (after Zach Esquerra in 2013) to hit one over the hitters' backdrop in straightaway CF, a two-run HR. BUT NICE RECOVERY, part 2: The Hops then won the next two games over Salem- Keizer, on June 19-20, 4-3 and 2-1. HUH?!? OHHH... OKAY. YEP, THAT'LL DO IT: LHP Anderson Placido, after his 12-K performance, was the reigning NWL pitcher of the week... when he was released by the Diamondbacks organization on June 28. Placido admitted stealing money from a teammate. TAKING THE REINS: The Hops were never more than a game behind at any point in the first half, nor were they ever worse than a tie for second. Hillsboro was a game out of first after each of the first three games of the season. They moved into a tie for first on the fourth day of the year, and moved into sole possession of first with exactly one week gone. Their largest lead was 4 games (July 1-3). JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU'RE IN... Hillsboro held sole possession of first place for 29 straight days, until losing at home 4-3 to Tri-City on July 18, with three days remaining in the half. Boise had pulled even. The good news was this: the Hops held the tiebreaker [Hillsboro and Boise had split their six first-half meetings, but the Hops (10-8) had a better in-division record than Boise (9-9)]. However, the Hops had to go on the road to Eugene, while red-hot Boise who had just taken 4 of 5 from the first-half's best team, Spokane, and Boise was on fire offensively was at home for three against Salem-Keizer. JUST WHEN YOU THINK YOU'RE OUT... The Hops squeaked out consecutive 3-2 wins in Eugene on July 19-20, and when Boise surprisingly lost at home to Salem-Keizer (Salem-Keizer's Jose Reyes allowed just one hit in 8 innings in a 6-1 win), the Hops had won the 1st-half South Division crown on the next-to-last day of the half, securing Hillsboro's first-ever playoff berth. The Hops finished the 1st half 22-16, tied with Boise, and were declared 1st-half champs because of the tiebreaker. QUALITY: 14 times in 38 1st-half games Hillsboro starters went at least six innings and allowed 3 or fewer ER. The starters' ERA in the first half was 3.25, led by Ryan Doran at 2.66 and Ben Eckels at The bullpen's ERA was Eckels led the league in K's with 52, while Doran's 38 K's ranked 7th. The staff's 3.62 ERA was third in the league, just 0.11 behind league-leading Vancouver. TIMING IS EVERYTHING: Hillsboro finished 4th in the 1st half in team batting avg. (.252), and tied w/vancouver for last in HR (14). But the Hops went 9-7 in one-run games, and 15-9 in games decided by one or two runs. They needed two more wins to make the postseason. EXCITING STUFF: The Hops played 27 one-run games in 2013, the most in the NWL. They were in those games. He had more hits than any other major leaguer during the decade of the '90s. Ben Petrick enters his second season as Hops' special consultant. The Hillsboro native spent parts of five seasons in the bigs ( ) with Colorado and Detroit. His career was cut short by Parkinsons, and he is an active voice in the search for a cure.
