1 Volume 41, Issue 3 March 2014 Activities Report from Tad Carter As I write this, we are 6 weeks into 2014 and my navigator and I are making great progress in spotting license plates, landing Tennessee, Iowa and Hawaii earlier this afternoon. That makes 31 states and one Canadian province checked off the list. If you haven t picked up your 2014 TMGC Event Passport yet, get with me [Date] the next meeting. You ll have a full list of club events, local and national shows, the State Plate contest and more. And where, you may ask, is the next meeting? We ll be at the Bayside Recreation Center at 4500 First Court Rd in VB on Wednesday, March 5 th. As tends to happen at off-site meetings, things will be a little different to accommodate the hours of the facility and to make up for the lack of a driveway in which to kick tyres. We re trying something new with Movie Night. We ll have pizza, popcorn, and assorted movie food starting at 6:45, with the movie starting at 7pm. All I can say is it will be rated PG. Our March drive will be the first annual Tidewater Brew Cruise on Saturday the 15th. As highlighted in the Virginian Pilot, the Daily Press and Great Neck Life, we are in the midst of a boom in the local microbrewery market. Today, we visit three of the newest tasting rooms. We ll gather in Chesapeake (10:00 - Hardee s 1029 N. Battlefield Blvd.) and take a back-road drive to our first stop at the brand new tasting room at Beach Brewing (Grand Opening 2/8/14). From there, it is off to lunch at Beach Bully BBQ, a Tidewater favorite since Next stop the brand newer tasting room at Back Bay Brewing. They are under construction right now, but will welcome us in March. Our hosts are owners Charlie Burroughs and Josh Canada. And then we have one more stop at Young Veterans Brewing Company (opened 11/13), with host Tom Wilder. As always, an RSVP is appreciated, but let your thirst for beer guide travel plans for the day. For those scheduled to run the Shamrock Marathon consider this to be carbo-loading. Also in March are the Tidewater AACA Swap Meet (3/1 - Chesapeake Ruritan Club Battlefield Blvd. South) and the Richmond AACA Swap Meet (3/8 Belmont Recreation Center 1600 Hilliard Rd). We start to get busy in April. Our first Tech Session is on Sunday the 6 th at Linse s in Norfolk. The following weekend, we have the Williamsburg British Car Show and our trip to Go Ape both in Williamsburg and both on the 12 th. We ll see how sign-up plays out to see if we will continue to offer Go Ape. As the first day of Spring Break, it might be a fun family outing. And at the end of the month, we have the 12 th annual Virginia Wine Tour hosted by Alan and Beckey. If you aren t already signed up for this outstanding trip, check with them right away as space is capped to accommodate winery limitations. Other things on the horizon Norfolk Tides Baseball 5/13 British Car Week Dessert Drives 5/28 and 5/29

3 Glass Tour Recap By Jim Villers Get Fired Up! That is the motto of the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio that the TMGC visited on Saturday, February 15. What a pleasant surprise to walk in from the dreary cold rain of the parking lot to a warm glass studio with 2000 degree furnaces glowing bright orange and radiating the warmth of a July beach day. The Glass Studio was established in 2012 as an educational extension of the Chrysler Museum and offers classes to the public in a variety of art glass techniques. Tour director Tad Carter had reserved the first two spectator rows for TMGC members and we filled the two rows and more. Josh, our entertaining host, began his demonstration by explaining the furnaces the 2500 degree kiln containing four to five hundred pounds of clear glass waiting to be worked; the "glory hole" where artists can heat and reheat glass as it was worked; the holding kiln where colored glass is stored at 1000 degrees until needed. He also showed us some of the characteristics of glass by blowing a glass bubble until it was as thin and flexible as cellophane and stretching a glass fiber across the studio until it resembled a fiber optic thread. Josh then made a multi colored table vase by starting with a blob of clear glass, adding colors, adding more glass, working it with wooden cups, stretching it with metal tongs and constantly reheating it to maintain the proper workability. What a truly interesting demonstration like magic in glass. The Sunset Grill for lunch was next. Another interesting surprise; a small casual spot located on the first floor of the harbormaster's office in Willoughby Harbor. Seating was a bit tight for our larger than anticipated group, but everyone eventually found a seat. The menu and preparation exceeded expectations; our table had Fat Tire beer on draft and brie with smoked oysters which arrived on a sizzling skillet with garlic wine sauce and fresh flour tortilla chips. Two very interesting destinations on a cold, rainy day. 32 members and guests were able to chalk up another memorable day with TMGC! 3

4 Tech Tip John Terschak recently told us about his experience with a parts plater. John had a variety of MGA parts and fasteners replated by a company that works on a bulk basis at reasonable prices. If any TMGC members would like to pool their parts for a future order, please let John know of your interest. The pictures below will give you an idea of the excellent results that John has seen. Membership Update by Bill Yoshida 2014 Memberships: As of 24 February we have 112 paid memberships. There are 201 individuals in the club. Follow up to last month s membership report Since I have not received 2014 dues from the three memberships that had Promised to renew, I have now removed them from the 2014 roster. New Members: Randy Semones Norfolk, VA MGB (Thanks to Tad Carter for signing Randy up at the February meeting!) Sam & Cynthia Earl Newport News, VA MGA Roadster Tom & Deborah Curran Virginia Beach, VA MGB-GT Cars & Types: 174 total cars, as follows: Fasteners back from the plating shop MGAs & Coupes: 25 MGBs & GTs: 96 MGCs & GTs: 3 T series: 32 Midgets: 11 Others: 7 Dues: Tad Carter collected $10 in dues for turn over to Jim Villers. I currently hold $30 in dues checks for turnover tojim Villers. The Dipstick is the official publication of Tidewater MG Classics (TMGC). With over 200 members, we provide homes for one of the largest concentrations of MGs in the Western Hemisphere. 5 04 February 2014 TMGCC Meeting Minutes submitted by Bruce Easley President Steve LaPaugh opened the meeting at Eastside Pizza in Portsmouth, first asking if there were any guests or new members. Two MG ers qualified: Ralph Fulp, who has a 1977 Yellowish MGB Roadster, and Randy Semones, who bought his 77 B Roadster sight unseen in Sarasota while living in New Orleans, then drove that baby back to the Big Easy. Ray Hicks, who hasn t been with us in a while, was back! The January minutes were approved, and we moved on to the VP s comments. Robert discussed a possible survey to elicit feedback from members regarding club functions and activities. If you have any thoughts on the conduction of such a survey, or comments regarding the club s activities, get in touch with Mr. Perrone. There were no Treasurer s report or Membership report at the meeting, those officers not being present. Tad Carter discussed activities, noting that if you want to know what s hot in Tidewater, read it first in the Dipstick. It seems that where we have gatherings (Phantomworks, Brew Cruise, etc.) those locations wind up in the local press. He listed some of the many upcoming activities, with a reminder that RSVPs are always appreciated, since it helps Tad and the venue anticipate the amount of space or service needed. Our Historian, Sue Bond, said everyone should have received a CD of the Christmas Brunch presentation, showing many of the club s events of the past. David Kinsey told the group that he had met and befriended Hank Snow, a local antique car "legend" during a visit to Boykins, VA. It turns out that Hank was the person who sponsored Terry Bond into the national Antique Automobile Club of America back in Little did he realize at that time Terry would eventually become the National club President. They have been friends for a long time! Hank was also responsible for creation of the Boykins Museum, which was the original Boykins railroad station. Thanks to Hank's efforts, it and its contents will be preserved forever. Hank recently passed away, and because of the TMGC connection with Terry Bond, there are improved opportunities for the sale of some of Hank's estate items in order to offset his nursing home expenses. The estate includes antique car parts, and a Model A and Model T Ford. Both David and Terry we very glad to have played a role in the outcome and the TMGC connection was instrumental. The Davidoski Dipstick team confirmed that the TMGCC meeting made it into the newspaper, as promised. It s on the Friday edition auto news page. David Kinsey held the regalia raffle, including an MG clock, MG Driver Tech issue, T shirt, MG fridge magnet, Speckled Hen bottle opener, and one more LICENSE PLATE HOLDER. He announced Morbi turpis libero, he also pretium has some vitae, T shirts, MG blankets and jackets in stock for purchase at surprisingly reasonable imperdiet ut, prices. dictum consequat, odio. 6 March 15th, Tidewater Brew Cruise Tidewater Brew Cruise Did you hear that? A nation-wide explosion is taking place in the craft beer industry,. The emphasis has shifted from quantity to quality and brewers are t ak i ng advant age of local flavors to produce unique variations on the drink of kings. In Virginia alone, there are over 60 microbreweries (those producing less than 15,000 barrels of beer annually). You can choose the regional Nelson 151, Red, W hite and Brew or Brew Ridge Tours. You can make it a theme and pick up your growler at Bad Wolf, Wild Wolf and Wolf Hills breweries. Or stick around Hampton Roads and enjoy some of our 10 local microbreweries, and be home with your growler before sunset. Today, we visit Beach, Back Bay and Young Veterans Breweries in Virginia Beach, where you can check out a sample flight, or relax with one of your choice. And save room in your car and take home your favorites by the bottle, grenade (32oz) or growler (64oz). 3/15/2014 D et ai ls 10:00 M eet at H ardee s, N.
