1 USA Junior Beach Tour Qualifiers are coming to Chicago on two separate occasions June 7 th and July 19 th. Both are at Montrose Beach and you can sign up at Page 4 Hello Beach Volleyball Enthusiasts, It is the first week of April and we have a few days that will reach 60 degrees. I m sure everyone has hopes this is the official start to spring and warm weather. Indoor club season is in full swing but there are handfuls of juniors preparing for their sand game as well. Some are traveling to warmer areas, other are training indoor at sand facilities and still others are focused on strength and conditioning to prepare for the demands. This newsletter has a list of local tournaments that can keep a sand player busy all summer long. Chicago is an amazing area to compete and have fun in sand and sun. Please note the first event coming to our area is the USA High Performance Beach Tryouts on May 23 rd. In years past 2-3 beach college coaches are in attendance and running the event. Anna Collier of USC is awesome and really takes time to teach aspects of the beach game. Please notify anyone interested of this opportunity. We will be hosting 2 USA Junior Beach Qualifiers in Chicago. The first is on June 7 th. Sign ups are accepted NOW! 4 Questions and Answers Q: What is the USA Junior Beach Tour? A: This is the beach equivalent to the USAV Junior Nationals. The USA JBT host qualifying events all summer across the nation. If you finish in the top 3 or 4 of a Bid event you will qualify for a bid into the national tournament. Trickle down bids are also awarded. This year s national event is held July in Virginia Beach, VA. Q: How do I find a Partner? A: The easiest way to find a partner is to join a club. Almost one third of the indoor volleyball club programs are not offering a beach division. By joining you have access to a larger group of potential partners. If you do not have the option of joining a club program, I suggest contacting the tournament director of a specific event and asking if there are any other players looking for partners. Finally you could show up at a tournament and ask around. Q: How do we choose which tournaments to play? A: Beach volleyball is less structured than indoor. Depending if you are part of a club or not you always have the option to sign up for any tournament you would like. There are no rules that limit you from only playing one specific tour or style of events. I suggest selecting which tournaments based on their location, travel, competition and your available dates. Q: How do we register? A: To register yourself and your partner for an event you will need to do some research. Most events have an online registration that you can follow. A few events only require you to the tournament director. Always look for a confirmation and always know the check in time. Most all events have you show up prior to the start time and check in with the director. This helps the event run smoothly. Q: What are the age divisions? A: Most tournaments run with age division of every two years. For example U18, U16, U14 and U12. Teams have the option to play up but not down. If a specific age division has a very small amount of entries the director might combine division to allow for more play. They will notify you of this during check in to allow you a choice. Boys and Girls are typically separate divisions. What are the Uniform Rules? Currently there are no uniform requirements or rules for Junior Beach Volleyball Tournaments No uniform numbers, colors or designs are needed. Most players do like to match their colors or wear their club s logo/design. A typical beach tournament outfit has been spandex with a tank top, t-shirt or sports bra. A few teams recently are wearing swimsuits. It really is what you and your partner choose to be most comfortable in. I would recommend layers, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and sand socks all from protection. 4
