S o u t h e r n N e v a d a C h a p t e r, I n c. # The Director s Saddle J U L Y, Well, we are over the hump! Would you believe we are in July? What are your plans for the long Holiday weekend? Hope there are lots of fireworks in your plans. There was only one ride I wanted to do this year. That is the ride to Monterey, and down the coast. I was lucky enough to grow up not too far from Monterey and the coast; and that part of the coast south of Monterey is one not to miss. Hope to see you on that ride. I wanted to share something with you. I found out one of our members is a fairly talented writer. I was fortunate to be able to get to know John better over the Carson City overnighter. He is a character, and another of our members you should get to know. And now, without further adue, I turn this page over to John Grambo!! Motorcycling Etiquette When & How to Wave I was riding SR 159 near the Red Rock loop, when an approaching Goldwinger gave me a Queen s Wave (twisting his left wrist slightly left and right, with his hand slightly cupped). I nearly fell off my bike, laughing. A Queens Wave! I found this experience so unnerving I failed to return the wave, I just laughed. Continued on Page 2 S.N.H.O.G. 2 Director s Saddle...continued Then, I began to think about biker wave etiquette and wondered why the Road Captains do not include wave instructions with the other hand signals. For that matter, I don t remember any mention of the wave in the basic or advanced rider courses. How could something that happens every time you ride go uninstructed? When is a wave appropriate and what is the proper way to give one? When I got home, I googled and surfed the web, looking for answers, but all I found were more questions. Should I even be a waver, and if so, should I wave first or only return waves? Does it matter what brand or type of bike is approaching and what about those scary hard core bikers with ape hangers? What is the wave protocol for a group of approaching bikes, will one long wave take care of the whole group or are individual waves required? What about on a poker run or bike rally, do you just wave yourself crazy? If you're going to be a waver, you ll have to choose a wave style. The basic wave styles are: the left-handed low wave, straight out and the high wave. There is also the right-handed wave, which says, Hi, I have cruise control. The basic waves have variations which include the extension of any number of fingers, palm direction and motion. The advanced wave options are endless: Two Finger Flip, Four Finger Wiggle, Mini-Wave and on and on. When you are unable to safely wave, it is acceptable to substitute a Head Nod in lieu of a bona fide wave. Here is what I m going to do, until I receive proper instruction: When I give the wave first, I ll use the Peace Sign, low for Harley s and higher for those others. When I m returning another biker s wave, I ll mimic their wave, unless it s a Queen s Wave, in which case, I ll just laugh. ;-) John Grambo And now back to our regularly scheduled Directors Saddle. With the weather getting hotter, we are changing gears a little. On the 10th, we are moving into the Fireside Bowling Alley. We will be starting at 11:00 am, but get there early to get your shoes and meet your team members. Troy Palmer will attempt to retain his Chapter bowling title. Any takers? The following day, we will head north for a brunch in Alamo. July 16 and 17th is the Thunder on the Mountain Rally in Brian Head, Utah. The Poker Run on Saturday is a Chapter ride. Some will be up for the entire weekend. And some, like me, will head up very early Saturday morning. We will find a hotel off the mountains, and ride back very early Sunday morning, before it heats up. Stay tuned for the hotel information. We will have a Meet-N-Eat on the 22nd. We will be going to the Hot Rod Grill. It has recently changed hands; we'll see what's new on this menu. Our New Member Ride is on July 24th. The New Member ride is geared toward showing the new members our Group Riding style, but all members are encouraged to attend and are more than welcome. In fact, these tend to be our better attended rides. Continued on Page 3 P A G E 2

Director s Saddle...continued On the 26th, some of our Chapter members will be escorting the flag which has wound its way around the country, passing through many of the lower 48 states before coming to Las Vegas. This ride is organized by the Nation of Patriots, They are "Passing An American Flag Through 48 States Over 100 Days In Honor of All Veterans, And Their Families". Visit the website to follow the progress. The flag will leave LVHD close to 9:00 am and be escorted to Lancaster California, to be passed on for its next leg. Come see it off, or if you can, join in the ride. Even if it is just to the state line. August starts with a Road Captains Choice. These are always good, long rides. I don't know where, but I am sure it will be north and cool. Sturgis is also in August. For those going, it will be great. This is the Mecca for us Hoggies. The overnighter in August is to Torrey, Utah. I missed this one last year, but I won't this year. Book your rooms as soon as you can. I am still hearing the stories about the ride. The LOH ladies have a ride to Mount Charleston planned for us, and we will round out the month on a New Members ride. Come to the meetings! Come to the events! Come out to the rides! Matt Hamm The roads are endless, let s go!! Make Your Miles Count The HOG Mileage Program is beautiful in its simplicity you ride, and we ll reward you. We ll even give you a pin and patch for just signing up (registration is FREE). After that, additional pins, patches and motorcycle medallions will be awarded at various intervals. Your first reward comes at just 1,000 miles (1,610km). Of course, there are some rules you ll have to follow: Only active HOG members (full, life, associates and associate life) may participate. If you have more than one Harley, you have to enroll each one, and only the mileage after you enroll will count towards your award. You may participate as a rider, a passenger or both just make sure you fill out a form for each. And, your Enrollment Form (available at the Chapter meetings) and award submissions must be officially endorsed by an Authorized Harley Davidson Dealership. However, it is still your responsibility to submit them once they are endorsed. So, what are you waiting for? Get enrolled in the program, enjoy riding with the Chapter, and reap the rewards for putting enjoyable miles on your Harley. P A G E 3

Carson City Ride The Memorial Day weekend ride began on Saturday with 33 members shaking hands and hugging in the Albertson s parking lot. Then at 6:45 AM, the Road Captains told us our ride plan and reviewed the hand signals. I could not remember the route so, my plan was to follow the bike in front of me. We rode to Beatty and then across Death Valley, over the Inyo mountains to Big Pine. Continuing up 395 past Crowley Lake, Mammoth and Mono Lake, Yosemite and the Sierra mountains. We arrived at the hotel in Carson City at 5:00 PM having traveled 500 miles in 10 hours. I know what your thinking, that s crazy, but, the whole day was one beautiful vista after another. I felt like I was watching a movie of beautiful scenery, the road and time just passed by. In the evening, we had a group dinner at Red s restaurant. Everyone was happy and thrilled with the day s ride. Sunday, you could choose what you wanted to do. Some stayed in the Carson City area, others rode to Virginia City or took a mountain train ride. I went with a small group of riders, lead by Speedo, for a ride on the twisty mountain roads around Lake Tahoe. We did lots of 35 mile an hour twists and turns, enjoying the view. I thought, this is what it must be like to ride in the Swiss Alps so, I pretended for a while and even yodeled a little. We returned to the hotel having traveled 270 fun miles. That evening, we had a group dinner in the hotel and talked about our different adventures of the day. Monday, we took the I95 home. Riding back into the 94 degree heat of Las Vegas valley, I found myself thinking about the snow capped mountains of my Switzerland and what a great SNHOG overnight ride we had. We traveled 1,250 miles. It was a fun and easy ride. We stopped about every 125 miles for fuel, snacks, drinks and a stretch. A 500 mile day is just 4 short rides. Many thanks to the SNHOG officers and members who planned the ride and the stops, arranged for the hotel, restaurants and activities. Watching the Road Captains, Scouts, and Rabbits work is like watching a Bike Ballet. All I had to do, to have a safe ride, was to follow the bike in front of me and pass the hand signals back. 8 WANTED Rough and Rowdy Las Vegas HD Gang Invade Virginia City $10,000 Reward (in Dealer Chips) for their capture DEAD OR JUST DEAD TIRED!!! What a motley crew.but man did we have fun!!! Our gang took a trip to Carson City over the three-day Memorial Weekend. Our amazing Road Captains took us on the greatest ride out there on Saturday. We started at 7:00 a.m. and hit every twisty-turney-mountain-valley-beautiful scenery road from Las Vegas to Carson City. Ten hours of the most gorgeous riding you could ever want. AND THEN THE FUN STARTS! We all arrive at our destination hotel after a long and perfect ride. After getting settled, we all invade the Restaurant across the street and start sharing our stories of the day along with some ice cold beer, of course. The next day we had a free day to do whatever. Some took another 250 mile ride throughout the valley, some went up to Lake Tahoe, and others, like us above, went to Virginia City to the Bucket of Blood Saloon. What a kick that little town is. You actually feel like you are in the cast of Bonanza waking around on the wooden sidewalks and saloons. We all had a great day. On the ride home, we decided to take the QUICK route home, and boy did we fly. Our Road Captains kept us all safe and we made it home in record time. I can t wait to do it again next year. I cannot tell you how much I love riding with this Chapter. I think we are definitely No. 1 See you on the roads, Tracy Torres P A G E 8

From the Road Captains... By Jim Brown (JB) Hello, my name is JB and I am one of your Assistant Lead Road Captains. Today I m writing about the dynamics of group riding in hopes of pointing out a few things that can make the difference between a good ride and a great ride. I m passing on just a few reminders about how Road Captains (RCs) do their jobs in a manner that has been time tested and is continually reinforced by training. The most important thing to remember while group riding (or riding alone for that matter) is that each rider understands that they have responsibility for their own safety. Each of us should always ride within our capabilities and that of our motorcycle. We ride differently than other groups - so we ve been told. Our procedures may appear on the militant side, yet rightly so, to promote safety as the group gets larger. As you know, Road Captains communicate with CBs on channel 33. Once the RCs determine by CB amongst themselves that a certain maneuver is necessary (changing lanes etc.) they will communicate that movement to the rest of the riders with hand signals. Those hand signals are diligently reviewed at the beginning of each ride. All others with CBs riding in the group may listen in, but please don t talk. It s confusing, jams up the channel and is a distraction for the RCs working the ride. There is also a tendency for those riders with CBs to begin the maneuver they ve heard before the hand signal has been passed back. This is also strongly discouraged, as it adds confusion. Follow the bike in front of you. As to the hand signals themselves, we get a lot of comments from members about riders not properly passing back the hand signals. Being a group ride, you need to insure you extend your arm high in the air and hold it until the person behind you does the same. Continued on next page P A G E 9

From the Road Captains continued So, moving on - there is one signal that I feel is one of the most important, usually done on a two-lane road: SINGLE FILE. Reasons for single file being sent back are: The group needs to avoid a hazard in the road. We need to set up to pass a vehicle To insure each of us has plenty of room side to side on a curvy country road. We may need to bring RC s from the back to the front. Weather conditions So you can see the importance of following the bike in front of you while in single file. And use the two second rule. Now that I have brought up the two second rule, let s remind ourselves what it means. I am sure there are math majors out there that could give us lessons on feet per second to forward motion. Well, I don t think that is what we are looking for. All you need to do is pick out a spot for the bike in front of you to pass (like a tree or telephone pole) and as they pass it, you count two seconds and you should be at that same spot. The reason for this is that by having two seconds between you and the bike in front of you (which makes one second behind the bike at your side in staggered position) you and the others around you will have room to move from side to side should it be necessary. We get most of our comments from your fellow riders about people not giving enough space or riding too close. Please give the riders around you room to maneuver. Finally, I m bringing up SPEED. We ride at the posted speed limit up to 70 mph. This will change due to road and/or weather conditions. But, because no two speedometers read the same, the Lead Road Captain, for most rides, uses and follows a GPS to insure we know how fast we are really going. If you are having a problem keeping up due to the speed or just don t want to ride the same speed as the group, or maybe don t like the rubber-banding effect in the back, not to worry; at the next stop, let us know what the problem is and we will do all we can to help you find a place you feel comfortable. Group riding is just that a group of individuals out to have fun riding together so as long as we all follow the same guidelines we can all have great, memorable and safe rides. JB P A G E 10
