1 The Eastern Kentucky University Spirit Prgram Cheer Tryut Infrmatin Statement f Purpse The missin f the EKU Cheer Squads is t supprt the athletic teams at Eastern Kentucky University by generating crwd enthusiasm and actively engaging with ur fans. The EKU Cheerleaders are ambassadrs f the University and represent the University at a variety f alumni, civic, and charitable events and are cmmitted t displaying a psitive and cllegiate image at all times that reflects the values and traditins f Eastern Kentucky University. Squad Descriptins The EKU All Girl Team generally cnsists f athletes. The EKU Ced Team is grwing rapidly and this past year cnsisted f apprximately 9 ced cuples. These numbers can fluctuate frm year t year given the needs f the team. Bth squads cheer at all hme ftball games and men s and wmen s basketball games. Travel teams fr ne t tw away ftball games and fr the OVC Turnament fr basketball are chsen based n senirity, age, perfrmance qualities, skill, grades, and attendance recrds at practices, games, and events. Clinics are Nt required fr Tryuts But highly recmmended. We d teach Tryut Material at the Spring Clinics. Stunt Clinics are pen t athletes 5 th grade and Up March 24 th 12-2 pm Middle Schl Sessin/2-4 pm High Schl Age and Up April 22 nd 2-4 pm High Schl Age and Up Cst fr clinics is $50 per persn. Cst fr Tryuts is $50 per persn. The Begley Building is where the Cheer Rm is lcated. The Begley Building is the ftball stadium and the Cheer Rm is in the bttm. Tryut Requirements Incming freshmen ARE eligible t tryut but MUST be admitted at the time f their tryut. Transfer students with a minimum 2.0 GPA are eligible. Current EKU students must be enrlled full-time (12 hurs) t be eligible. Current EKU students must be in gd disciplinary standing with the University. Transfer students must be disciplinary and academically eligible t return t the University frm which they are transferring. $50 fee must be submitted during Tryut Registratin. TRYOUT FLOW Candidates will have drawn numbers and beginning with #1 -- An AG stunt grup/ced Cuple will tumble ut n the hardwd and perfrm the EKU Fight Sng with pms, standing tuck and stunt incrp. The Grup/Cuple will then perfrm a sideline with a fullup incrp fr All-Girl and a tss extensin fr Ced. Each grup/cuple will have ne chance during the sideline prtin t hit their stunt. Tumbling will fllw the sideline. Each candidate will demnstrate a standing tuck then their highest level standing pass and running pass. After all numbers have demnstrated the abve, we will start back with #1 demnstrating their chsen Elite Stunt. Elite stunts include spins and/r inversins with pp ff, spinning pp ff r duble dwns. Cllege level inversins and duble dwns are wrth the mst. Include nly ne transitin max. Each grup/cuple may attempt their elite stunt twice final day.

6 Eastern Kentucky University Memrandum f Understanding Eastern Kentucky University Cheerleaders are expected t fllw this memrandum f understanding, and any breach f it may result in being remved frm the squad as well as the frfeit f the cheerleader s schlarship. EKU Cheerleaders are ambassadrs fr the University, and shuld always display prfessinal character and values. Participatin as a member f the Eastern Kentucky Cheer Squad is a privilege, nt a right. Final determinatin f participatin by any and all members rests with the head cheer cach. All plicies and prcedures as utlined in this dcument serve as prgram guidelines and are nt all-encmpassing. If at any time the Directr f Marketing r the Head Cheer Cach deems that behavir and/r actins f a prgram member are nt in line with the best interests f the Eastern Kentucky Cheer Team, the prgram member will be remved frm participatin. Academics Yu must be enrlled in a minimum f twelve (12) credit hurs a semester fr undergraduate and a minimum f six (6) credit hurs a semester fr graduate students. If yu fall belw this yu will be dismissed frm the squad. Yu must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA. If yu fall belw this yu will be placed n prbatin and pssibly dismissed frm the team. Hwever, we d expect yu t d yur best and maintain a GPA well abve a 2.0, as yu are representatives f EKU. Schlarships will be given at the beginning f each semester. The amunt culd vary depending n the budget, number f members n the team, year n the team and skill level. If yu shuld be remved frm the squad during a semester yur schlarship will be taken away. Practices and Games Yu are required t attend ALL practices, games, and appearances. Yu must be stretched and ready when practice starts. Yu must arrive at ftball games at the time designated by the caches, and 1 hur befre tipff at basketball games. This means unifrms n, and hair dne. Yu must return frm halftime tw minutes befre the secnd half. Excused absences will be at the discretin f the cach. All music played in practice MUST BE the radi edit f each sng. Vulgar language will nt be tlerated. There will be n cell phnes at practices, games, r appearances. Cheerleading is t cme befre any ther extracurricular activity such as srrities, fraternities, and intramural sprts. Practice schedules will be given ut a mnth in advance, s yu can plan wrk and ther activities arund Cheerleading. During games, yu are expected t act prfessinal, and be respectful f ther teams. There will be n yelling f dergatry r negative cmments t any f the ther team s players, cheerleaders, caches, r fans. Yu are nt allwed t chew gum r have any fd/drinks n the sideline besides water.

7 Spirit Members are representatives f the University. At all times, Spirit Members behavir shuld be exemplary. Spirit Members shuld nt make unalterable plans during Thanksgiving Break and Christmas Break, as hme games and tw a day practices are cre functins f the Prgram. Persnal vacatins are Nt acceptable reasns t pt ut f Spirit Prgram bligatins. Travel Traveling t away games is bth a privilege and a respnsibility. When a specified number f members are permitted t travel, final authrity n selectin f the travel squad rests with the cach. In general, teams are limited t bringing 12 cheerleaders and ne masct. Cnsideratin as t travel selectin is based n a system f inclusivity and senirity. Senirity is determined by length f service t the team, nt academic standing. A variety f factrs are als taken int cnsideratin including, but nt limited t the fllwing: Whm will best represent the University Academic Eligibility Disciplinary infractins Attendance Recrds at practices, games and appearances Senirity Functinality (fr example, if a freshman bases a senir tp girl, then they may travel bc f it) Skill Other factrs that will play in include service hurs perfrmed. Great care and cnsideratin ges int chsing wh will travel. A huge number f factrs are cnsidered and all effrts are made fr selectins t be made as fairly as pssible. If a travel member wh is chsen turns dwn the ffer due t class requirements/academics, then anther member is carefully chsen. Please remember it is unfeasible t travel all back spts r tp girls, etc. Cmpetitin As cheerleaders fr Eastern Kentucky University, yur NUMBER ONE PRIORITY is cheering games, supprting ur athletic teams, and ging t appearances. This includes leading cheers, raising the level f fan supprt at games, and engaging psitively with students, faculty, administratin and alumni. With that being said, becming a natinally recgnized team in the cmpetitive arena is what will attract the tp cheer athletes in the cuntry t EKU. If yu are a part f the cmpetitin team, be ready t be pushed t be the Best yu can be! If at any time the cach feels that cmpetitin is taking pririty ver ur primary purpse f supprting EKU Athletics, then the ptin f cmpeting will be remved frm cnsideratin. Appearance Yu are required t have the apprpriate unifrm, shes, scks, and bws n at all games and appearances. Ladies must have their hair pulled back neatly, half up, with natural make up and lipstick n. Men must have a cleanly shaven face. Men and wmen shuld keep hair a natural clr, and n piercings r tatts shuld be shwing. Fingernails must be kept shrt and plish free at games and appearances. N jewelry is allwed t be wrn at any games, practices, r appearances. Cheerleaders must wear apprpriate cheerleading clthes at practices and when wrking ut with the strength caches. Cheer Gear Any unifrms, pms, megaphnes, bags, warm ups, etc. that yu are issued are prperty f EKU, and must be returned in gd cnditin at the end f the year.

8 If yu are remved frm the squad, r vluntarily quit, yu must return all gear in gd cnditin t yur cach immediately. If yu lse r ruin any f the items, yu are respnsible fr the replacement cst. Yu may nly wear unifrms at games and appearances d nt let ther peple brrw them. It is suggested that yu wear anther pair f shes while running and wrking ut, nt yur game shes. Persnal Cnduct Plicy Members are always representing themselves, the University, and as such, will cmmit t hlding themselves t a higher than nrmal standard f behavir. Members can be held accuntable, suspended r remved frm the team fr immral, illegal, r unethical actins that take place inside r utside team activities. Spirit Prgram Members are expected t cnduct themselves in a way that uphlds the character, traditins, integrity, and the spirit f the University and the prgram. Alchl and Drugs Cheerleaders shall nt pssess r drink alchlic beverages r drugs in vehicles. Cheerleaders shall nt cnsume alchlic beverages r be under the influence f drugs befre r during games, practices, and appearances. Cheerleaders shall nt cnsume alchlic beverages r be under the influence f drugs while n trips t away games r cmpetitins. Cheerleaders shall nt cerce thse under 21 t drink alchlic beverages. Yu are expected t be gd; law abiding citizens, any unlawful pssessin, use, distributin, r manufacture f a cntrlled substance by a cheerleader at any time shall result in dismissal frm the team. Cheerleaders wh vilate these rules will be subject t serius disciplinary measures up t, and including dismissal frm the squad. Scial and Online Media Yu are expected t be an ambassadr fr Easter Kentucky University; therefre, yu need t use discretin when psting pictures and vides nline. Yu shuld als be aware f the things yu are saying nline, yu shuld always behave like ladies and gentlemen while n the squad. Each Spirit Member s behavir gd r questinable reflects n the University at all times and in all media frmats. Members need t be aware that all infrmatin psted n the Internet is subject t University and Cheer Prgram standards. Any inapprpriate material r cmments psted nline can result in disciplinary actin fr the Spirit Member. All members are prhibited frm psting anything that wuld be cnsidered inapprpriate, r create an unwelcming prgram r team envirnment. Questinable cntent includes, but is nt limited t: Cnsumptin f alchl/drugs/tbacc in any way Inapprpriate, vulgar, racist, sexist, nne welcming r divisive language Inapprpriate status updates r discussin f team matters Cmprmising Phts

9 Inapprpriate behavir r cmments If needed, a peer based scial media review accunt will be established t mnitr Spirit Members cntent. All spirit members with persnal Facebk, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat accunts will be required t friend this accunt. The accunt will be mnitred by a spirit member wh has vlunteered fr this respnsibility. N caching staff will have access t the accunt. Any questinable cntent will be marked with a 1 in the cmments sectin. The spirit member will then have 24 hurs t remve the cntent in questin. Failure t d s will result in disciplinary actin. Health/Nutritin Yu are expected t stay in shape, and lk gd in yur unifrm. Cheerleaders are required t wrk ut 3 days a week with the strength cach. Failure t d s withut an excuse will result in additinal cnditining at the cach s discretin. Yu are als expected t maintain the skills yu tried ut with thrughut the year, and imprve n them as well. Yu will nt be allwed t cmpete if this is nt met. All cheerleaders must als have health insurance n file, as well as btain a physical at the beginning f the schl year, frm EKU s athletic physician. Yu are expected t be respectful f yur teammates, caches, classmates, and EKU faculty and staff. Yu are als expected t behave in a respectful manner n campus, as well as in public. If it is reprted that yu are behaving disrespectfully n r ff campus, it is at the cach s discretin as t hw t prceed. Schlarships Schlarships are awarded t members accrding t the fllwing criteria: Years f service Academic perfrmance Freshmen will receive the bulk f their freshmen year schlarship during the secnd semester alltment distributin.
