1 Madrona Park FALL INTO FUN The Snowball Effect Of One Random Act This amazing story happened in a small town in California but has spread ripples much farther. It was written and shared by Robert Langdon, an employee at the store where it happened; these are his words: With all the hate, bitterness and pettiness going on in this nation today, I wanted to share what has turned out to be one of the top 0 days of my entire life. I work for Vons in Bishop, and today, we had a bunch of military personnel come in to the store on their way to Bridgeport. A customer came to me and said she wanted to buy all of their purchases. All of them! She asked how it could be done so she could be anonymous. I told her she could purchase a gift card and I would open up a register then just ring all of them up on the one ticket. She agreed and wondered about how much of a card to buy, $00 or $600? In looking around and seeing they were just buying sandwiches and drinks, I thought that was way too much, and she ended up purchasing one for $0; if there was anything left, she would come back in at a later date to pick it up. I opened a register and announced over the intercom for all military personnel to come through check stand number one. The customer quickly left the store. As the young men and women began to come through with their purchases, they all had their wallets out and I got to tell them that all their purchases were paid for! The gratitude and amazement on all their faces was a priceless experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. I let them know where the generosity came from and they all said thank you; each and every one of them addressed me as Sir. As it turns out, that was only a small portion of the military that was about to enter our store. They just kept coming and kept coming. Other members of our community saw what was going on and that the tab had easily surpassed the $0 then began handing me money to cover the rest. I could barely hold back the tears as I was checking these fine young soldiers out. This community showed there is still a tremendous amount of love and support for our country and the people who serve it. All the while, I got to feel like Santa Claus! The total tab ended up well over double what that amazing customer started with her contribution, and after accepting the rest of the funds from the other generous donations, there was still a balance of over $0, which was quickly picked up by Vons employees. This experience gave me such a sense of warmth and faith in humanity, I want to share it with as many people as possible. I only have a dozen Facebook friends, so I would love it if you dozen friends would share this with all your friends and not let this act of kindness go essentially unnoticed. Thank you and God bless America! Save The Date Sept. 2 First Sunday Services Sept. 3 Trip to The Tahoma National Cemetery Sept. 4 Trip to Emerald Queen Casino Sept. Bible Study with Pastor Will Sept. 2 60 Minutes Still Ticking It s a familiar sound to many TV viewers on Sunday nights: a ticking stopwatch signaling the start of 60 Minutes. The weekly program pioneered the newsmagazine format when it debuted Sept. 24, 96, and it celebrates its 0th anniversary this month. The show was created by TV producer Don Hewitt, who had a new idea for presenting documentaries. Inspired by the diverse content of print magazines, his vision was an hourlong show with three short segments that offered a mix of serious stories and lighter features. Journalists Harry Reasoner and Mike Wallace were the first hosts of 60 Minutes, which aired in various time slots before settling on Sunday nights. Other notable reporters over the years include Ed Bradley, Morley Safer, Diane Sawyer and Lesley Stahl. From 97 until 20, the program closed with a thoughtful, often humorous, commentary by Andy Rooney. Known for its investigative reports, interviews with U.S. presidents and other world leaders, and profiles of entertainers and athletes, 60 Minutes has won more than 3 Emmy Awards and numerous honors for distinguished journalism. The famous ticking stopwatch didn t appear in the first show, but was added later to open the broadcast, mark the time between segments, and run during the closing credits. The Lunchbox Legacy The sight of a metal lunchbox is a source of nostalgia for many people who carried one to school or work. Beginning in the late 00s, workers and children packed their lunches in cloth, wicker baskets, metal pails and tins. In 902, the first true lunchbox was sold. Created for kids, it was made of metal, resembled a picnic basket and featured images of playing children. The design of these containers changed in the following years. The familiar domeshaped worker s lunchbox with a thermos bottle for keeping beverages hot or cold debuted in 9. Then in 93, the first lunchbox to showcase a licensed character came on the market in the form of an oval metal tin decorated with Mickey Mouse and his friends. School lunches were forever changed in 90, the year that Aladdin Industries produced a square metal lunchbox with a picture of TV cowboy Hopalong Cassidy. With 600,000 sold in the first year, the product proved that lunchboxes and entertainment went hand in hand. For several decades, kids used their lunchboxes to show off their favorite TV shows, cartoons, movie stars, music groups, sports teams and video games. Most of today s lunchboxes are made of plastic or insulated fabric, though pop culture franchises remain popular designs. Vintage lunchboxes are also common collectibles rd Avenue South Federal Way, WA Staff General Manager Diane Umayam Sales Advisor Heather Freed Chef Franco Mendiola Health and Wellness Coordinator Kayla Hawkins Memory Care Program Manager Audrey Losey Memory Care Program Manager Mele Loa Office Manager Marissa Canada Program Supervisor Dawn Hayes Plant Operations Supervisor Justin Benson Have the time of your life Get on board with TRAVEL BY LEISURE CARE 20 Destinations Mexican Riviera Cruise Oct 2-2, 20 Presidential Caribbean Cruise Nov 2-Dec 2, 20 For more information, or to book your getaway, contact: Carol Dennis at
