1 A A BLAKEHURST AGED CARE CENTRE NEWS November 2015 Message from Bianca Dear Residents, Hello everyone and welcome to the November newsletter. It s been wonderful seeing so many of you going out on the bus trips and enjoying the picnic outings. It is the right time of year to be enjoying the outdoors, not too hot and not too cold, it s just right! In saying that I would like to take this opportunity to remind relatives, to start bringing in sun hats and sunglasses for your loved ones. Allowing them to enjoy our beautiful outdoor areas in comfort. We have the Melbourne Cup coming up this month, I hope you all enjoy our celebrations here at the facility, and wish those that are having a flutter, the best of luck. Don t forget my door is always open. If you have any concerns, even if you just want to pop in and say hello, please do so. 2 BLAKEHURST HAPPENINGS OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS October was a very busy month, with so many special events, it was hard to keep up. We started with the football tipping presentation, in which we had a first female winner! It was a nice afternoon celebrating everyone s efforts throughout the season, with nibbles and entertainment by Misha. Oktoberfest celebrations are always popular with our residents. The place was decorated in the blue and white checkers, with plenty of German style food and beverages to go round. With Troy our chef ordering in some extra special beer straight from Germany, and brewed by the monks. But you wouldn t drink too much of this beer if you wanted to keep your wits about you. October was Women s cancer awareness month. In which we joined in the cause, with our Pink Cocktail Party! We had everyone in their Pink, even the men got right into it, with extra special pink accessories. The pink cocktails went down smoothly along with some pink treats. We had a great turn out, with everyone putting in a gold coin donation. We managed to raise $ for the cancer council s Pink ribbon fundraiser. We also had Les Green receive his gift for being resident of the month. Les enjoyed an exclusive massage from John our massage therapist. Being treated like a star relaxing and unwinding.

5 Resident Review Picnic at Prince Edward Park Woronora The day was looking promising as we loaded up the bus with our picnic basket, full of tasty food and beverages! The sun was shining brightly and everyone was excited to reach our location for our picnic. As it had been a while since many of us had been to Prince Edward Park. And what a great spot for a picnic, seated with a lovely view of the river. A playground close by, which took us back to our youth, giving the swings a test run! The food that was organised and packed was just perfect for the occasion. Fresh bread rolls with tasty salads and cold meat. After having such a nice meal we decided to take a walk, and get a little closer to nature, while having a little fun. One lady had a little more swing in her than the rest of us, but we won t mention any names! The day was wonderful and the staff, Rhonda and Sara were a great help, I m looking forward to my next picnic here, maybe I ll give the swings a go myself next time.

7 The Melbourne Cup By Slim Dusty There s a bustle in the city, there s excitement in the scrubs There s a drone of rowdy voices in every Aussie pub For a year we ve all been waiting and we ve put our money up And we re out to back the winner of the famous Melbourne Cup There s a pause in all production for our minds are on the race And its time all our worries are forgotten for a space And the women cease there talking, turn the radio well up And with whippin spur their waiting for the starting of the Cup And the T.A.B s are crowded and the punters rush and push They ve held a sweep in every pub in city and in bush Then a mighty cheering follows as the barrier goes up And there s a thousand jockey s spurring every race their in the cup The first Tuesday of November, every year it is the same. Every Aussie heart is beating with excitement of the game For they bet on dream or fancy or the forms they ve followed up. From a dollar up to thousands on the famous Melbourne Cup There are millions who have never even sat upon a horse Whether it be yarding cattle or racing on the course And it s doubtful if they even know the way to saddle up But they take a lot of beating when they re racing in the cup Now the famous race is over for another hopeful year There s a lot of smiling faces and there s others shedding tears There s a battler made a fortune, and a wealthy man hard-up But win or lose they re waiting now for next year s Melbourne Cup Oh that s right There s a bustle in the city, there s excitement in the scrubs There s a drone of rowdy voices in every Aussie pub And the battler makes a fortune, and a wealthy man hard-up But win or lose they re waiti

8 JOKE OF THE MONTH A huge college freshman decided to try out for the football team. Can you tackle? asked the coach. Watch this said the freshman, who proceeded to run smack into a telephone pole, shattering it to splinters. Wow said the coach. I m impressed, can you run? Of course I can run, said the freshman. He was off like a shot, and, in just over nine seconds, he had run a hundred yard dash. Great enthused the coach. But can you pass a football? The freshman hesitated for a few seconds. Well, sir, he said, If I can swallow it, I can probably pass it. Riddle Answer: He fills the 3 gallon jug then empties it into the 5gallon jug. He then refills the 3 gallon jug and continues to fill the 5gallon jug until it s full. Leaving exactly 1 gallon in the 3gallon jug.
