A A BLAKEHURST AGED CARE CENTRE BLAKEHURST AGED CARE CENTRE NEWS APRIL 2015 Message from Bianca Dear Residents, I am pleased to see the facilities interior décor is starting to flow throughout the facility. With the new floor in the Sands dining room, a fresh coat of paint and a couple of beautiful cushions, the improvement is just amazing. I would also like to remind everyone of our Fete, which will be held on Saturday 2 nd May, 10am to 3pm. All proceeds from the day will go towards resident s activity equipment. Everyone is invited to come along and enjoy the day. I would like to wish everyone a very happy Easter, and hope you enjoy spending time with family and friends. As well as devouring the occasional Easter egg! Don t forget my door is always open. If you have any concerns, even if you just want to pop in and say hello, please do so. God bless Bianca Ivancic ESM IN THIS ISSUE Blakehurst Happenings Highlights from March Resident of the Month Meet, Joan MacDonald, one of the residents of Blakehurst Aged Care Resident Review Mazi Restaurant at the Lantern Club Upcoming Events Dates for your diary

BLAKEHURST HAPPENINGS - MARCH HIGHLIGHTS March was jammed full of fun and celebrations. From Chinese New Year to seniors week, with so much going on it was hard to keep up! We celebrated Chinese New Year with an afternoon tea. The place was packed to the rafters, with a couple of special guest Chinese look a-like s. The place was decorated beautifully and the Asian afternoon tea was delicious. But it was the fortune cookies everyone had the most fun with! With some of them being spot on. On St Patricks Day we saw a sea of green. Celebrating with some good old fashion Irish jokes, green drinks and a wonderful entertainer. It was a top day, to be sure, to be sure!! All enjoyed Misha singing our Irish favourites along with some dazzling tricks performed by her magician friend. Our first picnic outing for the year was to the Auburn Botanic Gardens. Where they have a great variety of gardens. The residents really enjoyed the picnic lunch with plenty of food and drink. There was even enough left over for the birds to have a little. It was just a shame that the picnic tables are situated just outside the gardens. Seniors week was celebrated in style with our 1920 s Lawn Party. Everyone was dressed in their 1920 s garb, with Edna Hope winning best dressed, with her 1920 s style dress and beautiful accessories. The scene was set for a great afternoon. That was until the rain came, but it didn t dampen anyone s spirt, it just added to the excitement. We were able to still play a couple of games indoors as well as have some fun dressing up 1920 s style. We took some wonderful pictures of the event, sadly our memory card was corrupted. Erasing the photos taken, we apologise for any disappointment caused.

BLAKEHURST RESIDENT OF THE MONTH Frances Joan MacDonald Joan was born on Wednesday 19 th October Growing up with her sister, Lorna Gilmore Parkman, in Koorawatha near Cowra & Young. Joan worked for her father in the General store at Koorawatha until she married. It was in 1943 when Joan met her husband, Ian, at a local dance. Ian was a staff sergeant in the Army and at the time he was sent to go to Cowra to help with the Cowra breakout. So if it wasn t for the breakout the two would have never met. Ian, Joan s husband, wasn t alone in doing his bit for the war. Joan was an aeroplane spotter, were she watched the horizon for aircrafts, having to identify if they are enemy s or not and what direction they are headed. Joan and Ian married, on January 31 st 1949 at the Methodist church in Cowra. Joan and Ian have 3 lovely children, Peter, Graham and Jennifer. Now Joan has six grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Having my children, seeing them grow and succussed, has been a wonderful experience. Joan has travelled extensively, to England, Europe, Japan, New Zealand, New Guinea and America. America being the country she would travel to most often as her daughter Jennifer lives in Seattle. On the last count Joan has travelled to America 25 times. Being able to travel and experience all these wonderful places has been a real privilege. Joan feels very lucky to have had such an interesting and full life. Joan kept herself fit in her younger years playing tennis, also enjoying the sports on TV. Joan had talent in her fingers with the ability to play the piano, sew, garden and work a needle with her handcrafts. Joan now keeps herself busy with knitting, craft, reading, playing Euchre, going on bus outings and joining in the activities.

Resident review Mazi Resaurant by Nancy Greig The drive to the club was very picturesque, with the frangipani s and tibouchina s flowering a beautiful deep purple. We arrived at the Lantern Club, in Roselands. Greeted by a friendly man who opened the door and welcomed us into the club. The entrance to the restaurant, couldn t be missed, with a lovely big glass panel with the writing Mazi on it. We were told the name is Greek and means coming together with friends. A young man took our orders, whose service was very good, looking after us while we dinned. There is plenty on the menu, prawns, pork belly, salmon and more. I ordered the Lamb and Rosemary sausage, well, that was where I went wrong. As I sat eating my meal, I realised, I was the only one not enjoying my dish. My fellow dinners enjoyed their meal much more I did. The atmosphere at the restaurant was quite pleasant. But the tables were very large, making it difficult to converse with those on the other side. Especially if you re a little hard of hearing. Unfortunately there is no water view, but the décor of the place was stunning. With a large exposed brick wall as a feature. I may not have enjoyed my meal this time, but I would be willing to go again and try something different on the menu.

LAUGH OUT LOUD JOKE OF THE MONTH Young Ernie and his family were invited to have Easter Sunday s lunch at his grandmother s house. Everyone was seated around the table as the meal was being served. When Ernie received his plate he began to eat instantly. Ernie wait until we say grace demanded his father. I don t have to the 5 year old replied. Of course you do Ernest his mother insisted rather forcefully we always say a pray before eating at our house That s at our house Ernie explained. But this is grandma s house, and she knows how to cook! Open Wednesdays & Thursdays. Located in the Bay

POETS CORNER The Joy of Easter was Born of Good Friday s Sorrow By Helen Steiner Rice Who said the darkness of the night Would never turn to day, Who said the winter s bleakness Would never pass away, Who said the fog would never lift And let the sunshine through, Who said the skies now overcast Would never more be blue- Why should we ever entertain These thoughts so dark and grim And let the brightness of our mind Grow cynical and dim When we know beyond all questioning That winter turns to spring And on the notes of sorrow New songs are made to sing- For no one sheds a teardrop Or suffers loss in vain, For God is always there to turn Our losses into gain, And every burden born today And every present sorrow Are but God s happy harbingers Of a joyous bright tomorrow. Riddle Answer: The River was frozen
