1 Poway Polo Club s Official Newsletter November 2016 Poway Polo Post A polo handicap is your passport to the world. Winston Churchill A Word from our *New* President It is an honor to write this message for the first time as President of the Poway Polo Club. We are all part of a club with a great polo history behind us, and with your continued help, we ll have a long run of great polo in front of us. How does this happen in a club that charges no dues? It happens because of great people selflessly dedicating their August talents and2016 enthusiasm in many ways. There are a lot pokers in our polo fire right now, from the recent Beginner Clinic, the Tonight In San Diego Filming, Interscholastic Practices, new T-Shirts, our new newsletter, the upcoming Shane Rice Clinic, Holiday Party, Scottsdale Field Trip, etc. This past summer, Andrew and I were at a private club near Santa Barbara where eight players each played eight chukkers on eight separate horses! Goodness, we re a lot different than that, but we re still doing it with evenings filled with up to fifteen players, some with just a single horse! This is great polo, this is great for polo! All this enthusiasm translates into noticeable improvement for our playing and our club. Thank you, and let s keep it up! Parker Scott Congratulations to the 2017 Poway Polo Board of Directors! Parker Scott President Hollie Boggess Vice President Diane Schnoebelen Secretary/Treasurer Gillian Young Amber Bennett Board Members at Large In This Issue: Beginner Clinic p.2 Hering Cup p.3 Tonight in San Diego Film Crew p.4 Shane Rice Bio p.5 Body Conditioning p. 6-7 Events Calendar p.8 New Member Spotlight: Ben Martins Ben Martins stumbled upon polo as a way to enter a new challenge into his life. A friend introduced him to a polo pro who took him around Eldorado and Empire Polo Clubs explaining the horses, the game and well, the rest is history. A simple phone call and referral to Poway Polo has landed him a permanent spot in the Poway Polo family. A hard working self-employed contractor, Ben can build, fix or create anything, apparently. He s the one who built our new shed, quickly learned to water and drag the arenas and even helped the rodeo staff with set up and take down all weekend. Ben is a joy to be around and we are thrilled to have him in our club. While Ben just started riding a few months ago, he s already taken on the commitment of owning a horse, learning to care for her, and be a responsible horse owner and rider. That s what Poway does takes beginners and turns them into functional, mindful, caring polo people. Ben s a good one. Say hi when you see him at chukkers!
2 Page 2 Poway Polo Club hosted its First Ever Beginner Clinic in October, hosting 14 prospective new members who had never tried polo but had always wanted to try. Among the participants were five members of our fellow PVRA subgroup of Pony Club! A few have already returned for chukkers or lessons! The day began with a sit down introduction to a few of the basic rules, followed by an intro to hitting with foot mallets. Next, they mounted our large string of trusty steeds provided by various members of the club. After a few minutes of stick and ball, they scrimmaged against each other in two chukker groups. Finally, they were able to watch two chukkers, one slow, one fast of our regular members, with Parker narrating the matches so the new students would put it all together to complete the experience. A lot of positive feedback was received and we hope to have many more to come in the future! Enormous Thank Yous are needed for the club members who played vital roles in the event running smoothly. Thank you to Parker for instructing and taking the lead in the agenda for the day. Thank you to Sherry for co-instructing and for bringing your horses out of retirement for the event. Thank you to Diane and Amber for manning the paperwork portion of the event and checking in the participants with food, beverage and waivers. A big thank you to Gillian for the organizing and idea of the event advertising and gathering sign ups and lending her 3 horses to the newbies. Thank you also to Larry, Taylor and Niki for lending their horses as well. And a big overall thank you to the regular club members in attendance to help make the day well staffed, enthusiastic and helped motivate the newbies: David T., Ben, Niki, Ian, Andrew, Roger, Stacy, Gwen, David B., Brent, Nancy, and even the Boggess showed up! Thank you all for your support and help in every aspect of the day! We already have one new member since the clinic, so welcome to Susan Loveall!
3 Page 3 Poway Representatives Compete at Lakeside for the USPA s 3 rd Annual Hering Cup It was Lakeside Polo Club s 60 th anniversary and Kip Hering, who is almost (or already is..) 80 years old, went Head to Head fighting tooth and nail for 4 chukkers to win MVP in front of decades worth of friends and family. The Hering Cup Finals consisted of Team Young Guns: Garrett Bankhead, Skyler Dale and Team Captain Molly Agee, and Los Viejos and the Kid Kip Hering, Steve Geyer/Rik Crane, and Poway Phenom Andrew Scott. What a game. The Old Men keeping up with and giving the kids a run for their money. Score was close only one or two points behind for the Old Guys for most of the match, so at the end of the 3 rd, the score was 6-7. However the kids surged ahead in the 4 th to beat them by 4, final score Umpire for the weekend was Kimo Huddleston, now a full time umpire with USPA Umpires, LLC. FUN FACT! If you add up the ages of the members of the Young Guns team, it s 51. Younger than the second youngest member of the Los Viejos team. Just for shiggles the sum of the ages of the other team is 218. Yeaaaaaaah. That s pretty crazy. It was a really spectacular match by any measure. But if you average out the age of the 2 players that split a spot in the game, Rik and Steve the age is STILL 156. Poway member Gillian Young also competed over the weekend, but did not come out victorious. Even with all the orange. 6 Why Body Condition is SO important to your polo horse. Page 6 But I want my horse to be thin and fast and sleek! weight for them to carry. Grass horses run thin. Less Common comments made by people making excuses for why their polo horses are thinner than they should be. In a culture that values slender frames over robust ones, why wouldn t we want our horses to look more slender? Lots of reasons, e.g.: 1. This horse carries you. It needs flesh on its bones to offer padding while saddled. 2. When a horse s body is done burning its fat storage, it begins breaking down muscle. Not good. 3. The least important reason, but most important indicator Appearance. If the horse looks too thin, something needs to be addressed. Even if the horse is not playing hard and fast polo, weight needs to be appropriate. What can you do if your horse starts getting thin? 1. Feed More. -- More hay is expensive, BEET PULP is an extremely affordable alternative to feeding more hay. A 50# bag is around $20, and lasts for weeks. BEET PULP MUST BE ALLOWED TO SOAK HOURS IN ADVANCE 2. Weight Gainer Supplements -- Adeptus Nutrition Gleam and Gain addresses shiny coat and easy weight gainer calories without adding extra energy. 3. Exercise Less -- Just like humans if Calories Out is more than Calories In, weight loss occurs. If your horse is slowly getting thin, back off on the amount of exercise they re getting, or feed more. 4. Blanket in cold weather. If you don t want your horse to shiver off its calories trying to stay warm overnight, consider blanketing your horse during the much colder nights. 5. Vet exam to check if teeth need filing, or other medical issue needs to be addressed. If you think your horse has lost weight, and it needs to look good for interscholastic competition, START NOW FEEDING A HIGH CALORIE DIET TO BULK THEM UP. Ask for help from Amber or Gillian or Veronika on what to feed to keep your horses healthy and fleshy and flashy. NO. What are you thinking? Why do even own horses? Still No. Needs twice as much food, and half as much exercise. Don t let this go. Feeding more while not changing the workout routine might help this scenario not to worsen. Flash 3 months later July 2012 after lots of hay, beet pulp, appropriate exercise and weight gainer supplements.. Still needs some, but the change was quick. What Flash looked like the week Gillian acquired him in May Good. Indicates an Appropriate balance of calories and exercise Nope. Might still pass inspection, but indicates too little exercise and too much food. Definitely not. Horse cannot handle heavy work at this weight. Start slow, feed less, build up exercise time slowly.
