This is the first dinner dance the club has done in the fall as a fundraiser in a very long time, so it was wonderful to see the event so well supported. Four lucky winners won $100 each in the 50/50 raffle. (See more photos on page 7). 2 OFFICER S REPORTS COMMODORE CATHY BETTS We are moving into fall and boy did we have a great Fall Social last Saturday night. I want to thank all of the members who helped put this event together. We had several family members, club members and other members from local Yacht Clubs join us who enjoyed an amazing dinner cooked by Lyle Kagey and Tim Reding with Linda Harms help. The Union River Band was a great surprise - we danced most of the night, what a great discovery we found in Brownsville. Thank You to our door helpers Nancy Terrell and Val Watson, and our Raffle ticket seller Kris Huber. And to the people who stayed to the end and helped clean up. We were so glad to see all the support of our club in set up and clean up. We also made over $1,000 dollars to benefit the club. We are getting ready to start looking for club members who would be willing to take positions on the board and in some of the positions that will be opening up in January. So please start thinking and let Tim Reding or myself know if you are interested in helping the club to continue to grow. We are looking for a Rear Commodore, Purser, and at least 2 trustees. If you think you would like to step into anyone of these positions please let us know. We have some fun cruises coming up so please sign up and join us as the holidays approach. Let Ron Reding know if you are interested in joining us on any of these cruises: Halloween in Port Orchard, Thanksgiving in Des Moines, helping with the Special People Cruise in December, or watching the Holiday Parade of Boats at Dock Street. We also have our Christmas Party December 2, so please come join us. I hope Ron and I see all of you at the upcoming events! VICE COMMODORE TIM REDING Ahoy! What a great summer for cruising! I hope you all got out to enjoy the endless sunshine we have had! The end of August, we had our anchor out at Penrose State Park with 5 boats attending. It was a great weekend as always! Then we were off for the week of South Sound cruising. There were 4 boats that cruised and explored the South Sound area with me which includes my First Mate Linda, Brother Ron and Cathy, Rick Demere, Matt and Debbie Ales. We had a great time relaxing, conversing and boating! We ended the week at Swantown for Labor Day weekend. Thanks to Jim and Nancy Terrell for hosting our fun weekend in Olympia! Totem put on a great night at the salmon bake! There was lots of good company and great food to be had. We enjoyed the band and dancing the night away! Thanks to everyone that helped put this event together. It was a great fundraiser. It's been great serving Totem Yacht Club as Vice Commodore the second time around. Being a flag officer is a rewarding position, it gets you out in the community and involved. So, yes, it's that time of year to be looking for flag officers for next year. If you are interested we have some openings available; Cathy will move to Past Commodore, Tim Reding is up for Commodore, Debbie Ales will be our Vice Commodore, the Rear Commodore position is available, Matt Ales will be our new Yeoman, the Treasurer position is open, and we are looking for 2 more board of trustee members. Lyle Kagey is going to be our new Fleet Captain, and Membership will be Val Watson. There are other positions that will need to be filled and will be announced at a later time. All positions are "voted in" positions by our members so if you would like to challenge for a seat let me or Cathy know. Nominations are open and will be taken at the next general membership meeting. Let me know if you are interested. Viking Commodores Ball is coming up soon. If any club members would like to participate please let us know. Page 2
REAR COMMODORE DEBBIE ALES I want to thank everyone that supported our bi-annual House and Grounds. We cleaned the galley, bathrooms and windows; cleaned and reorganized the galley cabinets; weeded and trimmed the bushes. The salmon feed at the Fall Social was great! The food was exceptional, thank you to Lyle & JoAnn Kagey, Tim Reding and Linda Harms for their hard work. Thank you to everyone that helped setup the social, work at taking money at the door, selling raffle tickets and cleaning up afterwards. It was wonderful to see so many helping hands. The Union River Band was awesome and kept us dancing all night. Hopefully Lyle will share his recipe for the seafood mac and cheese. Provi Simpson has rentals lined up for the clubhouse on October 14, 15, 21 & 28, November 19 & 23 and December 2 & 9. We are getting inquiries for birthdays, reunions, anniversaries, baby showers, meetings and weddings. Remember to keep your ears open and help promote the clubhouse rentals. The rentals help us pay for the clubhouse maintenance. Information can be found at or You can send Provi the contact information of anyone interested in renting the clubhouse at joe.n.provi@gmail.com. Totem has several board positions and appointed officer positions available for I encourage each of you to consider serving Totem Yacht Club in one of the positions. Please contact any flag officer or board member if you are interested. Matt & I are leaving the sailboat world and entering the dark side of power boating. We actually ended up selling our sailboat when we attended the Labor Day cruise with Totem in Swantown. Hopefully all the paperwork will be completed soon and you can look for us on the water with our first power boat in October. OTHER REPORTS FLEET CAPTAIN - RON REDING Joint Halloween cruise Oct This cruise is hosted by Past Commodores of Totem & Des Moines. They currently have 20 boats signed up and we have 12. DATE Nov Dec 9 CRUISE Turkey Cruise, Des Moines Lighted Boat Parade, Dock St To sign-up for cruises please contact me at r_reding@comcast.net or call SUNSHINE LOUISE BURNS Karen Boedecker was injured in a recent automobile accident, but is recovering and managed to make the Salmon Bake last Saturday. Floyd has been sick, but is on his way to recovery. Joe Simpson had heart surgery Wednesday morning and all went well. He is recovering in the hospital and will probably be there for about a week. Provi has thanked the Totem membership for all the well wishes (visits and calls), but has asked that we now give Joe some time to recover quietly. We will follow up on that. My computer is down for a week or two, so I cannot send/receive . If you have sunshine news to share with members, please contact me at
OCT 3 EDUCATIONAL SESSION BOB WATSON The educational session for the October 3 meeting will be about the 2018 Heavy Weather Cruise at Bremerton Yacht Club February This is a fun weekend with opportunities for those with boats as well as non-boaters to join in. Highlighting the weekend is presentation of skits by participating clubs on Saturday evening. Bernie Merrifield, who has produced several skits for Totem in years past (and brought home the coveted winner's trophy) will be at it again in February and will be looking for performers, stage help and a general rooting section in the audience. BYC also hosts the Heavy Weather predicted log race that weekend, and Bob Watson will briefly explain how log racing works and encourage Totem boaters to give it a try. Training will be available for those interested. Add in plenty of social time, a dinner, breakfast and lots of fun folks. The new member application and approval process has become somewhat irregular and not consistent with our By-Laws in recent years. Membership Chair, Val Watson, proposed to the Board a clarification of how the process should work going forward. The Board approved the proposal to become one of Totem's Standing Orders, and Val will present it to the membership at the October meeting. The Board reviewed an extensive set of proposed By- Laws amendments submitted by By-Laws Chair, Bob Watson and approved moving them to the membership for review and ratification. They will be sent to the membership for first reading at the October meeting, with discussion and ratification scheduled for the December meeting. Oysterfest Oct 6-8 Invitation from Shelton Yacht Club Shelton Yacht Club opens its Club House doors to welcome visiting boaters from our reciprocal yacht clubs and provides a free shuttle to the Mason County Oysterfest. The club also hosts meals and activities. (See daily details in Sept Totem Line or go to Please contact us at Mike_Ashford@SheltonYachtClub.com so we can plan for your arrival. RECIPE FOR SEAFOOD MAC & CHEESE LYLE & JOANN KAGEY Lots of requests for the seafood Mac and Cheese recipe served at our fall social. It's decadent and rich but tasty! I've downsized it to serve 6 to 8 servings: Ingredients: 8 ounces macaroni 6 tbs. salted butter, plus butter the pan 1 lbs. of seafood - (I prefer prawns and crab meat) 1/4 cup Flour 2 cups of whole milk 1/2 cup half & half Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3/4 cup grated sharp white cheddar cheese 3/4 cup Gruyere cheese 1/2 cup Asiago cheese Directions: Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the macaroni until still firm. Drain and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9 x 13 pan. Melt 2 tbs of butter in a large skillet over med-high heat. Clean and chop the prawns to bite size pieces (or whatever seafood you choose!) When the butter starts to brown, throw in the prawns and crab meat. Cook until prawns are done - About 3-4 minutes. Set the seafood aside. In the same skillet, add the remaining butter. Sprinkle in the flour, whisking constantly. Let the roux cook for 1-2 minutes. Add the milk, whisking constantly until thick. Next add the half & half and salt and pepper to taste. Add the cheeses, a little at a time to allow to melt - Hold back a little of the Parmesan for the topping. Stir in the seafood and mix gently - Try not to break up the crab meat! Pour the mixture into the buttered pan and top with the Parmesan. Bake minutes. If preferred, broil for a few minutes to get a nice brown crust on top! TOTEM LINE EDITOR HEIDI MERRIFIELD I ve enjoyed doing the Totem Line this year, but am ready to hand it off to somebody else for If you are interested please let me know.
LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT SWANTON OLYMPIA SEPT 1-4 Nancy and Jim Terrell hosted their first cruise and did a fantastic job lining up fun games, group meals and identifying opportunities to socialize, surprise Commodore Cathy by decorating her boat and partaking in festivities at Olympia s annual Harbor Days Festival. Their clever game to match synonyms for each of 16 boats in attendance names was a hoot. See how well you would do: Which Totem boat name is actually bank robbers? Page 5
HABOR DAYS AT OLYMPIA SEPT 1-4 Totem has an annual tradition of decorating the Commodore s boat, however it isn t always easy to find a perfect cruise opportunity to do so. Linda Harms rallied members to do something very unique for Commodore Cathy and each of us did paper plate art to represent ourselves or our boats. When Cathy returned from watching the tugboat races, she was both surprised and impressed! Page 6
