1 1 Commodore s Report David Morton MAR 2013 February has been an eventful month at the club I would like to thank everyone who attended and helped at the Town Hall meeting. We had a good turn out and even better discussions about the current state and direction of the club. While everyone didn't agree on the particulars, I appreciated the open and honest opinions. I hope you found the meeting as valuable as I did. I would like to welcome our newest member, Casey Culberson to the club. Casey moors his 38 foot Beneteau Oceanis sailboat, LuLu Belle, in Everett. The February meeting was also the official Welcome Home for Paul and Trina Smith as they rejoined after a brief hiatus. Please join me in welcoming Casey, Paul and Trina to/back to the PSYC family. There are certain harbingers that tell us spring is right around the corner. Some will say it is when the swallows return to Capistrano. I say the true harbinger- of- spring is when the SYC Trio returns to invite us to Opening Day. This years' theme is Hawaiian Magic and I'm looking forward to a great opening day. This year Marcia Ellingson is our Opening Day Chair and she and her crew have been hard at work pulling everything together. Two years ago, Jerry Zitkovitch revived PSYC's tradition of entering a decorated boat in the Opening Day boat parade. Larry O'Keefe carried the torch last year and this year Patrick Kolanda is already hard at work planning this years' entry. I've talked to Patrick about some of his plans and it should be very interesting. Some of you surely know about our club's history with the decorated boat contest. Just take a look at the trophies in our cases and you'll get an idea of our past performance. What you may not know is that we quite literally turned this contest around. Consider the following from the "Make Mine Water" column in the May 19, 1967 edition of the Seattle Times: "The Puget Sound Yacht and Cruising Club, with three entries, had two firsts and one second, including the coveted grand- overall trophy for [member] Jack Boyd" Our Commodore at the time, Dick Hohag, was quoted in the article just how our little club pulled off this feat. "In the past, yachtsmen have decorated their boats only on the side facing the judges. But the parade passes through the Montlake Cut and there are spectators lining both banks. They are as deserving as the judges." Taking this approach "added a new dimension for the future to an already spectacular marine parade." This is just one example of how our club has made a lasting imprint on NW boating. Look for more examples as we are celebrating our 60th year. Talk of celebration in February naturally brings one to that most loved, heart felt of all holiday's. the PSYC Lobster Feed. This year was truly one to remember. Not only was the club stuffed to the rafters (we had almost 80 folks participating this year), but it was full of drama, too. Jim Hubly has always been our connection to the tasty critters from the deep. Each year we order the lobsters and they are delivered live via FedEx on Friday for dinner on Saturday. This year, things were going smoothly, right up until they got stuck in an FDA border check after landing in Memphis, TN (our lobsters came from Canada). Hours go by with Jim, Kevin Haistings, your author and Nancy "Lobster Lady" Morton, frantically trying to get the critters back on their way. We considered backup plans no, you don't want to know. Ultimately, with much pushing and some well placed calls by Kevin to some buddies in higher places, confirmed that the crustaceans had been released. You already know the end of the to the story, but it never would have happened without a lot of hand holding. Travel nightmares aside, this event would not come about without the work of a LOT of people. Rich Tremaglio lead an all star cast at the tank farm. Lisa Haistings and Donna Sheneman lead the low country boil and galley crew. Fran and Norm Grossman (Birthday boy) Nancy Morton and Pat Hansen handled the decorations and setup. 2 2 Vice Commodore s Report Mike Thompson Hello Members It was nice to see everyone at the Lobster feast last weekend. The food was wonderful, Nancy and her crew of cookers were great. If you have read the assessment online, you would have seen that your furnace had some issues. I brought in a couple of Heating companies to look it over and give us a bid to repair it. The bid was from $19, to $ plus. The technician that I brought in last was the company who installed it in We went over the furnace and we moved a gas pipe over so we could install a filter (as one was never installed at all) and also went over the ducting. The ducting was something I, as Mad Dog Remodeling, could handle so I went to the board and got permission to fix the furnace. The ducting is fixed now and we can change the filter as needed and we saved the club thousands of dollars This is what my job is as facilities manager. Mike Thompson 2013 Vice Commodore Rear Commodore s Report Bradley Byrd This time of year is when it is so nice to see the days get longer. We no longer need headlights in the middle of the day, and on March 10 th, we go to Daylight Savings Time. That means more time to sail after work It s also finally time for the first cruise of the year, and I m ready to get out there Time to shake out the dock lines and lock lines (for those of us in the Lake) and get ready to head out to Poulsbo and Kingston, both of which are coming up soon. I have signed up for both of them; can t wait Unless the weather is dead calm, our boat Brizo will be sailing in Liberty Bay on Saturday March 23 rd. If you are at the Poulsbo Cruise, come aboard, take a turn at the helm, trim a sail, or just bring your toddy and relax for a couple of hours. Of course we haven t been just watching the moss grow this rainy season. The Lobster Feed was amazing Eighty crusty old critters turned up at the club (the lobsters, not the members) And not one of them went to waste. The appetizers, entrées and desserts were enough to make another party on their own, too. Thanks to Nancy Morton, the Crustacean Queen (promoted from Lobster Lady), Rich Tremaglio, Lisa and Mike Haistings, and Donna Sheneman and all the rest of the crew that made it possible. The February General Meeting was really fun. It sure was great to see Paul and Trina Smith back at the club where they renewed their memberships. We also welcomed fellow sailor and new member Casey Culberson to the club at the last meeting. If you missed the Seattle Yacht Club introduction and video to the 2013 Opening Day, you really missed out. They really go all out to bring the message of Hawaiian Magic to us. I m surprised Commodore David didn t mention it, but the PSYC website has had another major refit. Check out the reciprocals page now. Instead of the old listing, there is now an interactive page. You can see a map of the area, find out what to expect in the way of amenities at and around the marina, take a look at the reciprocal club s website, and even leave comments on the forum for any reciprocals you visit, all from the same page It s really a huge step forward in convenience for us all.
