That s exactly what the Zumba program is all about. It s an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party that s moving millions of people toward joy and health. When participants see a Zumba class in action, they can t wait to give it a try. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before participants know it, they re getting fit and their energy levels are soaring! There s no other fitness class like a Zumba Fitness-Party. (Running shoes are built up too high and can cause serious ankle injuries). Young Scholars Academy What is it? Young Scholars Academy is an opportunity for students to learn more about a favorite academic subject and have fun. When is it? In the mornings from Monday, July 16-Thursday, July 19, Who is it for? Students entering grades 3-6 in the fall of Where is it? All classes will be held at the P-E-M 9-12 Bldg. Parents should drop off and pick up their students at the high school gym. Why YSA? YSA is a fun way for students to explore advanced academic concepts in a small group setting. Class sizes are limited to 12 so students can interact with their instructors. Our goals are to increase student readiness and interest in academics. Who teaches YSA? Instructors are teachers certified by the state of Minnesota in their subject area or experts from our community with experience and advanced knowledge in their fields. Hiawathaland Transit Hiawathaland Transit operates a multi-county transit system in the counties of Goodhue and Wabasha in the communities of Cannon Falls, Elgin, Lake City, Kellogg, Plainview, Red Wing, Wabasha, and Zumbrota. In Plainview and Elgin, we operate a DIAL-A-Ride or curb to curb public transportation system for everyone. Individuals of all ages can ride the bus for any reason at all whether to go to a doctor s appointment, school, dentist, or shopping. We operate Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. Call to schedule your ride! What kinds of classes are offered? YSA Students can choose from advanced work in math, science, foreign language, writing, and art. Complete catalogs are available from your child s classroom teacher or by contacting Tracy Moran. How much does it cost? Programs like this can be expensive, but our goal is to keep the cost as reasonable as possible. Each class will cost $40 and includes all materials needed for the class and a YSA t-shirt. 3 The Plainview-Elgin Area Food Shelf serves the entire PEM school district. Now through July 31 the Food Shelf will be collecting the following new or gently used items for the school year. These items will be distributed to families in need during the month of August during the regular Wednesday Food Shelf business hours. Any donations can be dropped at the Food Shelf on Wednesdays, or Elgin City Hall during regular business hours. Many local churches will also have drop-off sites. Any family needing help to supply their children for the upcoming school year may register at The Plainview-Elgin Area Food Shelf, 25 East Main St, Elgin, MN. More will be announced as the time nears September. questions may be sent to bonitarahman@gmail.com Prairie Fire Theatre Activity # 2049D Single Activity #2064D Family Prairie Fire Children s Theatre (or PFCT) is a professional touring theatre company based in Barrett, Minnesota and has been bringing a theatrical experience to communities across the upper Midwest since Prairie Fire tours a variety of original musical adaptations of classic tales. Throughout the entire year, Prairie Fire Children s Theatre sends two professional Actors/Directors to a community for a one week residency. Local children fill the roles, and PFCT provides everything needed to do the show. After a week of rehearsing, the cast will perform the play twice on the weekend. This weeklong theater workshop is for children ages 7-18 (no exceptions). This year s production will be an original musical production of Robin Hood. In addition to the cast, help is needed with the lights and sound. This is a great opportunity for PFCT alums to still participate in this really fun week! 6 Bluegrass Concert on May 17 Thank You Ferman Lanning and SEMBA for organizing this wonderful concert. Safety Town Session I For children ages 4-7 Safety Town is a hands-on learning adventure for children to practice life-saving safety rules. The 8-day curriculum includes a miniature town where children practice supervised, simulated traffic situations. Daily activities include guest speaker presentations, video presentations, singing, crafts, classroom discussions, and their favorite activity of all riding the Big Wheels around the miniature town! Safety Town teaches: Not to talk to strangers, bicycle safety rules, traffic/pedestrian rules, poison prevention, what to do in an emergency, water safety, gun safety, farm safety, animal safety, fire prevention, bus safety, respect for law and order, safety in the home, personal safety, playground safety, and much more! Please contact Katie in the Community Ed Office if interested in volunteering at th/ 6th Grade Tackle Football Fall 2012 PEM Bulldog Football and PEM Community Education will once again be sponsoring a tackle football program for our fifth and sixth graders. Our league consists of PEM, St. Charles, Kingsland, Chatfield, Dover-Eyota, Wabasha-Kellogg, Fillmore Central, and Pine Island. The season will start in mid-august and run through mid-october. Practices will mostly be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with games on Saturdays. Cost per player is $ All equipment (with the exception of football shoes) will be provided. Registered players will receive a letter the first week of August with more specific details.
7 Girls Volleyball Camps Grades 3-5 Activity #5058G **This camp will focus on the fundamentals of volleyball. Skill development will be instructed in the following areas: Serving, passing, setting and hitting. A variety of techniques will be emphasized and will include: balanced base, digging, diving, charging and run through. Team strategies include crossing patterns, read, rotational and perimeter defense. The camp will focus on takedowns, escapes, and pinning combinations used in the Bulldog wrestling program. The camp will also have live wrestling and wrestling related games. There will also be instruction in weight training, nutrition, and mental toughness. Please dress for wrestling: clean t-shirts, shorts, and wrestling shoes. Instructors: PEM varsity coaching staff, former PEM High School Wrestling State Champions (Blaine Miller, Jesse Kahn, Ryan Marx ), and College Wrestlers from the local area. 8 ATV Safety Training The Bluff Country ATV Club will be conducting an ATV Safety Training Course on Saturday, October 6 at 9:00am. Effective January 1, 2006, anyone who operates an ATV and is born after July 1, 1987 must complete the ATV Safety Training Course before operating an ATV. This is a required course for youth to ride on state lands and trails. The class is for ATV riders ages 12 and up. 11 year olds may also attend class, but their certificate is not valid until their 12th birthday. Adults who are interested in learning the valuable safety skills are also welcome to sign-up for the class. Students must pre-register with Community Education. Students must also view a DNR safety training CD and print out the quizzes before the day of class. Contact the DNR Information Center at to receive a free copy of the CD. On the day of class, wear sturdy shoes or boots, long pants, and a helmet (if you have one). ATV s will be supplied by the Bluff Country ATV Club for the outdoor training course. Steps to Complete ATV Safety Training: 1) Pre-register with Community Education, and pay the $10 pre-registration fee (payable to PEM Community Ed). 2) Order the DNR Safety Training CD by calling Students must watch the training CD, take the quizzes, print the results, and bring with them to class on October 6. 3) On the day of class, students need to wear appropriate clothing, including sturdy shoes, long pants, and a helmet (if you have one). 4) Upon completion of the October 6th class, go online to register the student with the DNR and pay the $15 fee by charge card or debit card. Girls Soccer Camp Grades 7-12 This camp will provide the opportunity for soccer players to learn basic skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, trapping, and control. It will teach them the strategy of the game so they will better understand the positions and formations. There will also be some conditioning to prepare them for what a Varsity player experiences throughout their practice and, most importantly, the game itself. 9 4-6 Building On May 10, Plainview-Elgin-Millville Elementary School held its annual President s Education Awards Day program and DARE graduation. The President s Education Awards Program is designed to encourage students to achieve their full academic potential. The criteria for an elementary student to receive the award is twofold. First, the student must have attained an A- or 3.5 grade average from fourth grade to the first semester of sixth grade for all academic areas including Math, Reading, Spelling, Language, Social Studies, and Science. Second, the student must have received the highest level on both the Math and Reading MCA Test given in 5th grade. The students who received this award were: Wyatt Evers, Tanner Harcey, Emily Jacob, Jacob Norton, Austin Rother, and Nate Stamschror. We congratulate these students who have shown outstanding achievements during their time here at Plainview-Elgin-Millville Elementary.
