Newsmonger Rotary Club of Seaford September 2012 President s Dispatches CONTENTS President s Dispatches Boot, Craft & Produce Fair Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors Anne Bickmore s ABC Fund Inner Wheel What s On On Friday 3 rd August I went with Mike H and Barry W to the Barn Theatre to give the Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors (SMTJ) a cheque, and to get some publicity photos. This group was formed last year, and is very popular I believe they now have a waiting list for those youngsters wanting to join. They provide an opportunity for kids to get involved in the performing arts, and produce some remarkable talent. They invited me to join in their dress rehearsal so that I could show them how to do it not true, actually, it was more the other way around. Good fun, though! On Wednesday 8 th August, some of our members helped at the Exchange Project to move paving slabs and sand that had just been delivered onto their site. We had helped to purchase these slabs, and when Katie Hoff asked for some assistance to move them, it seemed appropriate that we should try and help. Many thanks to Isla, Andy and Dave Argent for turning up to help. Later the same day we had a fascinating talk by Anne Bickmore of the ABC Children s Trust. She explained how she had started fundraising in order to help children who she was teaching to swim, and how the Trust arose from that. The Trust now helps disadvantaged youngsters and their families in many ways, and the work that she does is inspirational. At last we had decent weather for our latest Car Boot, Craft and Produce Fair! The previous three, in May, June and July were all badly affected by the weather (July s was even cancelled!), so it was a big relief to see a warm, sunny day on Sunday 12 th August. There was a reasonable turn out from both sellers and buyers, and we were able to add nearly 700 to our Trust coffers. Thanks to all who helped. Daphne and I went to the Seaford in Bloom presentations on Tuesday 14 th at Deans Place. It is great to see the enthusiasm to make our town look beautiful at this time of year, not only in private gardens, but also by various businesses. The presentation evening was very well run by Isabel Stephenson (with the aid of computer generated slides this year!), and Ashley gave some very good insight into what the judges look for when judging the various gardens. Seaford in Bloom does a fantastic job, and I m pleased that we continue to support them. The weekend of 18 th 19 th August was a very sporty one. First we were, as usual, running the car park at the Martello Fields for the Triathlon and Half Marathon. There was a very good turnout by the athletes I expect many of them enthused by Team GB s success in the London Olympics. Both fields were filled on the Saturday, and we ended up taking over 1,700. A good result, especially since (as Geoff points out), most of this money comes from outside our town. Many thanks to all who were involved before, during and after the event. It needs a good team effort to make it work, which we certainly gave it. The second sporting event of the weekend was the Seahaven Para Games, held at Wave Leisure at the Downs. This event was initiated by Searchlight last year after they found the Rotary District 1250 Disabled Sports was a bit too competitive for their liking. Since we used to give them a donation to cover transport to the District Sports in the past, it seemed an obvious move to sponsor them in putting on their own Para Games. What an excellent day it was! fuller report on page 7. I was told that August would be a quiet month how wrong can you be! Enjoy your Rotary

Sun Shines again on the boot fair By Bill Pierce It looked like another bad omen for our recently-bedeviled Boot, Craft and Produce Fair. Mrs Juliet Joy, who had booked and paid for two under-cover stalls, contacted us from holiday in Portugal a couple of days before our latest event and said she had broken two toes and couldn t attend after all. Then the Bouncy Castle failed to turn up. And the substitute Fast Food man (not our reliable Lefty who was on holiday this time) turned up too late to catch the hungry breakfast trade. Finally, Mr Music Man who brought such fun to the proceedings in April before losing all his sound-equipment, arrived on the promise of hooking up to our Club vehicle s electronics only to find it couldn t be done. All we needed now was another big downpour like the one which washed out July s event. But thankfully that never happened, the sun came out, we all put our hats on and August s Boot Fair was a big hit again just like in the old days. Old days? Well, we ve only been presenting them for just over a year. Yet they already feel like part of our staple fund-raising diet. And it is great when we finish up with a large chunk of cash to add to our charitable funds. Thanks to all, Rotarians, stallholders, customers et al we did it again. Thanks, most of all, though to Mr Sunshine. Please come again. Mrs Joy? We ll see you, we very much hope, on Sunday September 16, with best foot forward for the next Fair (and the last this year) If only we could find a way to hook up with Mr Music Man as well. He was so understanding about the disappointment and after all he entertains for absolute free. We would love to get him back. That would be Joy unbounded. 3
Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors About a year ago the Rotary Club of Seaford received a request for funding from the Seaford Musical Theatre, based at the Barn Theatre, to start a new section for youngsters in Seaford. We were delighted to oblige with a donation of 250, and the SMT Juniors project got started. This summer, the Club received a further request from Paula Woolven on behalf of the Seaford Musical Theatre Juniors. Their number has doubled to 30 and their minimal cost ensures that the theatre opportunity is available to all, however their popularity means they now have a waiting list for spaces and they are now looking for way to accommodate extra members By Mike Hemmings, Entertainment Correspondent The Rotary Club of Seaford has therefore agreed to give a further grant of 250 to go towards training, costumes, props and other charges that Seaford Musical Theatre incurs in running the Junior section. On Friday evening 3 August, Club President Paul Vaesen went along to donate the cheque, and to demonstrate his theatrical skills. Strangely, a suggestion that he should join the Juniors to hone those skills was dismissed. Photos by Barry Wells 4
Anne Bickmore's ABC Fund By the Editor Anne came to the Club on Wednesday 8 August 2012 to talk about her charity Anne Bickmore's Children's Fund (ABC Fund) which she founded in It all started when Anne was teaching children to swim, and found that some of their families did not have enough money to pay for their ASA qualifications. So she persuaded some sponsors to hire Newhaven Pool raise money to help with this, and raised 500. Time passed, and she was raising more and more money, so she decided to start her registered charity. Now the ABC Fund undertakes many varied activities to relieve poverty hardship and distress within the UK among children, young people, and their families or carers, particularly those with disabilities or special needs. These activities include Colouring booklets for children in hospitals Trauma Teds for injured children Trips out to the seaside, Chessington, Science Museum, X Factor etc. etc. "Do we have to go home?" was the cry from one youngster Eastbourne Theatre Pantomime - currently she books 394 seats each year! The cast give each child a present at the end of the performance Respite care for parents/carers Christmas hampers (currently 87 ) for children's families who cannot afford Christmas fare All children are referred by Social Services, Chestnut Tree House or other agencies. For the future, ABC Fund is an Official Partner for the Brighton Marathon. Many thanks Anne for an inspirational talk, we wish you and your charity well for the future. We hope you continue to put a smile on the faces of families who live with illness and disabilities day in and day out, year in and year out. Photo by Mike Hemmings 5
The Exchange Project By President Paul Sun, Sand & Sea? More like Rain, Sand & Slabs when on Wednesday 8th August, some of our members helped at the Exchange Project to move paving slabs and sand that had just been delivered onto their site. We had helped to purchase the paving slabs, and when Katie Hoff asked for some assistance when they were delivered, it seemed appropriate that we should try and help. The Exchange Project has done (and continues to do) excellent work in developing their garden with the help of local disadvantaged people. It is a joy to see the enthusiasm of all concerned, and we are pleased to help them. 7 Seahaven Para Games Sunday 19 th August This event was initiated by Searchlight last year after they found the Rotary District 1250 Disabled Sports was a bit too competitive for their liking. Since we used to give them a donation to cover transport to the District Sports in the past, it seemed an obvious move to sponsor them in putting on their own Para Games. The Games were opened by Eddie Kidd waving his Olympic Torch, which was followed by Kurling organised by Seaford Kurlers. We then had a basketball demonstration from Jan Laycock, who is an International level player, and the 26 participants then tried their hand. After a buffet lunch, there was Boccia, organised by Lewes Boccia, and the Games were concluded by the Wheelchair Slalom, which some of the non-participants had a go at as well! Then all the athletes were presented with certificates and badges, before wending their way home. What an excellent day it was strictly non-competitive (which means everyone is a winner!) and there was a great feeling of friendship and goodwill. A big thank you to all the hard work from Sarah Pearce and her team at Wave Leisure to make this happen, to Seaford Kurlers, Jan Laycock and Lewes Boccia for organising the individual Games, and to all the carers, helpers and supporters (including the Rotarians who were there). A truly memorable day. 7
