1 From the President Well, another year flew by in record time. We had a nice break from cueing during the holidays and we are back to our regular schedule. January, February and March all have festivals that have been or will be keeping us busy. We just finished January Jewel in Shreveport. By the time this newsletter is released, the Houston Festival will be over and our attention will turn to TRDTA South in La Grange at the end of February. March will bring Pot of Gold in Houston. Before we know it, summer will be knocking on the door. Maybe that is why the year goes by so quickly. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in La Grange. JL and Linda Pelton did a great job handling the voting and are finalizing the program. It is going to be another great weekend. Martha & Ed Koslosky Notice of TRDTA Meeting February 23, 2019 Randolph Center La Grange, Texas Immediately following the afternoon teach, there will be a TRDTA meeting. It will be as short as possible. There will be some items up for voting. If you have any agenda items you wish to put on the agenda, please let the Jerry Pate, our illustrious secretary, know so he can include that information. Festival Reports 28th January Jewel Shreveport, LA January 18-19, 2019 Not a Texas Festival but it is close enough By Martha Koslosky This year s festival featured the Tres Cuer-ritas aka Jerry and Lucy Pate, Ed & Martha Koslosky and Marvin & Tammy Lee. The Friday night program started with a skit performed by three versions of Laurel and Hardy in full costume of course. Tammy and Marvin choreographed a dance routine to Let s Twist Again that included audience participation at the end. There are some videos that show that the twist is alive and well. Newsletter February 2019 Page 1

2 The dances taught that weekend were: Jerry and Lucy Pate Heartbreak Hotel, WCS, Parker Shoo Fly Pie, 3 FT, Ross Ed & Martha Koslosky Falling Into You Rumba, 3 RB, Koslosky One Heart Cha, 4 CH, McKenrick Marvin & Tammy Lee I Want To Stroll Over Heaven With You, 2+2 WZ, Ritchie Supermarket Flowers, STS, Lee Marvin Lee provided a special treat for the dancers on Saturday night. He sang You Decorated My Life while Tammy cued the dance choreographed by Ed & Karen Gloodt. It was very special as Marvin has a wonderful singing voice. I am happy to report that neither Jerry nor Ed sang. The festival ended with a wonderful pizza and ice cream party. Next year s festival will be January 17-18, 2020 and will feature Fred and Linda Ayres from Longview, Tx and other visiting cuers. The Red River Rounders hosted a great weekend and we all had a lot of fun. Houston Festival By Tammy Lee The 67th annual Houston Round Dance Festival, the longest continuously running festival in the world, was held in Houston, February 1-2, Billed as the Three Texas Lady Cuers, Tammy and Marvin Lee, Martha and Ed Koslosky, and Kay and Ski Kurczewski cued Friday night s early rounds. Not to be outdone, of course, were the Four Texas Male Cuers, Ron and Pat Plouch, Randy and Rose Wulf, Jack and Sharie Kenny. and Fred and Linda Ayers, who warmed up the Saturday night program with early rounds. Hosts Paul and Linda Robinson, along with all of the Texas cuers provided the Friday night program while Paul Robinson and Curt Worlock shared the Saturday evening program. The featured clinicians were Curt and Tammy Worlock. Curt and Tammy provided excellent instruction for two really nice dances. The first was their own choreography, Get Down Tonight, a lively phase 5 Quickstep and the beautiful A Lady in Red, a phase 4 Bolero by Brent and Judy Moore. It s looking good for the 68th annual Houston Round Dance Festival in 2020 with Curt and Tammy returning as featured clinicians. Cuing News a-round Texas News a-round Texas includes all information from cuer members about their lessons and club received by the newsletter deadline which is the end of the month before the mid-month publication date February, April, June, August, October, and December. If you are interested in attending a club in Texas, please contact the cuer for the most up-to-date information on venue and nights dancing. Many clubs might be closed on the date you want to visit as venues change and unexpected closures happen, or someone is simply not teaching that particular month. Newsletter February 2019 Page 2

Kay and Bob Kurczewski Liberty Hill, TX Contact roundsbyskis@juno.com The Christmas Holiday season kept us hopping. We kept our normal Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday workshop schedule, along with our Thursday afternoon Party dances. On Saturday evening, the 21st of December, we hosted our annual Christmas Party dance with Ski s famous flaming wine, which he learned to make when we lived in Germany. We brought in the New Year with a Special Square and Round Dance evening. Kay was on the Rounds, and Randy Dougherty came up from the valley and shared the mic with Dan Clairmont. A great time was held by all. January the dancers spent most of their time preparing for the Houston Round Dance Festival to be held on the 1st and 2nd of February. Jerry and Lucy Pate Round Rock, TX Contact jpate1207@att.net Due to the high demand for our dance hall during the Christmas and New Year s party time, we were unable to dance in December and early January. But we re back into the swing of things again. We started 2019 with several fun dances at the Sun City Sun Dancer s square and round dance club and Georgetown s Shirts & Skirts square and round dance club. We also cued at the Rhythm Records Winter Festival in Waco. We teamed up with Martha and Ed Koslosky and Marvin and Tammy Lee at the January Jewel Round Dance Festival in Shreveport, LA. That festival was a real Hoot, lots of dancing and lots of learning for the phase 2-4 dancers. The higher level dancers that were there, were very supportive and important to the upcoming newer dancers. They got a real boost in confidence with all the positive comments. It makes a big difference when the positive comments comes from a higher level dancer. We all felt so encouraged that round dancing may again be on the way UP in popularity and hopefully growth. 7 At the Rhythm Records Winter Festival in Waco Baby Beluga, Phase 3 Two Step by Hilton, Joe & Pat This is fun music to really fun choreography, including Fishtail, Strolling-vine, Susie-Q, Left Turning Box, and the eight measures Vine sequence. Bim Baddy Boom, Phase 3+2 Cha Cha by Byrd, Doug & Cheryl Lively music that makes you want to cha cha, good choreography including the Alemana, Triple Chas, and several dance steps in 4. Foolish Heart, Phase 4+2 Rumba by Townsend-Manning, Mary & Bob Great romantic music with a strong rumba rhythm and great choreography including Trade Places, Latin Whisk, Sit Line, Hockey Stick, Cucaracha Cross, several Rumba figures in 4, Develope, Cross Body, and a Cross Basic. We even learned the correct Roundalab way of doing the Cross Basic, which isn t the way we see it being danced by many dancers, thank goodness we checked the Roundalab definition before we taught it. At the January Jewel Round Dance Festival in Shreveport, LA Heartbreak Hotel, Phase 4 West Coast Swing by Parker, Casey & Sharon This is an introduction to West Coast dance with fun music and really fun choreography, including only about 6 West Coast figures, Throw Out, Sugar Push, Sugar Tuck and Spin, Underarm Turn, Left Side Pass, Wrapped Whip, and some crazy Turkey walks. This dance followed a short West Coast Swing rhythm clinic, that everyone seemed to enjoy. Shoo Fly Pie, Phase 3 Foxtrot by Ross, Doug & Cheryl A really great foxtrot song and good choreography including a Back Hover to closed position that caught me off guard several times. Time only permitted for a Cue and Do session for this dance. If needed, ask your cuer to spend a little more time on this one, but watch out for that Back Hover. Four other very good dances were also taught at this festival by Martha & Ed Koslosky and Tammy & Marvin Lee, so be sure to read their article in this newsletter. We ll be teaching several rounds during the workshop, and cueing rounds between tips. Then, we ll see many of you at the TRDTA Round Dance Festival in La Grange. That s a fun festival spotlighting some of our newer, as well as our experienced cuers. It s a great opportunity to promote and support all our wonderful round dancers, all our Texas cuers and teachers, and our choreographers. This is a Phase 2-4 round dance festival, dedicated to offering experience to the newer cuer/teacher, but we need all the round dancers to attend to keep this activity growing and to encourage the newer dancers. Last year, we voted to include one of Roundalab s wonderful classic dances into the dance program. So please come on out and join in the fun. Help us to make everyone feel welcomed and important, and the best way to do that is to dance together. Then on March 1st & 2nd, join us in Tool, Texas for the Annual Mardi Gras Madness square and round dance festival, and then off to Houston on March for the Annual Pot-Of-Gold Round Dance Festival. There will be plenty of shamrocks for yer! Happy Dancing Y all! JL and Linda Pelton Dallas, TX Contact peltondances@gmail.com With any luck Dance Arounds will again be dancing on Thursday nights at the newly renovated and renamed Senior Center in Plano. Our dancers are so ready to move back to Thursdays at an earlier time. One of our faithful dance members teaches water aerobics on Tuesdays and has hung in arriving late with a wet head just to keep dancing. We are just as ready to move too. They started out saying it would be by the end of December, then they said in February, and now we have been given the date of March 21st. We ll just have to see if the construction crew can manage to finish the building but at least it is now enclosed. In November we were still looking through the building with part of the walls not existing.
