1 From the President The Thanksgiving leftovers should all be gone by now and thoughts are turning to the Christmas season and another opportunity to spend time with family and friends. We took the time to reflect on God s blessing of providing us with such a wonderful round dancing community. Our dancing friends are truly the best. Year 2018 is rapidly coming to an end. We have had many successful weekend round dance festivals during the year and a Roundalab/ ICBDA convention held in nearby Oklahoma. It really was a great year for dancing and learning and there are still a few weeks left. Enjoy the many Christmas parties coming up and keep dancing to help use up all of the extra calories. Most importantly, take some time off to recharge as 2019 is approaching full speed. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Happy New Year Martha & Ed Koslosky From the Treasurer As of November 1, 2018, nine TRDTA members still have unpaid dues. If you wish to remain listed as a member of TRDTA, please ensure Tammy receives your $15 TRDTA dues by December 15, If you are unsure whether your dues are current, please contact Tammy at tammy.lee@swbell.net. 2 Editor s Notes Couldn t resist the graphic Were you naughty or nice when you submitted your dance information? Did you check your submission to be sure you were using the requested format? Did you make sure the dance names were spelled correctly, and that you typed in the correct rhythm and phase? The sad truth is some did... and some were.. well, they were just a little bit Naughty. It saves me lots of time when I can just cut and paste your information into my file. Everything then matches in the compiled lists of dances taught from everyone and for dances taught in beginner lessons. Then, it s easier for both Tammy and JL to use these lists to help put together their dance voting list for Centex and TRDTA South. Please, please, don t use tabs or multiple spaces, or color your text. Here s the most appreciated format: Dance name, phase level, rhythm, and choreographer s last name For example Sam s New Pants, 4 FT, Finch Bolero is really BL, not Body Odor (that s how I remember it s not BO), and Foxtrot is FT, not FX for Fox... and I think you get the picture. Thank you so much for helping out. The next date for your submission to the newsletter is January 31 with a planned release date of early February. Remember that, without you, there is no news in the newsletter. Festival Reports Centex By Tammy Lee The 31st Annual Centex festival was held in La Grange, TX on Oct 12-14, There were 89 paid attendees. Randy and Marie Preskitt were the featured clinicians. Randy and Marie taught their own fun Phase V Jive, Why Did It Have To Be Me and Life Is A Slow Dance, a pretty Phase IV Waltz by the Worlocks. Even the drizzly weather couldn t put a dampener (pun intended) on the exciting atmosphere as friends came from all around the area and from other states to dance to old favorites and to newer material. The Sunday morning review was especially beneficial to reinforce the two new dances that were taught. Centex 2018 was bittersweet as we said goodbye and thanks to the Prows and Taylors who had organized the festival for 13 years. The baton was passed to Martha and Ed Koslosky and Tammy and Marvin Lee who will continue hosting the Centex Round Dance Festival along with the generous support and help from other cuers and dancers. Next year s 32nd annual Centex festival will be October 11-13, 2019 and is already over 60% sold out. Rey and Sherry Garza are the featured clinicians in The flyer can be found by clicking the Dance Flyers tab on the TRDTA website or click this link to directly open the pdf: Newsletter December 2018 Page 2
3 Harvest Holiday Festival Dallas, Texas November 23-25, 2018 By Christine Hixson The 58th Harvest Holiday Festival was held at the Sokol Hall in Dallas, Texas, over Thanksgiving weekend, November The pre-festival activities held November included evening dances Monday through Thursday, and daytime teaches, also called impromptus, during the day Tuesday through Thursday, were held at Swingtime Center in Fort Worth. The entire week of dancing activities were a great success, and our thanks to all who came to join in the fun. Thanksgiving week is always a great week of dancing in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and we enjoy the opportunity to get together with our dancing friends, both locally and from all over the country. In addition to our Texas friends, we had attendees from Maryland, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Florida. This year the daytime pre-festival impromptu instructors and dances taught were as follows: JL and Linda Pelton A Dream of Yesteryear, WZ, Pelton Ron and Marilou Webb Can t Help Falling In Love, 6 HCW, Webb Karen and Ed Gloodt The Alligator Stroll, WCS, Gloodt Chris Jopek/Steve Davis 42nd Street 4 You, 4+2 QS, Rotscheid Jack and Sharie Kenny Egyptian Lady, 6 RB, Kenny Christine and Theron Hixson Warm and Willing, 5+1 WZ, Childers/Slotsve Oldie 1995, HOF 2015 The official part of the Festival requiring registration is from Friday afternoon through Sunday noon. This year the clinicians were David Goss and Ulla Figwer. They did an excellent job of teaching their two newly-choreographed dances: Our Time, a beautiful Phase VI waltz, and Something Good, a fun Phase V+1 jive. Both dances were very well received by all the dancers, and we look forward to dancing them many times in the future. Next year, November 29-December 1, 2019, the Festival clinicians will be Randy and Marie Preskitt, and we re looking forward to another successful Harvest Holiday Festival. Mark your calendar now and make plans to join us next Thanksgiving for fun, fellowship and dancing. Kay and Bob Kurczewski Liberty Hill, TX Contact roundsbyskis@juno.com All we can say is that it has been one hectic of a late summer early fall for us these past few months. The reporting date snuck up on us in September and we never submitted our teaches. We were busy making final plans for our tour to Europe towards the end of September. We were able to send a short message back to you, from Europe, but we did not have any of our teach information with us. We are including those teaches in this issue of the Newsletter. Our tour to Europe was just unbelievable. We had some of the most beautiful weather we have ever had on our tours. It was hard to believe that even leaving a week later than normal, we would be running around in short sleeve shirts. It was just beautiful weather. With the weather so nice we are going to push our luck and we are already working on doing this again next year. We are planning on leaving the tour on the 24th of September for 23 days. If any of you are interested in going on a great trip to Europe let us know and we can provide you the necessary information. We are now planning on our New Year s Eve Dance with Randy Dougherty, Dan Clairmont on Squares, Plus with announced A2, and Kay on the Rounds. If you are interested in attending, please let us know so we can reserve your spot. We have been working figure clinics in Slow Two Step, Tango and just started a Jive Clinic with our different groups. We love figure clinics because we believe if you learn the figures, then all you need are the gimmicks (if there are any) and you can do dances. With 15 couples signed up, 9 of them had no dance experience of any kind and were not square dancers. Many of them really wanted ballroom waltz to take out on the social ballroom dance floor, although we are converting some of them to cued dance moves. Consequently, we initially worked on amalgamations they could use wherever they might end up dancing. Here s the dances they now can dance: Newsletter December 2018 Page 9

It has really wonderful music. We also introduced a ballroom figure, Progressive Chasse Right followed by a Back Lock Back. Think Turn Left Right Chasse BJO with an extra back step for the man (forward step for the lady). Then the next figure is Back, Back/Lock Back. The first back is the last step of the Progressive Chasse Right. The dancers had no trouble with the change in cue terms once they had the explanation, however, we have chosen to document that option in the cuesheet to match Roundalab preferred cue terms.
