1 February- March Highlights Taft s AVID Program- Excellence in Leadership and Academics Academic Achievements Taft s AVID Honor Roll 1 st Semester Number of AVID students who have at least a Number of AVID students who have at least a 4.0 Alyssa Sy (AVID IV) and Rozan Deeb (AVID I) won 1 st place at the CPS Regional Science Fair. Rachel Daley, Maya Henson-Belter, and Marilyn Segarra went to a writing competition/workshop called SPAC for Taft s Newspaper. Marilyn was in the competition for Features journalism. The Juniors (AVID III) are accessing and utilizing BenchPrep for rocking the ACT's. Bonnie Regan (AVID IV)- Advanced to the 2 nd round of the Chicago History Fair Outside of School Accomplishments Maria Robbins (AVID II) volunteers at the Field Museum. Congratulations! Sybel Sanchez (AVID IV) won 1 st place at her Synchronized swimming competition
2 Athletics at THS Valerie Kanarowski (AVID IV), Lizzi Wronkowski, Amy Sterling, Alexia Anerson, and Haley Mayrens (AVID I) were members of Taft s bowling team that finished 4 th in CPS Nico Gallo competed at the Illinois State Championships in wrestling. Talya Reyes Rofo and Alondra Guevara are varsity soccer captains Kyle Lange (AVID IV)- Member of the bowling team that placed 2nd in CPS Elise Delgado and Veronica Boogs are on Taft's Softball team. Gavin Brodersen and Tony Ross are on the water polo team. Congratulations to Brodersen on his recent goal against Lincoln Park. Joey Jastrzebski, Jack Suwinski, and Jack Philiips are on Taft s lacrosse team. Stephanie Wilczynski (AVID III) and Emily Vasquez (AVID III) competed in the City Championship Finals for Poms and placed 2nd Frankie Paolucci (AVID III) is now a member of the JV Baseball team! Michelle Gonzalez (AVID I) made the JV women s soccer team at THS
3 Kate Williams and Eustathia Kaldis (AVID I) 3 rd place at the City cheerleading cheer competition at CSU. As a member of the YMCA Leaning Tower Swim Team, Aishling Martinez won first place in her district. Congrats! College Updates Attended the National Hispanic College Fair (AVID III students) Maria Garcia, Sarah Foy, Megan Foy, Celeste Castillo, Baylasan Abughabli, Tajour Brown, Jovany Bucio, Monnique Ovalle, Roberto Juarez, Miguel Romero, and David Cruzat. Natalie Ingravallo- Accepted into both St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Loyola University s Pharmacy Programs Martin Hernandez Accepted into University of Illinois at Springfield and Northeastern Illinois University Edisa Dracic- Accepted to both DePaul and UIC. Will be attending DePaul University Susana Sosa Accepted and headed to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Jenna Kisler- Accepted at Northeastern Illinois University. Go Eagles!!! 4 The Arts Josue Quintero and Carmen Fuentes (AVID IV) have roles in Taft s production of the Sound of Music Erica Mendez (AVID IV) choreographed the dance numbers at St. Patrick High School s production of Jesus Christ Superstar Bridgett Hennessy (AVID II) participated in Taft's Winter One Act Play Festival in the play "The Flood". Great job! Danuta Polan (AVID IV) --Received a honors superior award through Gallery 37 Vocal Arts Ensemble Achievements in Leadership Harmony Gonzalez (AVID II) participated in the Norwood Park St. Patrick's Day parade as a member of Taft's Marching band. And Melanie Hidalgo (AVID II) will represent the JROTC in the Memorial Day parade. Thanks for representing Taft HS! Kyle Moorhouse (AVID II) is participating in the Annual Pancake Breakfast event, raising funds for the Boy Scouts Summer Camp. This exciting event will take place on Sunday, April 6th from 8AM-3PM at Queen of All Saints. Please see Kyle for more details, check it out!
5 Congratulations to the AVID III students and their teacher who donated over twenty inches of hair to Locks of Love and Pantene: 9" Olivia Martin, 11" Mrs. Lane, 17" Molly Haneberg Abigail Tinajero (AVID I) collected over 3,000 books for Bernie s Book Bank through her AVID I Impact project Breannin Mahoney (AVID IV) Taft NJROTC drill team commander. Individually took 2 nd place in Area 3 Drill Meet for unarmed knockout. Drill Team took 3 rd overall. Student Government Members (Shannon Staunton, Bonnie Regan, Georgia Lozano, and Vernoica Pena) raised over $2,000 for Erik Lucansky s family Field Trips and Team Building Experiences AVID I will be visiting UIC April 21 st and 22nd AVID III attended DePaul University March 6 th and 13 th (See next page for photo)
6 AVID Seniors went on the Neighborhood Exchange program with students from Hubbard High School. The students get the chance to teach the Hubbard students about Taft s local community as well as learn from those students about Hubbard s local community.
