However, it would be much appreciated if you would consider their privacy, particularly on Friday evenings, which is Shabbat (Sabbath) and generally a time spent with family and friends away from work and dance commitments. 2 MICHIKO DANCER, TEACHER, FRIEND A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you. (Elbert Hubbard) I m not sure when Michiko came into my life but I am sure of how much she has enhanced it. Not only is she a beautiful and elegant dancer but a wonderful friend, to me and to all the members of Hora Shalom and to anyone who has crossed her path. It was our good fortune when Michiko and her husband, David, decided to make their home here in Perth as she is indeed a special human being. I have met few people with the attributes of Michiko. Her generosity and kindness to everybody is unsurpassed. I m sure we all aspire to dance as she does and, as a teacher, she gives us hope! Her partner classes are an institution and hopefully will continue in her absence. Apart from her dancing and teaching, Michiko has been a regular visitor to Israel for the Karmiel Dance festival, and has a special connection to the country and its people. She is learning to speak the Hebrew language and is a member of WIZO, a women s group which fundraises for underprivileged women and children in Israel. On a personal note, Michiko has been an amazing friend to me and we have spent many happy hours together. Her selflessness, joy for life and fun company will never be forgotten. She will always be in my heart. Michiko, all the dancers at Hora Shalom will miss you immensely. We wish you happiness in your new home in Tasmania and hope you will visit us often. Lehitraot, Mich! Ruth Cohen STAY COOL & SAFE THIS SUMMER With the hot weather and no air-conditioning, it is essential that you maintain your fluid intake and wear fabrics that breathe. And, of course, for your own comfort and that of your fellow dancers, a spray of deodorant and a freshly washed shirt or top are highly recommended! Your dance footwear should ensure you stay safe as you perform grapevines and Yemenite steps. Dance sneakers with a split sole are highly recommended but a closed shoe or sandal with good flexibility and support is a viable alternative. PARTNER CLASSES IN 2013 It is hoped that Partner classes will continue, despite losing the driving force behind the class, Michiko, to Tasmania. 3 DANCING FOR SENIORS WEEK Eight Hora Shalom dancers helped make Seniors Week even more spectacular. (Fortunately the age was dropped to over 45!) Ady, Jenny S, Margaret, Michiko, Philippa, Robert, Ros and Trish strutted their stuff three times: twice at Burswood Have a Go Day and once for the Baptist Seniors group. The workshops that followed the performances at Burswood were most successful and resulted in a new dancer joining us on Saturdays! Dee, Esther, Gay, Ruth G and Sylvia helped with the workshop. The day was not without its challenges. It meant a very early start to set up at Burswood, and our machine spat the dummy at but we soldiered on bravely to splendid applause and praise. An extremely helpful Francis from the Seniors Ballroom Group let us use their superior music equipment but made us dance during the break (which we did with glee!) We have been invited back for Margaret Glenister Where ever you go, I will go... Donald and Sheryl have gone... and got married! On a very hot day, Sunday 30 December, long-time Hora Shalom dancer, Donald, and Rabbi Sheryl were married by Melbourne-based Rabbi Aviva Kipen in Fremantle, in the building that was the site of the first synagogue built by Western Australia s Jewish families in A group of Hora Shalom dancers were delighted to be invited to dance at the wedding and help the happy couple and Rabbi Sheryl s two children celebrate the occasion. Teachers Jenni, Margaret, Michiko and Jenny taught guests a few simple dances; Michiko and Tully and Jenny and Navnit performed a partner dance; and the whole group danced with the other guests, with the celebrations culminating with the Wedding Hora, Hora Chatuna. We wish the newlyweds and their families good health and happiness! 3

4 SHULA S VISIT In November, we welcomed Shula, who came to Perth for her granddaughter s birthday. Shula and partner, Moshe, run Machol Dance Club in Melbourne and have led three workshops for Hora Shalom in Perth over the past ten years, all to great acclaim. They have brought us enduring dances Isha Al Hachof, At Cheruti, Yassu Hachayim, Giv a Achat and many others in the Hora Shalom repertoire. Shula only had time to attend our Saturday class, teaching the lively dance Tzchorat Kanaf, which has become a popular favourite at each of our classes. Shula s clear teaching style and passion for Israeli dance are always inspiring, and we hope to welcome both her and Moshe back to Perth soon. Meanwhile, Shula extended We danced with Shula! an invitation to Hora Shalom and all Perth dancers to attend Machol s workshop in June 2013, which will feature Israeli choreographers Elad Shtamer and Yaron Malichi.
