2 2011 Summer Reading Club Saturday, June 18 through August 19 Read books of your choice and win great prizes. Register and record your book reviews online ( If you are looking for a good book to read, be sure to pick up a booklist in Teen Services or ask one of our friendly staff for a recommendation. Fill your summer with some great reads! PROGRAM REGISTRATION All teen programs that require advance registration will now register online or by telephone only. Register for June and July programs beginning Saturday, June 4. Register for August programs beginning Saturday, June 11. All registrations will take place online or by telephone, beginning at 9:30 a.m. In person registration for any remaining programs will begin at noon of both days. Payment for teen trips must be made within 3 days of registration or your spot will be cancelled. No reminder calls will be made. Some programs have limited registration. Teens may register for three programs at one time. Restrictions will be lifted beginning June 10 for June and July programs and June 17 for August programs at 9:30 a.m. At that time you may register by phone or online for additional programs. Multiple registrations per teen, per registration date before June 10 and June 17 will result in the Library deleting your additional programs at our discretion. Teen programs are open to all teens entering sixth through twelfth grades in September You will need a teen barcode to register for all programs. If you are entering sixth grade in September, you may upgrade your library card to Teen. Your new card will give you access to Teen programs and computers in Teen Services. Alternate Ticket Policy There will be no waitlists for the summer programs. We often have spaces available on program days due to cancellations and no-shows. Alternate tickets are given out 15 minutes prior to the start of the program in Teen Services. Once the program starts, we will determine how many alternate ticket holders can be admitted. No guarantees can be made. Helpful Hints for Registration: 1. Obtain, renew or update your teen library card before the registration dates. 2. Have you moved recently? Changed your phone number? Have an address? Update your family s information on each library record online or in-person at the library. 3. To register online, have your teen Sachem library card handy and go to the Library s website: From the main page click on Register for a Program and enter in the program name or program code. 4. To register by phone, please have your teen barcode ready. 5. If you wish to receive a confirmation notice for the programs for which you registered, you must have an address on file at the time of registration. Summer Trips * Tickets for teen trips are limited and restricted to teens. Interested parents/guardians may have their names entered into a lottery, if space permits. *Don t forget, all fees must be paid within three days of registration with a signed parental permission slip. Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom Thursday, July 28 7 a.m. to approx. 10 p.m. $55 Program code: SAT189 Spend the day with friends enjoying an exciting variety of rides and attractions, great entertainment and a top-rated water park. This promises to be a memorable experience for all. Travel in an air-conditioned bus with movies for your entertainment. Non-refundable fee includes bus and admission ticket for rides and water park. Teen Trip to NYC and Wonderland Wednesday, August 10 10:30 a.m. to approx. 6:30 p.m. $65 Image source: Photo by Michal Daniel Program code: SAT306 Enjoy a fun lunch at Hard Rock Café followed by a rousing performance of the new show Wonderland: Alice Through A Whole New Looking Glass. This spectacular new musical is an exciting new spin on the classic story of Alice and is about a modern-day woman who goes on a life-changing adventure far below the streets of New York City. Teens must bring cash for lunch. Non-refundable fee includes round trip on a coach bus and admission to the play. 1
4 Summer Crafts The following programs are open to all teens, unless noted. Tie-dye Workshop Program code: SAT248 Create different patterns using a variety of colors and techniques. You will go home with a unique T-shirt and headband that you can proudly wear all summer long. (1 hour) Tuesday, June 28 at 6 or 7:30 p.m. Good Luck Asian Bracelet Program code: SAT311 Using colorful beads and stones, make a beautiful Asian inspired bracelet. You will also receive a colorful pouch to keep it in. (1 hour) Tuesday, July 12 at 2 or 3:30 p.m. Getting Around Leather Cuffs Program code: SAT326 Using paper transit maps, tattoo themed images and metal stampers, be creative and glam up your personal leather cuff. (1 hour) Wednesday, July 13 at 4:30 p.m. Exotic Shampoo and Conditioner Program code: SAT302 Transform your damaged locks into pure health by creating your own custom tailored shampoo and conditioner. Each shampoo and conditioner is a personalized mixture to meet your needs and treat specific areas of your hair. (2 1/2 hours) Wednesday, July 20 at 3 p.m. Origami Around the World (7th grade and up only) Program code: SAT315 Origami is the Japanese name for folded paper. It originated in China, but the art of origami flourished in Japan and spread to many other countries. Fold origami from Russia, Italy, Hungary, Germany to name a few, or discover origami from the land of your heritage! (1 hour) Tuesday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. Macrame (7th grade and up only) Traditional Mehndi Workshop Program code: SAT211 Mehndi is the ancient, cultural and artistic tradition of henna body painting that has been practiced for thousands of years by many different cultures around the world. Learn some of the techniques of henna, practice on yourself or your friends and leave with a new henna tattoo. Henna is an all natural non-toxic vegetable based dye that can last up to three weeks. Signed permission slips are required before the class. Tuesday, July 19 at 3 p.m. Program code: SAT317 Macrame is believed to have originated with Arab weavers. It is a form of textile-making using knotting rather than weaving or knitting. In this workshop you will learn macramé and make a necklace that you will be proud to wear all summer. (2 1/2 hours) Wednesday, July 27 at 6 p.m. Beaded Messenger Bag Program code: SAT313 Using beads, buttons and other embellishments, you will create and decorate a canvas messenger bag. With a wide variety of colorful patterns and bold symbols, you will make your own style statement. Friday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. 2

Summer Crafts (continued) 3D Butterfly Mirror Frame Program code: SAT328 Make this delightful craft that you will proudly display in your room. All materials are included. Monday, August 1 at 7 p.m. Copper Bookmarks Program code: SAT308 Create beautiful and personalized bookmarks to mark your place in the book you are reading. Mold copper strips into bookmarks and embellish them with beads. You will go home with two unique bookmarks one to keep and one to give as a gift. (1 hour) Wednesday, August 3 at 3:30 p.m. Foot Loose and Fancy Pedicures Program code: SAT253 Everyone likes to show off their toes during the warm summer months. You can learn how to take care of your feet at home. You will take home a complete pedicure kit. Monday, August 15 at 3 p.m. Airbrush your own T-shirt Program code: SAT307 We provide the stencils, shirts, airbrush paints and all the gear needed so that you can leave with your own T-shirt that YOU airbrushed! Monday, August 15 at 6 p.m. Eau de Toilette Custom Fragrances Program code: SAT303 Learn to custom blend your own artisan perfume utilizing a wide range of fragrance oils. The combination of the fragrance oils will create a personal blend that is as different and unique as you are. Monday, August 8 at 4 or 6 p.m. Make your own Body Wash and Lotion Program code: SAT304 Your skin will be soft and pretty when you use your custom blended body wash and lotion. Create a unique and personalized blend rich with exotic and natural ingredients of your choice. (2 1/2 hours) Tuesday, August 16 at 6 p.m. Mechanical Robots Program code: SAT309 Each participant will build and go home with their own mechanical robot that runs on batteries. No soldering is required in this workshop. Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m. Goth Wristlets Program code: SAT331 Create a goth inspired leather wristband using metal stamps and decorative brads. Goth style symbols, text and color schemes will be explored in this fun program. (1 hour) Wednesday, August 10 at 6 p.m. 3
6 4 COMPUTER CLASSES Computer Animation Program code: SAT210 Learn how to use your computer to create web-based computer animation. Create and edit animated GIF s and much more. (2 hours) Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. Make a Music Video Program code: SAT208 In this hands-on class, you will take computer graphics, images and music and create a music video. Bring your own song or pictures on a flash drive if you wish. (2 hours) Wednesday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m. COOKING CLASSES Travel around the world, taste and learn how to make dishes and desserts from various countries. All the cooking classes are hands-on workshops. Homemade Apple Crisp Program code: SAT319 Make this all-american favorite dessert consisting of baked apples topped with a crispy crust. (1 hour) Thursday, July 7 at 7 p.m. Crepes Program code: SAT320 Happy Bastille Day! Celebrate this French national holiday by making traditional French pancakes known as crepes. (1 hour) Thursday, July 14 at 7 p.m. Homemade Ice Cream Program code: SAT321 July is National Ice Cream Month. Make soft serve ice cream and create toppings to enjoy your creation. (1 hour) Tuesday, July 19 at 7 p.m. Cannolis Program code: SAT322 Cannolis are Italian and Sicilian pastry desserts. You will make the cream, stuff the shells and garnish them. (1 hour) Tuesday, July 26 at 7 p.m. Churros Program code: SAT323 Churros are Spanish pastries that you will make with cinnamon sugar or chocolate. (1 hour) Wednesday, August 3 at 7 p.m. Asian Cooking Program code: SAT329 Learn how to cook simple Lao dishes. You will make quickly seared chicken, shrimp and vegetables with teriyaki sauce. Finish the evening off with a pumpkin pudding dessert.(2 hours) Friday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. Salsa and Chips Program code: SAT324 Make this Mexican favorite at the library. Sample some and take the rest home to enjoy. (1 hour) Thursday, August 11 at 7 p.m. Simple Lao Cooking Program code: SAT330 Make a fondue with chicken, shrimp and vegetables. You will also have a floating melons dessert to top it off. (2 hours) Friday, August 12 at 6:30 p.m. art classes Manga Drawing Workshop with Misako Rocks! Program code: SAT301 Misako Rocks! Is the author of Biker Girl, Rock and Roll Love and Detective Jermaine. She will take you on a step by step journey of a graphic novel artist and show you her process of developing characters. Join Misako Rocks! and learn how to draw your characters, plot your manga stories and more. All materials will be provided. (1 hour) Thursday, July 21 at 6 or 7:30 p.m. In between sessions, Misako Rocks! will sign books. Books will be available for purchase, $10 each. Fire Island in Watercolor Program code: SAT327 Paint a delightful scene of the Fire Island lighthouse and beach in this watercolor class. Monday, August 1 at 3 p.m.

For Sixth Graders Only Sixth Grade Carnival Program code: SAT139 If you are entering sixth grade this fall, this program is for you. Join us in an assortment of carnival games as we welcome you to Teen Services. Make your own ice cream sundaes and finish off the evening with music and games provided by our DJ for this event. (2 hours) Wednesday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m. Aboriginal Art Program code: SAT325 Create and paint an original piece of art using the techniques which are native to the Australian aboriginals. Monday, July 11 at 3 p.m. Gadget Holders Program code: SAT256 Create your own unique holder to protect your cell phone, ipod or MP3 player. Be sure to bring your mobile device with you to make sure it fits. (1 hour) Wednesday, July 15 at 3 p.m. Celestial Cork Board Program code: SAT312 Paint a celestial scene on a piece of cork board that you can then take home and use to display photos or messages. (1 hour) Friday, July 22 at 4 p.m. Origami Around the World Library Scavenger Hunt Program code: SAT269 Find little known facts and collect miscellaneous items as you travel throughout the Library collecting clues and completing your list. Thursday, July 14 at 3 p.m. Program code: SAT314 Fold origami from Italy, Russia, Hungary, Germany... just to name a few! Discover origami from the land of your heritage or just have fun folding. Movies and Munchies Summer Rental (PG, 86 minutes) A stressed-out air traffic controller's family takes a much needed holiday in Florida and has one misadventure after another. Enjoy the end of the summer with ice cream and a viewing of a classic flashback movie from Friday, August 19 at 6:30 p.m. Anime Movies Calling all anime fanatics! Watch an anime movie and play anime related games! Thursday, June 30 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 9 at 3 p.m. 5
8 Getting Ready to Baby-Sit Program code: SAT143 Are you planning to babysit this summer? Learn basic safety tips, how to get a job and important tips every babysitter should know. This workshop will include hands-on skills. All participants will receive a certificate of completion. (3 hours) You may sign up for one session only. Friday, June 24 at 5:30 p.m. or Saturday, July 9 at 1:30 p.m. World of Harry Potter Trivia Program code: SAT278 Now that the last Harry Potter movie is about to be released, see how well you remember all the details from the books and movies. Think you can recall all the trivia and minutia of the Harry Potter world without a remembral? Join us in our Harry Potter trivia and see where you rate in the wizarding world. Friday, July 8 at 3 p.m. Zumba Program code: SAT310 Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music that creates a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness system. What better way to spend a summer evening! Teens are asked to wear low tread sneakers and bring socks and a water bottle to the class. (1 hour each session) Mondays, July 11, 18 and 25 at 7 p.m. Library Scavenger Hunt (7th and 8th graders only) Program code: SAT270 Find little known facts and collect miscellaneous items as you travel throughout the Library collecting clues and completing your list. Thursday, August 4 at 3 p.m. SUMMER FUN DJ Hero Program code: SAT318 Join us in this interactive electronic program. Mix, match and scratch songs just like a real DJ! We have over 100 songs to choose from. Thursday, August 4 at 5:30 or 7 p.m. Teen Wii Game Night Program code: SAT305 Come play with fellow teens on our multiple Wii systems. Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m. Voices of Sachem Teens (V.O.S.T.) Program code: SAT224 Need community service hours? Be a part of this volunteer group and give back to the community in a variety of ways. Summer Highlights Battle of the Books Do you like to read? Are you entering grades 6-9 in September 2011? Read eight specially selected books, and then compete to be one of the six finalists that will represent Sachem Library in the Suffolk County Battle of the Books. Meetings are scheduled for: Mondays, June 20, 27, July 11, 18, 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, June 22, July 13, 20 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays, July 8, 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sign up for this program begins June 1 in Teen Services. The Mini-Battle, which is our in-house Battle of the Books, will take place on Wednesday, July 27 at 6 p.m. Book Battlers will compete that evening to become one of the all-county team from Sachem. The Suffolk County Battle of the Books and the finals will take place on Saturday, August 13 at Stony Brook University. Wizard Rock Showcase with the Whomping Willows, Lauren Fairweather (of the Moaning Myrtles) and Justin Finch-Fletchley and Armoured Bearcub No registration required. Showcase of the Bands No registration required. Sit under the stars and listen to some of the top local teen bands perform in the Library s garden. Be sure to bring a blanket or chair. Rain or shine (indoors, if it rains). Friday, July 15 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Monster Mini Golf Program code: SAT333 Got the Monday blues? Come join us for a private party that includes 18 holes of ghoulish, indoor, glow-in-the-dark monster themed miniature golf! Refreshments will be served. You must provide your own transportation. Monster Mini Golf is located in the Sunshine Shopping Center at Patchogue- Yaphank Road, Medford. Celebrate the release of the final Harry Potter movie with a Wizard rock band, inspired by the Harry Potter book series. Come in your favorite Harry Potter costume, if you wish. The show will be held outside in the garden if the weather permits (indoors, if it rains).
