2 EAST MEADOW PUBLIC LIBRARY YOUNG ADULT HAPPENINGS ALL PROGRAMS ARE FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12 UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED. SUMMER READING PROGRAM Libraries Rock! Young adults entering grades 6-12 are invited to sign up starting June 11 in the YA Room. Participants will log their reading online and pick up prizes in person when they reach certain milestones. Big readers will be entered into our End-of-Summer Raffle for a chance to win grand prizes. Summer Reading Kick-off Party Thursday, June 28 at 7 p.m. Ice Cream Sundae / Musical Movie Night Summer is here at last! Cool off with an ice cream sundae bar and other snacks and watch a fun movie musical. Sign up starting June 18. EVENING PROGRAMS Registration for July programs begins Monday, June 25 Registration for August programs begins Monday, July 23 Rock Art Tuesday, July 7 p.m. Paint and design rocks that will light up the night. Mystery Scavenger Hunt Thursday, July 7 p.m. Get the clues, find the objects, and solve the mystery. Search the Library in teams during this fun scavenger hunt. T-Shirt Design Workshop Tuesday, July 7 p.m. Turn a plain t-shirt into something unique and fun 2

Harry Potter Shrinky Dinks Thursday, August 7 p.m. Create Harry Potter themed shrinky dink key chains. Dream Catchers Tuesday, July 7 p.m. Make a dream catcher to decorate your room or give as a gift. Drum Cake Thursday, July 7 p.m. Make this drum cake using frosting, pretzel rods and marshmallows! $2 materials fee. The Yummy Art of Henna Tuesday, July 7 p.m. Learn about the history, tradition and preparation of henna, and create your own designs using chocolate on cookies. The Henna design on your hand will last several days! Chopped Thursday, July 7 p.m. Compete in teams to make super creative meals. Rounds consist of an appetizer and a dessert, using mystery ingredients. Prizes will be given out to the chopped champions. Harry Potter Owl Pillow Tuesday, July 7 p.m. Design a pillow to look like your favorite Harry Potter owl. HARRY POTTER S BIRTHDAY! August 1. Come in costume. Share some magic in Hogwarts Classes. More info on pg. 9 BrushBot Battles Tuesday, August 7 p.m. Turn a toothbrush into a robot! Create your BrushBot using simple tools and a tiny motor, and then take part in a Brush- Bot race! Cupcake Wars Thursday, August 7 p.m. Teens will come up with an original theme and decorate cupcakes as a team. Pet Rocks Tuesday, August 7 p.m. Adopt a rock from the Pet Rock Shop, create a home and some clothes, and take home your new pet! Claymojis Thursday, August 7 p.m. Create the emoji of your choice using polymer clay. Charms will be made into a necklace or keychain. We will also have a fun clay contest! Locker Accessories Tuesday, August 7 p.m. Make homemade locker accessories to decorate your school locker. EVENING PROGRAMS Registration for July programs begins Monday, June 25 Registration for August programs begins Monday, July 23 Harry Potter Escape Room Challenge Wednesday, August 7 p.m. Team up with your friends, share clues and use your logic to see if you can ESCAPE! Bring your knowledge of all things Hogwarts. 3

Video Game Afternoons 11 a.m. Drop in and play your favorite games on the Xbox 360 or Wii U. Virtual Reality Experience 11 a.m. Try out our virtual reality glasses and travel into space, visit dinosaurs, or ride a rollercoaster. Drop in Crafts 11 a.m. Drop by the YA Room and make a fun craft. Book Café 11 a.m. Discuss your favorite books and discover some new ones. 4 ALL PROGRAMS ARE FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6-12 UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED. TOURNAMENT FRIDAY, JULY 6 p.m. Are you a HUGE Dragon Ball fan!? Be one of Earth s Mightiest Fighters in a Tournament of Power to become a champion! We will be playing on a PS4 on the big screen. Space will be very limited. Sign ups will be at 6-6:30 p.m. at the tournament. First come, first serve. Light refreshments and music.

Students should bring a flash drive to store their files. The first session will be on Monday, July 9. Sign up Monday, June 25. Search for the Summer Mascots Search the Library for our YA summer mascots, Guitar Gary and Clarinet Clara. College Essay Brainstorming Workshop Monday, August 7 p.m. This workshop for high school students will discuss what colleges are looking for in college application essays. Students will participate in some brainstorming exercises to fine tune their choice of essay topic and review strategies to use when writing their college essays. Sign up Monday, July 23. They will be hidden somewhere different each week.
