7 DIRECTOR S NOTE Ten years ago I sat in the audience at a small theatre on the campus of UCLA. Not sure what to expect, I patiently waited for the show to begin. In the next ninety minutes, the story that unfolded in front of me took me on a journey and introduced me to Once On This Island for the first time. A story of two different worlds, love conquering death, personal sacrifice and inner strength. As you sit in the seats waiting for the show to begin tonight, think back to the stories you have been told, maybe as a child or from a good friend over coffee, or maybe just like tonight on a stage. Storytelling is a tradition that goes back to our deepest roots. Once On This Island plants its roots in this rich tradition. As our story unfolds here tonight, reflect on your story, how you got here and where your journey will take you. As for me, after ten years, I sit in the same audience as you, anticipating the start of this show, a show that I had the privilege to direct alongside my dear friend, a friend who told his story on stage all those years ago in that small theatre on the campus of UCLA. Our stories make us who we are, guide our path and give us the strength to face even the toughest of situations. If we learn anything from the Story of Ti Moune we learn that Our lives become the stories that we weave, and for me that is Why We Tell the Story. -Jessica Brandon Kate, we're so proud of you for all the hard work you've put into this play! Love Mom, Dad, Sam, Kalli, & Pumpkin Kinzie, we are so blessed to have you as our daughter! Break a leg, superstar! Love, Mom & Dad Genevieve, you make a really good Erzulie! Love, Mom, Jeremy, Alyssa and Hayden To my fellow cast members, I've had so much fun being in this play with you. Break a leg! From Kate Sprague We're super proud of you, Claire. Love, Mom, Dad, Stan, Stephen, Drew, and Dorothy. xo Miss Jessica & Miss Jenn, thank you for making this play look and sound great! From Kate
