Park View Student Newspaper March 2017 TNT has Saint Patrick s Day Theme One of the biggest events of the school year at Park View Middle School is the school s annual talent show called TNT. TNT, which stands for top notch talent, is on March 17th, at 6:30 P.M. in the Park View Middle School auditorium. The theme of TNT this year is The Wearing Of The Green. Mr. Bishop, director of TNT, said it takes a lot of time to prepare and the performers rehearse many times to make sure the talent is show ready. Mr. Bishop said they had try-outs right after Christmas vacation. Then they rehearsed on average two times a week. If you like singing acts, then you will enjoy some of the acts from TNT. Mr. Bishop said that most people auditioned to show off their vocal talents. However, there are still many more interesting and unique acts that you can enjoy. In fact, Mr. Bishop said the teacher acts are also very unique and fun to watch. Mr. Bishop said, most of the students are pretty nervous. However, with plenty of practice time, they will be ready in time for the big show. If you are interested in buying tickets, they are $10.00, and are currently on sale. You can get your tickets from the Guidance Office, the PE office, from Mr. Hassan in the band room, and from Mr. Bishop in room 221. TNT will last about 2 hours, and will have about 30 acts in the show. If you did not try out this year or did not become a backstage helper, then there By Sofia D Angelos is always next year! 2 February Vacation is not a forgotten Memory By Rowan Hanley The school year is a very long thing that kids have to go through. The year is exactly one hundred eighty school days with three breaks and a few holidays mixed in. The second break is a week long February vacation. After February vacation, Park View has many interesting things happening. For example, there is the Park View versus Bain basketball game, where students and faculty face off against Bain Middle School. Another event is the three on three tournament which is also after vacation and that always brings excitement. Although February vacation is good because we get away from school, there isn't that much to do during the break. But, because of the unexpected warm weather, it allowed kids to go outside and do activities. It was a welcomed surprise and it was needed because of the cold weather that followed. For most kids, it was an excuse to get out the house and play basketball or do other things. The warm weather and no school reminded most of us of summer vacation and it added anticipation to the break. A lot of people weren't going outside for a while because of school and cold weather, but because of the warm weather, the break offered the perfect opportunity. However, the break also made people forget things they were studying. Although most teachers did not give any tests right after the break, a few teachers gave tests several days after break ended. Most people didn't fail, but some students earned grades lower than they expected. Some school districts are considering shortening or eliminating February vacation altogether. This would only make sense if the entire state decided to stay on the same schedule. Having different vacations than relatives in nearby cities creates problems. All I know is that there are only four more weeks until April vacation. But who s really counting? Valentine s Dance Delayed by Snow still Awesome By Skyla Chhea After weeks of waiting, the dance is finally here! At first there was supposed to be a Winter dance but that got changed into a Valentine s dance. Unfortunately, due to the weather, the dance was pushed back two weeks. Although the wait was very long, the dance itself was worth it. The dance was ultimately held on Friday, March 3. The students, dressed in beautiful dresses and bow ties, slowly poured into the gymnasium and were met by booming music with spectacular decorations. The dark gymnasium was lit up with red and green lights amongst white spotlights. The dance floor was covered with fog to add more of a majestic vibe to the dance. Even though the dance happened well after February 14, it still held a Valentine s theme. The whole room was covered with hearts and there was a special photo booth station where friends posed for pictures. The background of the booth had hearts all around it. This was a fantastic feature to the dance because the students were able to create lasting memories of that night. This dance was also the perfect time for students to hangout with their friends. One student Savana Lavimodiere said, I liked the music and all of the dancing. Two other students, Kelly Chan and Anya Loy agreed, The music was the best part of the dance. The students enjoyed themselves, dancing around with their friends and singing along to popular artists like Kodak Black, A-Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, and 21 Savage. However, as the night ended, instead of going straight back to home, many students went to Garden City. This is where the students decided to unwind and hang out with their friends for a little bit longer. While relaxing, some students went to Newport Creamery to enjoy delicious burgers and ice cold milkshakes. Overall, it was a special night that a lot of students will never forget.

3 Celebrating St. Patrick s Day By Ghassan Jomaa St. Patrick s Day is a holiday that is celebrated by Irish all around the world. However, you don t have to be Irish to celebrate it! St. Patrick's Day is on March 17th and a fun part of this day is for people to wear green, eat corned beef and cabbage. Celebrating this day traditionally centers around a feast celebrating Saint Patrick. He is the patron saint of Ireland. He was a Christian missionary, or a person sent on a religious mission, to promote Christianity. He ultimately converted most of Ireland to Christianity. There are so many legends about his life that finding the truth about him is not easy. Since, finding historical facts are difficult, I talked with some friends that actually celebrate St. Patrick s Day. Connor Chambers and Nick Cobb said that they, Spend time with family. Connor also added, In addition to spending time with family on Saint Patrick s Day I always run a race in Providence, The St. Patrick s Day 5K. Kloey Young, said, I have a feast with my family. We always eat cabbage with our feast. The trio went on to say that they, spend time with family, wear green, and just have fun. Asked to describe Saint Patrick s Day in one word? Nick said, Green. Connor s response was Lucky! Don t forget, Saint Patrick s Day is on March 17th and don t be afraid to show some Saint Patrick s Day spirit; the best part about this day is you don t even have to be Irish to celebrate it. 4 Cheerleaders and Pep Band Add Zest to Park View By Julie St. Nelus We all know that all the students that go to Park View have pride in their school. But the question is how do we show it? One of the ways we show it is through the Park View Cheerleading team. The girls have had one heck of a season. And it's not even over yet. They performed at many basketball games and the holiday assembly. Each performance is always better than the last. The cheerleaders made their way back into the Park View School last year after being away for more than 8 years. Mrs. Zuena, the school social worker, leads the way with her assistant coach Tori Gervas and the help of her two co-captains Katia Reyes of the 8th grade Voyagers and Kalyse Brown of the 8th grade Patriots. These girls are the true definition of school spirit. The cheerleaders season will end with the Bain vs. Park View basketball game. They will be performing at half-time. The girls have been practicing very hard since this will be their most notable performance of the year. So, it is important to make sure that later on this month that you buy your tickets for the game and show some school pride! Another group participating in the resurgence of pride in Park View is the Pep Band. Before this year there was no Pep Band. But this year, a group of students Nate Poshkus, Patrick Maguire, Lily Maguire, Mo Holtzman, Caden Holtzman, David Scarborough, Will Hardy, Jordan Wolf and Nabil Chaudrey decided to work on their own time to create some much needed music for Park View events. The Band adds a lot of flavor to the events that fills the void of silence. Between the pep band and the cheerleaders, there is definitely more excitement at Park View. The Cheerleaders are Butter because they are on a roll!

5 Baseball Tryouts are in full swing By Giovanni Grundy Park View has a variety of sports. In spring you can sign up, and try out for the baseball team. Even if you have never played baseball you can still try out, and who knows maybe you have a special talent you didn't know about. If you are trying out, you have to have your equipment and be ready, because there are plenty of good baseball players at Park View. If you do make the team you will be facing the other middle schools in Rhode Island. In tryouts you have to give it your all because you will be facing the best players in Park View. For example, tons of kids will try out and only nineteen will make the team. You may make the team and not play much due to large roster. The coaches will have to think carefully with all these talented young prospects trying out, and if you don't make it this year you can always give it a try next year. Nathan Lopes is trying out. He plays pitcher, catcher, and short-stop. Also Caleb Maytum will as well. He is a pitcher and has a killer fastball. This year, the coaches will have a very difficult time selecting only 19 players because there is so much talent to choose from. Also if you make the team you will be equipped with an authentic Park View sweater from the team. You will have to face some of the hardest middle schools in the state, and you will be competing to make it to the championship. According to sources, mostly seventh graders are trying out for the team. There are some players from eighth grade that were on the team last year who will be returning. For instance, Matt Winn and AJ Greene will be trying out for the team. In conclusion, this year Park View baseball will be very competitive.

6 Patriots Comeback over Atlanta Greatest of All Time By Jack Neville The Patriots have done it again, winning their 5th Super Bowl. The Patriots made a spectacular comeback in the end of the third quarter of Super Bowl 51. The first quarter was scoreless, which led people to think this game was going to be a close game. Eventually the Atlanta Falcons scored 21 points in the second quarter and left the New England Patriots with only a field goal making the halftime score In the second half all Patriots fans we re hoping we would come back but as soon as the third quarter started the Patriots still couldn't get anything to work, but were able to score 6 points although they missed an extra point. The Falcons quickly scored in the third quarter and most people believed the Falcons were going to win. The Patriots, however, came into the fourth quarter with the intentions of leaving Houston, Texas as winners. The Patriots scored 19 points to tie the game with seconds left on the clock. Super Bowl 51 eventually went into overtime. As if this Super Bowl story can t get any better, this is the first Super Bowl to go into overtime. The Patriots and Falcons fans were anxious now to see who would win the title of World Champions. The Patriots won the coin toss and quickly moved the ball downfield and a pass interference in the end zone put the Patriots on the one yard line. History was made when James White rushed into the end zone for the Patriots 5th Super Bowl title. This comeback was the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. And if anybody were going to do it, it might as well be Tom Brady and his Patriots. On the following Tuesday after the Super Bowl victory, Patriots fans from around New England took the streets of Boston to celebrate with a parade. Patriots fans took on the cold and snowy weather too see their favorite Patriots bring home the precious Lombardi trophy. Even Gronk, who wasn't able to participate in the game due to injuries, was there getting the whole city of Boston pumped up for their champions. Although some of our favorite players might be leaving New England this offseason, we will still be able to remember them as the ones who helped the Patriots win a 5th Super Bowl, one of the greatest victories in football history.
