Towerbank Primary School Newsletter Friday 10th February 2017 P6 at Ardeonaig Since Tuesday P6 have been on camp in the snow. More details when they return. P3 Community Work All the P3 classes have been doing work on their local community. There has been some wonderful work and responses. Rebecca drew a brilliant picture of the Little Green Van. Her mum then sent the artwork to the owners of the van on twitter. They were delighted saying this is by some distance the nicest thing we have seen in a very long time, there is a special hot choc waiting. Rebecca was then given a free rose hot chocolate and there are plans to use her drawing as the basis of a fund raising or charity plan. Oliver build a scale model of Portobello Library with lego after the class visit there. We have been learning about the Portobello community. A community is a place where people live together and share things. We wrote reports all about the Portobello Community. We made posters about the amazing places in Portobello. Ella, Ava and Sam J P3

Volleyball P5 winners Well done to all the 15 P5s who took part in a volleyball tournament at Meadowbank last week. The green team won the overall medal. Many thanks to Mr MacAninch for helping all day. Towerbank Cheerleading, P4-7 On Mondays there is a cheerleading group that practices dances for upcoming shows. Last show we thought it was just a small get together, but it turns out it was a competition. And only 2 or 3 groups would get through. Our dance is to the song, Move by Little Mix. All together there were about 6 shows, and 12 dances in each show. We managed to get through to the finals but there are 4 groups we have to go up against, and if we come 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd we will get a Prize. But even if we don t win then it will still be an achievement as we have never done anything like that before. We are the only group that our cheerleading instructor, Lauren, teaches that got through. In cheerleading we often do warm ups and corner work, working on our kicks, sassy walks and skills. But most importantly we have fun. Sometimes Lauren lets us take warm up. It can sometimes become a little stressful but we always end up laughing and working through it. We would definitely recommend cheerleading. We always have lots of fun. By Katie and Alice P7 Primary 5C goes to Holyroodhouse Palace Gory history, the rest is a mystery! We started our trip off on the X15 bus from Portobello which took us into Edinburgh City centre, where we walked down a path to the gates of Holyrood House Palace where we met our tour guide, Adam. Adam showed us different artefacts from the Tudor period where we learned about the history of them, such as a chamber pot and a purse with coins in them. When we went into the Palace we learnt lots of things that we didn t know. Such as King Charles II would cut people s noses if they were disrespectful and that Queen Mary s bed was destroyed by the English Army. We also learnt that King Henry VIII was 56 inches wide and that Queen Mary was wearing a wig when she died. We really enjoyed going up the secret passageway that led to Mary s room, and we enjoyed looking at the portraits in the Royal Art Gallery of the Royal Family. One thing we wish they had was an activities room so there were more fun things for children to do. We also wish you were able to take photos. If you love history - British history, Scottish history or Royal history, if you are a tourist, young, old, or middle aged, then this is the place for you watch out for Gardyloo!

P2/1 local walk On Wednesday 8 th February P2/1 enjoyed a lovely walk around our local area. We learnt all about the Bottle Neck Pottery Kilns. When we got back to class we wrote about what we had learnt and made pinch pots from clay. A big thanks to all the adult helpers! Quiz team win Really well done to all the teams who took part in the Rotary quiz. The team with Joe, Callie and Lizzie won. They go forward to the next round.

This week P2C and P2A went on a trip to Greyfriars Church. We went on the bus through the town and we saw Edinburgh Castle, Arthurs Seat and the Scott Monument from the bus window. It was really exciting to see where Bobby lived for 14 years. Well done to everyone competing at the High School on Friday. The results keep us on top and still on course to reclaim the league trophy this year! Mr McConnachie & Miss Hewat

New Year for the Nursery The nursery children have been learning about the Chinese New Year. They have tasted Chinese noodles and crackers, listened to Chinese music, created blossom pictures, copied Chinese writing, designed their own dragons and dressed up in traditional clothes. We invited Taylor s mum to share photographs of a recent visit to China. Lucas dad shared Chinese clothes he brought back from a recent visit. Many of our children are planning a visit to China! RNIB athletics by Leo P7 On Friday the 27 of January, I will leave school at 1130 and I will go home and get changed for athletics. A taxi will pick me up at 1200 to go to the RNIB. When I get there I will meet my friend Darrel and Jane, who works there, and we will go in her car with her daughter Anna. On the way there we will go to McDonald s and get some food. We will eat inside then it will be a long drive - about 1 hour to an hour and a half - depending on the traffic. When we get there we will go and get signed in at the front entrance. We will get a sticker with our name on it which we will put on our jumpers. We will meet the other groups. There will be about 30 different groups all together. There will be like 20 hundred of us. We will split up into all different teams. They will be in age categories such as 10 to 14 and 15 to 20. I will name all of the different things I will do. 1. Long jump - where you have to take a big run and then jump as far as you can. 2. Sprinting - you go on a track and run as fast as you can I will do 60-metre sprint. 3 Javelin - you get a big heavy javelin 4.Shot putt Reminder that next week is a holiday. School starts again on Monday 20 th February for everyone. Have a lovely holiday.
