Booker, Brownrigg, Weiss, Nippes, Lyndon & Linda Ellis, Pasquarelli, Lane SAND LAKE KIWANIS VALLEY CATS BASEBALL OUTING Mon Aug 10 th. Contact Eve Ward for tickets. PROGRAM John Brownrigg and Lyndon Ellis led the recap of Summerfest John felt it was successful despite the low attendance. We had 6 to 8 thousand people Saturday night as compared to the usual 10 to 12 thousand we ve had previously. Fireworks were planned for 10 PM, but were started at 9:45 to beat the forecasted downpour (which came about 10:20!) The money has not had a final count, more to come in, but appears to be more than last year (when we lost 2 days of the weekend to rain). Sue did a great job selling all the 50/50 raffle tickets collecting about $800. The winner was one of our own, our newest member Frank Lewandusky who took home $400! Way to go, Frank! First time an SLK was the winner! Bob Pasquarelli thanked Lyndon and Linda for their gigantic effort in the Food Trailer. They never left it! Leftover rolls were donated to Doors of Hope. Took in an estimated $11,000. Joe Behson reported that the Tennis Tournament made about $600. Our share of the carnival ride tickets is about $6,000. Even before all the details are added, it appears we made more than last year. It s a lot of work, but it is our major fund raising event for next year. Stu Nippes felt SF 2015 was successful, despite some snags. The APHS Girls Softball Champions were not permitted to appear because next week is exam week and they need to study. There was no parade because the local fire companies were attending a convention, and therefore did not bring in people for the Opening Ceremonies. Only a few Kiwanians were there! There will undoubtedly be some changes next year, including the date. Big carnival rides are necessary to bring in teens, who have the money! But we also need kiddie rides for families. A date later, perhaps early in July right after the 4 th, would allow the day campers to spend a week day. Janet Malecki said there was confusion over the schedule, which was different depending upon which publication was consulted. Start times for rides were changed at will (by the carnival) and this upset families with children who had to wait. There were also problems with vendors and their placements. However the beer garden seemed successful, as was the special sandwich booth; they sold out by Saturday night, and are looking forward to next year. The lemonade booth appeared to be very busy Saturday, too, but since Sunday s attendance was so sparse, they left early. Stewart s Ice Cream was very popular, but closed on Sunday.
3 John concluded that much needs to be mulled over, not the least of which are some ideas of other fund raising events we can do. He thanked everyone who helped asked for an applause selfie from all! Once again, our attendance was low, and 6 extra meals were sold for $10 each to spare the Adm Fund any more expense. HAPPY DOLLARS $ Pat Lane: Once a teacher, always a teacher! My thanks to Kevin Sarsfield for his very helpful measured pieces of duct tape in the ticket booth to quickly count out 10 or 15 tickets! Thanks to everyone for working to make it a great weekend! $ Pete Stevens: My daughter is in the process of applying to medical schools, and was startled to learn that even the application costs $3000! $ Joe Trupia: I missed the Saturday of Summerfest because I was hosting about 50 friends and family, many from out of state, at an 80 th birthday celebration for my wife Audrey! But I did work Sunday on the Triathlon! $ Joe Behson: I want to thank my hard working helpers at the tennis tournaments, Frank Breselor, Bruce Perry, and of course, Margaret! They were there every day early in the morning till all was done. My son Scott s book was scheduled for a slot on MSNBC, but was bumped due to the tragedy in South Carolina. $ Bob Pasquarelli: IT S OVER! On a different note, I just want to comment on the reaction of the people in Charleston, SC as compared to the other cities who suffered tragedies. Maybe there s hope for us yet. Their unity and spirit of forgiveness sets a good example. $ Dave Booker: My first experience working in the ticket booth was enlightening. Some very young ladies tried to scam us by claiming someone tore up their tickets, and would we please give them whole ones! (It didn t work!) DOOR PRIZE, provided by John Brownrigg, was won by Ron Wagner! 50/50 for $19 was won by Bill Whipple! PROGRESSIVE 50/50, worth $ this week, continued to hide that King of Clubs. Peg Weiss ticket was pulled, but no amount of coaching worked. She picked the 10 of Hearts from the remaining 22 cards on the table. Something s going to happen pretty soon! COMING WEEKS NEXT MONDAY JUNE 29 *** R&R FROM SUMMERFEST FATIGUE PICNIC 6 PM AT BUTLER PARK Bring a guest, chair, and a dish to share! 4 JULY 20 PROGRAM CHAIR: Joe Trupia GREETER/INVOCATOR/CERTIFICATE: Peg Weiss SPIRITUAL THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: When you have a dream, you ve got to grab it and never let go. Carol Burnett Which way to Summerfest? Joe watches Pete count the money - and prays it balances
