1 Stone Bank School REACHING OUT September 12, 2014 Issue #1 Welcome Back to e New School Year! New faces roughout e building: Nicole Roets is e 4K pm teacher. Grace Garoutte and Carrie Nettesheim are part-time Special Ed teaching assistants and Debbie Kraft is one of our part-time Title I Cooinators. Attendance and Visitors The start time for students at Stone Bank School is 7:35am. This is five minutes earlier an last year. Students will be considered tay anytime after at. All students arriving late or leaving early must report to e school office for a pass back to class. We encourage regular attendance. Now at our security system has been in place for over a year (wi minimal problems), parents and visitors are required to come to e office to sign in and wear a guest badge at all times while visiting e school. Students who are ill and have been out of school for more an ree days need to submit a doctor s excuse. In accoance wi Wisconsin State Law, Section , all students are required to attend school regularly on a consistent and timely basis. If a student is absent from school wiout an acceptable excuse for part or all of five or more days per semester, a petition may en be filed wi e juvenile system. Sports Night Thursday, September 18 from 6pm- 7:30pm. All parents who have children who plan on playing girls or boys basketball, being a cheerleader, or playing boys or girls volleyball are highly encouraged to come to e presentation. Girls who are planning on playing basketball should be ere to register, pay e $50.00 aletic fee, and receive eir uniforms. Oer sports will be available to register as well. We will be presenting a powerpoint presentation at will cover all aspects of Stone Bank Aletics. Please mark your calendars. If you have any questions feel free to contact Dan Green or d.green@stonebank.k12.wi.us Counselor s Corner Now at school has started we have to get into school swing. Here are some helpful hints to get ings started in e right direction. Homework Hints ~ 1. Agree on a Homework Time 2. Set up a study area away from e T.V. at a table or a desk. 3. Do e most difficult subjects first. 4. Give yourself plenty of time. 5. Get plenty of rest! 6. Set up an incentive wi your child for filling in eir assignment notebook, is is a habit at we want em to get into. Also, here is a helpful link for more homework tips for parents: homework.html You can provide many opportunities for success every day. Once a student is successful in one activity, one subject, it can carry over to e rest of his/her life. Please see e attached flier in regas to our nd Unity Day Celebration on October 22! Bus Notes District students wishing to ride e bus to a different stop on a particular day, must present a parent note to e office for confirmation and signature. Students will not be allowed onto e bus unless a note is presented to e bus driver. Bus routes will be closely monitored for overage, based also on attendance for at day. Notes will be honored on a first come, first serve basis. Last minute notes or phone calls will not be honored, except in an emergency. Page 1
2 Picture Retake Day Empire Photography wi be here on Thursday, September 25 to take pictures of any students at were not here for open house in August. Also any student who was not pleased wi eir picture package and want to have eir picture retaken, should bring e entire packet back to school on e 25. Heal Room Request If your child has a heal issue and needs medication(s) kept at school, please have e necessary forms completed and sent to e heal room. All medical forms can be found on e Stone Bank website or wi e school nurse, Mrs. Korom. Auor Michael Perry to Speak at Stone Bank In cooination wi Books & Company, Mr. Zastrow has arranged to have auor Michael Perry speak at Stone Bank School on Thursday, September 18 for e 5, 6, and 7 grade students. The event will be held from 1:30pm - 2:25pm. Any students at want to purchase a copy of Michael s new book, Scavengers, can see e attached informational flyer. Students at decide to participate will have e opportunity to have Michael sign his/her book on e day of e presentation from 12:45pm - 1:15pm. Advanced oers need to be completed by Monday, September 15. For more information on Michael Perry and his new book, please see his website: Attention Middle School Students Do you love to write? Consider joining Stone Bank s Literary Magazine The Scribbler! We work on creative writing, poetry, and visual arts! Any creative minds are welcome to join me for an informational meeting on Monday, September 15 from 2:30pm - 3:00pm. We hope to see you ere!!! Attention 8 Grade Parents I m looking for several chaperones to join e 8 grade class on Tuesday, October 7. We are taking a field trip to e WCTC sponsored Career Expo at Waukesha Expo Grounds. We will leave school at 10:00am, stop for an early lunch and en head on to e career EXPO. Tuesday, September 30 2:30pm - 6:30pm. Sign up sheet in e school office. Bagels wi buds : A fundraiser for student council outreach projects. Our monly Bagels wi Buds starts at 7:00am before school starts. $ warm bagels wi toppings $.50 - hot chocolate wi whipped cream or juice box Mark your calendar for future dates: September 18, 2014 October 16, 2014 November 20, 2014 December 18, 2014 January 15, 2015 February 19, 2015 March 19, 2015 April 16, 2015 May 21, 2015 Spaghetti Dinner: The spaghetti dinner is a fundraiser for e 7 grade Outdoor Education Experience at Camp Whitcomb which takes place in April/May The Spaghetti dinner is being held on Wednesday, September 24 right after e annual Fit n Fun Run. All students and community members are invited to participate. The dinner menu will include spaghetti wi sauce (meatless or wi meatballs), salad, bread and beverage. We will be looking for students to help wait staff e dinner participants. Watch for furer information regaing prices and join us for an evening of fun and camaraderie. Leadership Camp: The Arrowhead Area Schools Leadership Camp will take place at Indian Mound Boy Scout Camp in Oconomowoc on Thursday, October 9 and Friday, October 10. Students wishing to participate in is leadership opportunity should contact Mrs. Wilson for e paperwork. It is open to students in 6-8 grade. Up to 15 students are invited to attend. Annual Peanut Butter & Jelly Challenge: st Beginning October 1 e PB&J challenge will begin and given to Second Harvest to help feed e hungry. Help reach oers by donating peanut butter and jelly in plastic containers. Winter Coats: As you are cleaning out closets and getting ready for winter, your gently used coats at have been outgrown will be a nice gift to someone in need. We are once again going to be sponsoring our One Warm Coat Drive. Collection date to be posted in e next issue of Reaching Out. Page 2
3 Fall Leadership Institute: Newly elected officers for Student Council will attend e 2014 Fall Leadership Institute on Sunday, October 26 - Monday, October 27 at e Kalahari Resort, Wisconsin Dells. The Leadership Institute provides an opportunity for student leaders to network wi oer student leaders across Wisconsin. 4 grade Elementary Student Council members will have e opportunity to attend e Elementary Leadership Institute on October 15 in Madison. Watch for furer details. Room Parent Sign Up Welcome back!! If you missed e room parent sign up sheet at Open House now is e time to sign up. Our Classroom teachers need help organizing classroom parties roughout e year. If you have any questions or are interested in being a room parent, please contact Jennifer Gilroy at jengilroy5@gmail.com Oktoberfest in e Park Run up to 5K in Pretzel loops rough e park and Stone Bank School grounds, is is an off road, mostly grass course fun run for all ages. All runners receive a Pretzel Run T-shirt and a pretzel treat at e end! Registration table opens at 8:30am Approximate schedule: Adults wiout young children ~ 9:30, reg. fee is $15 High School ages ~ 9:45, reg. fee is $13 Middle School 6-8 ages ~ 10:00, reg. fee is $10 Kindergarten to 5 grade ages ~ 10:30,reg fee is $10 Walkers of all ages ~ 10:45, reg fee is free or $10/person wi Pretzel Run t-shirt Families go out wi age of youngest in group Part of all run registrations goes back to school for aletic dept. use Registration forms can be picked up at school starting Sept 12. Lots more games activities for e family to enjoy. See attached see for furer details. Dress Code Dress and appearance are matters of individual taste and responsibility. Students should dress appropriately for school. We are aware of e importance fashion and peer approval have on what students choose to wear. Sometimes ese conflict wi heal and wellbeing. We encourage parents to assist eir children in making smart choices for eir comfort and heal. Middle School: Administration reserves e right to decide what is or is not appropriate. Modesty in dress is also required. Therefore, any cloing which would become a distraction to e educational atmosphere is prohibited. To reduce e number of judgement calls, we are defining appropriate attire to include e following: no sleeveless (tank tops/spaghetti straps), low-cut shirts, or midriff tops e leng of shorts/skirts must extend beyond fingertips when hands are held at e sides low-rise jeans may only be worn wi tops at completely cover e midriff no pants at drag on e ground or hang below e waist shirts wi suggestive logos are prohibited no lounge wear (pajama type) bottoms except Stone Bank Spirit Wear no wearing of hats or bandanas in e school building tights/leggings may be worn only wi tunic leng tops or wi approved shorts or skirts worn over em Parents may be called at home or at work to bring in alternate cloing for students who are dressed inappropriately. Some of our officers will be going to Stone Bank on Monday, September, 15 to sell our Hawkfest t-shirts. The t-shirts are $15.00 size small ru XXXL.
