2 Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter They say, If you can t beat em, join em! Superbowl Sunday vs. ballroom dancing how do you compete? This year, we had both, or should I say all three dancing, the game, and the half-time show plus commercials. Many thanks are due to Roger Greenawalt for bringing his flat screen TV and setting it up in the small ballroom, then serving as our D.J. for the evening in the large ballroom. Roger, if you haven t already realized, has a great selection of music; if you don t hear your favorite song, all you have to do is ask. Sunday, February 11th was our Mardi Gras dance and a great night for our monthly pitch-in. With four tables of food and desserts, I must say we have some pretty darn good cooks here. Many thanks to those who helped Tanya with both setting out the food and with the wonderful decorations. We enjoyed seeing the getups of those members who got into the festive mood by dressing for the occasion. Our band that night was Dave Lowe, who is always happy to take requests. Fortunately, the ice that had hit some parts of town early Sunday morning did not show its ugly face on our parking lot. On page five of this newsletter you ll see instructions for finding out if the dance has been cancelled. It is also said that people who don t like cold weather either stay home or go south for the winter. Once warm weather sets in again, we expect to be filling up the dance floor with returning snowbirds and new dancers alike. I am not a meteorologist, but in my crystal ball I see at least one beautiful day ahead on Sunday March 18th. Mark your calendar, put on some green, and bring your favorite snack to share, as we celebrate St. Patrick s Day at the best place in Indianapolis to social ballroom dance. We have beginners, professionals, and a whole lot in-between; all of us just doing what we love to do every Sunday night DANCE!! 4 Dance Instruction March From our Dance Instructor Chairman Ben Davis Our professional instructors for March are Ed Godby-Scwab and Diana Miller. We welcome them back to teach the Tango. Together, as independent instructors, Ed and Diana have been providing dance instruction to the Indianapolis and surrounding areas for the past 9 years. They are available together, or individually, for both group and private lessons in American Smooth and Rhythm dances. The beginner lesson will also cover Tango, and will take place in the small ballroom. We thank our last month s professional instructors Scott and Yulia Shook who taught advanced dancers the Rumba. And we thank our member volunteers, who also taught Rumba to our beginner dancers Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning some new dance steps. Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. Please, no video recording of the lesson without permission of the instructor. Do you own a business? Consider running an ad in our newsletter or talk to a friend who might be interested in running an ad. Our newsletter reaches more than 300 people and the rates are quite reasonable. Substantial savings in monthly rates can be realized by running an ad for six months or a year. 6 MY CDC Lana and Joe Heinsman It s been good to see CDC members Lana and Joe Heinsman joining us again on Sunday nights. Following a severe injury to her foot three years ago, Lana found she could not keep up with the vigorous schedule of dancing she and Joe had enjoyed since becoming empty nesters. With her foot now on the mend, Lana s hoping they can become CDC regulars once more. The son of missionary parents, Joe spent his childhood in faraway Taiwan, returning to the States in time to begin attending college. It was in Ft. Wayne, 35 years ago, that Joe met and married Lana, who had been raised on an Ohio farm on the Indiana-Ohio border. The couple married, living first in Ft. Wayne, then Chicago, finally settling in their present home in Mooresville. Lana has served as administrative assistant at Grace Church in Mooresville for the past twenty years. Joe works as a structural engineer; as a wood specialist, he is involved in structural design work for apartment, condominium, and student housing projects. The Heinsmans have two children. The older daughter resides with her husband in Champagne-Urbana, Illinois. Amanda teaches high school and her husband is working on his doctorate in Russian History. Daughter #2 is single, working as a rehabilitation technologist in Greenwood, Indiana. In fact, it was when that second daughter was a senior in high school that Joe and Lana faced the realization - they were about to become empty nesters. They needed a hobby, and, after much discussion and exploration, decided ballroom dancing was going to be just the thing. They began by enrolling for lessons in the Arthur Murray studio (now 5 Star). When the economy tanked in 2008, the Heinsmans dancing adventure was rudely interrupted - Joe s job was eliminated in a downsizing. After that dark period in his career, Joe was able to find professional employment, adapting his skills and experience in a different facet of the construction industry. Back at the Starlite under the instruction of Scott and Yulia Shook, Joe and Lana once again had the freedom to enjoy their two hobbies dancing and travel. The Heinsmans appreciate Continental Club s affordable pricing, great dance floor, and casual atmosphere. Meanwhile, travel continues to rate high on the couple s to-do list. Their adventures have taken them to Mexico, Jamaica, Russia, Taiwan and Kenya, with more trips in the planning. But wherever they find themselves, they dance. We love dancing, Lana gushes.
