2 June, 2018 Volume 58, Number 6 Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter Hello, Continental members! When you think of the month of May, what do you think of? Mother s Day? Memorial Day? The Indianapolis 500? Well let me tell you, that is exactly where our minds are here at the CDC. On Mother s Day we had Apple Pie Day to symbolize motherhood. Marilyn and Sonny brought the pies, I brought the ice cream, and might I say, we all had our sweet tooth fix that night! The next time you see Marilyn and Sonny give them a High Five for sharing and caring. (I can only hope Father s Day is National Corn on the Cobb Day!) The following Sunday was our Black and White Dance, and it is a well-known fact that we love to dress up. It was fabulous to see the beautiful ladies dressed for the occasion (OK, the men, too). The pitch-in included a great assortment of foods and desserts. We do have some darn good cooks in this club (every one of you are greatly appreciated). I would like to thank Tanya and all of her helpers for making the night feel and look so tasty and festive. And thanks also to Monica Lung and Rick McClurg for their wonderful exhibition. We weren t done yet. The following Sunday we welcomed the Continettes with another of their fabulous routines. These ladies do a great job entertaining us and representing us in the community. Last month Rhoda asked us three questions. The answers were: a) the club was founded in 1955 b) board members with three or more vowels in their last names are Dave Hinderliter, Ruthann Osenbaugh and Rhoda Israelov. c) The couple where he was an electrical technician, and she a fiduciary - Carl and Myrna Ortiz. Diane Rice was the winner. (I do know Diane did not win the new car, so keep reading and studying the newsletter, because the next winner could be you. Thanks for spending some time with me. She became a co-founder of Dance Factor Club in 2011. She teaches group and private ballroom dance lessons for beginning and intermediate levels, for both children and adults.

We thank last month s professional instructor Sean Gelhausen who taught advanced dancers the American Rumba. And we thank our member volunteers, who also taught American Rumba to our beginner dancers.

Olga began studying ballroom dancing at the age of 17 at the prestigious Moscow State University in Russia. And she began teaching dance lessons at the age of 20. She became a co-founder of Dance Factor Club in She teaches group and private ballroom dance lessons for beginning and intermediate levels, for both children and adults. Olga specializes in both American and International style social dancing and in Formation dancing. The beginner lesson will also cover American Tango, and will take place in the small ballroom. We thank last month s professional instructor Sean Gelhausen who taught advanced dancers the American Rumba. And we thank our member volunteers, who also taught American Rumba to our beginner dancers. Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning some new dance steps. June, 2018 Volume 58, Number 6 MY CDC Bob Arbuckle My Adventure with Bob Arbuckle by Visiting Reporter Susie Stewart After Dave Hinderliter had visited Bob Arbuckle, I decided to go visit Bob as well.

During the course of that meeting, Bob and I had a short discussion, speculating on what Dave does. Bob was a little baffled, but we decided that Dave must be a man of leisure.

This meant moving it downstairs from an upstairs bedroom. (Note to self do not move a treadle sewing machine down the stairs by yourself again!) What could go wrong, I thought. It was very simple.

Too late now,because there was not enough room to tip it or I d fallllllllll. All was going well coming down the stairs until I got to the last three steps.

6 June, 2018 Volume 58, Number 6 MY CDC Bob Arbuckle My Adventure with Bob Arbuckle by Visiting Reporter Susie Stewart After Dave Hinderliter had visited Bob Arbuckle, I decided to go visit Bob as well. I planned to offer him my grandmother s treadle sewing machine. Lucky for me, Bob was interested. We agreed I would come up the following week and we d go to lunch. During the course of that meeting, Bob and I had a short discussion, speculating on what Dave does. Bob was a little baffled, but we decided that Dave must be a man of leisure. What does Dave Hinderliter do all day? Does anybody really know? In preparation for my lunch date, I had to first load the sewing machine in my car. This meant moving it downstairs from an upstairs bedroom. (Note to self do not move a treadle sewing machine down the stairs by yourself again!) What could go wrong, I thought. It was very simple. I d just walk the machine down the stairs. On the first landing, I realized I should have tipped it on its top and slid it down. Too late now,because there was not enough room to tip it or I d fallllllllll. All was going well coming down the stairs until I got to the last three steps. I don t know what happened, other than I saw a treadle sewing machine flying over my head, pulling me with it. Ouch! Should have called Dave, the man of leisure, to help me. When I got to Bob s shop, he was working away on a sewing machine. Six days a week, from 9 to 5, Bob dons a suit and tie and goes to work in a store that is an early version of JoAnn Fabrics. It is huge. As you enter, sewing machines are neatly placed on each side of the aisle and vacuum cleaners line the walls. There are bolts of fabric, trays of different colored threads and scads of sewing patterns. Bob can meet all your sewing needs! Oh, did I mention in the parking lot there is a large railroad car? We were supposed to go out to eat, but ended up eating lunch at the shop. Music was playing as we ate and Bob asked if I sang. He had changed the words of a Kenny Rogers song called Someone Must Feel like a Fool Tonight. The words had to do with Grandma s sewing machine and how Bob and his daughter could help you with your sewing needs. It was very cute. So we both sang the words, and when it came to a section that is strictly music, Bob held out his hand and we waltzed down the aisle in his store. What a treat! Bob will be 96 soon and feels he has probably 4 or 5 years left. He grew up in Fairmont, Indiana, the home of James Dean, and moved to Noblesville after he came home from the war. He has two daughters, Sara, who is his partner at the shop, and Linda, who lives in California. There is at least one grand-daughter and one or two great-grandchildren. I don t know how Bob s marital status ended, but he told me, You know, I ve had several girlfriends. (Does that surprise anyone?) He loves to wear hats, rarely eats lunch and has no TV. Dancing came late to Bob s life. During the 1960 s while on a trip to Austria, he was watching the famous Lipizzaner Stallions perform when he heard what he describes as the most beautiful music that he had ever heard. It came from a building very close by where a dance was being held. The men were in tailcoats and the women in their finest ball gowns. Bob returned home and began taking lessons from every dance instructor in town. In 1970, Bob joined the and was chosen to be its King on three separate occasions. He continued to dance with us on Sundays until his health forced him to slow down. However, every Wednesday a group of friends come to his shop for line dancing and on Monday s he goes to a community center where Diana Miller teaches lessons. It is Bob s hope to be back at CDC in about a month. He is such a sweet man. I was glad to spend the day with him and learn about his life. My grandmother s treadle sewing machine is in a very happy place and, for a day, so was I. Reporter Rhoda will be back next month. Right now she is roving the countryside looking for her next My CDC subject. page 6
