15 15 Contact: Michelle England, Honors English Teacher ext. 368 Some people love to write, while others hate to write. Some people seek opportunities to write, while others avoid writing at all costs. When students reach high school, however, they need to write. In order to gain confidence in their writing skills, students need to practice writing, they need to write for a specific audience, and they need to share their writing. This summer, students enrolled in the Brother Rice Writing Camp will practice academic writing skills. Over the course of four days young writers will practice grammar and free writing and focus on creating strong thesis statements. Writers will also share the results of their various writing exercises with their fellow participants. During the camp, students will replace dead verbs with lively, interesting action verbs; explore their imaginations with creative writing prompts; and cultivate their abilities by creating potential thesis statements on topics of their choosing. Examining their own writing samples, students will eliminate to be verbs, eradicate run-ons and fragments as needed, and craft stronger, superior sentences.
