THE CRUSADER Times An electronic newsletter published as needed for our parents and academy community T H E A T O N E M E N T A C A D E M Y Red Robin Road, San Antonio TX Phone: o Fax: info@atonementonline.com October 21, 2010 Fides et Ratio A National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence One of America s Top 50 Catholic High Schools OUR MISSION At The Atonement Academy we strive for excellence in the physical, the intellectual, and the spiritual virtues through a challenging course of classical and Catholic education. A Straight Arrow: Mary Campbell Not very often are students awarded a Straight Arrow award. In fact, the last time anyone won this award was six years ago. Wednesday morning, things changed when the Atonement Academy community recognized Mary Bethany Campbell ( 13) with the Straight Arrow award. Straight Arrow awards can be presented at the discretion of the administration for progress that may not have resulted in an honor roll grade but which warrants recognition by the school community. The progress can be academic in nature, or it can be in the realm of initiative and leadership. In Miss Campbell s case, she saw a need to develop school spirit. She carefully devised a plan, visited with several administrators, and used her own funds to create a costume for what would become her alter ego: The Crusader, a school mascot. Nota Bene ( Note Well) Sophomore Mary Campbell visited with Headmaster Ralph Johnston after the awards ceremony. For Miss Campbell in her mascot attire, please see p. 3 Our headmaster, Mr. Ralph Johnston surprised Miss Campbell with the award at the end of the quarterly academic awards ceremony. Her award reads: Mary B. Campbell is commended for her initiative, leadership and citizenship in creating the Crusader mascot and promoting school spirit at athletic contests, establishing a significant and durable tradition for the Academy. from the PTC Tomorrow, October 22 is a holiday for students, as our teachers will be at a conference required by the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools Office. See Box Tops information on last several pages and join in the drawing on October 29! School Spirit Night at Taco Cabana last week was a great success. Atonement families packed the restaurant all evening and enjoyed great fellowship while raising money for our school (we received 20% of all sales during that evening). IMPORTANT DATES October 22: No classes; Archdiocesan Teacher Conference. October 27: 8th Grade Scholarship Awards (after the 9:15 Mass) October 28: College Fair at St. Mary s Univ. October 29: Upper School Night details to follow. November 2: Requiem, 7 pm. Upper School Honors Choir required to sing Nov. 3 & 4: School Portraits, before Mass. November 6-November 14: Fall Break CHECK THE WEBSITE FOR COMPLETE CALENDAR DETAILS QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS? Use our general info@ atonementonline.com

ATHLETICS NEWS Six-Man Football Only two more football games remain: the next one is Friday, October 29th at Castle Hills Baptist Academy, 5810 Blanco Rd. (Pictured above, L-R: John Paul Schumacher and Patrick Cruser.) MS basketball boys and girls tryouts: November 15 th 4:15-5:45 girl s session; 5:50-7:50 boy s session Download flag football and CYO volleyball schedules on ALL-REGION MIDDLE SCHOOL CHOIR Freshman Josemaría Garza accepts his card and treats from the students he monitors in Mrs. Bauer s class. A Freshman Tradition Recognized We have a tradition at our daily Mass: Our freshmen provide service to youngsters in grades PreK through 2, sitting with the little children, modeling good behavior and proper responses during Mass. Last week, our second graders gave the freshmen something in return: they made cards pledging to pray for them as they took their PSAT exams last Wednesday, and the children included a bag of sweets to enjoy during lunch after the exam. One of the teachers, Mrs. Jean Bauer, elaborated on the effort: The help of the freshmen has been invaluable they are a tremendous help to me and the students and we wanted to let them know we would do something special for them as they took their important exam. This is just an example of the unique learning environment in which your children develop and grow at The Atonement Academy! Potential St. Vincent de Paul Society for the High School Please join us in congratulating several 8th grade girls who earned spots in the All- Region Middle School Choir. They are pictured above, L-R: Skylar Black, Veronika Prochko, and Shannon Murray. Are you a high school student interested in starting an outreach for the needy? Students will gather on October 27th at 6pm until about 6:45pm to explore possibilities. Mrs. Trevino is willing to be the faculty sponsor. This will be a good opportunity for people in the high school to get some community service and help out the needy.

Scene on Campus... GRANDPARENT S DAY & OPEN HOUSE Last Sunday, October 17, was our first Grandparent s Day and Open House. Many lower school classes worked hard with their teachers to display their best work. This 2nd grader wrote a poem about his grandpa and illustrated it, too. Upper scholars on the cross country track team, Elizabeth Surovic ( 13) and Anne Kennedy ( 13) receive flowers acknowledging their dedication from our Crusader mascot, Mary Campbell ( 13). We thank the parents and families who visited our school last Sunday, and we extend special appreciation to the teachers who took time out of their weekends to be on hand that morning. Third graders receiving Gold Arrow Awards: Maria Garza, Michael Diaz, and Benjamin Joseph. Congratulations! Mascot Mary Campbell ( 13) welcomes future Crusader (and mini mascot) Greg Doman. Future Crusader John Paul Pecha came out to support his brother at a recent game. Seniors receiving Gold Arrows at the awards ceremony: Annamarie Schumacher and Patrick Cruser. Well done! In a future issue of the Crusader Times, we will highlight a number of students who are busy around the city and state in outside achievements. So far, we have photos of accomplished dancers, runners and musicians. If you have photos or stories to submit, send them to info@atonementonline.com We are always looking for good photos of our on-campus activities, so please don t forget to send those along, too.

Annual College Fair Thursday evening, October 28 St. Mary s University s Greehey Conference Center The Private Schools of San Antonio College Fair is produced annually by a cooperative group of 14 area schools, including ours. This year, as in the past, the fair will be hosted by Saint Mary s University and will be held in the Greehey Convocation Center (the big basketball gym on the south side of campus). More than 150 colleges have confirmed. Upper students and their parents are welcome. If you have not attended this college fair in past years, ask someone who has. Thursday, October 28, 6:30-8:30 pm. Advance arrangements are required; contact the school s representatives at The statue of Sul Ross or "Sully" as he is affectionately called, is one of the most revered works on the A&M campus. 6 Dear Parents, This year The Atonement Academy will be collecting Box Top coupons to raise money for our school. Did you know that some local schools raise thousands of dollars for their schools each year, just from clipping and submitting Box Tops? Many of the items we buy or use every day, have Box Top coupons on them. Box Top coupons are on the packaging of hundreds of participating products that you probably use every day. You can find a list of participating items on the next page of this month s Crusader Times. All you need to do is cut them off of the box or package they are on, attach your Box Tops to the themed monthly collection sheets the PTC will be including in the Crusader Times with glue or double stick tape, and send it to school with your child. If you only have a few box tops each month, you can also put them loose in a baggie or envelope and send them in with your child. We will be collecting Box Tops all year long, but our first submission deadline is October 29, 2010 so start saving and sending in your Box Tops today! Be sure to track our progress at Thanks for choosing to support our school by collecting Box Tops! Sincerely, Ericka Vander Sys President, PTC The Atonement Academy

The Atonement Academy - October Box Tops Collection Sheet Cover the pumpkin in labels. Completed forms will get your name entered in a drawing for a prize. Turn in your pumpkin by Friday, October 29th. Student Name: Teacher & Grade:
