1 CARVING TALK Suzanne Millay Presidents Note: We are in the 3 rd quarter of the year and we still have so many things on the docket. Next up is our annual picnic at the Chadwick s property. Candy has taken over the responsibility this year as Sandee has had other things to take care. I can t think of a better person to hand the reigns to. The Boone county fair has come and gone with winners abound. You can catch the details on page 3. We also sat at the fair Friday and Saturday to demonstrate wood carving skills to the public and even had a few people interested in coming to a meeting. Thank you all for showing your fine works of art at the fair and the demos. Saturday, October 3rd we will be having our annual wood carving show at the Scheben Library. Please mark your calendars and contact Mike Shelton to reserve your table asap. The week after, we will be attending the CCG show both as a club and as individuals with their own table. We have other shows as well, so please watch the calendar on the website or the newsletter for upcoming events. I hate to keep talking about this, but some positions will be opening on the board. If you have any interest in becoming part of the club board, please let anyone that is currently on the board know your intentions. We will log the information and pass it on to the elections committee when we form it in a month or two. Please think it over and give it your full consideration. I would also like to say a big Thank you to former member, Bernie Lunneman who has. 2 Sandee Sansfacon Don Hogue JULY Dunkel Knife Winner Congratulations to Suzanne Millay Peg Cawthorn Woodburning Class Peg was first spotted at the May, Circle City Wood Carving Show out of Indianapolis, of which she is a member. Her class consisted of 9 students, 3 of them from the East Fork Club. After talking to several of her students about the class, they all had great things to say about her teaching style and abilities. The final results in the pictures below let us all know the class was a success. Annual RVWC Club Picnic June 20th 10-2/3 Once again the Chadwicks have invited RVWC out to join them at their little slice of heaven they call home. This will be another good time for all that come. Thank you to Candy Lytle for taking over all the details and calls that are helping to make everything go smoothly. Thank you again. 3 FAIR UPDATES: Ohio State Fair: July 29th, Don Hogue, Bob Manning, Dick Middleton, and Paul Miller represented our club with 4 tables set up for exhibit and demonstrating. There was a change in their usual set up area, but fairgoers were still able to find them and enjoy their tables. Bob Manning entered a couple of his cowboys and came away with a 1st and 3rd place ribbons. Paul Miller was heard to say he enjoyed himself so much, he would sign up for it again next year. Congratulations Bob Boone County Fair: August 7th and 8th saw Rex & Sandee Sansfacon, Bob Manning, Dick Middleton, Ed Stover, Mary Lou Brennen, Troy Baker and Mike & Joyce Shelton out at the fairgrounds exhibiting, demonstrating and talking to a lot of fairgoers interested in admiring and/or learning our hobby. Several members entered into the heritage skills competition. Joyce Shelton walked away with a blue ribbon for her baby quilt. Congratulations to All Thank You to all the above members for representing RVWC at the fairs and For sharing their woodcarving talents. A Big Thank You To Candy Lytle for designing and creating a new Club table for RVWC. After presenting several variations of design to the club, one design stood out. Candy and Joyce Shelton went shopping for material. Betty Denton (while taking care of Tom from his back surgery) embroidered our material identifying our club. Rex Sansfacon designed and built the frame work to hold the fabric on the table. The collective results are beautiful. They will give our club easy recognition at Shows and exhibits. The members who represent our club will have their creations showcased by the beautiful design. It accommodate a 6 or 8 foot table, or sit in the middle of two tables for a bigger display. I had carved a santa into a piece of cottonwood bark one night and was quite pleased with it. I got out the acrylic paints and suddenly the project was more wood for the firepit. The paint did not turn out how I imagined. I brought it into the club meeting and Bill told me about a trick to get rid of the paint. Isopropyl Alcohol and a toothbrush. I used 70% and poured a little on my santa, then started scrubbing the face and beard. About 15 minutes later I had all but a few spots removed. Knife Drawing Guidelines: All members that attend meeting will receive a FREE ticket unless they have won previously. Previous winners are still able to win by purchasing a ticket or tickets for $1 each. The dollars collected will help the drawings to continue..as of May 2015 we have now started our 2nd year. 5 Heinecke Wood Shopping: I had the pleasure of visiting Heinecke Wood in Cumberland, Wisconsin this past week with my daughter Jennifer. It is approx. 1 hour north of her Home in Menominie. GPS took us through county and road namessuch as: A, B, C, Z, HH, etc.., the Jennie-0 Turkey Processing plant, and a lot of beautiful green countryside consisting of farms & woods. With their address of 27 1/2 Avenue in our GPS we drove thru Cumberland and out towards more farm fields til we were directed to turn onto 27 1/4 Avenue which eventually turned into 27 1/2 Avenue home of Heinecke, the mecca of Bass wood.except there is no sign...a reference to Harry Potter was made, a few smiles, and a This is one of several Barns. down the road and that s when we spotted a huge pile of sawdust behind a barn and knew we had the right place. Sure enough, Tim greeted us and took us out to the wood cutting shop and gave us a tour. So much wood! He showed us the lathe they used for creating roughouts. They do not sell them, but make them for others to sell and hold the masters for future use. (see red square below) In case you were interested, they use a Grizzly bandsaw. They had our wood orders waiting for us and another pile started with the orders for that day. We thanked them and loaded our wood. Very Nice People. Below are some pictures we wanted to share with you. Their property is surrounded by farmland and in the back they had 8 to 10 sheds loaded with drying wood of varying sizes and a tractor in one to move it around. I never got to meet Robin that day, but she made it easy to collect all our orders and hold them for us. Sandee Lots of Masters
