Please be sure to use the 2018 forms! Additional forms will be available at the 4-H office if you need more (and hopefully you will). Your club will receive 10% of your club s total sales from the 4-H Leaders Association. Give the WHITE COPY of the form to the customer when they pay you at the time the order is taken. Please take the time to make sure the form is filled out completely and that you have included the sales tax!* Make checks payable to Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension (OCCCE). Return the YELLOW and PINK COPIES with the monies collected to your leader or the 4-H office by April 23, Club News PROJECT BRAINSTORM Did you know a facebook post could be a fair entry? Well it can!!! And so can your other social media. Just do a screengrab, print, and submit! All forms and monies MUST be turned in to the 4-H Office by April 23, Late forms and monies will NOT be accepted; it will be your responsibility to notify and refund customers if you have not turned in your forms on time! For best selection, the person who placed the order may pick up their plants from Kirby s Farm Market in Brockport between May 11 and May 31, Remember that until the last frost has passed (about Memorial Weekend), the plants should not be transplanted into your garden! Pick up ends July 1. If there are any questions, please contact the office at * Sales tax is a requirement as Kirby s are selling the plants (we receive a commission). 2 PAGE 2 Seeking Volunteers for Conservation Field Days The 2018 Conservation Field Days will be on Tuesday May 22 and Wednesday, May 23. We need volunteers (both teens and adults) to lead groups around from site to site and to provide general assistance. Anticipated hours are 10 am - 2 pm and lunch will be provided. Community service credit is available and schools will be notified of student s participation. Please return the coupon below by May 1 or the information listed. NAME: PHONE: SCHOOL: GRADE: PARENT SIGNATURE: MANDATORY FIRST TIME LIVESTOCK EXHIBITOR REQUIREMENTS First time exhibitors are expected to participate in accident report training. This requirement will apply to all animal exhibitors. This training can also be scheduled upon request for a group or individual, appointments can be made at the office. It only takes about 5-10 minutes and all animal superintendents can provide the training. All exhibitors showing in a species for the first time will be required to have a brief orientation with the superintendent of the area on Sunday or Monday of the fair. This orientation may also include a quick check on showmanship/ animal handling to make sure youth are confident and safe in the arena. If you feel they need more instruction or support on Showmanship, they can plan for more practice with other youth or leaders during the week. If an exhibitor fails to meet with the superintendent, it will be reflected in their herdsmanship score, which may result in loss of premiums. Also, if an exhibitor fails to meet with the superintendent and demonstrates unsafe behaviors in the show ring, they may be asked to leave the ring.

5 HPDC Spring Schooling Show Rules and Registration Information Below are the rules and registration information for the Spring Schooling Show. Registration forms are available at cceorleans.org or at the 4-H Office. The show will be held on April 22, 2018 and classes begin at 8:00 am sharp! The Basics Fees: $6.00 per class or $30.00 per division - one horse & rider combo plus a $5.00 office fee (waived if pre-registered by 4/20). Stalls will be available on a first come, first served basis for $30 each ($10 returned after cleaning). All entries must be paid with cash or check at the time the entries are made. There will be no refunds. Divisions: Riders showing in Walk-Trot classes cannot cross enter into Open, 14-18, or 13 & Under. For Games and Jumping Classes: Youth (ages 8-18) that wish to participate must bring a letter from their Cornell Cooperative Extension Office indicating they are currently enrolled in the 4-H Horse Program and that their county does not offer rider evaluations. (Evaluations will be offered for 4-H Members beginning promptly at 8:00 am). All participants must sign the Acknowledgement of Risk Form (parents/guardians must sign for youth). All participants, regardless of age, must wear an approved helmet (ASTM-1163/SEI certified) and proper equestrian footwear with a distinguishable heel. A current negative Coggins test and current rabies certificate for each horse must be presented at check in. Horses prone to kicking should have a red ribbon placed in their tail. No stallions are permitted on the grounds. Horses outside the show ring shall be ridden at a walk. No jumping outside of the ring. No alcoholic beverages allowed on the fairgrounds. Horse Camp/Dog Camp Dates have been set for both of these incredible two day events. Horse Camp and Dog Camp respectively are sponsored by Horse PDC and Dog PDC. Each event includes workshops, hands on activities, and special instructors. The date for Dog Camp is May Registration forms and a flyer were linked to the March 2 Friday Facts. The registration form is also available at cceorleans.edu; you do not need to own a dog to participate. Horse Camp will be July Participants should plan to bring their horse and be active in the horse program. Stay tuned for more info!

6 Bits and Bobs, Things You Should Know Market Auction You should already have submitted your Letter of Intent (April 1). Draft Project Records and participant biographies are due June 1. Fill out as much information as possible on your project record and then submit a copy with your fair entry. Your record does NOT need to be fully completed until after Fair. Martin Davis Scholarship The Mr. and Mrs. Martin Davis Memorial Award is an annual 4-H award given to a 4-Her who will be graduating from high school and is planning on entering college or the armed forces. Additional information and an application are available in the 4-H office. Applications are due by June 15. Parent Alumni Volunteer Network The P.A.V. In an effort to better connect the adults who support successful Orleans County 4-Hers, we re creating a new way of approaching some of our traditions. The P.A.V. Network will aim to connect parents, alumni, and volunteers. The goal will be to keep 4-Hers connected as they age out of the program, help parents better support their youth, and if they desire, become volunteers and keep our volunteers connected. The next P.A.V. meeting is WEDNESDAY, MAY 9 at 7 pm! Discussion will focus on the H Fair. Please plan on attending. Quilt Squares The Centennial Quilt begun last year is still in need of squares. The 4-H Office has fabric squares available which can be decorated any way you like fabric paint, fabric markers, embroidery, etc. Be creative and leave your mark on what will become an OCCCE 4-H heirloom. 4-H Beef and Dairy Club Beef on Weck Dinner Support your fellow 4-Hers! Sat., April 21 at 6 pm at the Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds. Prepared by 4-H youth and volunteers, this delicious dinner includes Beef on Weck, coleslaw, potatoes, drink and apple crisp. Proceeds benefit the Orleans County Beef and Dairy Cattle programs. Tickets are $10; 12 and under $8 and are available at the OCCCE office. Eat in or take out. Dog Five Star Testing Information Five Star Practice and Potluck is Wed., April 4 at 6:30 pm in the Education Center. Five Star Testing is Tues., April 10 at 6:30 pm in the Education Center. OCCCE Master Gardener Scholarship Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners offer a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior pursuing continuing education in the agricultural/horticultural field. 7 Denim and Dust Club News At our first meeting in February, Mr. Gerling came in and taught us about bunnies. He brought a Holland Lop and a Rex for us to hold. He also taught us about feeding, watering and caring for bunnies. After that, we picked out our t-shirt design and color; it has cowboy boots and a hat. At our second meeting of the month, our leader, Bekah, made a power point on horse behavior. Our t-shirts came in and they look great! Mia Olles Senior Council At our meeting in March, Sr. Council set a date for the field trip to the Restaurant Depot. We also talked about the bathroom project. Lastly, we started to discuss the design for the 2018 Senior Council Fair Stand T-Shirt. John Gabalski Nutrition in a Nutshell with Kristina Breakfast food makes a great snack anytime! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but foods like oatmeal, cereal, fruit, and eggs can make a quick and nutritious snack anytime. Here are some ideas: Scrambled eggs, toast & milk, instant oatmeal, fruit & milk, granola bars. You can make your own instant oatmeal for healthy whole-grain nutrition: Instant Oatmeal Packets: Use a plastic snack or sandwich bag; add 1/2 cup quick oats. Optional ingredients include raisins, dried fruits, cinnamon, brown sugar or nuts. Close bag and store for future use. To use: Empty packet into microwave safe bowl. Stir in one cup water or milk. Microwave on high 2 1/2 3 min. Stir before serving. Grilled Cheese and Fruit Sandwich: Lightly spread butter or margarine on outside of two slices of cinnamon raison bread. Inside, place one slice American cheese and thin slices of apple or pear. Cook buttered side out 2-3 min. on pre-heated griddle or skillet over medium heat. The 4-H Office will be accepting Fair entries beginning MAY 1!!!!! Get your paperwork in early this year and enjoy a stress-free Memorial Day Weekend! Remember, one-to-one assistance is always available if you need some extra help. Don t forget T-shirt forms and Camping forms when filling out your fair entries. PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Are you interested in entering photography exhibits at the Fair? Professional photographer Bruce Landis will be leading a workshop Tues. April 24 at 7 pm in the Education Center to guide you through the process of taking better photographs. Learn how to make your fair photography entries as great as they can be. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a local expert and fair judge.
