1 Newton House School Our Newsletter TERM 1, ISSUE 4 2 FEBRUARY 2018 From the Headmaster s Desk... Third world countries have a higher unemployment rate than first world countries do. South Africa has a very high unemployment rate for reasons that are well-known and understood. This automatically means that there are fewer jobs on offer than there are people wishing to be employed and that the competition for jobs is, therefore, much higher. This is a situation that favours employers as they can pick and choose among the candidates applying. There is a further knock-on effect, and that is that children at school are forced to work much harder in order to achieve the results that would make them employable in an extremely competitive environment. We pride ourselves on teaching well and preparing our pupils to achieve better results. We believe that homework is important and, therefore, will push our pupils to work beyond the end of the school day. Children who learn to work for longer hours are more likely to get better results, which will result in them being advantaged later in life. Hint of the Week Play your part in checking that your child has done their homework and has done so satisfactorily. Page

3 Sport Notices Please take note of some changes to the following: The Ter Horst Cricket Team will be playing a match against Delta Park at Newton House on Thursday, 8 February (not on the 5th as planned). The Commonwealth Cricket Team will be playing a match against Delta Park at Newton House School on Monday, 5 February (not at Delta Park as planned). Due to this match, there will be no U/12 and Open practice on Monday. Our Junior Cricket Team will be playing a match against Ruimsig Academy at Newton House on Wednesday, 7 February. Senior Cricket The U/12 and Open cricket team played their first match against Radford House on Thursday, 1 February. We won the toss and chose to bat first. Our fielding was excellent, with Liam Steyn taking 3 brilliant catches on square leg. Unfortunately, we lost by 4 wickets. This was a very good match to witness and our pupils played their hearts out. We are very excited for what lies ahead in the season. Junior Cricket The U/8 and U/9 Newton House cricket team played their first match on Wednesday, 31 January against Radford House. The match was played in a great spirit and both teams enjoyed the match. Unfortunately, we lost the game, but there is great talent to be developed. The players showed a lot of courage in helping Liam Howarth take two wickets off his bowling. All of our players played very well and did their best. We are very excited to see our future cricket stars develop and become better cricketers. Page 3

5 Swimming On Friday, 26 January, the Newton House Swimming Team participated in their first gala for the year. The competition was extremely tough and we edged into second place in the early stages. Unfortunately though, we faltered in the final races and did not do as well as we had hoped. The races were so close that the place judges resorted to using slow motion video to decide on the winners. Pleasingly, more than one person commented on the impeccable behaviour and dress of the Newton House Pupils. Well done, we are so proud of you all. The results were as follows: 1 st Place: Trinityhouse Preparatory School (493 Points) 2 nd Place: St. Catherine s Convent School (455 Points) 3 rd Place: Radford House School (423 Points) 4 th Place: Newton House School (415 Points) Good luck to the swimmers competing at Crawford Lonehill today. Our next gala is on Friday, 9 February at Panorama Primary School. Good luck to all of the Open Water Swimmers swimming in the Platinum Mile at Buffelspoort Dam this weekend. Only one week to go until we take part in the world famous Midmar Mile!
