1 CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL 12 JUNE 2015 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER YEAR 5 TRIP TO FISHBOURNE Down on the South coast near to Chichester lies nestled the Roman Palace of Fishbourne one of the best Roman remains in Britain. On a hot, balmy day Year 5 experienced life at this palace. Unfortunately, it was not a case of tempus fugit as the coach arrived an hour late held up by the vagaries of modern transport. However, the boys on arrival quickly moved to their stations and began a variety of activities. They, particularly, enjoyed dressing up as characters from the palace including the king and queen. They also had opportunities to work with real objects from the palace and deduce information about the site in groups. After watching an informative audio-visual presentation, they then moved on to visit the Palace with its rich array of impressive mosaics and answered questions on their worksheets. They finished the day outside in the ornate Italian style gardens with the smell of the herbs, hedges and plants wafting over the pristine lawns and paths. After a quick, obligatory visit to the shop, the boys returned to the coach with their souvenirs and memories of an interesting step back in time. Mr Lunn

2 Ali Naqi s Amazing Fundraising Project! 2 B H F Well done Ali Naqi for such a fantastic project! The sponsorship money from our Charity Walk has been coming in thick and fast but don t forget to bring yours in ASAP if you haven t already, as the deadline was today! Many thanks to you all.

3 3 U9A Surrey CCC District Performance The U9A team played against a Surrey District XI on Sunday morning at the playing fields. It was a great opportunity for the boys to show off their skills against a very talented group of young players. Having won the toss, Captain, Ishaan Mohan, chose to bowl first. The U9A team put in their best bowling and fielding performance of the season so far. All of the bowlers were economical and accurate and there were a minimal amount of extras as a result. Particular mention should go to Kanishk Srivastava and Zak Mirza in Year 3, and Shivendra Prashad in Year 2, who all played up and did not look out of place. We managed to take 5 wickets for our efforts and restricted our opposition to 104 runs. The run chase did not start well however, as the District side bowled extremely well at the start of our innings. We lost some early wickets, which set us back. Ishaan Mohan and Nayan Patel took the game to the opposition however, and started to take us back on course. Our opponents stuck to their disciplines though and continued to take wickets despite the constant and steady flow of runs. Although we ended up falling short by 26 runs, we gave a good account of ourselves on the day and played respectably against a strong opposition. 4 4 MORE SWIMMING SUCCESS FOR ARUN OELKERS! During the weekend of May I competed in the Cardiff International Gala. Despite having been on crutches and not training for 3 weeks I was confident that I would be able to race, but my Dad refused to let me go unless the Physio gave me the all clear. Two days before the Gala I left the Physio with a huge grin on my face, I was allowed to race. Friday I began with the 200m Butterfly, at the end of the race my knee was so painful I had to be helped out of the pool, but I won the Gold! My Dad then pulled me from the rest of the day s races, I was sad but it was the right thing. We returned on Saturday, I knew I could not do all the races so pulled out of some. I swam the 100m Butterfly and qualified for the final and went on to win the Silver. In the afternoon I came 5 th in the 200m freestyle. Sunday came and as it was the last day I only pulled out of one race. I qualified 4 th fastest for the 100m Freestyle in the morning, after lunch I swam a great personal best in the 400m Freestyle winning the Gold, then I limped to the blocks an hour later and came 4 th in the 200m Backstroke. Finally the 100m Freestyle final arrived, my last swim, I knew I had to bite through the pain to claim a medal. I turned 3 rd and pushed my knee through the pain barrier to claim the Bronze and get a long course personal best, improving my qualifying time by 4 seconds! I must thank my Dad for helping me out of the pool after each race and looking after me for the 11 hours a day spent by the pool. It was a great weekend and I hope to compete next year injury free. Arun Oelkers - 5V INFORMAL CONCERT On Tuesday 2 June the first of our 6 Summer Concerts took place in the hall. The Summer term is always the busiest one for Associated Board Examination and so there was a lot to fit in. The audience were treated to performances from singers and boys playing guitar, clarinet, oboe, flute, saxophone, violin and cello. The evening was undoubtedly the night for percussion with individual performances from four drummers and a rousing set from the Percussion Group led by Mr. Parker. Well done to all the performers, on a lovely summers evening it was just the thing to get us all looking forward to the Summer Concert on 6th July. The second of this term's Informal Concerts will be on Tuesday 16th June for details please see the new Music Notice Board in the alleyway. Mr Sizer
