THURSDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2014 TERM 4 WEEK 5 Tim Lang - Cricket Coaching Coordinator As the Head of Cricket it's great to see the improvement in our B cricket teams over the past few weeks. The vast improvement shown by these boys illustrates just how good a job our coaches are doing at the school and how hard our boys are working on improving their games and getting the most out of themselves each and every week. Obviously I'd like to win every game of cricket we play in but it's not all about that. If all cricketers can improve their cricket skills over the course of the season and have a heap of enjoyment doing it, then I think the coaching staff will have done their jobs. Big thumbs up to our coaches - Josh Boulton 3rd XI, Jack Miller 4th XI, Zac French 10B, Will Dunn 9B and David Richardson 8B. Keep up the great work!! We wish the 9A injury ward all the very best in their recovery. Hard hitting left hander Finn Parker broke his arm last week at school and Captain Josh Turner broke his leg playing basketball on Sunday. This is shocking news for this group but they will need to fight hard in the final two games of 2014 and finish on a positive. The first CAS T20 was played on Tuesday afternoon at Hordern. The 1st XI boys took on eastern suburbs rivals Waverley College. A good crowd was in attendance with music and commentary supplied by Tom Hill and Reuben Antico. I know the boys loved playing with this sort of atmosphere and hopefully CAS understand that more T20 games need to be played across all year groups. Waverley were too strong on the day winning by 60 runs.

Good luck to all teams this weekend!! Let's finish 2014 on a high with some standout performances. Match Reports 1st XI vs Trinity Day 1 For the third game in a row Captain Jack Fagan won the toss and elected to bat on a batting friendly surface against Trinity Grammar at Hordern. Openers Siu and Martin looked solid against the Trinity seamers until Martin inside edged a wide delivery back onto his stumps. Fagan started well thumping his first delivery through square leg and it was looking like a big score was on the cards for Cranbrook. The introduction of left arm spin from Trinity slowed the Cranbrook run rate and really halted progress when Fagan was caught and bowled. Sam Atkinson joined Siu and these two worked hard until lunch to take Cranbrook to 2/60. Talk at lunch was that conditions were excellent for batting and that a big total was possible if we could bat the day out and play positively against a steady Trinity attack. Atkinson and Siu again looked solid but were finding it difficult to score against some disciplined Trinity bowling and committed fielding. Siu (43) was eventually frustrated out and that s when the trouble started for Cranbrook. Alex Gall and Finnbar Stenmark were both unluckily dismissed. Gall edging a ball down leg side and Finnbar given out LBW to a very dubious decision. While all this was happening Atkinson was playing a controlled innings at the other end and held it together nicely with pressure mounting on the Cranbrook batsmen. Young left hander Harry Round looked in good form when he joined Atkinson and this partnership added 57 runs to take us to 5/148. Round played some delightful shots before he was dismissed. The Cranbrook tail didn't wag for the first time this season and we were all on for a meagre 164. The highlight was Atkinson's patient innings of 54. Finnbar Stenmark bowled one over at Trinity after tea before a huge thunderstorm hit Hordern and play was abandoned for the day. Day 2 Cranbrook were greeted by warm conditions and a flat looking Hordern wicket on Day 2 and it was always going to be difficult to defend 164. Big quicks Negus and Stenmark were pumped to make early inroads into the Trinity top order but things didn't go to plan and we were soon on the back foot after some very aggressive Trinity batting. The Trinity openers (Martenstyn and Bastoulis) took the score to 95 and it was game over. Debutant Angus Hayward was the shining light for Cranbrook. The tall left arm seamer bowled with great control finishing with 1/10 from his 8 overs. Angus could easily have finished with another wicket or two if luck was on his side. Alec Lesmond was outstanding in the field and also bowled with control taking 2/17 from his 8 overs. If all boys have Alec's committed attitude in the field and with the ball in hand then we will take some beating in future games.

Left arm wrist spinner Harry Round also bowled nicely taking 4/46. This will be a big confidence booster for Harry. His batting and bowling is developing each week and great signs for the future. Cranbrook eventually dismissed Trinity for 240. Cranbrook were then forced to bat again and finished 3/90 when stumps were draw. Sam Atkinson (34) was amongst the runs again and Alex Gall played some nice drives in his innings of 33 not out. The Cranbrook batsmen need to rotate the strike more often and be a bit more aggressive against the spinners in the final two weeks before Christmas. It's crucial we bat the 96 overs and give out bowlers a big total to defend. Fielding was much improved last Saturday and with this attitude I'm sure a win isn't far away for the 1st XI Trinity 240 (H Round 4/46, A Lesmond 2/17, A Hayward 1/10) defeated Cranbrook 164 (S Atkinson 54, D Siu 43) and 3/90 (S Atkinson 34, A Gall 33*) COWAN POINTS 5 - Sam Atkinson 4 - Harry Round 3 - Angus Hayward 2 - Dan Siu 1 - Alec Lesmond 2nd XI vs Trinity Trinity 2nd XI 171 defeated Cranbrook 2nd XI 159 Day 1 Trinity (45.5) C.Hayward 2-6 (4) M.Turner 2-31 (9) Trinity won the toss and elected to bat in the baking sun at Trinity Grammar School on a pitch that had produced a lot of runs in the morning game. Charlie Hayward (2-6) put a dent in their plans with two early wickets. The game continued at a slow pace until the first break when the first of the afternoon storms hit Summer Hill. An early tea was taken with the score at Spin was introduced upon play resuming and Michael Turner (2-31) chipped in with another two wickets to have the 'Brook boys right on top. It was here that the intensity levels dropped after a few half chances went begging and Trinity began to build a total. The storm clouds were building and the lightning flashes forced us to once again to leave the field with the opposition at The torrential rain had the boys testing their dressing shed cricket skills as it looked unlikely for play to resume. Just as quickly as the cumulonimbus clouds stormed in, however, they drew away leaving a solid hour of play on a freshly juiced up wicket. Nick Rael decided that speeding up the over rate was the key in the chess game that is 2- day 4 hour cricket. It worked a treat as our medium pacers led by debutant Lethu *** (1-9) ripped through the overs and took a couple of vital middle order wickets. The final

storm of the day was stumps and remarkably after three rain interruptions we were still able to get almost 46 overs in and have Trinity reeling at A very interesting day's cricket ahead next week and with a batting order in red hot form the 2's should be very confident in remaining undefeated in 2014/15. Day 2 Our aim was to take 4 quick wickets and be in control of the game rather as Trinity carried on from on Day 2. At with C.Hayward (4-18) leading the charge it looked like we had our wish. However a very handy Trinity partnership of 23 for the 10th wicket not only added runs but took away precious overs for us to score the required runs. Nevertheless, we were back in the sheds before the first drinks break with 171 the target with 3 hours to play - A position we were comfortable with. We had a steady start in the lead up to tea with Michael Turner and Jordie Ireland looking to really put their heads' down. At 1-42 with 5 minutes until the main break we looked as if we had set ourselves up superbly for the evening session. However, cricket can turn quickly... and it most certainly did that. The loss of 3 quick wickets had us reeling at 4-45 when the tea and scones were served. Turner was still in and looking in superb touch again, so the game was very much still on. It would be up to the middle and lower order to provide support. George Stewart and Charlie Hayward hung around very nicely as Turner took control of the game. At with half an hour to play and Turner unleashing bombs at will, the game looked to be ours. However some straight bowling and nervous batting led to a collapse. Despite Turner's heroics at one end hitting an incredible 101* (Coming off the back of his 147* against Aloysius!!!), Cranbrook fell an agonising 12 runs short in a gripping game. It was a tough loss to take for the 2nd XI, but we are still not far off the pace as it appears the competition will be very even in 2014/15. Trinity 171 C.Hayward 4-18 (8) L.Mthembu 2-24 (10) M.Turner 2-31 (9) Cranbrook 159 M.Turner 101* COWAN POINTS 5 - Michael Tuner 4 - C.Hayward 3 - L.Mthembu 2 - J.Ireland 1 - J.Simeonides

3rd XI vs Knox Grammar As the sun smiled down on Dangar number 4 it seemed like cricket was in the air. The boys arrived wiping sleep from their eyes and were ready to take on a formidable Knox outfit. After losing the toss and being sent into bowl it was clear that Knox were not here to muck around. An early wicket to Lachlan Roseman saw Cranbrook gain a slight advantage. However, some poor fielding, a series of dropped catches and some missed opportunities letting Cranbrook down. As Knox pilled on the runs it was clear that Cranbrook was going to need a minor miracle. Knox ending the innings with 286. Cranbrook started the innings off strongly, with some heavy hitting from Tom Hill. A loss of an early wicket saw Gareth Maples join Hill in the middle, steadying a shacking ship. These two once again proved to be a handful for the bowlers but were unable to pull cranbrook back from edge of defeat. The tail (which started at number 5) wagged on occasion, but the damage had been done as Knox ran out comfortable victors in what was a clinical performance. 5. Tom Hill 4. Lachlan Rosman 3. Gareth Maples 4th XI vs Knox Grammar The 4th XI were keen to continue their good form with another win for the season. Bowling first on a flat wicket the boys looked good from the outset with good line and length bowling from Tierney, Overall and Mcintosh. We were able to keep Knox to a manageable 149 and knew a victory was possible if we held our wickets. Our batting started out a bit shaky until Tom Wilson and Matt Tierney steadied the ship and both

had to retire. AS the game drew to a close we needed 12 from the last over with 1 wicket in hand. Unfortunately we were unable to reach the total losing the last wicket on the second last ball. Knox 149 (Mcintosh 1-6, Overall 0-10) def. Cranbrook 143 (Wilson 47, Tierney 36) 5. Wilson 4. Tierney 3. Mcintosh 2. Overall 1. Barakat 10A vs Trinity The 10A s snatched an improbable draw from the hands of defeat with a display of immense determination and pride. Faced with the tough task of chasing down 235 runs against a very strong Trinity outfit, Openers Halliday and Jewell-Tait set about negotiating the first hours play. With runs being accumulated slowly, the target soon became one of preserving wickets. Both openers put up stern resistance but when Jewell- Tait departed and Lim-Strachan going for a duck, the challenge ahead looked a near impossibility. Captain Crammond played extremely positively moving quickly into the thirties with some firm stroke play. Again, Cranbrook lost wickets in clutches but gutsy partnerships between Woods and Stockley first, and then Woods and Cahill gave Cranbrook a sniff of avoiding defeat. Woods battled bravely for nearly an hour and a half before finally giving Trinity their 9th wicket. This brought number 11, Lyndon Norton to the crease with still 9 overs to face. Cahill was the epitome of coolness and with himself and Norton putting their bodies on the line the Trinity boys were becoming exasperated. As Norton kept out the final ball of the day, the Cranbrook team erupted with joy and it was so pleasing to see the pride that this group of boys undoubtedly have. COWAN POINTS 5pts Woods 4pys Cahill 3pts Crammond 2pts Norton 1pt - Halliday 10B v Knox. Cranbrook won the toss and batted first Cranbrook 52 all out 21 overs Knox 53 for 1 from 8 overs. Cranbrook faced a strong Knox unit at the Gillespie Oval last Saturday. Despite some good performances with bat and ball, Cranbrook were overwhelmed by the strength of the Knox squad. The game was played in good spirits, helped along by everyone s favorite guy Spira. We may not have got the result we were looking for, but Spira made some new friends at least.

Cranbrook displayed enough talent and ability to have been able to really compete. With more self-belief and hard work, the 10Bs should expect more from themselves in the new year. 1. Wolfensberger. Looked threatening with the new ball. 12 for 1 from 3 2. Beattie. Showed resistance and guts with the bat. 3. Lee. Opended the batting with a few quick fire bounderies, looked solid with the ball also. 4. Little. Played some positive strokes at the end of the Cranbrook innings 5. Spira. Actually showed some flare and creativity with the bat, when he wasn t busy being the most popular man on the field. 9A vs Trinity Day1 Cranbrook won the toss and elected to bat and got off to the worst start with Alex Buchen bowled without scoring. Max Gerlach was joined by skipper Josh Turner as they tried to steady the ship but with the score on 20 Max also got bowled for 16. Finn Parker's stay was brief as he got caught for 6. Josh was joined by Lachie Swaney and built a solid partnership until Josh was run out for 18 and we were 4/96. Johnny Vickers walked in and with Lachie took the score to 120 when Swaney was caught in the covers for a well made 65 which included 8 fours and 4 sixes. Constant wickets fell after that and we were bowled out with two overs left in the day for 209 with Johnny finishing on 61 which included 5 fours and 4 sixes. Day 2

Day 2 saw us down to 10 men with Finn Parker breaking his arm at school on Thursday, lucky for us we could call in Robbie McHugh to field for us. We couldn't have got off to a better start with Lachie Swaney getting a wicket with the first ball of the match and this started a massive collapse with Trinity losing 5 more wickets to be 6/23. They steadied for a little partnership then we picked up a run out to have Trinity at 7/65. Looking to be well on top complacency crept in and with that trinity put on a 138 run partnership to cruise to victory by 3 wickets. It was a cricket lesson given to us, hopefully we learn from this and not let it happen again. Best of the bowlers were Lachie Swaney with 2/22 off his 10 overs and the improving Sean Fitzgerald who took 2/20 off 4 overs. Special mention goes to Robbie McHugh who was easily the best fielder on the ground, he had a lot of traffic coming at him and threw himself at everything. COWAN POINTS 5 Swaney 4 vickers 3 Fitzgerald 2 McHugh 1 Turner 5 - L Swaney 4 - J Vickers 3 - S Fitzgerald 2 - R McHugh 1 - J Turner Cranbrook 8A v Knox Grammar Another picturesque, sunny day for the 8A s clash with Knox and the boys were fired up for a victory. Noah Learmonth and Hugo Hayman started the attack strong, with Noah taking a wicket on his second ball and dismissing another in the 7th over. Knox were under a lot of pressure at 2/23. Hugo s unpredictable line and length had the Knox batsmen in disarray and was extremely unlucky not to get a wicket with several catches dropped. Not capitalising on opportunities and unable to break the partnership, Knox moved out to 3/124. The 8A s were hungry to finish well and kept the run rate down, forcing Knox to a total of 144 from the 32 overs. Our best bowlers: Noah Learmonth 3/15 off 6 overs PJ Foord 2/13 off 3 overs Hugo Hayman 0/24 off 5 overs With a very solid batting performance last week and an achievable total, the 8A s were looking at the possibility of our first win for the season. Our solid opening duo - Tom Greig and Noah Learmonth, continue to get us off to a good start. The Knox bowling attack was very tight and after 12 overs we were 0/25. After seeing the openers out, Tom Greig then had to retire hurt, which allowed lefthanded Marcus Roberts to come in and break up the attack. Marcus hit a quick 19 before getting out caught and bowled. It was yet again up to our middle order to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Hugo Hayman and Alex Randall, showed courage and determination with the bat, frustrating the Knox boys and PJ Foord played some great shots, for his well-earned 17.

A few unlucky decisions saw our middle order back in the sheds and our lower order didn t get to fire on the day. It was a tight finish and Tom Greig, walking wounded, and with a runner, courageously came back out to the centre to try to take the victory. It wasn t our day and we finished up all out in the 29th over, 24 runs short. Our best batsmen: Noah Learmonth 21 Marcus Roberts 19 PJ Foord 17 COWAN POINTS Noah Learmonth 5 PJ Foord 4 Marcus Roberts - 3 Hugo Hayman 2 Oliver Lamens - 1 8B vs Knox Grammar Scores: Knox 9/229 (Nicklin 2/23, Dandretti 1/15,Beattie 1/10,) beat Cranbrook 9/50 (Nicklin 19, Tasker 8, Norman 7) 36 by 9 wickets. COWAN POINTS Nicklin 5, Norman 4, Tasker 3, Youngman 2, Fine 1.

Cranbrook lost the toss and were put into field on what was an excellent day for cricket. The intensity in the field began well with all boys having committed to this in the pregame talk. However the heat eventually got to the fielding side and Knox started to accumulate a large total. This was not without a fairly regular fall of wickets and a much higher standard in the field. Despite several dropped catches, many were held and Cranbrook took a record 9 wickets one short of bowling the opposition all out! The batting was a similar story with Cranbrook starting well, only to lose key wickets to rash shots. At drinks, Cranbrook were situated in what was undoubtedly the best position all year, being 3/48. However a monumental collapse that is becoming far too common led to the team being bowled out for 50. A more sustained effort in the field and more discipline with the bat in hand could quite easily see Cranbrook come out on top in the local derby next week. I look forward to seeing everyone at training and hopefully fielding eleven men for the first time next week. 6A vs Knox Grammar Cranbrook 2/194 Defeated Knox 5/129 It had been threatening to happen for a few weeks now, but the talented Junior School 1st XI finally clicked and put on a clinic of aggressive and powerful cricket. Yianni Theo' (50ret.) and Alex Van Vugt (65ret.) led from the front, mixing both smart running between wickets with aggressive stroke play to score at better than a run a ball. Ned Swaney continued his impressive Term 4 with another 50 retired, this time off only 31 balls!!! From 25 overs, against a very tidy bowling attack, we managed a remarkable 2/194. It was a sensational display of batting and great to watch. Although it was a mountain to climb for our CAS rivals, Cranbrook still had a job to do to get back into the winners' circle. Henry Martin was sensational in his two spells finishing with the extremely economical figures of 0-6 off 4 overs. He still managed to get controlled outswing using the 6-Stitcher which is very encouraging for the years to come. One of the highlights in the field was a sensational outfield catch taken by Theo Whittaker off the bowling of Chris Lakis (1-20). A great way to finish the Saturday games of the term - Now we look forward to the T20 Spectacular 'Battle of the Hill' against The Scots College on Wednesday 19th November! Cranbrook 2/194 A.Van Vugt 65 retired Y.Theo' 50 retired N.Swaney 51 retired Knox 5/129 A.White 1-12 (3) Y.Theo' 1-14 (3) O.Allen 1-16 (3)

6B vs. Knox Knox 138 (Taylor 2-9, Mann 1-13) def. Cranbrook 19 (Wilson 4) 5A vs Waverley Cranbrook 2/147 (Sam Oliver 42 retired, Asher Learmonth 40 retired, Freddie Walton 27 not out) defeated Waverley 5/243 (Will Shanahan 2/6 from 3 overs 4A vs Kings School Cranbrook 82 defeated Kings 46 (Hugo Walsh 31, 3 wickets for 2 runs. George Elgood-Cann 2 wickets for 2 runs) A very positive performance from the Cranbrook U10A boys saw a second consecutive win of the season. Whilst the boys were disappointed with the number of extra's they gifted the opposition they were pleased with how they took their opportunities inparticular the catches. The Kings boys bowled straight and that proved to be the downfall for some of the Cranbrook's higher batting order; a harsh lesson in the value of defending the stumps! Fortunately a steady middle order and a gallant display of batting from skipper Hugo Walsh saw the boys clock up 82. Fired up for King's innings the boys ripped into the opposition and kept a right field resulting in the win. 4B vs St Aloysius St Aloysius 1/38 (Peter Herro 1/5) defeated Cranbrook 10/37 (Daniel a Maher 7, Max Haysom 6) Cranbrook won the toss and elected to bat first. The St Aloysius bowlers started well until a healthy partnership between Max Haysom and Daniel Maher gave Cranbrook a boost to 37 all out. St Aloysius batsmen batted suburb despite Cranbrook's best effort to

contain the scoring rate with Peter Herro the sole wicket taker. An improved effort in batting, bowling and fielding as Cranbrook 4B continue to work hard.
